Title: My first spearfishing trip after May.

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax.
1st picture: The view at the end of 1st day while I was eating!!!)

As the month of May passed, summer came around the corner. During the month of May, there is a ban on recreational spearfishing fishing in Greece. I eagerly finished all my responsibilities and on Thursday afternoon I took off alone, to a distant fishing ground. The plan was to go fishing in the beautiful island of Serifos, which is the origin of Yannis. Unfortunately the team could not manage to get together due to different responsibilities. Neither Brett could make it, nor Dimitris. Also my schedule could not fit on those dates. The only option I had was to go spearfishing alone. So I loaded all my fishing gear on my car and drove away to the fishing ground I had chosen. After about two and a half hours of driving, I reached my destination. I got ready and started fishing.. The northern Euboikos bay was warm this time (24 degrees Celsius) but blurry as usual. I swam a long distance without seeing something that was worth catching. In one ambush I saw a nice striped sea-bream (Lithognathus mormyrus). The fish swam  around me and just before it got lost in the blur, I pressed the trigger. I caught a nice striped sea-bream which gave me some courage to continue fishing. Three hours had passed since I had starting fishing. I got out, went to the car, and drove a few kilometres away. I swam another long distance without seeing anything big. Only small fish were present within the blurry waters. The time was 8:10 pm and I decided to do two or three dives before I got out. I took a deep breath and dove. I landed on the muddy bottom and waited. The visibility did not exceed one meter. Suddenly, I felt something near me passing by. Looking closer, I saw a shadow slowly passing by.
"Is it a  gilt-head (sea) bream (Sparus aurata)? is it a striped sea-bream? Take the shot and..." I thought. When the shadow passed in front of me, I aimed as good as I could and pressed the trigger. I did not have the siltiest idea if I had achieved my goal. The frantic unwinding of the rope from my speargun, made me to realise that I had hit something which probably was a big one. Holding the rope stretched but without putting pressure on the fish, I emerged to the surface. The murky waters did not allow me to see what I had caught. The rope was constantly changing direction, as the fish struggled to free itself. After a few minutes, I had in my hands a nice sea-bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) The shaft had stroke it in the neck and the fish was barely caught by the skin of its neck. This explains the powerful struggle of the fish. I embraced the beautiful fish and I went out. The Almighty had given me a 1.7 kilogram sea-bass. It was an unexpected gift !!!
( 2nd picture: The lucky shot...) I did not need to fish anymore. Anyway, it was starting to get dark and I could not see. I changed and started eating since I was very hungry, looking at the beautiful landscape. After a while I got lost in the arms of Morpheus .....
The next morning I woke up very early. I put on my gear and dove where I had stopped the day before. Desert!!! Nothing was swimming. I continued fishing and after about two hours on an ambush, I saw two white dots approaching me in the blur. Two nice sharpsnout sea-bream(Diplodus puntazzo) came towards me. The fish was swimming so fast that could it could actualy nailed itself on the shaft. I shot it on its head and caught a 600 grams sharpsnout sea-bream.
(3rd picture: Wellcome...)
"Thank God ...." I thought and got out. I drove few kilometres away and dove again. Here it seemed to have more fishes. At one ambush a big flock of sea-bass came towards me. The fish were nervous and before I would loose the flock in the blur, I shot and caught one of the big ones. It was a fish about a kilo. The blurry waters had fooled me. The fish was closer than I expected and thus seemed much bigger. In another ambush a mulle(Mugil cephalus) approached me. The fish did not see me at all and continued swimming in front of me. I shot and caught a fish just over a kilo. Happy with my success and with uplifted psychology, I dove and ambushed at the end of the posidonia. But I forgot to activate my underwater camera. After few seconds small sea-bass appeared out of the blue. I was playing with them, by making noises and observing their behaviour, as they were wondering around in the posidonia, when a bigger sea-bass appeared. I turned my speargun gently and aimed the fish. As it turned around, I pressed the trigger, shooting it on its neck. I caught a 1.3 kilo sea-bass.
( 4th picture: A nice sea-bass....) I could not believe in my eyes. Within half an hour, I had caught more than my four-hour yesterday's fishing. Continuing, I caught two more mullets about a kilo each. The first of the two mullets did not see me at all and came in front of me, put its head in the seaweed and started eating. I looked around and when I was sure that there was nothing bigger swimming around me, I caught it. While swimming, I noticed that that mullets were licking the mouths of pinnas (Pinna Nobilis ). (5th picture: There is some heavy licking here!!!)
"Probably something is coming out of their mouths and that's why the mullets are liking them.... "
I thought, It was the first time in my entire life that I had noticed this phenomenon !!! As I was swimming on the surface, I noticed something next to another pinna. I turned on my underwater camera and dove on it. It was a nest of a ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta), but the construction of the nest was not over yet. In order to get closer without causing any damage, I just changed direction of the camera, stretched the speargun to get the shot I wanted. I dove without moving anything, in order to create the least possible waves, thus avoiding the destruction of this greatness.
(6th picture: Still under construction....) Later on, on another ambush,I caught another striped sea-bream and decided to go out. Just before I reached the beach, I had a strong urge coming over me to dive.(7th picture: Just before the end.....)
"One more ambush, the last one in this place ..." I thought and dove. After a while in the blurry waters, I saw the silhouette of a barracuda (Sphyraena sphyraena). The fish came towards me, and that was its fatal mistake. I aimed at the centre and caught a 1.3 kilogram barracuda. I was very happy with the the outcome of my fishing, I wanted to do a last dive in my favourite place. I was not going to fish for more than an hour and so it happened. But at the fourth dive, there was a surprise waiting me. While I had dived and ambushed in the seaweed, a lichia ( Lichia amia ) appeared on my right. This amazing hunter, with the wide and muscular body, came quickly, looked at me and turned around to leave. I did not ask for more. I had already turned the speargun, aimed at its neck and I pulled the trigger. The shaft left with incredible speed and stroke the silvery hunter at the designated area. The lichia left at high speed, pulled me twice and then sank. All this in 33 seconds !!! If the Almighty Wants to Provide.... Keeping a firm grip on the rope I pulled the fish towards me, I brought it in my arms the three kilo lichia (3,210 gr). (8th picture: The last gift of the Almighty!!!)
My fishing expedition had ended incredibly. Thanking the Almighty for His exceedingly precious gifts, I changed and I drove back home ..... (9th &10th pictures: All together...)

Title: As the tide turns.....

(1st picture: It was a bit cold....)

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax.

Although the weather forecast was predicting unstable weather, I did not want this opportunity to get lost. There is a saying in Greece that states: madness does not go to the mountains .... Also during the month of May, amature spearfishing it is forbidden by the Greek legal system. I loaded my gears very early in the morning and I drove for the place where I wanted to dive. After two and a half hours of driving I arrived at the designated place. The sky was cloudless, but it was too cold. 3 degrees Celsius. The north sea-brease was making things more difficult. I got dressed as fast as I could and dove. The sea was clear but cold. My diving-watch was showing 13 degrees Celsius. But who cares? I started diving in the shallows to warm my lungs. It was on the second ambush and without activating my underwater camera, I saw a good sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). The fish came behind me, where I was not well hidden. It came slowly, inspecting me, and turned away very quickly. The only choice I had was to aim and pull the trigger as fast as possible. Of course I missed ... I did not catch a three kilo sea-bass.....I blamed myself for the miss. On the other hand, the only thing I could do is to continue fishing. I kept ambushing hoping that another big fish would appear, but in vain. Although the seabed was excellent for fishing since it was coverd with flat rocks, posidonia enough blur, I did not see anything remarkable. A small (gilt-head) sea-bream (Sparus aurata) appeared, but when it saw me disappeared immediately!!! I was astonished by the absence of fish. I was fishing for two hours, I did not see anything impressive besides the sea-bass. At some point, the small fish disappeared all, hiding under the various rocks. I dove at once ambushing on the first rock I found, trying to see who the preditor was and from which direction was coming. In vain again. I did not see anything. The only thing that was different was the noise of a boat-machine. I looked around and saw a fishing trawler throwing its nets. After few minutes, the fishing trawler came out on the beach. The fishermen tied a rope to a large tree to have a stand and gathered the nets. Realising the absence of fish, I decided to approach the fishing trawler. When I approached it, I turned on the underwater camera. I saluted the fishermen and they also saluted me back. They were catching sardines. They were teasing me by asking if I wanted a bag of sardines. I thanked them and continued to film their big catch.
(2nd picture: The trapped sardines...)
Talking to them, they told me that the amount they had caught was small, about ten buckets. When I asked them how big is a good catch, their answer surprised me. 60 to 70 buckets was a satisfactory catch !!! I was speechless. That was why the fish had disappeared from this area.....
In order not to tear the net, they put a smaller net and filled it with the sardines. Two people were picking up the smaller net from different sides and carried the sardines to the buckets. I stayed and observed this different way of fishing for a while and then I decided to change fishing place. On the way back I also found a sardine that had managed to escape from the net, but due to its multiple wounds had died.
(3rd picture: One of the victims.... )
Disappointed and with out caching anything, I went out and got in the car. While I was settling my gears, the trawler had gone out and was throwing its deadly nets nets again. Another ecological disaster with the blessings of the law was ready to be re-committed. Frustrated from the whole scene, I drove a few miles, got ready and dove. Here the underwater landscape had changed completely. The sea was unbelievably blurry. I think that the main reason was the near-by fish farming. The north wind was starting to blow more, making my fishing more difficult. I could barely see the tip of my speargun. The sea was much colder than before. I continued my ambushes without great success. Nothing was swimming. I approached a platform of the fishery, I took a deep breath and dove. The visibility was not more than a meter. Just before I was out of air, I saw a shadow of a nice sea bass appearing in front of me at great speed. Once the fish noticed my presence, turned and got lost in the blur. I instinctively aimed and pulled the trigger. The spear disappeared in the thick blur and then ... the absolute calm ..... Nothing...... peace and quiet....
"Probably I missed the target ....." I thought. I started reeling the rope of my speargun, when I felt a very light trebling on the tips of my fingers. I felt that I was dragging something heavy with the spear. "I probably did not miss....." I thought smiling. I reeled in the rest of the rope with quick but steady moves. A big sea bass  appeared in front of me out of the blue. It was shut on its neck. The spear had probably broken its spine. This was the reason that the only thing I felt was a gentle tremble. I embraced it, kissed it and asked for forgiveness for the pain I had caused it.

I had missed on a great sea bass I should not, and the Almighty had been Given me another one that I should not. After I hung it on my weight belt, I continued with my ambushes. Nothing had changed: Blurred, cold and no fish. Another hour passed without seeing any fish. I decided to make some more ambushes before I finished my fishing expedition. In one of these ambushes, it seemed to me that I saw a shadow gliding over a flat rock.
"Was it real a fish what I saw or my eyes tricked me?" I wondered.... But this shade differed from the rest that I had seen today. So I concentrated on my ambush and when I saw it again coming, I aimed as good as I could at it, and pulled the trigger. But this time the rope of the reel was unfolding with frenzy speed. I managed to hit my target, but did not know what it was? I reeled in the rope with a steady speed, but whenever the fish was running, I released some rope, having the rope always stretched. After a few seconds, that looked like centuries, I took in my arms a second big sea bass, that was hit on its tail !!! Hugs and kisses...

"I should not have taken this fish too... but the Almighty Wanted me to have it and Gave it to me !!!" I thought. I did a couple more ambushes and I got out. I drove a little further and dove again. Here the visibility was better. The waters were much clearer even though there were some waves. Two more hours had passed without seeing anything remarkable. At one point, as I was swimming on the surface, I saw a few painted combers (Serranus scriba) gathered around a rock. I focused on the rock and I saw a camouflaged octopus (Octopus vulgaris).  I dove and started playing with it. It was about a kilo and a half. I spent several minutes playing with it. When I felt that I was harassing it, while it was trying to escape, I let it go.
(6th picture: The blow-up friend.....)
I swam to my car and got out. I took the pictures I wanted and cleaned the fish. The big one was probably fasting since its belly was empty, while the smaller one had a great appetite. It had swollen two small green ballan wrasse, a goatfish, an axillary sea-bream (Pagellus acarne) and a half-digested white sea-bream !!! Now this is what I call great appetite !!! I changed and put my cloths. Then I ate what I had brought with me. I was astonished, that despite all the ideal conditions, I did not see any fish. I prefer seeing them than catching them, but I did not see any .....

P.S. The big sea bass was 2.9 kilos, while the smaller one 2.5 kilos.
