Title: Agrotic Easter in Karpathos island...... and more....

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax.

For another Easter holidays, I found myself on my favourite island of Karpathos. Weather was the expected one. 7 Beaufort NNW strong winds. The island had many rainfalls so far, resulting in lots of water reserves for the summer. However, due to the rains, the farmer-engineer John, could not cultivate his garden. So, by the time I arrived, my father was preparing to plant his tomatoes. First he had put a rope to straiten his space, he opened his ditches (1st picture). He took the rake and flattened the depth of the ditch, so the water would run evenly along the length of the ditch (2nd). Then he took a pole, which had a length of about 80 cm, to have equal distances between the plants and opened the pits for the plants (3rd). Then put in each pit and a cup of goat manure (4th), we placed wooden boards so that we can walk (5th), without dirtying our shoes from the soil, but also to know where to step in order not to damage to the plants. Then he mixed the manure with the soil and chose the best plants that had grown them in his small seedbed (6th) and affectionately put his new plants in each pit (7th). Finally we watered and fixed anything needed to be fixed in the ditch, so all the new "children" of farmer-engineer John to be watered equally (8th). All this time I did not hear anything. The absolute calmness. The wind had stopped and I was enjoying the ultimate peace. From time to time some singing bird was disrupting my nirvana. Naturally, all of this was done under the watchful eye of farmer-engineer John's inspectors. Wherever we went or did the inspectors where present. Who are these inspectors? his cats. (9th) They have been watching us close enough to investigate the area with whatever farmer-engineer John and I were fixing.
As a result of the many rain-falls, was Karpathos to be filled with wild-blossoms.
(10th picture: Magic of colours and flowers ).
But the Carpathian Sea had a nice surprise for me. The following morning the sea was literally stuck. It was motionless. There was no way could leave such an opportunity to get lost. Knowing that the weather could change at any moment, I decided to go for a deep dive, hoping for some nice dusky groupers..
(11th picture: The Karpathian Sea motionless....) I reached the designated area that I wanted to dive, got dressed and dove. I was trying to warm up my lungs and so I search some rock, when in a slit I found a corvina (Sciaena umbra). I searched for something bigger, but unfortunately for the fish, I did not found anything else and I caught it. I swam even deeper. In the -22 meter zone, there were nice large rocks that in the past I had caught some big fish. The first rock was empty, But I noticed a movement a little bit above my head. A large lionfish (Pterois volitans) was swimming trying to enter in a slit. I aimed and got it. It was one of the biggest I had ever caught. (580 gr). A little further away in another rock I saw a small dusky grouper (Epinephelus guaza) about a kilo. I ignored it and searched for something bigger. But four other unpleasant surprises waited for me. Four lionfish. I caught all four of them and the biggest one was 620 gr.
(12th picture: The biggest lion fish....) I found three more small dusky groupers, which I did not bother and continued my fishing. While the surface of the sea was 17 ° C, when I was passing below 10 meters, the sea temperature reminded me of winter conditions and nothing was swimming around. The water was quite cold and above the sea bottom it was cloudy too. Probably this was the reason why many fish were not present. In any case, the heavy rains that had fallen on the island had played a decisive role. Disappointed I swam for the shallows. I got in my car, drove for few kilometres and reached a shallow fishing ground. I changed gear, got loaded with he many weights and got ready for shallow ambushes. But I ran into an unpleasant surprise too. The beach that I dove was full of jellyfish, laying at the bottom of the sea as if they were dead. From time to time I saw some jellyfish swimming, but they were full of small fishes. These tiny creatures, which were almost transparent, were looking for a hideout among the dangerous tentacles of the jellyfish.
(13th picture: The jellyfish and its company...).
It was a very interesting spectacle. Life looked for shelter between the poisonous and long tentacles of an eerie creature. A little further, a movement caught my attention. Something was hiding in the sand. I approached and saw a small spotted weever (Trachinus araneus) being almost invisible. If I had not seen its movement, I would certainly not have found it. I used my speargun as a leverage to lift it out of the sand so I could video the naughty fish. The small greater weever jumped out and lifted its dorsal fins. It showed me the first three thorns, which were black in colour and they are poisonous and got under the sand again. I took the video shots that I wanted, and I started my shallow ambushes. Because the waters were so clear, the fish did not approach me easily. With lots of efforts, I managed to catch my first half-kilo  white sea bream (Diplodus sargus) (14th picture: Finally....)
But things were not going well at all. On another ambush, I was hidden behind a rock. Several parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense) came close but not the biggest one I wanted. There was also a small mottled grouper (Mycteroperca ruby) in their company. At the end of the ambush, another mottled grouper appeared also. I smiled with their naivety and emerged without pulling the trigger. In another ambush, a kilo sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and two more smaller ones approached me. I left them unharmed too. But the time was passing, and nothing was being accomplished..... The fish stayed far away from me, no matter what tricks and I was implementing. I noticed some good size white sea bream swimming between the stones in very shallow waters. I changed my fishing strategy and swam for the very shallow. In so shallow waters, I had never fished in my life so far !!! I was observing the fish hiding behind the stones in the very shallow waters, I was approaching and if I had the slightest chance, I pulled the trigger. Some times I was successful, some others not. We are talking about the unimaginable depth of 30-50 cm of water!!!
(15th picture: The unimaginable depth!!!). I was literally crawling on the stones. I was crawling, not swim. In one case, the water was so shallow that I had to turn my head to the side, so I could see with one eye underwater, while the other was out of the water. The hardest thing to do was reloading the speargun every time I pulled the trigger. I was looking to find a slightly deeper water puddle so I could reload it.
(16th picture: The next one...). In my last attempt, I saw two large white sea breams hiding behind a rock. Pulling myself over the stones, I approached them. One of the white sea breams took off, and I focused on finding the second one. When I looked behind the rock, the white sea bream was not there.
"Where did it go and I did see it leaving ..." I wondered. But a small movement behind the next rock had betrayed it. The fish was hiding behind the next rock to avoid me, but I could see its tail shaking. I crawled to my left, in order to have greater target, shot it and caught one of the bigger ones, close to a kilo (890 g). I managed and catch six more white sea breams using this method.
(17th picture: One more...)
"Enough ...." I said to myself, and I swam towards a bit deeper waters, searching for new trophies. Most of the time I was encircled by medium size parrotfish, which I did not want to catch. After several dives, I began to realise that the big parrotfish were either staying away or hiding under rocks and were looking at me. With distant shots I managed to catch four of 700 to 950 grams. In one of my ambushes and while I expected to see a white sea bream, a large parrotfish was swimming back and forth over a flat rock. I continued looking to see what it would do, while looking for another trophy. The parrotfish got under the rock and looked at me. Hidden in the shadow of the rock, I was not able to see the fish. However its white teeth, betrayed it. I aimed as the best as I could and pulled the trigger. The spear went off with incredible speed towards its goal. I did not know what I had accomplished, but the spear was violently shaken under the rock. I rushed and carefully pulled out of the rock the big parrotfish. It was the largest one and weighed 1,080 gr !!!
(18th picture: The biggest parrotfish of the day!!!).
At that moment I decided to go out. On the way back, I captured two
Mediterranean slipper lobster (Scyllarides latus). A great delicacy for tomorrow's spaghetti....
(19th picture: The biggest of the two delicacies...)
Shortly before I finished fishing, there was a good slit that I knew. In this slit, I would have only one chance to catch a fish, because if the fish managed to turn in the depth of the slit, I would not see them again. I approached the slit as calmly as possible and dove. There was nothing in the vestibule, but a little deeper a white big sae bream turned around to disappeared, but my spear was faster than the fish. It was a fish of 800 gr. (20th picture: The last one...)
Full of joy, I got out of the water. It was a great fishing expedition considering the depth I'd been fishing for. I did 72 dives in five and a half hours. All that was missing was a big dusky grouper for the expedition to be perfect.....
(21st picture: Done for today....)

P.S. The fish was cleaned as usual by the farmer-engineer & fish-cleaner John, I was impressed by how fat all the lionfish were. They had plenty of fat in their bellies, all of them. They ate well during winter time !!!

But the weather continued to be perfect. But lets put the things in order. On Holy Thursday early in the morning, the goat was brought to us in order to prepare it for the Easter celebration. This time the farmer-butcher John took over. I was for the secondary jobs.
(22nd & 23rd picture: Preparation of Easter celebration).
Besides, it is said in Greece: "In the presence of the Chief, other authorities do not exist ...". The goat was cut under the instructions of Master Chef Mom and the preparation of the Easter celebration had  began. I grabbed the opportunity and took off. I was planning to dive in one of the best place I knew and then to the shallows if I did not find anything big. I wanted to examine if the icy phenomenon in the deep was also in other parts of the island. I prepared my gearing equipment and drove where I wanted to spearfishing full of curiosity. I made some shallow dives to warm up my lungs and I swam towards the deep fishing ground. The scenery here was the same, unfortunately. The surface just fine, but the bottom was very cold. I searched all my known rocks but I did not find anything big. I continued my search for about one hour and as I was emerging from one of the many dives, I saw a familiar shape on the sea bed (about -22 meters). It was a 3 kilo dusky grouper. Unfortunately for the fish, it did not managed to hide soon enough and I saw it. I emerged and swam calmly to where I had seen the fish disappearing. I relaxed on the surface for several minutes and when I was ready, I took a deep breath and dove. As I approached the seabed, I saw its tale between two stones, sitting on the sand. As I approached even closer, the dusky grouper slid between the two stones and turned to look at me in a clearing, while hidden in the shadow of the rock. I was close enough so I did not lose it from my eyesight. As it turned to look at me, I aimed at its head and pulled the trigger. The spear was shaken violently, I continued my descent, grabbing the dusky grouper from its mouth. I pulled the fish out of the rock and swam towards the surface. The spear had stroke it in the mouth and had come out of its side fins. I put it on my buoy, I made two more deep dives and got out. (24th Picture: Finally the dusky grouper was caught...) As I approach the coast, I saw a nice mullet hiding beneath a long rock. I searched it, but in vain. "Where is the fish?" I wondered. A small White Sea bream entered a near-by rock, that I had not notice it. I swam towards it right away, and as I approach the rock, I saw the mullet taking off from the other side of the rock. I turn the speargun and before I lost the fish, I pulled the trigger. The spear stoke the mullet on its back and it too late for the mullet even though it fought to get free. When I brought the mullet into my hands, I realised I had not activated my underwater camera. I caught a nice fish, but I lost a very nice video. .........
I had approached a known cave that sometimes I had caught some nice dusky groupers. I dove and I turn on the flashlight, but nothing was there. As I looked towards the centre of the cave, I saw a monster approaching me. It was a big Mediterranean moray eel. (Muraena helena). It was attracted by the light of my flashlight. It landed on the sea floor, looking like a cobra observing me. I aimed and shut it on the head and I caught a three kilo fish (2.86 kg). I put it with the rest of the fish and swam towards the shallows. I managed to catch two salema porgy (Sarpa salpa)  and three parrot fish. (25th Picture: Just before the shot....) But I was looking for white sea breams. Behind a stone I found one but I missed it. While I was trying to reload my speargun, there was a white sea bream in front of me in a dent of the sea floor. I knew that it would not stay long there. I armed as fast as I could my speargun, without arranging the ropes and pulled the trigger. I caught a fish near a kilo. As I was swimming, another white sea bream was laying down on the sand and making a variation. I did not have any other choice but to shoot it vertically. I got another good size white sea bream. I decided to go out, while fishing on the way out. So in a well-known slit, I got a big Mediterranean slipper lobster close to a kilo. (26th Picture: The Mediterranean slipper lobster...) Shortly before I got out, I saw a small Mediterranean moray eel, hading its head in a hole. It was trying to catch something hidden in that hole...... I played with it and left. But as I was getting out, there were jellyfish that were embraced. For the first time in my life I saw this behaviour of jellyfish. I did not know if they were reproducing or eating one another ....
(27th Picture: Karpathos... the end....)

My trip in Karpathos had ended.......... for now!!!

Title: Scotland...An unexpected journey...
You may find this article in English at the end of the Greek version.

Το V&A and Discovery.

Title: Scotland...An unexpected journey...

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax, Sophia Skevofylaka, Gosia Kubalczyk & Federica Chiti.

Due to unexpected situations, the Easter-fishing articles in the island of Karpathos will be posted later on ....
The appointment was set several weeks ago. As soon as it was known when dinner would take place, the preparations began. The plan was that Stavroula and I, as official guests, to be present at the dinner that would be provided by the president of Dundee Student Association, which was Sofia Skevofylaka, my daughter.

But the upcoming elections in Greece changed our plans. One month before the election, all civil servants' vacation time off were suspended, as is the case in every election in Greece, so Stavroula stayed behind. Unfortunately I had to travel alone. So the second invitation for the dinner, was used by the mother of Sophia. After a four-hour flight, I arrived late at night in Edinburgh and Sofia picked me up and ended up in Dundee.
(1st picture: Hallo Scotland...)
The next morning, everybody was busy preparing things, until everything was ready. I met a lot of people, since they wanted to meet the president's dad. Eventually the great moment had come and we all gathered in a beautiful decorated hall. There, the glamorous president welcomed us and we sat in our seats and the dinner was served. Approximately 110 VIP of Dundee University were invited, either because of positions they were holding at the university or due to their achievements during this academic year.
When we had finished with our dinner, the main event of the evening started. Sophia stood up and started her speech. (The morning of the same day, I had read her entire speech, at least I thought so, but this little rascal had hidden some parts of her speech.)
So she started, as I expected to start, thanking one-by-one her associates. She talked about what they had accomplished all together, highlighting the group effort of everyone, and changed her speech thanking to her father, mother and Stavroula ... I was speechless and moved. As she continued her speech, I noticed myself very proud, moved sitting in the shadow that the president, my daughter was casting. She finished her speech and all the attendants stood-up applauding her... Then the general secretary of the University of Dundee Dr. Jim McGeorge spoke, praising the president and her staff, saying such successes have not been achieved in the past (1st in Scotland in student experience (in four different areas) as well as 2nd, 4th, 7th and 10th in Great Britain), Closing his speech, Dr. Jim McGeorge announced the latest results of an international survey among 189 universities at the International Student Barometer, that in clubs and athletic clubs Dundee managed and came out first in the world !!!

Then it was the turn of the vice-presidents to address their speeches. One by one, the vice-presidents spoke and each of them awarded the best students, administrators and clubs in the area of their expertise.. At the end, they called on Sofia and they all became one big hug, showing in fact that they were really a well-efficient working strong team. They gave her a lovely bouquet and a gift. Then Sophia called us all to go to the specially decorated corridor where there was a surprise video for the whole team. This video provided the needed time to clean up the hall where the party would take place. When the video was ended, it was time for pictures. Then it was time for parting and dancing. It was already too late for me or rather I could say too early in the next morning. I said goodbye to everyone and let the younger generation to have fun.

The next afternoon we went for a walk in Dundee along the river to see the sights. We went to Dundee's V&A, where near by was the sailboat Discovery. Both are among the most beautiful sights of the city. (4th picture: Dundee's V&A and the Discovery). Then we walked in to the McManus Museum. It was though as you were making a journey through time and culture. From the prehistoric people of the region to the present day. Another place that a visitor of Dundee should not miss. (5th picture: The McManus Museum ). Finally we ended up watching the movie End Game, Avengers of Marvel ....
(6th picture: A panoramic view of Dundee....)
But as you know my blog is not about social connections, no matter how great or important they are. Besides, this is also said by its title: "Apnea spearfinig with..." So it was not possible not to mention the element of water or the sea in general in this description. The next morning we took the train, Sofia, Gosia and I for North Queensferry.
(7th picture: The Scottish meadows' not necessarily green...) We passed the green and colourful Scottish meadows and in less than an hour we arrived where we wanted, at Deep Sea World. It is an aquarium that has various kinds of fish, seals, snakes etc. The biggest attraction is the main tank where a glass tunnel passes under it, allowing the visitor to see the fish swimming above and next to you. Inside the main tank there were a lot of sea bass. (Dicentrarchus labrax), some fish were about 10 kilos without exaggeration, gilt-head (sea) bream (Sparus aurata), various kinds of sting rays, mullets. (Mugil cephalus), mackerel (Scomber scombrus) and of course sharks. There were small spotted catsharks (Scyliorhinus canicula) (with the well-known spots on their skin) and seven big sand tiger sharks ( Carcharias taurus). They were the main attraction. We went to meet the personnel of the aquarium and after a brief conversation we were ready. You would probably ask for what ??? To scuba dive in the main tank, what else!!!
Our trainer was called Maciek. He calmly explained everything to us in detail. Then we approached the pool where we would put on our uniforms. Together with me and Sophia there was a Scotsman named Andy. We shook hands and started to get dressed. But a small spotted catshark visited us. Maciek told us that we could pet it and the small shark seamed that it did not like and swam away. Then returned immediately for more. This happened 3-4 times before it despaired in the main tank !!! We dressed up with dry suits. I missed my elastic underwater suits in Greece. This dry suit was very tough, not elastic as I used to and I felt like an astronaut. We also wore scuba tanks, had a quick lesson with Maciek and did all the necessary exercises in order to have a safe dive. We went to the diving platform and Maciek asked a volunteer to dive first. Of course I went, then Sophia and finally Andy. The last member of this team was another trainer called Kate. Maciek had warned us that when we were reaching the bottom, the big sharks would be gathering around us because they would think we were going to feed them. So it happened. The moment I dove, Maciek told me to wait for the others and I activated my underwater camera. Two sand tiger sharks, about two metres long each approached us and they left swimming calmly. Looking left and right to get some good video shots, I noticed on my left and several meters away a great shadow approaching slowly. At the same time Sophia had submerged next to me, pointed at me to look up. At that moment, another great sand tiger shark was passing. I video its passing and turned to my left to see the approaching shadow. But instead of the shadow, the presence of a very big fish was clearly visible. It was the biggest sand tiger shark called TinkerBell (from the fairy tale with Peter Pan). TinkerBell is about 3.2 meters long and weighs about 200 kilos. (8th picture: TinkerBell & me...) She came closer, but unfortunately she turned away far enough. I turned to see how Sophia was doing, and another sand tiger shark was passing by beside us. Not even three minutes had passed and all the big sand tiger sharks had come close enough to welcome us. Sting-rays were swimming around us, mullets were staring at us, but the sea basses were staying far away. The small spotted catsharks were passing by very close and many times between our legs. Several visitors were looking at us through the glass tunnel astonished. I'm pretty sure most of them though we were crazy. All of these were happening under the watchful eyes of Maciek and Kate. They were asking us if everything was OK using the diver's sign language and were looking at the air levels in each of our scuba tanks quite often. The sand tiger sharks were passing, and I turned to see how Sofia was doing.
(9th picture: All together, From right to left: Maciek, myself, Sophia, Kate & Andy).
Sophia was sending me hearts joining her hands. All right, then. When I was concentrating on a shark and did not see the others until they had passed by us. I was ecstatic by the greatness of these beautiful creatures. It was the first time I had ever seen sharks so close, while I was swimming.  Once I've seen a shark in a fishing expedition and after it made a circle below but much deeper than us, it disappeared, I could barely see its figure, as it circled us.
Maciek signalled us to move forward. As we were moving on the bottom, among the other fish, there were three sand tiger sharks on our right and two others in front of us. Another sand tiger shark decided to pass between me and Maciek, maybe looking for some snack ??? Its behaviour seemed different to what I had experienced so far. We moved away from each other, leaving space for its greatness, to pass. It swam making a circle and then moved away. (10th picture: It wanted to pass... between us !!!). We had reached halfway through our wonderful journey and Maciek jumped some rocks, in order to return back on the other side of the aquarium, as he had told us earlier, during our training. He signalled to me to wait, since another sand tiger shark was coming, followed by a sting ray. Then we were waiting to see what another shark was going to do that was behind Maciek. As soon as it changed its direction, I passed over the rocks, but Sophia, Andy and Kate had to wait for one of the largest sand tiger sharks appeared, showing all its greatness. As soon as it passed, the rest of the team passed over the rocks, but again we had to wait for another big sand tiger shark appeared, followed by a larger one.
"They came to say goodbye to us ..." I thought and walked to the rope from where we had started our dive, twenty minutes ago. All this happened under the watchful eye of Kirsty (another trainer) and our impeccable photographer Gosia, (who took the wonderful pictures that you see). (11th picture: Our photographer Gosia with Sophia and far behind...)
I emerged, got on the platform and I took off my mask, when Kate asked. "How was the dive?" "Amazing experience, lets go for another round?" I said to her swilling. As I turned to see what the rest of the team was doing, two sand tiger sharks were swimming above the other divers. I activated my underwater camera, put my hand in the water and tried to video the sharks' passing, as best I could. After a while, Sofia, Andy and Maciek got also on the platform. We had experienced an incredible life experience, thanks to the excellent and professional training of Deep Sea World staff. and especially Maciek and Kate. We also thanked Kirsty and Chris who were also impeccable in their duties. At the end, along with the confirmation for the scuba diving, the trainers gave us, as a gift, a sand tiger shark's tooth, to each one of us. (12th picture: The gift: Small but very precious!!!)
The unexpected trip to Dundee had ended. One of the things that Sophia and I have to do in this life, has been erased from our list. Next one is: the diving with the wonderful great white shark !!! (13th picture: Athens from up above, as I returned home!!!)

Title: A spearfishing trip full of surprises...

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax.

1st picture: (At last the sunrise.... time for fishing )

After a long and stressful time, my family's medical problems had ended (Thank God). I decided to go for a long- fishing trip on a Saturday, to relax. So I loaded my gears into the car and early at dawn, I hit the road towards the Saronic Gulf. The first two fishing places I wanted to start my dives, were already occupied by other fishermen. I drove further away to another place and got dressed as fast as I could. Just as I entered the sea, two fishermen appeared. I dove immediately with craving and started fishing. By the time they would get dressed, I would be far enough to fish alone this vast fishing ground. The sea was blurry as I was expecting it to be. Yesterday's southern winds were responsible for the blurry wasters. I made some quick dives to worm-up my lungs and started my fishing. I just wanted to swim, to calm down and relaxed myself. I did not really care if I was going to catch some fish. The main thing was that I was diving ... I had not swim more that twenty meters and I find a dead two-banded sea-bream (Diplodus sargus) that looked fresh. Looking closer I saw that the poor creature was caught on a fishing line. I did not know how it managed to cut the line off, but it seemed its struggle probably costed its life. I looked and saw a fisherman on the beach with fishing rods. I took the small fish and gave it to him. It was his broken fishing line. He thanked me and I continued my course. In my first serious ambush, after a minute and a few seconds, a mullet (Mugil cephalus) swam by me. The fish was alone, so I did not wonder if it was followed by something bigger and so I shot it. The mullet tried to get rid of the spear by getting under a rock, but I did not let it to do so and I caught my first fish which was about a kilo. After I put it on my fish-hanger, I continued my ambushes. In one of them, two mullets passed over me. By the time I realised their presence, the fish were out of my reach. Turning my head to the direction where the two fish came, I saw that a school of fish was following them. The first two mullets seemed to be the precursors of the school. I maintained my position hidden on the sea floor, while the entire school of the mullets was out of the range of my speargun. At that moment, one mullet made its final mistake and came closer towards me. I did not expect anything more and I pressed the trigger, catching my second mullet, which was a bit bigger than the first one.
"So far so good, Zac..." I said to myself smiling. My ambushes continued, and I was enjoying the tranquility and absolute serenity of the seabed. Everything was so quiet and calm. Only the murmur of the sea I could hear. as if it was complaining to me that I forgot it for some time. (Another excuse for more diving....). I had reached the cape and in my first very long ambush, a middle size white sea-bream (Diplodus sargus) approaching me reluctantly. I did not see anything else so I focused on it. The fish approached me by making the known zigzags, as white sea-breams do when they are nervous. As it turned and I had a somewhat better target, I press the trigger, even though it was quite far away. I caught a medium white sea-bream of 370 gr.
"Well done ..." I said and swam to pass the cape. But another spear-fisherman was swimming towards me, from the other side of the cape. I turned and got out. There was no reason to fish the part of the fishing ground that already had been fished by three other divers. I returned to my car and drove to a nearby small bay. Luckily there was no one else there. I dove and started my ambushes. In one of them, and while only half a minute has passed, a sea-bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) swam over me. It looked at me and as it turned to leave, I shot it and I caught the first sea-bass of the day. It was a 1.3 kg fish.
(2nd picture: The first sea-bass!!!)
Full of joy, I collected my precious trophy and continue fishing. But the fishing ground ended without seeing anything else. I got out and drove to the next. This was a little bigger bay and at the far end, there was a fishing buoy. I dove immediately and started my ambushes before the other spear-fisherman approached me. In one of my ambushes, I had been hiding very well between some broken rocks. Only twenty seconds had passed, when I saw a silver shadow approaching me in the blurry waters. From its movements, I realised that it was a sea-bass. The fish was swimming to my right, but as soon as it realised my presence, it turned and came over me. I aimed at its face and pulled the trigger. It managed to turn, but the spear hit it on its side fins. I caught a fish of 1.2 kilos and continued fishing joyfully.
(3rd picture: The second sea-bass ). After few more ambushes, I had approached the other spear-fisherman and it was time to leave this place as well. There was no reason to fish the place that he had fished, because I was sure that the few large fishes of this place would be terrified and gone. Once again in the car. But wherever I went, there were other fishermen. But a near-by rocky bay there were no one else ....
"Either someone had fished already this small place.... or I'm lucky ,,,, " I thought and dove. I did not expect great things, but on the other hand, I did not have any other choice. After few ambushes I had reached the end of the rocky bottom, that was at -8 meters. This was a marginal depth for me, since I was wearing too many kilos (18 kilos for the shallow ambushes). I rested enough on the surface of the sea and dove. After a while, some good size white sea-breams appeared far away. I crawled on the bottom towards the fish, when I realised that I had not activated my underwater camera. I activated it and waited for the fish. Among the white sea-breams, there was a larger and wider silver figure. It is a beautiful gilt-head sea-bream (Sparus aurata) which attracted my attention, ignoring the white sea-bream, even though some of them were much closer to me. The gilt-head sea-bream was approaching me suspiciously while entering my firing range. I waited for the fish to turn, in order to have a much larger target and pulled the trigger. It was a shot of a marginal distance. The gilt-head sea-bream managed to turn in order to escape from the spear, but it was too late. The spear stroke the fish and passed through its body, like a kebab, preventing the fish to swim. Excited I dove over the fish and brought it to the surface. It is a beautiful gilt-head sea-bream of 880 gr. (4th picture: It's a beauty...) My fishing expedition had gone unexpectedly well. It was time to get out. To make my life easier, I decide to get out from a small sandy beach, instead of walking on the rocks. But the Universe had other plans in its mind. As I was swimming to the beach without wanting to fish any more, my eyes caught a familiar silhouette on the sandy bottom. A beautiful anglerfish (Lophius piscatorius) disguised, was ambushing, looking for prey. Easy target. The difficult thing is to realise its presence. I had caught once more, two years ago. This one seemed to be a bit bigger. I aimed over its eye and caught a two kilos anglerfish. (5th picture: If you are lucky....). Not even in my wild dreams, I did not expect to catch so many fish in the over-fished Saronic bay. I changed and took some quick pictures and I was gone. I found a place that did not have people and I cleaned the fish. The angler-fish had swallowed a salema porgy (Sarpa salpa) about 250g. It was folded, otherwise it would not fit in the anglerfish's stomach !!!
(6th picture: All the fishes together !!!) (7th picture: It had a great appetite...)
But something inside was telling me to dive in a nearby fishing area, that I had not fished it for a long time. So, the next morning, early at Sunday's dawn under heavy rain, I found myself trying to convince me for a quick morning dive. Finally I drag myself out of the bed and by sunrise I was diving. During the first ambushes, I saw only small fish. After a while, a school of mullets approached my ambush. Some of the fish were pretty big in size. One of the bigger ones swam close by me. I lifted the speargun, aiming the mullet, but I did not pull the trigger. I had caught enough fish yesterday. Today I was looking for something bigger. I lowered the speargun, letting the fish to pass and I continued my ambush. After few more seconds, while I was looking to my left, as I turned my head to the right, I saw a big sea bass beside me. The fish had come from my right side, while I was looking to my left, so I did not realised its presence sooner. It swam slowly in front of me and at the right moment I just pulled the trigger. The spear stroke the big hunter on its neck. The shot was so close, that the whole spear had passed through the fish. The sea bass attempted to escape by dragging along the spear without success, and as I reeled in the rope, it sat down on the sea floor exhausted. (8th picture: Just before the end...) I embraced it, kissed it many times and thanked the Heavens for their wonderful gift, I went out almost walking on the sea !!! This was probably the last sea-bass fishing for this season.
(9th picture: The end...) (10th picture: !!!)
The sea-bass weighted 3.34 kilos...

P.S. It was a fishing expedition full of surprises. Life has its ups and downs. As the song says: "Everything happens for a reason...."

Rest in peace dear Mr. Lefteris. May the earth rests lightly on you.. Euripides : Alcestis.
