Title: Where there is a will, there is a way.....

Title:  Where there is a will, there is a way.....

Video & Photos: Zacharias Skevofilax

Looking at the weather changes, I decided to dive in a fishing spot with the north winds, the next day with the south winds and rain, as the weather report forecasted. So the sunny afternoon found me swimming, enjoying the sun and the tranquility of the surrounding area. I didn't see a single remarkable fish in my ambushes, not even one!!! As I made a big circle to get out, I saw a medium sized fish laying on the sandy bottom. I dived in to observe the fish, but it was changing direction as I approached it and won't let me see what kind of fish it was. I decided to shoot it, although it was a bit difficult. I dived, aimed and pulled the trigger. The spear nailed the fish in the sand. As I grabbed it, I realised it was a Common pandora (Pagellus erythrinus) !!! (1st Picture: What are you doing in the shallows???).
"What are you doing in so shallow waters???" I wondered. As I swam into the shallows to get out, I saw a hideous sight. Small fish lying dead on the seabed.
"Dynamite??? or someone fished out their nets and threw them away???" I wondered. Either way, this is human greediness. (2nd Picture: Human greediness!!!). Continuing on and just before exiting, something caught my eye. I dived in and saw a bunch of red-mouthed rock shell (Stramonita haemastoma) feasting around a dead two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris) !!! (3rd Picture: The feast!!!). I let them to enjoy their feast and walked out sadly thinking, "And then they are complaining that there are no fish around...".
The next day, early at dawn, found me diving in the same fishing spot but a few hundred meters further down. Here the bottom was more rocky but the south winds and the all night rain, had greatly reduced visibility. I started my ambushes with the medium speargun again and after a few dives, I realised I had taken the wrong speargun. Where there was a sandy bottom, I could not even see my nose. Just before I went out to get a shorter speargun, three mullets (Mugil cephalus) came towards my in the blurry waters. I did not expect anything better. I had the right position and just turned slightly the speargun and shot at the leading mullet as it turned and started swimming towards the open sea. I didn't care if the following fish were larger in size. The mullets were coming very fast and together with the murky waters, made my fishing very difficult. Unexpectedly, I caught a two-kilogram fish!!! (4th Picture: The big mullet...). I got out, went to the car and got my humble 82cm speargun.
"Now things are somehow easier..." I said to myself and dived. As I was swimming around looking for a place to hide, a nice white sea bream (Diplodus sargus) was swimming underneath and parallel to me. I aim as best as I could and pulled the trigger. The spear found the 400 gr fish on the back and I caught a fish I did not expect to catch. (5th Picture: In this case I was lucky...). A little further down in a dive and before hiding on the bottom, there was a good white sea bream. The fish was nervous but I had it wide open in front of me. Confident of my success, I pulled the trigger and of course I missed !!!
"All is caught and all is lost Zac... get serious..." I said to myself and headed on down. In one of the many ambushes, I hid behind a rock and waited. After a while, a nice mullet appeared. By the time I realised its presence, the fish had starting moving away. I quickly turned the speargun and pulled the trigger. The spear hit the fish in the middle and I hopelessly caught my third fish. (6th Picture: The 2nd mullet is caught...). But the visibility was becoming more and more difficult. So I decided to go somewhere where the weather was not so rough. I got out and drove after the cape where I dived again. Things were much better here. On the rocks of the beach I saw a bitten Streamlined spinefoot (Siganus argenteus). The fish was afflicted and had some scratches from teeth. After a while I also saw a saddled sea-bream (Oblada melanura) just as injured.
"Or barracuda (Sphyraena sphyraena) or Mediterranean morey eel (Muraena helena) ...." I thought. A little further down there was also a dead Salema porgy (Sarpa salpa) on the bottom. I dived to observe it better. It had a large gash in its side. Who knows from what???. (7th Picture: Who knows???). In my first ambush, I saw some good white sea breams, but they realised my presence and of course they never approached me. I went further and dived. I hid better and waited. In the background, some white sea breams appeared again. In fact, one of them had a mark on its back, probably from a speargun. When I started to emerge, I saw a tropical sea urchin (Diadema Setosum).
"You have arrived here also..." I wondered and pierced it with the speargun.
"Things are going to be difficult Zac..." I said to myself, but I continued my ambush. Suddenly, behind the white sea breams and in the blurry waters, a larger fish appeared. It had the silver colour of the white sea breams, but it seemed wider and bigger. Taking a closer look, I saw that it was a nice gilt-head (sea) bream (Sparus aurata). I hid even more and waited. The gilt-head (sea) bream stopped for few seconds, but after a while it continued swimming towards me. But it stood on the edge of the range of the speargun.
"It's now or never..." I said, aiming and pulling the trigger. Bewildered, the gilt-head (sea) bream did not move, giving the spear the chance to strike its target. Indeed, the spear found it behind its waist. The fish tried to leave but it was too late. (8th Picture: Finally!!!). I took this wonderful yet surprising trophy in my hands and showered it with kisses. I thanked the Heavens for their wonderful gift. I put it on my waist fishhook and continued. In the following ambushes I did not see anything big. Small mullets and two-banded sea breams were the only ones that came to see me. In one of my last ambushes, I saw something small coming towards me. I waited and found out it was a Comber-fish (Serranus cabrilla). It came so close that it almost touched the tip of the speargun. After looking at the speargun, the Comber-fish moved further to the side and looked at me. I moved slightly the speargun and the small fish made a 180 degree circle with incredible speed and disappeared into the blue. I almost choke from laughing!!! Just before I go out, on one of my last dives and while I was looking around, a sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) approached from the left and a little behind me. I couldn't do anything. If I moved even a bit, it would swim away. So I remain frozen. The sea bass swam towards me. It observed me from the side and turned to leave. As it turned to leave, I was able to move. I moved quickly the speargun towards the fish, I aimed and pulled the trigger. The spear hit the sea bass on the back and I was literally dancing full of joy. I caught another unexpected fish of 1.1 kg.              (9th Picture: Finally #2!!!). Fishing is over for today. He had given me much more than I expected. As soon as I got out, the rain started. I took a quick picture of the last two and nicest fish, got dressed. (10th Picture: Done for today...). As soon as I got into the car, it started raining cats and dogs!!! I relaxed in the car and enjoyed the delicacies of Stavroula under the monotonous song of the rain. Idyllic situations, our Greece in all its glory!!!

Κρύα και θολά αλλά το μεγάλο δεν ξέφυγε...In cold & murky waters, but the big one didn't get away....

Title: In cold & murky waters, but the big one didn't get away....

Title: In cold & murky waters, but the big one didn't get away....

Video & Photos : Zacharias Skevofilax

Three weeks after losing the big bluefish (Temnodom saltator) and my spear, I found myself in the same fishing spot to see what was going on. Basically I would be fishing there while trying to find my lost spear. But things started a bit backwards (in a good way) this time. First I went for a quick look at my favourite muddy place. After a few ambushes, a large school of striped sea bream (Lithognathus mormyrus) appeared which I ignored. Some fish were decent in size, but I had come for bigger game. Immediately after, they were followed by sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). It's the well-known school of about 10 medium-sized fish that I don't mind. I just admire their innocence. In the beginning they swam nervously around me, but as they got acquainted with my presence, they started to get very close to me. As a result, one of them passed calmly under the speargun!!! (1st Picture: It swam under the speargun!!!). I smiled while observing its demeanour and emerged. As usual I didn't see them again in the next ambushes... I moved on and reached the abandoned platform. It was here that I had lost the big bluefish. I did a few ambushes but nothing appeared. I got under the abandoned platform very calmly, but my senses were at the maximum. There I found many mullets (Mugil cephalus). Some fish were over two kilos.
"Take it easy Zac, take it easy...We didn't come here for mullets..." I said to myself. Looking around, I saw a bluefish of about 1.5 kg, but I lost it in the blur.
"Better this way because it was a bit small. Let's see if it was with a company..." I thought. While I was hidden behind a pillar, I saw of a long shadow swimming calmly among the mullets. It seemed that the fish did not realise my presence. I waited behind the pillars, I found myself behind and on top of the fish. Without loosing any precious time, I aimed as best as I could and pulled the trigger. With a violent movement of its big tale, the predator disappeared in the blur. Knowing that my shot was very good, I pulled the fish and drove it off the platform, to avoid any unpleasant troubles. A few minutes later, which seemed like ages, I caught it by the tail. With one quick movement I grabbed his head, gills and the fight was over. (2nd Picture: At last, the predator is in my arms!!!). At last, the bluefish was in my arms. It was a three kilo fish. It must have been half the weight that the one I had lost last time. Joys, celebrations, hugs, kisses, apologies and of course thanking the Heavens for Their wonderful gift. Basically the fishing expedition was over in just half an hour!!! But I had woken up at dawn, I had driven many kilometres, so I decided to continue. So I relaxed even more and continued fishing while enjoying the scenery. I didn't mind the big school of mullets. After looking for any other bluefish or sea bass, I swam for the seaweed bed. But towards the end of the platform four mullet came my way. I aimed the largest one and pulled the trigger. The spear struck its spine and immobilised the 1.6 kg mullet. (3rd Picture: The 1st mullet of the day...). I caught the 2nd fish of the day and swam for the seaweed bed without fishing this area any more. I placed the precious trophies on the buoy. I decided to look for large mullets that were swimming alone, avoiding shooting any fish that was part of a large school. So I laid down comfortably on the first bundle of seaweed I found. While I was looking around and waiting for something good to show up, I found a sea anemone (Actiniaria) to keep me company. In my frozen solitude, this simple creature filled the murky landscape with a primitive beauty. When I could n't hold my breath any more, I bid it farewell for its kindness in keeping me company and emerged. (4th Picture: A beautiful but dangerous company!!!). A little further down, in another ambush, I landed at the end of the seaweeds. I waited and after a while, 5-6 fish appeared closer to the surface. I let them pass since I was looking for a single mullet. Indeed, towards the end of my breath a good mullet appeared. Even though he was a bit far and on the move, I managed to hit the fish in the center. It was a 1.5kg fish. (5th Picture: The 2nd mullet of the day...). I had left the buoy a little a bit far so I hung the mullet on me. There were some big rocks nearby so I decided to take a dip there. After a while mullets approached me. They were about a kilo, but I was looking for something bigger. As the fish began to calm down some larger fish appeared. In fact, one of them came so close that I almost touched with the spear and I shot it.              (6th Picture: The 3rd one was 1.7 kg...). So I caught another mullet and headed out. (7th Picture: All the trophies together!!!), (8th Picture: Done for today!!!). I went to a well-known and secluded place where, after taking the necessary photos, I cleaned the fish and made my way back..
PS The bluefish accompanied by other Stavroula's delicacies, were enjoyed a few days later with special friends. Unfortunately, Pantelis and Mina were absent due to a flu infection. (9th Picture: Starting from the right: Konstadinos, Kristalia, Vaggelis, George, myself & Stavroula. Due to a flu infection, Pantelis and Mina were not present...).

Όμορφες εκπλήξεις στα ρηχά...Beautiful surprises in shallow waters...

Title: Beautiful surprises in shallow waters...

Title: Beautiful surprises in shallow waters...

Video & Photos : Zacharias Skevofilax

Early in the afternoon, I found myself at a nearby fishing spot for a calm and enjoyable swim. At least thats how I was thinking of spending this afternoon. The light souther winds were particularly pleasing me. Indeed, the waters were a bit murky. I dived in and started the ambushes. At first I didn't see anything great. I was enjoying and looking at the wonderful seabed. In one moment, while on the surface, I saw a common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) flowing through the water effortlessly. I approached it to see how big it was. The octopus found a stone and disguised itself. I got closer to it and it swelled up to look bigger.
"It's about a kilo Zac... Let's leave it..." I said to myself. I dived in to get a video shot and it took off. It went further and ducked behind a yellow sponge. I turned the camera around and dived closer to it. I got the video shot I wanted and left it alone. (1st Picture: ...it thought it hid well!!!). In the next ambush, I landed on a rock and waited. Baitfish were coming and going, when at some point mullets (Mugil cephalus) appeared from my right. The fish were high above, close to the surface and swimming towards me. One of the first fish was the largest one. I aimed and when I was ready, I pulled the trigger. The spear hit the mullet in the middle and I had caught the first fish of the day which was 1.7 kg. (2nd Picture: The 1st of the day...). But the shot, cut the rope I was arming the speargun. After arranging the mullet, I tried to fix the speargun. It was taking me a while and the southern winds had dragged me further down a bit. As I was preparing the speargun, I realised that a nice common octopus was under my fins. I tried to finish as fast as I could and not to loose the spot where the octopus had hidden. When I managed to fix the speargun, I dived and shot it. After few minutes of wrestling, the 2.5kg common octopus was in my lap. (3rd Picture: The delicacy of 2.5 kg!!!).
"We're off to a good start, Zac..." I said to myself. Continuing further down and into one of the many ambushes, I noticed that the baitfish were spooked. I hid behind a rock and waited. In an instant all the baitfish swam towards me, meaning that the predator was following them. But I didn't see anything. I crawled a little foreword but the baitfish were much more terrified, not because of my presence. As I waited, I noticed a great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) was coming towards me in the blurry waters. As soon as it saw me, the bird changed direction, swan to the surface and it disappeared. At that moment the baitfish calmed down...       (4th Picture: An unexpected winged visitor!!!). A little further down, I did another ambush on some flat rocks. As I was waiting for something to appear, a black Damselfish (Chromis chromis) jumped out of a crack. It looked at me and fearfully shoved itself into the crack. The whole incident drew my attention and as I turned my head to the left, I saw a 400 gr. striped sea bream (Lithognathus mormyrus) appearing. The fish passed in front and I caught it easily. (5th Picture: The striped sea bream...). I dived again in case there was another striped sea bream. I waited long enough when mullets appeared in the background. Slowly in the blur they came towards me. I was trying to figured out which was the biggest fish. But a careless qilt-head sea bream (Sparus aurata) was also swimming towards me. It had not released my presence, came in front of me, nibbling the seabed and I shot it. The qilt-head sea bream went crazy, but it was too late. I brought the 600 gr. qilt-head sea bream in my arms. After kissing and did the rituals, I put it in the buoy with the rest of the fish.                 (6th Picture: Wellcome!!!). In the very next ambush, I hid behind a rock. Time was passing without seeing anything. As I looked to the far right, I saw a nice mullet. I turned 90 degrees staying hidden. The fish had not realised my presence and from time to time was digging the sandy bottom while swimming towards me. The fish was so close that I could touch it. Confident of my success, I pulled the trigger and of course missed. (7th Picture: I manage to miss!!!).
"You deserve this outcome because you were so sure of the success and didn't aim as you should..." I said to myself. As I was arming the speargun, I noticed a strange fish getting under some rocks. It came out from the other side of the rock, looked at me and under the rock again. I could not tell what fish it was, and that made me even more curious. I armed on the speargun to the lowest power and dived. As soon as I saw it, I shot it. The fish fell trembling to the seafloor, free from the rod. I caught it and realised that it was a big bogue (Boops boops). The spear had hit it in the head. Being a slim fish, it was not possible to stay on the spear. (8th Picture: Now this is a surprise!!!).
"What the bogue was doing here and why it was hiding???" I wondered. "Is it possible???" I dived in and waited. I saw striped sea breams in the distance, scratched the rock and waited. Instead of the striped sea breams, I saw two small amberjacks (Seriola dumerili). They did a few turns but stayed away. No matter what tricks I did, they stayed away zigzagging and finally disappeared. The sun was starting to set down meaning I didn't have much more time. I did another dive and waited. Striped sea breams and black Damselfish appeared. All the black Damselfish came towards me, a sign that the predators were following them. Indeed, two small amberjacks appeared again, but were lost in the blur. As if they knew I wasn't going to shoot them, the whole school of striped sea breams appeared in front of me.
"If you dare pull the trigger..." I said to myself smiling. "One more dive..." I said and dived. I ducked in as much as I could and waited. Almost immediately a small amberjack appeared. As it turned, I realised that it was not alone. A total of seven fish appeared in-front of me. I could not shoot the biggest one, so I shot the closest one. The amberjack started swimming like crazy, while I was trying to manage the fishing rope not to get tangled on any stones. After a short battle, I took it in my arms, kisses, apologies and of course thanking the Heavens for Their wonderful gifts. At a depth of only -4.3 m and in 25 seconds I shot the fish!!! (9th Picture: When the Heavens want to provide!!!). That was where my fishing expedition ended, or I thought so. Going out to the beach, I was close to a very good point and decided to do one last ambush. I dived and crawled into the crevice. I waited to see and then crawled again. In a moment, I became aware of a large shadow in the very shallows, as small fish run in panic. It was a big bluefish (Temnodom saltator). It swam over the rock I was hiding. I immediately emerged, but the fish did not accept my presence and disappeared into the blur!!! (10th Picture: When the Heavens do not want to provide!!!).
"It does not matter, at least I saw it..." I thought...and got out...

In cold & murky waters, but the big one escaped....

Title: In cold & murky waters, but the big one escaped....

Title: In cold & murky waters, but the big one escaped....

Video & Photos : Zacharias Skevofilax

The weather was cloudy. The rains of the previous days had greatly affected the visibility. But I loved it. I would fish a rocky spot and then go to the mud. This is what I call a very dear place of mine, which is always blurry. So I took the 100cm speargun and dived into oblivion. I dived and swam across a wide stretch of sand. But there was something that didn't match the surroundings, even though it was the same shade with the sandy seabed. Looking closer, I noticed a small common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) had came out early morning to find something to munch on. It was playing dead, until I approached it. Then puffed up to make itself looking bigger and when it realised the trick didn't work, it took off and I lost it. (1st Picture: Looking something to munch on!!!). I smiled, continued and reached the rocks. The ripple was gentle and didn't cause me much trouble. In the very first ambush and while I was crawling behind some rocks, among others, a school of goatfish (Mullus surmuletus) came to see me. They stayed on the seabed for a while, but a startled small fish scared them and swam away, although they reluctantly appeared again at the end of the dive.            (2nd Picture: The school of goatfish...). The sun had risen and through the patches of clouds, was passing through and occasionally warming the frosty dawn. In one of my innumerable ambushes, I landed next to a rock. I crawled forward and on the corner there was a large school of salema porgy (Sarpa salpa) and streamlined spinefoot (Siganus argenteus). The fish got scared and slowly started to leave. I waited a bit so it didn't spook if something was following them. When I realised that nothing was following them, I turned to see what was going on behind the rock. As I looked, I saw a good in size white sea bream (Diplodus sargus). As it started to swim away, I pulled the trigger. The spear fell behind another rock and I was not able to see what I had accomplished. I pulled the spear close to me, seeing that was without the fish.
"What happened here???" I wondered..."After all, I managed to hit the white sea bream!!!" I was thinking. Looking closer, I saw the white sea bream lying on its back on the grassy bottom. I caught it and found out that the spear had cracked its skull. It was a half-kilo fish. I happily embraced it and place it on the buoy. (3rd Picture: The big white sea bream !!!). The closer I got to the cape and the muddy place, the waters became murkier. So I decided to go out and get a shorter speargun. As I turned around, I realised that a good white sea bream had come up to the surface to check me out!!! I turned the speargun, but the white sea bream calmly deepened. I dived behind it as quietly as I could and as soon as it turned a little to see me, I shot it. The spear hit it in the center and I caught my second fish of the day which was 400gr. and went out. (4th Picture: The second white sea bream...). I drove the car, brought it closer to the cape, took a shorter speargun and dived. Things were very difficult here. The blur was indescribable!!! I could barely see about a meter. But in the third ambush, I saw that a nice figure had come to see me. I realised that it was a nice sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). It approached me suspiciously and at a very slow speed. It made the mistake (due to the blur) of approaching me too close and slowly. I had all the time I needed to aim and shoot it and so it happened. So I caught a nice sea bass of 1,700 gr. Delighted, I put it on my buoy and continued. (5th Picture: The beautiful sea bass...). In another ambush I was surrounded by medium size sea bass. I didn't bother them, while I was looking for something bigger. In fact, one of them came so close that it almost touched the spear. I smiled. I never saw them again. I swam further away and reached a point where there was a sunken wall. In the past, I had seen and caught some nice fish here.
"Let's try and see..." I said to myself. I hid behind the wall and waited. After a while mullets (Mugil cephalus) came. I waited to see if a predator was following them, but in vain. Another one passed. It seemed a bit small. Then an even bigger one, but behind it appeared an even bigger one. I aimed and pulled the trigger. The mullet left for the depths with incredible speed. The unfortunate being did what it could, but in vain. After a while it was in my arms. It was a two kilos fish!!! (6th Picture: The big mullet...). Another great gift. I arranged it together with the sea bass and went a little further down.
"Let's not catch any more mullets today Zac..." I said to myself. As if they heard my thoughts, a very large school of mullets passed in front of me. Some fish were about two and a half kilos!!!
"No more mullets..." I reminded myself as my finger unconsciously started pressing the trigger. (7th Picture: The lucky one...). I didn't shoot them and just admired how easily and quickly they traveled through the water. While I was looking at the fish, I saw a very long shadow in the middle of the school!!!
"Ether it is big sea bass or big bluefish (Temnodom saltator)!!! The target was very big. If I dive it might get scared and swim away...." I managed to think. I aimed as best as I could from the surface and pulled the trigger. The spear hit the big predator, who with a flick of its tail disappeared into the blur. I pulled the rope to I fight the fish, but I felt no resistance. The could not reel-in the rope but it didn't jerk. I dived into the blur following the rope and found it tangled on a rock. I untangled it and emerged. The line was cut as if by a sharp blade!!! (8th Picture: Yet it managed to cut the line!!!). Of course the spear was also lost. I dived several times to find the spear, but in vain. So ended my fishing somewhat ingloriously but on the other hand the dive was wonderful...
