Ένα ψάρεμα στην Σίφνο...Spearfishing in the island of Sifnos....

Title: Spearfishing in the island of Sifnos....

Title: Spearfishing in the island of Sifnos....

Video & photos : Zacharias Skevofilax.

Sifnos Island is one of the wonderful jewels that adorn our Aegean Sea. Stavroula and I were there for a few days, guests of Marina. Marina is a colleague from school and has an amazing house, above Chrysopigi. The view from her veranda is breath taking. You can see the islands of Naxos, Paros, Antiparos and Folegandros, when the weather permits it. (1st Picture: The amazing view!!!). The endless blue before your feet. Like a magical blue carpet, it fills you with calmness, energy, etc. Words are poor to describe what one feels gazing at the Aegean Sea from Marina's veranda. Especially lying in the hammock, I fell asleep many times!!! (2nd Picture: Stavroula in the famous hammock!!!). Marina as a hostess was impeccable. We felt like we were at home. Unfortunately, Anna her sister, Antonis and her son Thanasis were missing from our group. Anyway. But we had Aris, an amazing spoiled darling cat who filled in the gaps of our company!!! (3rd Picture: Stavroula with the famous cat Aris!!!). As an island, it is purely Aegean. It has enough quarries, the traditional ceramics (we got a lot) and let's not forget the delicious local macaroons. We devoured them. We went and bought them from the production line. We saw ms Katina with her son Vasilodimos to shape, dry and prepare them. (4th Picture: Ms Katina and Vasilodimos on the spot!!!). With lots of love and passion, they presented us their handmade local macaroons. As if they were the most expensive and precious  gems. And about the taste... what can I say... I hope they would keep this tradition alive in this technologically developing world, where such professions are lost on the altar of profit alone.
The only negative thing we saw, during the few days we stayed on the island, were the prices in the restaurants. Prices have skyrocketed. I'm not speaking about gourmet food. Even the simple-traditional dishes were expensive and for no reason, in my opinion.
Now let's talk about spearfishing, which is my great love. The weather didn't help me at all. The 5-6 Beaufort meltemi (NNW) winds started in the morning, to subside late in the afternoon. Every day the weather was the same. So, we decided to go to the north, to a windless beach, where Stavroula and Marina could enjoy swimming in calm waters and I could fish. I dived in and swam towards the cape. Along the way I dealt with some good goatfish (Mullus surmuletus) but the first two I shot, escaped.
"It's okay, let's continue..." I said to myself. A little further down I saw another goatfish. This was the biggest one I had seen so far. I followed it until it hid behind a rock. I dived a little further so as not to startle it, but it poked its head out of a rock and looked at me. I aimed as best I could and pulled the trigger. The spear hit its target in the eye and I had the first fish of the day. It was 350 gr!!! (5th Picture: The first fish in Sifnos island of 350 gr.).
"Now we are talking..." I said happily. The rocks were ending at -20m and then the seaweeds appeared. I did some ambushes but didn't want to go deeper since I was alone. I was sure that there would be big fish deeper.... It had been over an hour and I hadn't seen anything worth catching. As I swam, I saw a lone small amberjack (Seriola dumerili) coming towards me. Quick dive, made some noises and the fish turned and approached me.
"How big is it???" I wondered. The fish was much deeper than I thought and when it approached me and turned, I realized it was good in size. Noises again, it turned to see me and approached me again. As it turned I shot it behind the gills. In the adrenaline, I close the camera too early, so I missed some good video shots. After a short fight, I got on my hands the two kilos amberjack. Joys and celebrations. (6th Picture: Now we are talking, 2 kg!!!). A little further down on, there were large white sea breams (Diplodus sargus) on several rocks. Some fish weighed about a kilo. As soon as they realized my presence, they disappeared in the seaweed. Some might still be running!!! Continuing on, as I was swimming and approaching the care, my eye caught a movement next to a rock.
"It looks like a grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) but it's small???" I thought. I dived without activating the underwater camera. Indeed, it was a small dusky grouper, but from a large rock nearby a big rock wrasse (Symphodus ocellatus) emerged. As soon as it noticed me, it turned to leave, but the spear was much faster. (7th Picture: The big one, it was one kilo...). But the spear got stuck in some algae. So I dived in again and brought them all up. It was a kilo fish. Then I saw again a school of white sea bream. The fish immediately disappeared swimming towards the care. But a large two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris) remained motionless at mid-waters. I approached and dived. The fish was quite big but very thin. I touched it with the speargun and it went a little further and waited. The same happened over again. I surfaced, took a deep breath and dived. I approached it and just before I grabbed it with my hand, it went away. (8th Picture: Something was wrong with this fish...). I left it alone and swam to reach the cape. As I unmasked, I had to counter of 6 Beaufort of NNW winds. Things were very difficult. I dived and ambushed where I thought the white sea breams had gone. While I was waiting, looking at some parrotfish, when in front and to my right, a nice white sea bream jumped out of the rocks. The fish left but the spear skewered it. (9th Picture: The beautiful white sea bream!!!). It was a 600 gr. fish. Joys and celebrations. I did a few ambushes but didn't see anything and decided to turn back. I was surprised that I didn't see any lionfish (Pterois volitans), no matter how hard I looked in the shadows, but I found thousands tropical sea urchins!!! I decided to do an ambush on a big rock. As I laid down and waited, my eye caught a movement in a bundle of seaweed. I turned around slowly and saw the tail of a good rock wrasse. It looked pretty big. It had put its head in the seaweed but rest of its body was visible. The fish turned to see me. I aimed and caught an 800 gr. rock wrasse. (10th Picture: The smaller one of 800 gr.). I decided to go out. Swimming towards the girls, I saw a common octopus (Octopus vulgaris). I dived and grabbed it with my hand and emerged. I realized it was small and let it go. It smeared ink on me twice, went to the bottom and hid. After disarming the spear gun and swimming to get out, I found, at about 3-4 meters deep, an old cannon on the sea bed. Rusty, but whole. Where did this fall from??? It should be from the time of the Greek revolution, if not older. (11th Picture: How old was it???).I cleaned the fish and went out.
PS We ate the small amberjack the next day. It was delicious!!!

Ντε ζα βου σε χρόνο & τόπο αλλά με κρανιό, γοφάρι κλπ Deja vu in time & space but with Tiger tooth croaker, bluefish and more

Title: Deja vu in time & space but with Tiger tooth croaker, bluefish and more...

Title: Deja vu in time & space but with Tiger tooth croaker, bluefish and more...

Video & photos : Zacharias Skevofilax.

1st Day 06/01

I decided to start my spearfishing as I had finished off in May, with a déjà vu in exactly the same place and duration if possible. So the afternoon found me getting dressed in my favourite murky waters looking for trophies. I started swimming towards the abandoned platform. Of course, I would be fishing along the way. In one of the many ambushes, I found a familiar post with short seaweed and hid as much as possible. Several seconds passed and a striped sea-bream (Lithognathus mormyrus) was seen in the background. It seemed a bit small to me and I didn't bother. This probably calmed the grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) that was following. The fish approached me and turned to leave. Realising that it wasn't being followed by anything better, I shot it just before losing it. After a short struggle, I had in my arms the first fish of the day, a 1.4 kg grey mullet. (1st Picture: The first fish of the day, a 1.4 kg grey mullet...). In the following ambushes I saw nothing, but I had approached the platform. In the middle of nowhere and while I was on the surface, I was surrounded by a huge school of grey mullets. While I was looking at the fish, I notice there was also a small bluefish (Temnodom saltator) among them. The bluefish passed me only to turn around after a while, only to miss the tip of the spear.
"Go call the elders of the family... We haven't come here for grey mullets Zac..." I said to me and went under the platform. There the grey mullets were countless. (2nd Picture: Magic!!!). I was almost pushing them in some spots to get through, and the fish were big. Most of them were about a kilo, but I also saw fish that they were about 2 kilos. When I hid behind a pillar and stood still for a while, they would come in front of me, as if they wanted me to be filmed. There was no way to shoot them and spoil such magic moments.
"Just seeing this sight is enough for me, even if I don't catch anything else..." I thought ecstatically and continued to stare at them. Everywhere I looked the magic of the
grey mullets was present!!! In an instant, I noticed two different silhouettes flowing between the grey mullets. Two good in size bluefish were swimming carelessly, looking for their next victim. Without much thought and as quietly as I could, I dived. I aimed and pulled the trigger. Having recently lost a similar fish, this time I made sure to aim well. The spear hit the predator diagonally and must have broken its spine, because the bluefish did a somersault and landed on one of the pillars. To be sure, I did not pull the fish towards me, but dived in and caught it.                 (3rd Picture: The 2 kilos bluefish!!!). It was two kilos. Hugs, kisses, apologies and thanks to Heavens for their wonderful gift. Under other circumstances I would have left. But since a whole month had passed without fishing, I decided to enjoy my outing even more. In every dive below the platform I saw many grey mullets. I was fooling around with them while at the same time looking to see if there was anything else. So in an ambush, among the grey mullets, I saw a small sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) swimming below me. As I was looking it, I saw a larger one disappearing into the blur. Instinctively I took aim and shot it. The fish and the spear were lost in the blur. I gently reeled in the spear but it came a bit heavy. After a while I had a 1.1 kg sea bass in my arms. (4th Picture: It was marginally small, 1.1 kg...).
"'It's marginally small..." I said to myself. I decided to make a big circle and get out. I left the platform so as not to be tempted and start shooting grey mullets. I did a lot of ambushing to no avail, but I didn't mind. At some point I noticed something strange at the seabed. Many red-mouthed rock shell (Stramonita haemastoma) had literally cocooned a white sponge. Or they had gathered for a group feasting or a group orgy!!! You decide!!! (5th Picture: The red-mouthed rock shells ???!!!). In the next ambush a lonely grey mullet came to see me from my left. The fish passed in front of me and disappeared into the thick blur. A little further down, I had approached a large tree trunk underwater. I did an ambush and waited. Small fish ( annular sea-bream (Diplodus annularis) and striped sea-bream) came to see me and left. I remained at my post mentally hugging my hazy mistress (the sea). Then, with suicidal tendencies, a large Sharpsnout sea-bream (Diplodus putanzzo) appeared in front of me. I didn't even have to aim. I pulled the trigger and caught a 580 gr fish. (6th Picture: The 580 gr Sharpsnout sea-bream...).
"That was easy..." I said to myself. When I was done with the video, I arranged the fish on the buoy. While I was getting ready to go out, a beautiful common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) had come to see me and was laying on the sea floor close to me. I armed the speargun as fast as I could and shot it. I caught a half a kilo common cuttlefish. (7th Picture: It filled the area with ink!!!).
"Done for today,... we've caught enough fish...tomorrow again..." I said to myself and went out. I cleaned the fish and devoured Stavroula's delicacies. Sleep found me planning tomorrow's dive... (8th Picture: The end of day one.).

2nd day 06/02

I woke up early at dawn and dressed eagerly I could say. I didn't care if I would find any fish. I just wanted to be free and dive without any restrictions (May). I started my ambushes, but only saw small
grey mullets, numerous but all small. In another well-known spot, the grey mullets were replaced by small-sized sea bass. They circled me, followed me to disappear into the blur, but after a while they came back wondering about this big and clumsy creature sitting on the sea floor. I just enjoyed it as much as I could. Then again the small grey mullets appeared. They were almost everywhere.
"This is good... If they let them grow up..." I thought. In many dives I had not activated the underwater camera, since there was nothing interesting. So when a beautiful
Sharpsnout sea-bream came to see me, I shot it and of course there is no footage of the shot. (9th Picture: This was bigger, 700 gr.).
"That was a mistake Zac..." I said to myself and I proceeded to the old platform. It was full of
grey mullets, countless small grey mullets. In almost every dive they were present. I don't know how many dives I did, I didn't see anything different or bigger fish. But in the far corner of the platform, things changed. There the grey mullets were big. About twenty fish, mostly kilo, but there were also fish of 1.5 kilos and some close to two kilos.
"What are we doing Zac???" I wondered. "No catching
grey mullets here, especially when they are swarming..." The fish swam calmly. I hid behind a pillar to see what was going on. Then three bluefish appeared. The biggest one must had been about 2.5 kg. All three were swimming together. As I dived to take a position, I don't know why, the smallest one got scared and ran away, dragging the other two with it. Knowing the behaviour of bluefish, I knew that I would not see them again  today. I stood on the surface in amazement and waited. The grey mullets were having fun and even some of the bigger fish were swimming under my fins. I was tempted to shoot the biggest ones, but I held myself back, saying: "We caught fish yesterday... We don't need any more grey mullets and we don't need to scare the whole school..." I stayed on the surface, when a gut felling was telling me to look back towards the deeper waters. I turned my head and froze. At the edge of the blur there was a school of either Shi drum (Umbrina cirrosa) or Tiger tooth croaker (Otolithes ruber). The sunlight was felling diagonally on them, while the fish swam on the edge of the blur and thus took on an eerie orange-brown colour. I had seen some similar pictures in some videos on the internet. Every now and then they waved their tails and flowed into this amazing wet element that was surrounding us.
"Dive as calm as possible, stay on target... let's go..." I said to myself and dived. I must have had the calmest dive of my life. The herd was quite large. I focused on the nearest fish, not knowing if there were any bigger ones. As I was approaching, the fish quietly scattered. Then I saw that there were smaller fish also. It seemed to me that the smaller ones were Shi drum, but I wasn't sure. The big fish calmly turned to avoid me. I took aim and pulled the trigger. The fight began!!! With great power the Tiger tooth croaker pulled me, but I pulled back. The fish pulled me hard 2-3 times and then squeezed into a column. I immediately dived on it and grabbed the spear from the tip and secured the fish. I emerged with the fish, but the Tiger tooth croaker refused to surrender. When I finally caught it by the gills, I heard its "voice", the koor-koor that these fish make. It was a 4.8 kg fish. (10th Picture: Now we are talking, 4.8 kg.). If I remember correctly, I had once again caught a Tiger tooth croaker in Amvrakikos Bay that was 9.980 gr. That fish didn't give me much resistance, probably because my shot would have done a lot of damage to it. This was why I was surprised by the power of the Tiger tooth croaker. Hugs, kisses, apologies and thanks to the Heavens for their completely unexpected and amazing gift. Of course I didn't fish anymore, even though I was only in the water for couple hours. I went out quietly so as not to be seen, hid, took the photos I wanted, cleaned the fish and left. (11th Picture: June fishing started VERY WELL!!!). I called Stavroula to tell her that I was returning and she wondered why so early???
With dear friends, we are going to have a great feast with the Tiger tooth croaker...

Το τελευταίο ψάρεμα του Απρίλη με λαβράκι, γοφάρι κλπ...The last fishing trip of April with sea bass, bluefish and more...

You may find this article in English at the end of the Greek version.

Title: The last fishing trip of April with sea bass, bluefish and more...

Title: The last fishing trip of April with sea bass, bluefish and more...

Video & photos : Zacharias Skevofilax.

1st day 04/29.
The last two days of April found me fishing again late in the afternoon. In the very first ambush on the muddy bottom, there was a white tube-dwelling anemone (Ceriantharia). (1st Picture: A beautiful companion!!!). A wonderful creature that burrows into the sand in case of danger. In order to videoed it, I upset it a bit by forcing tube-dwelling anemone into its shelter. A little further down while the weather seemed getting a little rougher, I saw a good grey mullet (Mugil cephalus). I waited a bit to see if something better was following it... At the last moment before I lost it, I shot it and caught a 1.4 kg fish. (2nd Picture: The 1st grey mullet of 1.4 kg...).
"Not bad..." I said and started the ambushes. I did many ambushes that I didn't see anything. In one of them I lied down on the muddy seafloor as gently as I could so as not to stirred up the mud. Above me the waves mixed with the daylight and together with the murky waters, gave the impression that I was an actor in a thriller movie!!! Enjoying this eerie landscape, I dimly perceived some shadowy figures passing-by me. I could't figure out what fish they were or their size. Then a grey mullet appeared to my right. By the time I got out from my nirvana, the grey mullet had turned and was moving away. Without wasting any more time, I pulled the trigger. The spear went through the mullet and I had another 1.3kg fish.           (3rd Picture: The 2nd grey mullet and a bit smaller of 1.3 kg...).
"Thank God...No more grey mullets Zac..." I said to myself and dived. I waited a bit to see if something would show up... I decided to change fishing spot. I got out and drove to the old and run down platform. In one of my many ambushes several sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) appeared. They were close to a kilo in weight. I waited and after a while, one of them swam out of the school and came towards me. It stoped right at the point of the speargun. (4th Picture: It almost crashed on the spear!!!). It made a sharp turn to the left and stopped again. I turned the speargun to get the video shot. Close to the point of the speargun again and just moved further to the right. It did various zig-zag moves and left to find the rest of its buddies.
"I hope to see you in a few years, little one..." I said with a smile. In another ambush I saw medium sharp-snout sea-breams.
"The fish are small Zac.." I said and continued my dive. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a bluefish (Temnodom saltator) passed under me. Without thinking too much, I pulled the trigger, confident that I would be successful and of course I missed.
"Too bad... you take it for granted..." I chanted to myself. I did enough ambushes to find the bluefish, but... On one of the last ambushes under the platform as I was sinking, there was a two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris). It seemed a bit too small and so I didn't shoot it. But underneath it there was a good sharp-snout sea-bream (Diplodus putanzzo). I aimed and hit it this time. It was a 700gr fish. (5th Picture: The 700 gr sharp-snout sea-bream...).
"Well done Zac, you managed to hit a small target (the sharp-snout sea-bream), and missed the bigger one (bluefish)" I said to myself. On one of my last ambushes, I crawled forward and as I was prepared to wait, I just managed to barely saw the silhouette of a good bass disappearing into the blur. I didn't had the time to even think about it, when another sea bass magically appeared in front of the spear. I just pulled the trigger. The bass did a somersault and landed on the bottom!!! The spear had hit it in the center and a little in front and had broken its spine. It was a two kilo fish. (6th Picture: Now we are talking !!!). Hugs, kisses, apologies and thanks to the Heavens for their unexpected gift. Of course fishing ended there. As I had reached the shore to get out, I found out that the place had many rocks.
"One last dive to see what happens and we're out..." I said to myself. When I was ready, I took a deep breath and dived. I waited on the rocks and after a while a large school of streamlined spinefoot (Siganus argenteus) appeared in the blur. The fish were very nervous of my presence and at the slightest movement they scattered. I waited incase for something else spooked them, but to no avail. But from my right I saw something different approaching me. I gently turned the speargun and waited. A grey triggerfish (Balistes capriscus) close to the kilo came up to me, turned to get a better look at me, then went off and disappeared into the absolute blur. (7th Picture: A curious and naive visitor...)
"Have a nice day, buddy and take care..." I said smiling and went out. I took the photos I wanted, cleaned the fish, and left completely satisfied once again in the arms of my very murky mistress. Morpheus quickly found me inside my sleeping bag. (8th Picture: Done for today.).
2nd day 04/30.
The next morning, the dawn found me putting on my wet suit. Everything was a bit cold. I dived and the blur was present again. It gave me the impression that the sea was more cloudy than yesterday. Many ambushes were completely barren. In the shallows the situation was dire. I went deeper into the platform, where yesterday I had missed the bluefish. On the first dives, I found grey mullets. Some fish were bigger than yesterday's...
"No more grey mullets... we decided Zac..." I said to myself as I caught myself squeezing the trigger. Luckily I didn't shoot. After a while, a bluefish passed under me. The fish seemed not to have noticed me, as it was focusing on the grey mullets. This time I aimed carefully and shot it vertically. The fight began. After few moments, I managed to catch it by the gills. It was a 2.5 kg bluefish. (9th Picture: When you aim carefully!!!). Joys, festivities etc... I wanted nothing else and decided to go out, even though I still had a lot of time at my disposal. While swimming to leave the platform, my eye caught a strange movement. It was a good common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) that was hiding. I lower the speargun's power and shot it. (10th Picture: The delicacy is caught!!!). I caught a 700gr common cuttlefish, and thanking the Creator I finished my fishing. I went out, cleaned the fish, after taking the photos I wanted and took the way back home very-very happy...(11th Picture: Done for one month..In June again...).
P.S. No more spearfishing for a month due to May's ban... Training only... It is just a month and it will pass....
