As the days went passing by, there were the various jobs of All Weather John!!! Of course, when I arrived on the island, the summer vegetables in his garden were almost finished. Only the onions and a few tomatoes were left. This year he had planted three kinds of onions. Red, white and the familiar brown ones. (1st Picture: Dad and his onions!!!). After the onions had been in the sun for several days to dry, he put them in crates and we moved them to a shady and dry place.     Of course, there was also the nursery, where the new papaya plants were starting to grow. Because of Ethiopia, the whole family has a special love for tropical fruits. Maybe it is because they remind us of so many things... My father waited with pride for them to grow more, so he could plant them into the greenhouse he had built with so much love!!! (2nd picture: The new generation of papaya plants!!!).
Then it was the time of the wooden pergola. My father had already finished most of the work. The finishing touches were all that was left, and there I was the assistant. Bring this, grab the other one and of course I was holding the ladder. (3rd picture: The craftsman and his assistant...). By looking even for the slightest detail to be fixed, it took us much longer to finish. There I saw my mother who was looking and wondering what we were doing, so we called her superintendent. When she realised that we were not going to finish and it would take much longer than she expected, she disappeared…. (4th Picture: The superintendent!!!).
"Mommy must be bored..." I thought. But I reckoned without the innkeeper, as they say in Greece. At one point when I looked again towards the house, I saw her sitting comfortably in a chair, enjoying her refreshment, while supervising. (5th Picture: ... bored to wait standing...). I laughed loud and my father looked at me full of wonder. Looking around, he realised why.
After a few days, the weather calmed a bit down. Not that the it was windless, but a 5 Beaufort NNW winds were present. So I went and found my friend Marcus (from Austria) and we planned the dive. We decided to go to a deep place. Everyone loaded their things and drove away. After he left his family at the beach, we headed to the fishing spot. We got dressed and dived. Marcus was the first to catch a local goatfish (Mullus surmuletus). While swimming to reach to the fishing spot, I saw metallic fish traps for small shrimp, the Simiako shrimp, as it is known. They are usually thrown into the seaweed, but some landed on rocks. The fish traps were countless. Moving on and looking at the other ones, I noticed a good yellow goatfish (Mulloidichthys martinicus) next to the fish traps. I dived in, ambushed and caught it.        (6th Picture: The first fish of the day...). Slowly we reached the deep place. Rocks, monoliths and slabs at any depth you liked. Starting in the shallows, I began my search. I searched any rocks I liked. Moving on, I saw a pretty good white sea bream (Diplodus sargus) swimming around. The fish could go anywhere it wanted to, but instead it turned and got under a slab.
"It must have suicidal tendencies..." I thought. I dived sideways so the fish was not able to see me and approached the slab as calmly as I could. The slab was full of dead algae and the white sea bream was hidden itself. As I reached the entrance of the slab, I saw that the fish was looking at me. I didn't expect anything better and after aiming as best as I could, I pulled the trigger. The spear found it near the eye and skewered it. I pulled it out and have a 2nd fish of 400 gr. (7th Picture: Wellcome!!!). After a while, I saw a 3 kg golden grouper (Epinephelus costae). The fish swam under a large and familiar rock. I quickly changed my speargun and got a shorter one. Just as I was about to dive, the fish came out, swam and sat in front of another rock a little further away, looking into the crevice. I dived on the fish. As I approached it, the fish started to move away. The golden grouper moved among the rocks, did not enter any, but swam for the deep and we lost it. We did several ambushes at various depths just in case.... Swimming further down, we reached an awesome spot. A huge boulder on top of the abyss at -20 m. Below it was a stunning slab at -35m, ending in an underwater cave at -46m. (8th Picture: The deep slab, where on the far right there is the fatal cave at -46 m.). There about four years ago, two out of the three scuba divers went in and lost their orientation, drowned. The place was incredibly beautiful and wild at the same time. We did a lot of dives without seeing anything big, despite the awesome visibility. We were able to see up to -40m!!!. A sign that the place should be fished illegally (scuba spearfishing at night). We continued diving at the edge of the abyss, in various places. In one of them, I dived to admire the blue, that dark blue. As I looked down, a nice golden grouper, was ambushing on the edge, looking towards the deep. Unfortunately I hadn't activated the underwater camera. The fish realised my presence and as it started to swim for the deep waters, I pulled the trigger. The spear found the golden grouper on its back and I brought a 1.7 kg fish in my arms. (9th Picture: the golden grouper that was ambushing...). We continued a little longer and then turned towards the known reef and from there to the beach where we started today's dive. Markus saw a two kilos dusky grouper getting in a crack. He made some fruitless attempts and then I dived in too. There was a strong underwater current that pushed me back. I approached the crack and looked inside it. I saw a small dusky grouper, but next to it, there was something bigger. I aimed and pulled the trigger. The spear jerked, a sign that I had achieved my goal. I pulled the spear carefully out of the crack. It was a 1.4 kg mottled grouper (Mycteroperca ruby).          (10th Picture: The hidden mottled grouper...). The dusky grouper was gone. Finding no other fish, we began catching lionfish (Pterois volitans). In the very first dive, a little deeper than the mottled grouper, lionfish were piled in a crevice. I aimed at the biggest one. I caught a 1.2 kg fish which was also the biggest I had ever caught so far. (11th Picture: 1.200 gr. a new record!!!). As time was passing on and the afternoon approached, more and more lionfish were coming out of the shadows and swimming around, looking for something to eat. Continuing at the same pace, we caught 20 lionfish. (12th Picture: 1.100 gr. while Markus was swimming behind me...). Almost all the lionfish were about a kilo!!! We could have taken three times as many, but we started getting tired. We took the way back.                    (13th Picture: With this big mouth swallows everything!!!). Just before we head out, I spotted a local goatfish camouflaged near a rock. Unfortunately for the goatfish, I saw it. I dived a bit away from it, crawled and shot it. We took the necessary photos and cleaned the fish in the sea. There were a lot of different half-digested fish in the stomachs of the lionfish like black Damselfish (Chromis chromis) Mediterranean rainbow wrasse (Coris julis), etc.), but one had a small red scorpion fish (Scorpaena scrofa) that had just swallowed it!!! (14th Picture: Unfortunately...). Unfortunately the little scorpion had gone to meet the Creator. All the lionfish were fat, very fat!!! (15th Picture: Markus and I with the trophies!!!). We put the fish in the ice cooler and visited a local tavern, where we enjoyed various local delicacies and a couple of grilled lionfish. They were delicious. Captain Nikos had cooked them very nicely. At least these are eatable...

Title: Greetings from the beautiful Karpathos Island...

Title: Greetings from the beautiful Karpathos Island...

Video & Photos : Zacharias Skevofilax

I arrived by boat to my favourite island, early in the morning at the end of July. I drove to Arkasa, my village, and the strong NNW winds took all the heat of the previous days in Athens. Hugs and kisses with the parents, who didn't know I had arrived on the island, until I called them, when I got off the boat. After they had finished their lunch and went for a nap, I drove for a nearby fishing spot. I was going to spearfish in the waves of the storm. I found the small and well-known beach that had calm waters, I got dressed and dived at noon. The waters were a bit murky, but I didn't mind at all. As soon as I swam a bit, I saw in the sandy sea bed, a large lizardfish (Synodus intermedius) hidden. I didn't want to catch it, because I don't like its taste and it has too many tiny bones, but I wanted to film it.  (1st Picture: The lizardfish...), I get as close as I could until it jumped terrified and I lost it in the blur. (2nd Picture: ...terrified...). After a while, I saw a good sized trumpetfish (Fistularia commersonii) under my fins. I lower the power of the speargun, but the fish started to swim away. I shot it from the surface, it shocked violently its body, making strange noises and got free and was gone.
"It doesn't matter because it will live and probably will grow old due to this experience..." I said to myself and continued. Just before I reached the small cape, I saw a large school of parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense). I dived and waited to see which one was the biggest one. After a while, timidly the leader appeared. I shot and caught a 700 gr. fish. (3rd Picture: The first Carpathian fish...). While I was filming the fish, I realised that the underwater camera has taken some water!!! I couldn't do much. Fortunately the manufacturer, in its manual declared that it is waterproof on its own up to -10 m. I wasn't going to dive deeper anyway, because I was a bit tired and due to the weather. In the next two shots, I caught two big yellow goatfish (Mulloidichthys martinicus). (4th Picture: The big one 400 gr...). (5th Picture: The small one 350 gr...). The weather continued to be raffled and I was enjoying it. I have reached the place where the waves gathered dead algae. It is a thick mattress where one can easily lie comfortably. I usually look for goatfish or stripped sea bream (Lithognathus mormyrus) there. So I dived and while I was thinking about enjoying the relaxing on the seaweed, before I even lied down properly, different kind of fish came at me. There are three nice yellow goatfish, but they are followed by two good stripped sea bream. I aimed the closest one, pulled the trigger and caught a 300 gr. stripped sea bass. (6th Picture: The small stripped sea bream 400 gr...). At that point, I had reached the cape that has large boulders. There are fish hiding in the rocks, but they know well what spearfishing means!!! So as I crawled underwater on the rocks, I perceived the presence of a good white sea bream (Diplodus sargus). I had the fish vertically in front of me, but I wanted to be sure of it because of the waves. As it turned and I had a bigger target, it realised my presence and even though I pulled the trigger, it managed to avoid the spear and disappeared into the maze of rocks. Continuing on and looking for familiar recesses, I found two very large white sea breams. The fish were floating carelessly in mid waters and as soon as they realised my presence, I pulled the trigger. This time I was faster than the fish... I pulled the spear and I froze. I manage to catch a large white sea bream, weighting 1.100 gr. (7th Picture: The very big white sea bream 1.100 gr. !!!). I have many years to catch such a big white sea bream. In about the same area, several decades ago, I had caught my biggest white sea bream weighing 1.800 gr. !!! I happily changed direction and swam towards the beach, fishing. After all, I needed half an hour of swimming to get out. I notice a school of mullets (Mugil cephalus), grazing on the sandy sea floor, and dived. I was hiding among the rocks and waited. The fish, about 10 in number, grazed on the sand and approached me without realising my presence. I aimed the closest one and shot it. I caught a kilo mullet.           (8th Picture: One kilo mullet...). As I was getting close to the beach, I decided to do one last ambush. As I was sinking, a Mediterranean morey eel (Muraena helena) was searching among the stones of the sea bed.      (9th Picture: Mediterranean morey eel, the unexpected guest...). It was not very big, I didn't bother with it. All I wanted, was not to come at me, smelling the fish I had hanging around my waist. So I poked it gently with the spear and it quickly disappeared. Continuing my ambush, several yellow goatfish came my way and I caught one more. I decide to do one last dive and head out. There was a buoy where a fisherman sometimes moored his boat. There was also a rock that could hide me. I dived in and waited. As I was looking around, I become aware of a stripped sea bream presence far to my left. I turned slowly while digging the sand. The fish came closer and I shot it. (10th Picture: The biggest one 450 gr...). From the swirls it made, I realised that I managed to hit its spine. It was a little bigger than the previous stripped sea bream I had caught. I came out completely satisfied from the first Carpathian spearfishing.

Two days later, due to family obligations and in order not to miss the dive, I went to the same fishing spot, but at dawn. The 7th Beaufort NNW winds were holding up well. In my rush to dive, I forgot the underwater camera in the car. In the first shallow dive to warm up my lungs, a small amberjack (Seriola dumerili) came to me like crazy. At that point, I realised I didn't have my camera with me. Caught by surprise, I pulled the trigger and caught a 1.5 kg fish. I thought about going out and getting the camera, but I wasn't expecting to catch much, since I had recently fished this place. I caught 5 yellow goatfish and on an ambush I caught a half kilo white sea bream. Then as I approach the cape, I startled a large red parrotfish. I instinctively pulled the trigger and caught a 800 gr. fish. On another ambush, I caught one more amberjack, slightly larger than the previous one (2 kg.), and went out. I had many decades to catch some amberjack, even a small one in Karpathos, and today that I didn't have the camera, I caught two!!! (11th Picture: 2nd day trophies!!!).

Ένα ψάρεμα στο Ναύπλιο...Spearfishing in the area of Nafplio...

Title: Spearfishing in the area of Nafplio...

Title: Spearfishing in the area of Nafplio...

Video & Photo : Zacharias Skevofilax.

Nafplio is one of my sweetheart's favourite places to visit. When Stavroula hears the word Nafplio, before I even ask, the answer is: "Yeeees!!!". So I called Michael to reserve one of his rooms for us, thus we could escape the extremely hot weather over the weekend.
"There's also a pretty good fishing spot quite close by. More details when you arrive. Of course we will eat what you will catch..." he told me.
"Definitely and with all the family too, if it is as good as you say..." I answered him.
He said dryly: "You'll see..." and we hung up.
We loaded everything, and Friday at noon we hit the road. After a comfortable journey, we reached our destination. We unloaded the car and the afternoon found us walking through the narrow streets of Nafplion. It was a nice, fairly warm evening where the bright moon kept us company. With the lighting of the castle, the few clouds and the full moon made Nafplio magical. We ate, got ice cream too and after a long walk, we went to bed.
I woke up at dawn and left without making the siltiest noise so as not to wake her up. I had prepared my diving gear the previous day, so I disappeared in a split of a second. After a long time of driving, I arrived at Michael's place. The coast line didn't seem to be promising. The beach was rocky, like the rest of the scenery. I swam, crossed the big seaweed bed and got to where I wanted. A magnificent rocky bottom was laying in front of me. The first fish also appeared. Some big white sea breams (Diplodus sargus) disappeared before I could do the slightest movement. After all, my friend had told me not to bother with them and to look for black fish (groupers). The first golden groupers (Epinephelus costae) I saw were small. A 4-5 kg dusky grouper (Epinephelus guaza), it got under a rock and I never saw it again. Same with a 3 kilo one. I still can't figure out where it hid.... The first fish I caught was a goatfish (Mullus surmuletus). It was a school of about ten fish and I dived away from them. I crawled, approached them and shot the biggest one. (2nd Picture: It was smaller than I thought...). The goatfish was torn, but because of the wounds, after a few meters away, I found it lying on the sand. At that point, I realised it wasn't particularly big, so I left the rest alone. I had reached the best part of the fishing spot. I did a few ambushes but nothing came up. As I pulled off the bottom and ascended, I notice 3-4 golden groupers getting into a crack a little deeper. I rested and dived again. I approached the crack as calmly as I could. I had also dived a little sideways, so the fish was not able to see me. I emerged fully prepared and saw only one fish that had hidden in the bottom of the crack. Without thinking much, I aimed and pulled the trigger. I gently pulled the fish out, so I wouldn't get tangled. It was a 1.4 kg fish. (3rd Picture: The smaller one ...). Delighted, I arranged it and continued. I didn't see any other fish no matter how deep I dived. I decided to return, searching the shallows. To my disappointment I found out that the tropical sea urchins (Diadema Setosum) were starting to make their presence as well as the lionfish (Pterois volitans). As I swam, a black-red lionfish was strolling over a rock. It had spread all its wings and spines and was parading like a decorated cardinal. Easy target. I got it. (4th Picture: The first lionfish of the day...). Continuing towards my exit, I saw a promising rock. I dived in and got closer. There was a lionfish in it, bigger than the one I had already caught. I got that too.   (5th Picture: The biggest lionfish!!!).All in all, I got totally six lionfish and went out. I cleaned the fish on the rocks and filleted the lionfish to be ready for ceviche. The two large lionfish had been swallowed two black Damselfish (Chromis chromis) each. I was impressed by the fact that all of them were very fat!!! In the evening, together with the family of my host-friend, we had a fish-meal, as I kept my promise!!! Later on we went for a walk in the beautiful Nafplion. (6th Picture: The beautiful Bourtzi, lighted!!!).
The next morning again it was time for spearfishing. This time I would search another part of the fishing spot that I didn't yesterday. I had seen several rocks that I really liked on the way back, the day before. So this was the place I visited first. I swam a lot without seeing anything worth catching. At some point, my gaze caught a movement in the distance. Something had gone to hide in some stones, on the edge of the cliff. Looking carefully for the fish before it swam to the Tartarus, I dived. I approached the biggest rock, but found nothing. But in the next one, the body of a beautiful golden grouper was seen in a crack. I aimed as close to the head as possible and pulled the trigger. Sand flew up and clouded everything in the crack, proof that I had achieved my goal. But I didn't know how good my shot was, so I didn't pull the spear at all. With the rope of my reel stretched, I emerged. I tied it to my buoy and took the 2nd speargun I had. Searching, I found another hole, from which I could see the golden grouper's head. I shot it and secured the fish. On the next dive, I got my spear off the fish and on the next I pulled it out from the hole of the 2nd shot. The 2nd shot, was thought the eye and the fish came out almost dead. (7th Picture: The 2nd and 1.7 kg!!!). It was a golden grouper of 1.7 kg. I happily put it on my buoy, kissed it, asking for forgiveness and decided to swim a little further. As I was swimming a violent "break" from the black Damselfish caught my attention. Something scared them and it hid under the rocks. I dived and got close to where I thought I saw the movement. There was algae that grows on the stones that was hiding the cracks. With the help of the underwater flash light, I was able to see behind the algae. In the shadow of the hole, there was a nice fish. The beam of the underwater flash light spooked the fish and as it turned, I pulled the trigger. The spear found the fish in the neck. I took it out while the fish was shaking. It was a bit fatter than the previous one, 1.9 kg. (8th Picture: The chubby of 1.9 kg!!!). I was dancing on the surface, hugs, kisses and swam towards the beach without fishing. Fishing was over for today. I got out, cleaned the two golden groupers and left hoping no one had seen me. Nafplio and Michael had been very generous I must admit.
P.S. Michael, for his own reasons, asked me not to take photos of the fish-dinners and also not to mention who he was, and of course I am respecting his decision.

Title: First spearfishing after the ban of May 2023...

Title: First spearfishing after the ban of May 2023...

Video & Photo : Zacharias Skevofilax.

The weather forecast was predicting strong South winds with rain the next day at noon. The forecast made me wonder if I should postpone the dive.
"And what happens if the change of the weather comes late ...." a thought pierced my mind. I thought about it and started preparing my spearfishing gear. I loaded everything in the car and went to bed. The alarm clock rang early at dawn. I jumped out of bed, got dressed and headed for N.Evoikos Bay. At dawn I was in the cold and murky waters. The sea was thinly rippled. I was delighted by the fact and started eagerly my ambushes. On my second ambush three mullets (Mugil cephalus) approached me. I waited for something better to appear. But nothing appeared, so I aimed at the third and biggest one. I caught a 1.3 kg fish. Fishing had started surprisingly well. Come to think of it.... For the next two hours I didn't see a single fish. Dive after dive, I went deeper to my fishing spots, which were all dead. Nothing was swimming, and it was cold. The five millimetre jacket didn't keep me very warm either. Sea temperature on the surface was 18οC, I did a big circle and got out. I drove further down and dived again, after putting on a thicker jacket of seven millimetres. Last's week rains had put me on thoughts and so I took along a thicker jacket just in case. There was more life here. At least there were small fish around. This gave me courage and started diving. I wasn't cold at all and that gave me even more courage. But nothing big was swimming here either. In a moment, as I approached some rocks, my gaze saw something strange. I approached and saw a goby ( Gobius sp.) tucked into a hole in the rock watching me. (2nd Picture: The spy!!!). It has rolled its tiny pitch black eyes and was observing the huge black thing that was coming closer and closer towards it. When I got very close, it disappeared in the hole and as soon as I backed away, reappeared and continued its observation. A little further down a lilliputian nudibranch-sea slug (Flabellina affinis) went out for a walk. Now, whether it was looking for a mate or food, I didn't know. Following the fashion, it had combed its mane like a fence and showed off its blue antennae and body to any predator to-be, proclaiming that it was poisonous. Its inscription said: "No eating here"!!!. (3rd Picture: No eating here...). So it moved around, going where it wanted to go without having to hide.... I dived further down. The landscape was starting to change as the South winds began to strengthen alarmingly I could say. The blur made its appearance noticeably. I saw a good shadow disappearing into the blur. I immediately dived and waited. I did a few throat-clearings and scraped a rock with my glove. After a while, a school of mullets appeared followed by a sharpsnout sea-bream (Diplodus putanzzo). The fish came from the direction I expected it. I aimed, pulled the trigger and caught a 360 gr. fish.                    (4th Picture: Wellcome...). I got out and drove several kilometres further down. I was in a hurry to catch up the changing weather. I wanted to dive into this place and look it up. I had fished this place once before and was very pleased with the outcome. The place is huge and I don't know it at all. The bad thing is that it faces south, and the South winds were getting stronger. I dived in and it was just as I remembered. Immense algae but with many dead pinna (Pinna nobilis) and with rocks here and there. I made a lot of ambushes. In one ambush, mullets appeared in front of me. Most of the fish were about a kilo. I had decided not to catch any more mullets unless they were very large. So I waited and saw among them a nice sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). I aimed and shot just before losing it in the blur. From the movements of the spear, I knew that I had not missed. I dived and hugged an 800 gr. fish. (5th Picture: The small one...).
"It's a bit small... I thought it was bigger..." I said to myself. I made a few more ambushes and got out. I drove a little further down and dived again. I don't know how many ambushes I had made without seeing anything. Even the underwater camera complained. Its battery was dying. I did one more ambush before I hit the road for the return. As I was on the seafloor and looking around, to my left and quite a bit higher from the bottom, a good bass came. The fish looked at me and I froze motionless. I try not to move at all, but also not to stare at the sea bass. The fish passed me and I changed direction of my speargun a bit and pulled the trigger. (6th Picture: The big one...). I managed to hit the fish in the center, which was swimming violently and disappeared into the murky waters, taking few meters from my reel line. I pulled the line, bringing the bass into my arms. I took the video shots I wanted and covered it with kisses and apologies. Finally, the weather forecast, with a delay of about three hours, was accurate with its predictions. (7th Picture: All the trophies together...).
I went out very tired, after five hours of fishing. A sweet fatigue that makes you feel more alive. I don't know how else to describe this feeling in words, but despite all my tiredness, I felt really alive, full of Life. It's in these moments that you truly appreciate being Alive. Alive in this three-dimensional world we were Allowed to embody and enjoy the adventure called LIFE. This wonderful adventure called LIFE, that we often forget our destination in the midst of everyday events. But these moments remind us of the Greatness of Life that we have come to experience!!! It is in those moments we realise that no matter what plans we make, SOMEONE  ELSE Holds the reins of this deceptive world. All we have to do is try as hard as we can. But whether our efforts are being blessed or not, is not up to us. Then you open your arms and let go of what you thought was yours and just flow into Life. It is in these infinitesimal moments that you taste the True Life and you can say that you are also Free, truly Free... as the author N. Katanzakis said!!!
