Title: In deep water with Marcus and Anna...

Title: In deep water with Marcus and Anna...
Video & photos : Zacharias Skevofilax.
Marcus and family finally arrived from Austria. Various family matters had delayed their trip, and I had been eagerly waiting for them so we could dive deeper. The weather was quite rough, so we decided to head to a long headland that would shelter us from the waves. We arrived, suited up, and dove in. The water was crystal clear, but below 12 meters, it was freezing due to a gentle underwater current. There was no sign of life around. We started making dives—searching, ambushing... A nice golden grouper (Epinephelus costae) appeared, but it headed for the depths, and we lost sight of it into the blue. At one point, I saw Marcus crawling along the seabed, approaching a large isolated rock at a depth of 18 meters. He paused briefly and pulled the trigger from a long distance away. I swam over, and he told me he had fired at a dusky grouper (Epinephelus guaza), but missed his chance. I dove down, and as I approached, I saw the dusky grouper slipping into a crevice. I surfaced and told him what had happened. We decide to head back after a while. Wherever we dove, we didn't see anything worthwhile. So, I decide to grab the short speargun and look for lionfish (Pterois volitans). There were lionfish in the familiar hole, right in the rock's shadow. I aimed at the largest one and took the shot. (1st Picture: The biggest lionfish of 1.100 gr.!!!). I hit the fish, but the spear gets wedged in the rock and won't come out. I released the reel line and surfaced. On the next dive, I freed both the spear and the fish. It was a large lionfish weighing 1,100 grams. I made two more dives and caught two more lionfish. (2nd Picture: Another big lionfish.!!!). Just as I was securing the fish to my buoy, I heard Marcus calling out to me. I quickly gathered my gear and swam toward my friend. As I approached, I realised he had speared something and was holding the speargun line taut at the surface.
"I shot the grouper from a distance, and I don't want to put tension on the line—we might lose the fish. Dive down and take a second shot at it..." he told me. Holding the short speargun, I get ready and dove. I approached the rock and saw that Markus's spear was holding the fish only by the skin of its neck; it had wedged itself loosely into the rocks. If I pulled on it, we would definitely lose it. I aimed for the head and pulled the trigger. I hit the fish exactly where I wanted, but my spear also got wedged in the rocks. On the next dive, we brought our prized trophy to the surface. (3rd Picture: Marcus's dusky grouper. The arrow points to the first shot!!!). We decided to head back. On the way, I speared two more lionfish. At a low rock slab, just as I was getting ready to dive, Marcus had beaten me to it. I waited to see what he would do, and suddenly I saw him putting down his speargun and moving underneath the slab. He reached his hand in and grabbed a nice Mediterranean slipper lobster.(Scyllarides latus). We made our way back and got out, full of joy. (4th Picture: Done for today??? no we had a visitor!!!). We took the necessary photos, but I caught sight of some movement in about 20 centimetres of water. I turned on the underwater camera and put it into the water. There was a Mediterranean moray eel (Muraena helena) that had caught the scent of the fish's blood. When I placed the camera in front of it, the moray eel attacked the camera twice. (5th Picture: Our visitor in about 20 centimetres of water !!!). When it realised it wasn't edible, it turned around and disappeared among the stones!!!
The next day, the weather calmed down a bit, and we decided to head to another deep-water spot. This time, Anna—Marcus’s wife—came along with us. We started by scouting the area to see if we could spot anything worthwhile. I dove down to an archway I knew to check for any good fish, and sure enough, there was a nice lionfish. I switched spearguns and easily caught it. (6th Picture: the 1st fish of the day...). I was busy sorting the catch when I heard Marcus calling out about a dusky grouper. I swam over to him, and he dove. He searched for the isolated rock formation but couldn't spot the fish, so he told me to approach from the other side. Sure enough, I grabbed the short speargun, dove, and checked the far side of the rock. I barely had time to do anything before I saw the fish staring right at me. I took aim and pulled the trigger. The spear skewered the fish, and I easily hauled it up. There was great excitement and celebration; the three of us gathered together to film the moment. (7th Picture: With Marcus...). The dusky grouper weighed 4 kilograms. We were continuing on to reach the spot we wanted. (8th Picture: With Anna...). We’ve been swimming for quite a while. When we arrived, I spotted two dusky groupers darting away. The larger one slipped into a crevice, and I pointed out to Marcus exactly where the fish went. Marcus dove down, got close, and took a shot. He surfaced, but his spear was empty. I swam over to him and asked about the dusky grouper.
"Forget the grouper—I took a shot at a snapper (Dentex dentex), but I missed because it was moving fast..." he explained. I dove down to check another crevice, and a large dentex suddenly darted out nearby. The fish was huge—truly massive. It looked to be about 7 or 8 kilos. I lost the sight of it, but the way it swam off left me thinking. (9th Picture: Marcus and Anna out on the open sea!!!).
"Could the fish have gone into the cave at the end of this place?" I wondered. I dove into the deeper parts of this fishing spot but saw nothing. I searched also the shallower parts, nothing. I turned back and saw Marcus diving into that same hole. He approached, reached out his arm, and took a shot. He let our line from his reel and surfaced !!!
"Did you shoot the dusky grouper?" I asked him.
"No, on a big dentex—dive!" I got ready and headed for the hole. I reached and looked inside. It was a bit murky, but I could see. The spear was nowhere to be found, and the line had gone off to the right, under the rock, about two meters deeper. I checked the adjacent hole—nothing. I surfaced.
He told me: "I dove down... and sure enough, the dentex was right there. It was a big fish, positioned vertically with its tail towards me. I took a shot as diagonally as I could manage. Given the force with which it darted off, I couldn't hold onto it..."
"If it was as big as the one I saw, there wasn't the slightest chance of holding onto it. It is a very powerful fish," I reply. Marcus was holding the line, putting pressure on the fish. It was slowly coming out. I got ready to dive as the spear began to come into view. I started my descent, only to find the spear empty. We came up empty-handed. We searched the place. We didn't see so much as a single scale from the fish. Disappointed, we headed back, hoping the fish would survive. (10th & 11th Picture: Done for today with 4 kg...).
