Title: Just before the Coronavirus traffic ban...

Title: Just before the Coronavirus traffic ban...

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

The whole situation was telling me that traffic ban was on the horizon and that would probably last for a long time. Fear-mongering as much as possible by the TV channels about the corona virus. So I decided to go fishing, at the last minute just before the up-coming traffic ban, to my beloved N. Evoikos Bay. At the toll booths there was little traffic. Not because of traffic congestion, but because there was no human personnel to serve the passing cars. If someone wanted to pass through, he/she had to pay on the machines using cash or credit-card, unless you had the pass, that allowed the driver to pass comfortably. Of course, there were a couple toll officials who approached the drivers in case there was a problem. Later at the same night as I returned, almost all the TV channels showed traffic congestion at the toll booths. Not even a single TV channel used wide camera lens to show the whole picture. They had focused on the toll booths and showed that they were many cars and so they were passing very slow. No reporter said anything about the complete staff shortages. Fear-mongering and exaggeration together at its best!!!
But let's go back to our story. So I left at dawn and arrived after two hours of driving where I wanted. Got dressed immediately and I dove. I started my ambushes on a rocky seabed. The intense waves forced me to hold on to the various stones as much as I could, in order to maintain my underwater position. There were small fish in almost every dive. Some good size white sea breams (Diplodus sargus) appeared, but when they realised my presence, they disappeared into the blue. Ambush after ambush, I continued fishing alone. It is good to spearfish in pairs, but sea bass fishing is unfortunately a lonely sport. So in my icy loneliness the seconds were passing slowly, very slowly without seeing anything big. Hiding between the stones of the seabed, I waited for the surprise, which did not appear on the horizon. In an ambush, while I was lying among the brown-yellow seaweeds, I enjoyed the wonderful landscaped. A beautiful sea garden stretched out in front of me. While ecstatic gazing at this beauty, something was approaching me from my right. It was a large flock of  salema porgy (Sarpa salpa). They approached me reluctantly, they scattered at some point and after a while the whole herd returned and passed in front of me. With their golden stripes, they made the landscape look even more idyllic. Among them, there were quite large in size fish .....
"We are not here for salema porgy..... Zac .... Maybe something bigger will follow them ..." I said to myself and I didn't pull the trigger. But in vain. I continued my ambushes and in one of them small two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris) approached. As I was hiding among the seaweed, I noticed that something bigger was among them. It was a sharpsnout sea-bream (Diplodus putanzzo) that followed the herd of two-banded sea bream. I continued waiting and finally caught the first fish of the day.
(1st Picture: The 1st of the day...)
"Well done and the sharpsnout sea-bream is large enough....." I thought. I proceeded again without seeing anything special. At the end of this fishing ground, the bottom rocks were much smaller and fewer. I thought of making some ambushes before going out. So I approached the seafloor and waited. The seconds passed slowly and I was embraced by the icy sea loneliness. I was impressed by the various small fish. They were nervous and stayed very close to the rocks of the seabed. I thought I was the reason. This usually happened for the first few seconds. But the small fish on this ambush did not come off the rocks and that put me in thoughts.
"Maybe.....????" I wondered...Then I felt something was approaching me. I turned to my right and saw a nice sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). As I slowly turned towards the fish, it changed direction to leave. Having no other choice, I aimed as best as I could and pulled the trigger. The spear covered the distance in tenths of a second and all I saw was something shined in the blurry waters.
"Did I succeed ??? Or the fish managed to avoid the spear ??? ...." I wondered. There was not the slightest resistance on my spearfishing line and I slowly swam towards my spear sure of my failure. As I approached it, I saw the beautiful sea bass lying on the seabed among the stones. I was soooo happy. The spear stroke the wonderful sea bass on the side fin and got stuck-on its head, killing it instantly. Finally a nice sea bass and how I managed to catch it....and what a long shot .... I kissed it many times and put it on my buoy ready to leave. (2nd Picture:At last!!!) Besides, I had reached the end of the fishing spot and I wanted to go somewhere else. As I was swimming to get out, I saw a fish on the sea floor. I dove and it was a  gilt-head (sea) bream (Sparus aurata) about 700 gr, with a broken tail. (3rd Picture: ???). With a broken tail it was unable to swim and died. I felt sorry for the beautiful fish. It was dead for several days ... I went out and drove a little further down and dove again. Here the seabed was completely muddy. Of course, the water was even more cloudy. I swam to get where I wanted, when something caught my attention. I dove and saw a grey triggerfish (Balistes capriscus) about a kilo, sitting between some branches playing dead. Its skin had the colours of the environment so as not to be seen by predators and sat still. I videoed and left it alone.
(4th Picture: The cunning one...)I went ahead and got where I wanted. I dove and waited. I touched as gently as I could on the bottom, but I stirred some blur from the muddy seabed. In the background was a large herd of two-banded sea bream was approaching. But a good size gilt-head (sea) bream was ahead and as soon as it turned, I shot it and caught it. It was a fish about 800 grams..
(5th Picture: Just before the shot...)
"Well done again ..." I said to myself and continued. But apart from the small two-banded sea bream, I didn't see anything else and decided to go out. Searching for some common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis),  I caught two and went out. I drove several kilometres and dove again. Here the seabed was paved with many flat rocks. I made a lot of ambushes and in one of them, I saw nice striped sea-bream (Lithognathus mormyrus) far away. Turning the speargun to my left, I startled the already frightened fish that disappeared into the blue. But the whole movement aroused the curiosity of a sea bass. The small fish came to see me, turned around gracefully and left. A middle size striped sea-bream  was following the sea bass. Before it disappeared into the blue, I pulled the trigger. Although a long shot, I saw the silver fish sinking. I pulled the fish towards me. The spear had hit it in the back and had come out of its eye, killing it instantly. I kept fishing but I didn't see anything I wanted to catch and I went out.
(6th Picture: The last one of the day...) I changed, took some photos all the fishes together and drove back. (7th Picture: Done for today...) At the toll booths, the situation was the same as in the morning, without staff to serve those who traveled and the TV channels..... Later at night, the traffic ban was announced.....
PS. You may realise, that this article was written while in quarantine, for about a month and a half. One and a half months incarcerated due to a virus of dubious origin. We have as much time as we want, but with restrictions. A lot of anger and anxiety, among other things, about the whole situation and the lack of freedom. We can't go out as much as we want, we can't go to work or wherever we want and strangely enough we can go for a swim even alone. Like the Free Besieged of the old times.....The point is to feel free in difficult situations. When everything is easy, it is so simple. Living every moment, every minute, every second.... It's difficult you may say. I will answer: extremely difficult. But then and only then are we truly Free. Then and only then, nothing can limit or affect us. Everything seems so deceptive that it is not worth worry about such issues. Because they just don't touch you anymore. So it's worth the effort, it is a long term process, but the results can't be described. Words are very poor when someone's effort is blessed to experience something as divine as True Freedom ....
You may ask, why I am telling you this now ..... the ban is gone..... I hope I will be wrong, but sooner or later winter is coming. Keep that in mind .....
I am finishing my article with the words of a world-wide known and one of my favourite writers .....

I hope for nothing,
I fear nothing,
I am Free.

Title: Coronavirus on sight....

Title: Coronavirus on sight....

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

"Love, I have to go to aunt Sofia this weekend to bring groceries and whatever else she asked me to do ... because there is a chance that I won't be able to do it later, if the government puts a ban on traffic due to coronavirus ..." Stavroula told me.
"Do you want me to come too ???" I asked
"No, I'll go with my sister ..." she replied
"And when will you go ???" I asked again
"We will leave on Friday after work and we will return on Saturday night ..." she replied.
You realise what opportunity was given to me. I had the chanse to go spearfishing as long as they were going to aunt Sophia. But where should I go ????
"Ηι Theodore, I am free for spearfishing for couple days. Friday afternoon and Saturday all day. Are you able to.... ??? " I asked my friend on the telephone.
"Unfortunately, I can't go this weekend at all ... " he replied sadly
"I was thinking to go somewhere else ..." I told him.
"Why don't you go to ....." he told me. (Of course I can not reveal the fishing ground...)
"Very good idea. But I only know a small fishing spot there ..." I replied and he explained and described in details where I should I spearfish.
As soon as I finished all my obligations, I loaded my diving gear and hit the road. I arrived after driving for two hours, got dressed as fast as I could and dove. Then I realized that I had forgotten to put on my diving weights, from my mania to dive ...
"Zac, you are good, but not so good to fish without diving weights ..." I said to myself laughing. I put on the weights and dove again. I did not know this fishing ground, but fortunately Theodore's description was very accurate. It was a muddy seabed with seaweeds here and there and of course lady blur was present. I started the ambushes at once. At various points I saw nothing. Whenever I made the mistake and landed awkwardly on the muddy bottom, so much mud would rise that I had to stop my ambush. In such circumstances it would be useless to continue ambushing. In order to catch a fish, it had to run into my spear by itself. So I was careful as much as I could when I was landing on the seabed. In one of the many ambushes, I landed gently on the bottom and waited. I made the soft noises ...... The seconds were passing but nothing appeared. Suddenly I realized that a fish was in front of me. It had come from the deep and I hadn't seen it. As soon as it turned to leave, I pulled the trigger. The rope of the speargun was unreeling with frenzy ... After a while I had in my hands a two kilo sea bass
(Dicentrarchus labrax), a long but slim fish, that my spear had stuck it just behind its neck. Full of joy I took in my arms....

(1st picture: The first one of the day....) I arranged it in my fish holder and continued fishing. I did a lot of ambushes without seeing anything. I decided to go further. I did one last ambush before swimming in the most desolate place. At the end of the ambush I thought I saw something. I turned the speargun and pulled the trigger. I didn't feel anything on the speargun's rope and so I thought I had missed. Reeling in the rope, I felt it heavy. To my great surprise I saw that a sea bass over a kilo was on the spear. I had shot it in the neck and its spine was broken and the fish remained motionless on the seabed. I took it with full joy joy in my arms, hung it on the buoy and went out. Instead of swimming through the "desert", I decided to drive instead and dive where Theodoris had told me. This would save me time as night was approaching. As I swam out, I saw a teeny tiny sea robin (Chelidonichthys spinosus). It was much smaller than my finger. (2nd picture: teeny tiny sea robin !!!). I approached it and it started walking on the bottom. I approached it again, in order to force it to open its side fins, to show its wonderful colors. As I got closer, it started swimming, trying to avoid me. It probably got so scary, that speeded up, trying to pass between two roots of seaweed and got trapped !!! It tried to free itself by swinging its tail with incredible speed. I started laughing and almost got drowned. Eventually freed itself and got lost in the blur. I went out laughing, drove and dove again. The seabed did not changed much. The first part was just as muddy. Then a very large area covered with seaweeds appeared in front of me. I started ambushing but I didn't see anything. Moving on and I reached a stony sea floor. As I approach this new fishing ground, I saw a fish tail behind a rock. It was the tail of a whit sea bream (Diplodus sargus) or rather a sharpsnout sea-bream (Diplodus putanzzo) and was quite big. I did not turn on my camera, fearing the sound of the activation could drive away the fish that had not realised my presence. I approached quietly and shot it and caught a good size sharpsnout sea-bream. (3rd picture: Well come...). Near by there was a man-made wall just before the seaweeds. I dove and before I reached the bottom, a good sea bass took off. I continued my descent, landed on the sea floor and waited, but the fish never reappeared. I did some ambushes, maybe it would..... and I reached the seaweeds. I continued spearfishing for a while, but I saw nothing. In one of the last ambushes, a herd of 5-6 sea basses appreached me from behind. I realized their presence, when they had passed me. I turned around and shot the nearest one before it got lost in the blur. The spear went where I aimed to go and the sea bass trembling, fell on the seaweed.
(4th picture: One more...). I picked the fish from the seabed and full of joy and went out. It was getting dark and I was pretty tired. I changed and devoured Stavroula's appetizers. They tried to escape, but they did not have much luck. Then I got into my sleeping bag and Morpheus took me on a journey into unknown worlds.....               (5th picture: First day catches...)
I woke up at dawn, got dressed sadly because of the cold and wet spearfishing uniform and dove from where I had stopped fishing yesterday. The blur was present and in a ambush I thought I saw something. Without a second thought, I pulled the trigger and caught a sea bass over a kilo (1.2 kilo). I swam a little further down and the seabed had a sharp drop.
"Nice place for an ambush ..." I thought. I took a deep breath and dove. I was waiting at the bottom ... After a while a mullet (Mugil cephalus) swam towards me with great speed and disappeared in the blur. I was not discouraged, because I did not want to catch a mullet in this place and continued waiting at the seabed for something better. After a while a two kilos sea bass appeared. The fish came from above, just like the mullet, but I was ready. I aimed and pulled the trigger. The sea bass swam violently and unreeled a lot of rope, but after a while I grabbed it.(6th picture: The biggest of the day!!!). In the next ambush medium striped sea-bream (Lithognathus mormyrus) appeared. I didn't bather them, because I was looking for sea bass or something bigger. I went ahead and found a large area covered by seaweeds. In several ambushes, I saw many small and medium-sized fish that I did not bother them. As I was swimming on the surface, I notice something that did not quite match with the seaweed. The blury waters did not allow me to see clearly what it was. I dove and ambushed a bit further away. I realized that it was probably a common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis). I aimed and pulled the trigger. The spear pearsed the cuttlefish barely by skin of its back.(7th picture: The unlucky cuttlefish...) A little further down, I saw another cuttlefish spreading its tentacles to scare me, by looking bigger. I aimed and pulled the trigger. The spear hits the cuttlefish on its head, which threw its ink all over but got free ??? !!! The cuttlefish hid in the blur of its ink. Full of surprise, I dove and caught her with my hands. My shot was perfect. But how was the cuttlefish released ??? I put it on my fish hanger, but my spear is missing. Looking for it, I found it lying on the sea floor and the spear's line was cut.
"That's why it got free, even though my shot was in its head ..." I thought. I ambushed few more times and went out. I drove a few kilometers and dove. Here the visibility was much better. I did a lot of ambushes without seeing anything good. As I was swimming on the surface, below me there was a mullet swimming and it seems it did not realised my presence. I dove on it as quietly as possible and shot it. I caught a mullet that was just below a kilo (870 gr).
"Well done ..." I said and swam further. Some sea bass approached my next ambush. At the beginning they were two and as soon as they passed, another one approached me. The fish were a little less than a kilo so I didn't bother them. I continued and found discarded car tires on the sandy bottom. I dove and hid as good as I could among the tires. A flock of s
alema porgy (Sarpa salpa) came to me from the left. As I was staring them, I looked to my right and a flock of sea bass had arrived. They were 5-6 fish and the first one was the biggest one and it was a bit far away from me. It was a long shot and in order not to scare the herd, I hesitated to pull the trigger. But the last fish in the herd was a bluefish (Temnodom saltator). I aimed as bst as i could and pulled the trigger, even thought it was quite far away. The spear stroke it low in the abdomen and it disappeared with incredible speed. I did not put any pressure on the fish so that it would not be torn. It took me several minutes to catch it. It was a 1.7 kg bluefish.     (8th picture: The bluefish...). That's where the fishing ended. Although I still had half a day, I thought it was time to go home.

After eight days in beautiful Greece, we were banned from traveling due to a coronavirus.... (9th picture: Second day catches...)
PS1. However, there is an intermediate fishing just before the ban, but that is my next article .....
PS2. Happy Easter and Happy Resurrection to all, under the special circumstances this year. I wish to you my friends and your families to be well. Greeks are people of exaggeration, but also with a lot of filotimo If we look at how many of our fellow human beings are dieing by car accidents in one year or how many from the common seasonal flu ..... then it is understandable that the terror of the coronavirus should not haunting our lives. I repeat, we do not need to exaggerate at this stage. Let's be careful, yes, feared not ... and stay away from the news of TV ... and no more needs to be said ... Happy Holidays ...

Title: An incredible sea bass spearfishing!!!

Title:  An incredible sea bass spearfishing!!!

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

The unstable weather of previous days had put me in thoughts. The direction of the winds were changing within a few hours .....
"Should I ...." I wondered and started planning my next fishing expedition. Unfortunately my friends Theodoris, Nicolas or Alexis could not attend due to different obligations. So I decided to go to some familiar and very dear places in North Euboean Bay. I started at dawn and arrived just before the sun rose. I wore my fishing gear as fast as I could due to the outside freezing temperature (0 ° C) and dove in the warmth of the sea. (12 ° C) !!!.
The first fishing ground was covered with the stones and had pretty good visibility, which was a nice surprise, I could say. So I started my ambushes....I saw large schools of sand smelt (Atherina hepsetus) in almost every dive, without any predator appearing ... In one dive, big mullets (Mugil cephalus) appeared in the horizon. The fish stayed away from me, they didn't even get close to me, no matter what trick I tried, and eventually got lost in the blue sea. There was also a little gilt-head (sea) bream (Sparus aurata) with the mullets, which did not come close either. During the next ambushes, mullets, sometimes in large schools sometimes in small ones, were passing by.
"Maybe we should catch some Zac ... " I thought. In the next ambush four mullets appeared on my left. The fish were ignoring me. They were feeding on the sea floor, continuing their journey. I aimed and caught my first fish of the day, which was about one kilogram. After a while another four mullets appeared. These fish ignored my presence too and started feeding on the stones in front of me. The last one, was the biggest one and the closed to me. As it was feeding, a stone cover its head and it did not realise my presence. Realising the opportunity, I crawled on the seabed among the stones and approached the fish. When I was in range, I pulled the trigger and caught the second mullet of the day, that was over a kilogram. I continued my fishing and in the next dive I came across small sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Full of curiosity were looking at me and I was glad that they were swimming around me. Unlike the mullets, the small sea basses were staying next me until it was time to get some air. I went further ambushing. Again, mullets appeared.
"Now that we had seen sea basses, even small ones, let's not catch other mullets unless they're huge ...." I thought. I swam towards the sea shore because I seemed to see something. I wasn't sure what it was. As I landed on the seabed, I was surrounded by a huge flock of sand smelt. Their number was incredible. Magical moment. Wherever I looked, the fish were there. At some points the bait fish were so many that I could not see through them.
"It is impossible with so many bait fish some sea bass or some other predator should pass. The meal is ready ...." I thought. At the very next ambush and as I hid behind a stone a few meters further, I realised that a fish was approaching from my right. Its was coming from deep sea. I literally froze, lower my eyes and waited. The course of the fish was such that it would pass in front of me, but a little further away. It was a sea bass about two kilograms The fish was approaching me pretty fast, without slowing down. I corrected my aim and pulled the trigger. The spear found the predator in the middle. The sea bass tried in vain to get rid of the spear. (1st picture: The first catch!!!).
I embraced it, kissed it and apologised for the pain I caused it and hung it on my fish holder. Full of joy, I continued fishing without much success. A little further down the seabed was covered with more stones. Here, despite the many schools of bait fish, I saw nothing. There were wonderful green-yellow sponges of unmatched beauty in my opinion. In a dive and as I was going to grab a stone to hide, a good size common cuttlefish
(Sepia officinalis) jumped in front of me. It went a little further down and stoped behind some seaweeds
"Easy target ...." I thought. I aimed without paying much attention and of course .... I missed. I scratched the back of the cuttlefish, which disappeared in the blink of an eye.
"You deserved to miss it, because you thought you were going to catch it without any concentration on the target..." I confronted myself. Not because I didn't catch the cuttlefish, but because I was sure of the successful outcome. How many things and situations we take as granted in our lives that we should not ..... With these thoughts I got out of the sea, got into the car and drove to another fishing spot, several kilometres away. I knew this place too. It had almost no stones and the bottom was sandy with seaweed. When I got my head into the sea, I met a familiar being. It was the majestic blur in all its glory. I expected it would be cloudy, but the Madame blur had overdone it. In some ambushes, I could not even see the tip of my speargun. Knowing, from past fishing experience that the place held fish, I insisted on continuing my ambushes. I was looking for shadows. I didn't expect anything more. At some point, mullets came quickly and disappeared into the blur. I couldn't do anything. The visibility improved as I laid on the seaweeds. So in an ambush, it seemed to me that I saw a desired silhouette moving. I aimed as best as I could and pulled the trigger. From the stretch of the fishing rope, I realised that I had achieved my goal. I knew it was a sea bass, but how big ??? Reeling in the rope, I saw it was a sea bass over one kilogram (1280 g) and I had shot it just before its gills. (2nd picture: One more...) Happy with the second catch, I put it on my buoy with the and move on. A sea bass swam over me and in front of me and I didn't see it. Later the night, as I was looking at the videos I had taken, I realised what had happened !!!. After a few dives, in an ambush, I found it difficult to spot two sea bass. The second was the largest. On the one hand the fish were nervous, on the other the blur, I didn't manage to shoot them. I remained at the bottom making soft noises. Other smaller sea basses appeared, but I was looking for the big one. The two fish came back, but this time the smaller one was first. Knowing their course, I waited and as soon as the smaller one passed in front of me, followed by the bigger one, I pulled the trigger. The spear stroke the sea bass behind the eye and the fish fell on the sea bed. Its white belly was shining on the muddy bottom. I could not believe what I was seeing. I had caught a two-kilogram sea bass (1900 g).
(3rd picture: The biggest one !!!I) I hung this on the buoy with the rest of the fish and continued. I decided to rest for a while. As I sit down on the sand, I noticed a small creature moving on the sand. It is a teeny-tiny spiny spider crab (Maja squinado). It had cover its body with algae his body to avoid the passing by predators. Its legs were so thin and fragile that I took it with great care to show its lilliputian size on the video.
(4th picture: the monster...haha....) I let it go and continued with my fishing. In the very next ambush, a school of slightly smaller sea basses appeared in front of me. As they passed, I picked one of the biggest ones and caught it. The next ambush was on a bunch of sea weeds. But I was wrong in my estimate and landed a little bit ahead of where I wanted to, so the speargun was not covered by the sea weeds. If I pulled my self back to hide in the sea weeds, I would stir so much mud from the seabed, that I would not be able to see even my nose, as it is said. The seconds were passing torturously slowly, but something was telling me to stay in my post. Suddenly I realised a movement in front of me. Looking more carefully, I saw two fish-tails. I made some noises as a result of one fish came to see me and as it turned to leave, I pulled the trigger. The rope was stretching and I had caught another sea bass. (5th picture: The fifth one....) Looking at the video later on that night, I noticed that the sea bass had come from my left and a little higher than me, almost passed in front of me and I didn't see it. I put this fish with the rest, when my eyes caught something on the seabed.
"Probably it is a fish ..." I thought and dove. On the sandy bottom a teeny tiny red gurnard (Chelidonichthys spinosus) was playing dead. It looked like a small stone or a tree branch. As I approached it, it opened its side fins to look bigger. I got closer to it and the little creature took off with its beautiful wings open. They had a purple electric colour. It went a little further and sat again on the seabed. I got even closer and it swelled again to increase its size. When I got too close, it started to swim again with its fins opened.
(6th picture: The beautiful one....) I followed it and when it realised that I would continue to follow it, the small red gurnard closed its side fins and disappeared with incredible speed for its size..... I continued ambushing and managed to catch three more sea basses. Unfortunately the battery of my under water camera had ran out and there were no videos for them. Finally tired and almost frozen I got out. I looked around to see if there were any people on the beach and put the fish in the ice fridge, after I had taken some commemorative photos with the 7 sea basses and the two mullets ... got dressed and happy I drove back ....(7th picture: Done for today....)
PS # 1. My diving watch showed: 107 dives in 5 hours and 35 minutes which was the total fishing time !!!
PS # 2. A few days later our forks were on fire. We enjoyed Stavroula's delicacies along with some of the fish of the above story. We were accompanied by our dear friends Maria and Theodore. (8th picture: Together with our friends...)
