Title: Beautiful surprises in shallow waters...

Title: Beautiful surprises in shallow waters...

Video & Photos : Zacharias Skevofilax

Early in the afternoon, I found myself at a nearby fishing spot for a calm and enjoyable swim. At least thats how I was thinking of spending this afternoon. The light souther winds were particularly pleasing me. Indeed, the waters were a bit murky. I dived in and started the ambushes. At first I didn't see anything great. I was enjoying and looking at the wonderful seabed. In one moment, while on the surface, I saw a common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) flowing through the water effortlessly. I approached it to see how big it was. The octopus found a stone and disguised itself. I got closer to it and it swelled up to look bigger.
"It's about a kilo Zac... Let's leave it..." I said to myself. I dived in to get a video shot and it took off. It went further and ducked behind a yellow sponge. I turned the camera around and dived closer to it. I got the video shot I wanted and left it alone. (1st Picture: ...it thought it hid well!!!). In the next ambush, I landed on a rock and waited. Baitfish were coming and going, when at some point mullets (Mugil cephalus) appeared from my right. The fish were high above, close to the surface and swimming towards me. One of the first fish was the largest one. I aimed and when I was ready, I pulled the trigger. The spear hit the mullet in the middle and I had caught the first fish of the day which was 1.7 kg. (2nd Picture: The 1st of the day...). But the shot, cut the rope I was arming the speargun. After arranging the mullet, I tried to fix the speargun. It was taking me a while and the southern winds had dragged me further down a bit. As I was preparing the speargun, I realised that a nice common octopus was under my fins. I tried to finish as fast as I could and not to loose the spot where the octopus had hidden. When I managed to fix the speargun, I dived and shot it. After few minutes of wrestling, the 2.5kg common octopus was in my lap. (3rd Picture: The delicacy of 2.5 kg!!!).
"We're off to a good start, Zac..." I said to myself. Continuing further down and into one of the many ambushes, I noticed that the baitfish were spooked. I hid behind a rock and waited. In an instant all the baitfish swam towards me, meaning that the predator was following them. But I didn't see anything. I crawled a little foreword but the baitfish were much more terrified, not because of my presence. As I waited, I noticed a great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) was coming towards me in the blurry waters. As soon as it saw me, the bird changed direction, swan to the surface and it disappeared. At that moment the baitfish calmed down...       (4th Picture: An unexpected winged visitor!!!). A little further down, I did another ambush on some flat rocks. As I was waiting for something to appear, a black Damselfish (Chromis chromis) jumped out of a crack. It looked at me and fearfully shoved itself into the crack. The whole incident drew my attention and as I turned my head to the left, I saw a 400 gr. striped sea bream (Lithognathus mormyrus) appearing. The fish passed in front and I caught it easily. (5th Picture: The striped sea bream...). I dived again in case there was another striped sea bream. I waited long enough when mullets appeared in the background. Slowly in the blur they came towards me. I was trying to figured out which was the biggest fish. But a careless qilt-head sea bream (Sparus aurata) was also swimming towards me. It had not released my presence, came in front of me, nibbling the seabed and I shot it. The qilt-head sea bream went crazy, but it was too late. I brought the 600 gr. qilt-head sea bream in my arms. After kissing and did the rituals, I put it in the buoy with the rest of the fish.                 (6th Picture: Wellcome!!!). In the very next ambush, I hid behind a rock. Time was passing without seeing anything. As I looked to the far right, I saw a nice mullet. I turned 90 degrees staying hidden. The fish had not realised my presence and from time to time was digging the sandy bottom while swimming towards me. The fish was so close that I could touch it. Confident of my success, I pulled the trigger and of course missed. (7th Picture: I manage to miss!!!).
"You deserve this outcome because you were so sure of the success and didn't aim as you should..." I said to myself. As I was arming the speargun, I noticed a strange fish getting under some rocks. It came out from the other side of the rock, looked at me and under the rock again. I could not tell what fish it was, and that made me even more curious. I armed on the speargun to the lowest power and dived. As soon as I saw it, I shot it. The fish fell trembling to the seafloor, free from the rod. I caught it and realised that it was a big bogue (Boops boops). The spear had hit it in the head. Being a slim fish, it was not possible to stay on the spear. (8th Picture: Now this is a surprise!!!).
"What the bogue was doing here and why it was hiding???" I wondered. "Is it possible???" I dived in and waited. I saw striped sea breams in the distance, scratched the rock and waited. Instead of the striped sea breams, I saw two small amberjacks (Seriola dumerili). They did a few turns but stayed away. No matter what tricks I did, they stayed away zigzagging and finally disappeared. The sun was starting to set down meaning I didn't have much more time. I did another dive and waited. Striped sea breams and black Damselfish appeared. All the black Damselfish came towards me, a sign that the predators were following them. Indeed, two small amberjacks appeared again, but were lost in the blur. As if they knew I wasn't going to shoot them, the whole school of striped sea breams appeared in front of me.
"If you dare pull the trigger..." I said to myself smiling. "One more dive..." I said and dived. I ducked in as much as I could and waited. Almost immediately a small amberjack appeared. As it turned, I realised that it was not alone. A total of seven fish appeared in-front of me. I could not shoot the biggest one, so I shot the closest one. The amberjack started swimming like crazy, while I was trying to manage the fishing rope not to get tangled on any stones. After a short battle, I took it in my arms, kisses, apologies and of course thanking the Heavens for Their wonderful gifts. At a depth of only -4.3 m and in 25 seconds I shot the fish!!! (9th Picture: When the Heavens want to provide!!!). That was where my fishing expedition ended, or I thought so. Going out to the beach, I was close to a very good point and decided to do one last ambush. I dived and crawled into the crevice. I waited to see and then crawled again. In a moment, I became aware of a large shadow in the very shallows, as small fish run in panic. It was a big bluefish (Temnodom saltator). It swam over the rock I was hiding. I immediately emerged, but the fish did not accept my presence and disappeared into the blur!!! (10th Picture: When the Heavens do not want to provide!!!).
"It does not matter, at least I saw it..." I thought...and got out...

In cold & murky waters, but the big one escaped....

Title: In cold & murky waters, but the big one escaped....

Title: In cold & murky waters, but the big one escaped....

Video & Photos : Zacharias Skevofilax

The weather was cloudy. The rains of the previous days had greatly affected the visibility. But I loved it. I would fish a rocky spot and then go to the mud. This is what I call a very dear place of mine, which is always blurry. So I took the 100cm speargun and dived into oblivion. I dived and swam across a wide stretch of sand. But there was something that didn't match the surroundings, even though it was the same shade with the sandy seabed. Looking closer, I noticed a small common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) had came out early morning to find something to munch on. It was playing dead, until I approached it. Then puffed up to make itself looking bigger and when it realised the trick didn't work, it took off and I lost it. (1st Picture: Looking something to munch on!!!). I smiled, continued and reached the rocks. The ripple was gentle and didn't cause me much trouble. In the very first ambush and while I was crawling behind some rocks, among others, a school of goatfish (Mullus surmuletus) came to see me. They stayed on the seabed for a while, but a startled small fish scared them and swam away, although they reluctantly appeared again at the end of the dive.            (2nd Picture: The school of goatfish...). The sun had risen and through the patches of clouds, was passing through and occasionally warming the frosty dawn. In one of my innumerable ambushes, I landed next to a rock. I crawled forward and on the corner there was a large school of salema porgy (Sarpa salpa) and streamlined spinefoot (Siganus argenteus). The fish got scared and slowly started to leave. I waited a bit so it didn't spook if something was following them. When I realised that nothing was following them, I turned to see what was going on behind the rock. As I looked, I saw a good in size white sea bream (Diplodus sargus). As it started to swim away, I pulled the trigger. The spear fell behind another rock and I was not able to see what I had accomplished. I pulled the spear close to me, seeing that was without the fish.
"What happened here???" I wondered..."After all, I managed to hit the white sea bream!!!" I was thinking. Looking closer, I saw the white sea bream lying on its back on the grassy bottom. I caught it and found out that the spear had cracked its skull. It was a half-kilo fish. I happily embraced it and place it on the buoy. (3rd Picture: The big white sea bream !!!). The closer I got to the cape and the muddy place, the waters became murkier. So I decided to go out and get a shorter speargun. As I turned around, I realised that a good white sea bream had come up to the surface to check me out!!! I turned the speargun, but the white sea bream calmly deepened. I dived behind it as quietly as I could and as soon as it turned a little to see me, I shot it. The spear hit it in the center and I caught my second fish of the day which was 400gr. and went out. (4th Picture: The second white sea bream...). I drove the car, brought it closer to the cape, took a shorter speargun and dived. Things were very difficult here. The blur was indescribable!!! I could barely see about a meter. But in the third ambush, I saw that a nice figure had come to see me. I realised that it was a nice sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). It approached me suspiciously and at a very slow speed. It made the mistake (due to the blur) of approaching me too close and slowly. I had all the time I needed to aim and shoot it and so it happened. So I caught a nice sea bass of 1,700 gr. Delighted, I put it on my buoy and continued. (5th Picture: The beautiful sea bass...). In another ambush I was surrounded by medium size sea bass. I didn't bother them, while I was looking for something bigger. In fact, one of them came so close that it almost touched the spear. I smiled. I never saw them again. I swam further away and reached a point where there was a sunken wall. In the past, I had seen and caught some nice fish here.
"Let's try and see..." I said to myself. I hid behind the wall and waited. After a while mullets (Mugil cephalus) came. I waited to see if a predator was following them, but in vain. Another one passed. It seemed a bit small. Then an even bigger one, but behind it appeared an even bigger one. I aimed and pulled the trigger. The mullet left for the depths with incredible speed. The unfortunate being did what it could, but in vain. After a while it was in my arms. It was a two kilos fish!!! (6th Picture: The big mullet...). Another great gift. I arranged it together with the sea bass and went a little further down.
"Let's not catch any more mullets today Zac..." I said to myself. As if they heard my thoughts, a very large school of mullets passed in front of me. Some fish were about two and a half kilos!!!
"No more mullets..." I reminded myself as my finger unconsciously started pressing the trigger. (7th Picture: The lucky one...). I didn't shoot them and just admired how easily and quickly they traveled through the water. While I was looking at the fish, I saw a very long shadow in the middle of the school!!!
"Ether it is big sea bass or big bluefish (Temnodom saltator)!!! The target was very big. If I dive it might get scared and swim away...." I managed to think. I aimed as best as I could from the surface and pulled the trigger. The spear hit the big predator, who with a flick of its tail disappeared into the blur. I pulled the rope to I fight the fish, but I felt no resistance. The could not reel-in the rope but it didn't jerk. I dived into the blur following the rope and found it tangled on a rock. I untangled it and emerged. The line was cut as if by a sharp blade!!! (8th Picture: Yet it managed to cut the line!!!). Of course the spear was also lost. I dived several times to find the spear, but in vain. So ended my fishing somewhat ingloriously but on the other hand the dive was wonderful...

A good start...a great end!!!

Title: A good start...a great end!!!

Title: A good start...a great end!!!

Video & Photos : Zacharias Skevofilax.

As I finished work early, I decided to go for a quick spearfishing nearby. The gentle S. S. W.  winds was whispering to me about shallow ambushes, and so it happened. I arrived, got dressed with incredible speed and dived. There, at-2m, under my feet there is a loggerhead Mediterranean Sea turtle (Caretta caretta). I didn't expect to see anything when I went in, so I jumped in splashing in the sea. As a result I scared the turtle. It was swimming calmly, but it wouldn't let me near it. After I got the video shot I wanted, I dived just in case... but the turtle flapped its fins and disappeared into the blue.        (1st Picture: An unexpected beautiful surprise!!!).
"Nice start Zach..." I said to myself smiling. After a few fruitless ambushes, I noticed distant shadows above the bottom.
"They must be striped sea breams (Lithognathus mormyrus) and from the looks of it they are good in size..." I thought. I went a little further away and dived. I crawled and hid between two stones and waited. After a while the fish approached me suspiciously. Τhey passed in front of me, but I was looking for the biggest ones. The smaller ones came close first, but behind them and a little far away, a good one appeared. I aimed as best as I could and pulled the trigger. The spear hit the target but I notice the stripped sea bream was free!!! It did a summersault and floated on its back in mid waters. The spear hit the fish high in the head, killing it instantly as it fractured its skull. I dived in and caught the stripped sea bream. (2nd Picture: If you are lucky...). Continuing a little further down in another ambush and as I crawled to the bottom, I noticed three mullets (Mugil cephalus) in the shallows. The last one was the biggest fish. I waited and when I thought it was the right moment, I pulled the trigger. The spear found the mullet low in the belly and with a sharp movement, it got free and swam away.
"Come on again..." I said. But I noticed that the fish was not swimming well because of the wound and that it was going even shallower. I quickly picked up the spear and started loading the speargun, while following the mullet. I had cornered it and continued preparing the speargun. When it tried to leave, I swam and blocked its path, forcing the fish to turn back. After a few seconds that seemed like ages, I was ready again. But the waves made the aiming difficult. I won't have another chance if I miss. As a wave passed, I pulled the trigger and caught the one kilo mullet (1,100 gr.).                        (3rd Picture:...If you make the same mistake twice...). I put the mullet on the buoy and continued. As I continued, having made several fruitless ambushes, I notice a large school of black Damselfish (Chromis chromis).
"Is there a chance???" I wondered and dived. Along with the black Damselfish there was also sand smelt (Atherina hepsetus) close to the surface. A huge school of medium-sized two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris) also appeared, followed by  bogue (Boops boops) and Dusky spinefoot (Siganus sp.). Rainbow wrasse (Coris julis) was swimming around me and in this amazing setting, I waited for Leviathan to emerge from the depths. But in vain, not a single predator appeared. I went a little deeper just in case... I sank into a hole and waited. A good size White Sea bream (Diplodus sargus) came from my right. I ignored it and this encouraged the qilt-head sea bream (Sparus aurata) that was following to approach me. Bait fish were all around, swimming carelessly, a sign that nothing big was in the area. So I turned towards the qilt-head sea bream and as soon as it passed in front of me, I pulled the trigger. The spear found the fish in the back and came out above its eye. The fish just sat upside down on the seabed. (4th Picture: Well-well, welcome darling...). I happily took the 600 gr. qilt-head sea bream and put it together with the rest of the fish. As I arranged the fish, I noticed a small fish not swimming well. I dived and caught a Blotched Picarel (Spicara maena). I hold it gently to gain strength and let it go. I did it 2-3 times and in the end it seemed to me that it was in a much better condition. (5th Picture: Lazarus !!!). I'd reached the end of the fishing grounds where there is a large and long hole on the sea floor. In the past I had caught big and nice fish here. I took a deep breath and dived. I crawled, I crawled. To my right the plateau was empty. So I crawled to my left and waited. I saw mullets passing close to the surface but I didn't bother them. As I turned my head to the right, I saw a leerfish (Lichia amia) approaching me. As it turned, I shot it. The fish started immediately its fight. Knowing that my shot was very good, I did not let the fish any choice to fight hard, and brought it quickly into my hands. It was a bit small (1.7 kg).       (6th Picture: The mistake...it was a bit small...). The blurry waters and being so close to me, tricked me, and I made the mistake catching such as a small fish. So I got out. I put the fish in the ice cooler, but something was telling me to fish the next bay. I drove up there and decided that would fish only for 30 minutes. As I swam I saw striped sea breams. I found an abandoned old anchor and dived next to it. The striped sea breams were nowhere. I waited in case... but a  pearly razorfish (Xyrichtys novacula) came furiously from the left. Curiously examined the speargun, went to the other side of it, turned around again, biting the speargun a couple times and swam on its way!!!. (7th Picture: It had a great appetite!!!). In the penultimate dive, as I was lying on the seabed and various small fish were surrounded me, I perceived the presence of a large fish, marginally in the blur. I made various soft noises and gained its curiosity. The fish turned and started swimming towards me. I literally froze. I didn't even move my eyelids. It was a nice qilt-head sea bream calmly approaching me!!! I could shot it in the face, but the its body movement told me I didn't need to rush. As soon as it turned and I had a bigger target, I pulled the trigger. The spear hit it in the middle and the qilt-head sea bream, after making a summersault, fell on the sea floor. Joys and celebrations. Hugs, kisses, apologies and thanks to the Heavens for their amazing gift...It was a 1.6 kg fish. (8th Picture: At last...a gorgeous winter queen!!!). I made my way out, having only done a couple of dives. At that point, I saw the striped sea breams again.
"Let's do one final dive....Lets look but we won't catch a striped sea bream..." I said to myself and dived. Indeed, after I landed on the bottom, a school of stripped sea bream came from my right. As one of the largest ones was passing in front of me and I had a shot, I realised something very large was approaching me from my left and close to the surface. I waited and saw passing in front of me a loggerhead sea turtle. It looked at me and when it realised what I was, it quickly disappeared into the deep blue. (9th Picture: The most beautiful ambush of the day!!!). This was my first time ever that a sea turtle approached while ambushing!!! The most wonderful end of today's fishing expedition...

Title: The unexpected large gilt-head sea bream, sea bass & moray ells....

Video & Photos : Zacharias Skevofilax.

At the eve of the elections, I woke up early to go to my beloved Ν. Evvoikos Bay. I hadn't fish this fishing spot for several months. On the one hand the many rains, on the other τηε tοο many earthquakes, I did not dare to attempt it. At this point in time, it seemed that everything would be fine. I literally pulled out myself from the sweet warmth of my bed and left. Everything was loaded from the day before. After about two hours of driving in the dark night, I arrived at my destination at dawn. I quickly got dressed and dived. For the next two hours I saw nothing worth catching. All the fish were small. Disappointment... I changed place and went to fish in the seaweeds. At first, I saw 2-3 small sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and I cheered up. Unfortunately the joy did not last long. I made several fruitless ambushes in the seaweed. At one point I felt something approaching me from behind. I turned gently to find that out of that a school of about 10 small barracuda (Sphyraena sphyraena) came to inspect me. (1st Picture: The next generation predators...). The fish came from my right, stopped in front of me, and then slowly moved away and disappeared into the blur. At the end, just before I go out, I saw a Mediterranean rainbow wrasse (Coris julis) sitting among the seaweed. Its body posture was telling me something was going wrong. I approached the little fish and found that together with a dusky spinefoot (Siganus sp.), they had been caught on a fishing line. I looked to see if there was a fisherman around, but the line had been cut a few meters further. I picked up the fishing line and emerged. There, on the surface, I released both fishes. Luckily they were still alive. Just before I left, I also found a dead mullet (Mugil cephalus). I wondered what was the cause of its death, and went out.
"Things are going to be difficult Zach..." I said to myself. I got out and drove quite a bit further into a difficult to spearfish spot. Difficult because it is almost always cloudy and a lot of things were laying on the sea floor. (wires, branches, wood, etc.). The first part, although it is one of my favourite spot, was completely empty, deserted.
"Should we just give up and leave???" I asked myself. "It has been 3 hours and we haven't seen anything special..." I thought. "Let's make one more effort and then leave..." I said to myself. I found a place I knew and dived. I waited among some branches and reeds in case my luck changed. Suddenly from my right came a nice mullet. I turn to see it and didn't realise that a good in size sea bass was coming from the opposite side. The sea bass swam in front of me and as soon as I realised and turned slowly the speargun, it got scared and changed sharply direction to leave. I made a soft sound in my larynx and the fish turned and swam back to see me. But this time I was ready and as it was about to leave once more, I pulled the trigger. The spear found the fish in the eye and the sea bass laid on its back on the seabed. (2nd Picture: Finally, 1.7 kg!!!). Full of joy, I grabbed it and kissed it many times. It was a 1.7 kg fish. A little further down I saw some shadows on the sea floor. I immediately dived in and waited. Mullets appeared. I didn't bother them and then some sea bass followed. (3rd Picture: Wild beauty!!!). The fish were plentiful and everywhere. Mullets were also coming. Some fish were so close I could touch them. One sea bass went over the speargun and another one under it! A mullet nearly bumped on me! A few sea bass were pretty good in size, but I decided not to shoot them and continued enjoying the scenery. On the next dive, many annular sea-bream (Diplodus annularis) appeared initially. Then the mullets and finally hesitantly some sea bass appeared. (4th Picture: No Comments!!!). I didn't pull the trigger again. On the next dive, sea basses appeared first and then mixed in with mullets. At that time, I saw the biggest one and as soon as it passed in front of me, I shot it. The spear hit it in the center, breaking its spine and the fish sat in the shallows, on the bottom. (5th Picture: The second sea bass...). I embraced it and did the ritual. I went a little further down and decided to go to the shallows so as not to swim in the bay and after crossing the cape to get out. (6th Picture: The 1.3kg sea bass...). By doing so, I would fish other parts of the area. Lots of mullets approached me in an ambush, in the very shallows. Some fish were quite big, but I didn't give in and let them passed. I reached the cape and passed it fishing closer to shore this time. Here the bottom was more rocky but just as murky. I ambushed but nothing. My intuition was telling me to crawl towards the end of the rock I was laying on. Indeed, I proceed as calmly as I could without moving my fins. Suddenly a large gilt-head sea bream (Sparus aurata) emerged from a recess. I could barely see the fish. It had realised my presence, and it was ready to swim away. I did not have any other choice but to aim and pull the trigger. The spear stroke it low and the fish fell to the bottom in shock. As I approached it, the large gilt-head sea bream started swimming like crazy and I just watched it, keeping the rope taut. After a few seconds, which seemed like a life time, I brought the fish into my arms. (7th Picture: The two kilos winter queen!!!). The spear had found the bream low in the belly and it did not tear because its lower fins. Second time The Heavens    provided me with a fish caught by the ventral fins. (See the previous article with the three-kilogram bluefish)!!!. The gilt-head sea bream was almost two kilos (1.950 gr.). Hugs, kisses and thanking the Heavens and Their wonderful gifts and I went out. After changing, I decided to clean the fish. I found a place I liked that had pebbles and started cleaning. At some point, my eyes caught a movement. Two morey ells (Muraena helena) had come very close to me. I threw them various pieces of fish guts, while I was hiding behind a rock and they almost came out of the water to eat.!!! (8th Picture: The uninvited guest...).
P.S. The sea bass along with other appetisers, we enjoyed it with a special company a few days later. !!! (9th Picture: Along with Pantelis & Mina!!!).
