Title: Scotland...An unexpected journey...

Το V&A and Discovery.

Title: Scotland...An unexpected journey...

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax, Sophia Skevofylaka, Gosia Kubalczyk & Federica Chiti.

Due to unexpected situations, the Easter-fishing articles in the island of Karpathos will be posted later on ....
The appointment was set several weeks ago. As soon as it was known when dinner would take place, the preparations began. The plan was that Stavroula and I, as official guests, to be present at the dinner that would be provided by the president of Dundee Student Association, which was Sofia Skevofylaka, my daughter.

But the upcoming elections in Greece changed our plans. One month before the election, all civil servants' vacation time off were suspended, as is the case in every election in Greece, so Stavroula stayed behind. Unfortunately I had to travel alone. So the second invitation for the dinner, was used by the mother of Sophia. After a four-hour flight, I arrived late at night in Edinburgh and Sofia picked me up and ended up in Dundee.
(1st picture: Hallo Scotland...)
The next morning, everybody was busy preparing things, until everything was ready. I met a lot of people, since they wanted to meet the president's dad. Eventually the great moment had come and we all gathered in a beautiful decorated hall. There, the glamorous president welcomed us and we sat in our seats and the dinner was served. Approximately 110 VIP of Dundee University were invited, either because of positions they were holding at the university or due to their achievements during this academic year.
When we had finished with our dinner, the main event of the evening started. Sophia stood up and started her speech. (The morning of the same day, I had read her entire speech, at least I thought so, but this little rascal had hidden some parts of her speech.)
So she started, as I expected to start, thanking one-by-one her associates. She talked about what they had accomplished all together, highlighting the group effort of everyone, and changed her speech thanking to her father, mother and Stavroula ... I was speechless and moved. As she continued her speech, I noticed myself very proud, moved sitting in the shadow that the president, my daughter was casting. She finished her speech and all the attendants stood-up applauding her... Then the general secretary of the University of Dundee Dr. Jim McGeorge spoke, praising the president and her staff, saying such successes have not been achieved in the past (1st in Scotland in student experience (in four different areas) as well as 2nd, 4th, 7th and 10th in Great Britain), Closing his speech, Dr. Jim McGeorge announced the latest results of an international survey among 189 universities at the International Student Barometer, that in clubs and athletic clubs Dundee managed and came out first in the world !!!

Then it was the turn of the vice-presidents to address their speeches. One by one, the vice-presidents spoke and each of them awarded the best students, administrators and clubs in the area of their expertise.. At the end, they called on Sofia and they all became one big hug, showing in fact that they were really a well-efficient working strong team. They gave her a lovely bouquet and a gift. Then Sophia called us all to go to the specially decorated corridor where there was a surprise video for the whole team. This video provided the needed time to clean up the hall where the party would take place. When the video was ended, it was time for pictures. Then it was time for parting and dancing. It was already too late for me or rather I could say too early in the next morning. I said goodbye to everyone and let the younger generation to have fun.

The next afternoon we went for a walk in Dundee along the river to see the sights. We went to Dundee's V&A, where near by was the sailboat Discovery. Both are among the most beautiful sights of the city. (4th picture: Dundee's V&A and the Discovery). Then we walked in to the McManus Museum. It was though as you were making a journey through time and culture. From the prehistoric people of the region to the present day. Another place that a visitor of Dundee should not miss. (5th picture: The McManus Museum ). Finally we ended up watching the movie End Game, Avengers of Marvel ....
(6th picture: A panoramic view of Dundee....)
But as you know my blog is not about social connections, no matter how great or important they are. Besides, this is also said by its title: "Apnea spearfinig with..." So it was not possible not to mention the element of water or the sea in general in this description. The next morning we took the train, Sofia, Gosia and I for North Queensferry.
(7th picture: The Scottish meadows' not necessarily green...) We passed the green and colourful Scottish meadows and in less than an hour we arrived where we wanted, at Deep Sea World. It is an aquarium that has various kinds of fish, seals, snakes etc. The biggest attraction is the main tank where a glass tunnel passes under it, allowing the visitor to see the fish swimming above and next to you. Inside the main tank there were a lot of sea bass. (Dicentrarchus labrax), some fish were about 10 kilos without exaggeration, gilt-head (sea) bream (Sparus aurata), various kinds of sting rays, mullets. (Mugil cephalus), mackerel (Scomber scombrus) and of course sharks. There were small spotted catsharks (Scyliorhinus canicula) (with the well-known spots on their skin) and seven big sand tiger sharks ( Carcharias taurus). They were the main attraction. We went to meet the personnel of the aquarium and after a brief conversation we were ready. You would probably ask for what ??? To scuba dive in the main tank, what else!!!
Our trainer was called Maciek. He calmly explained everything to us in detail. Then we approached the pool where we would put on our uniforms. Together with me and Sophia there was a Scotsman named Andy. We shook hands and started to get dressed. But a small spotted catshark visited us. Maciek told us that we could pet it and the small shark seamed that it did not like and swam away. Then returned immediately for more. This happened 3-4 times before it despaired in the main tank !!! We dressed up with dry suits. I missed my elastic underwater suits in Greece. This dry suit was very tough, not elastic as I used to and I felt like an astronaut. We also wore scuba tanks, had a quick lesson with Maciek and did all the necessary exercises in order to have a safe dive. We went to the diving platform and Maciek asked a volunteer to dive first. Of course I went, then Sophia and finally Andy. The last member of this team was another trainer called Kate. Maciek had warned us that when we were reaching the bottom, the big sharks would be gathering around us because they would think we were going to feed them. So it happened. The moment I dove, Maciek told me to wait for the others and I activated my underwater camera. Two sand tiger sharks, about two metres long each approached us and they left swimming calmly. Looking left and right to get some good video shots, I noticed on my left and several meters away a great shadow approaching slowly. At the same time Sophia had submerged next to me, pointed at me to look up. At that moment, another great sand tiger shark was passing. I video its passing and turned to my left to see the approaching shadow. But instead of the shadow, the presence of a very big fish was clearly visible. It was the biggest sand tiger shark called TinkerBell (from the fairy tale with Peter Pan). TinkerBell is about 3.2 meters long and weighs about 200 kilos. (8th picture: TinkerBell & me...) She came closer, but unfortunately she turned away far enough. I turned to see how Sophia was doing, and another sand tiger shark was passing by beside us. Not even three minutes had passed and all the big sand tiger sharks had come close enough to welcome us. Sting-rays were swimming around us, mullets were staring at us, but the sea basses were staying far away. The small spotted catsharks were passing by very close and many times between our legs. Several visitors were looking at us through the glass tunnel astonished. I'm pretty sure most of them though we were crazy. All of these were happening under the watchful eyes of Maciek and Kate. They were asking us if everything was OK using the diver's sign language and were looking at the air levels in each of our scuba tanks quite often. The sand tiger sharks were passing, and I turned to see how Sofia was doing.
(9th picture: All together, From right to left: Maciek, myself, Sophia, Kate & Andy).
Sophia was sending me hearts joining her hands. All right, then. When I was concentrating on a shark and did not see the others until they had passed by us. I was ecstatic by the greatness of these beautiful creatures. It was the first time I had ever seen sharks so close, while I was swimming.  Once I've seen a shark in a fishing expedition and after it made a circle below but much deeper than us, it disappeared, I could barely see its figure, as it circled us.
Maciek signalled us to move forward. As we were moving on the bottom, among the other fish, there were three sand tiger sharks on our right and two others in front of us. Another sand tiger shark decided to pass between me and Maciek, maybe looking for some snack ??? Its behaviour seemed different to what I had experienced so far. We moved away from each other, leaving space for its greatness, to pass. It swam making a circle and then moved away. (10th picture: It wanted to pass... between us !!!). We had reached halfway through our wonderful journey and Maciek jumped some rocks, in order to return back on the other side of the aquarium, as he had told us earlier, during our training. He signalled to me to wait, since another sand tiger shark was coming, followed by a sting ray. Then we were waiting to see what another shark was going to do that was behind Maciek. As soon as it changed its direction, I passed over the rocks, but Sophia, Andy and Kate had to wait for one of the largest sand tiger sharks appeared, showing all its greatness. As soon as it passed, the rest of the team passed over the rocks, but again we had to wait for another big sand tiger shark appeared, followed by a larger one.
"They came to say goodbye to us ..." I thought and walked to the rope from where we had started our dive, twenty minutes ago. All this happened under the watchful eye of Kirsty (another trainer) and our impeccable photographer Gosia, (who took the wonderful pictures that you see). (11th picture: Our photographer Gosia with Sophia and far behind...)
I emerged, got on the platform and I took off my mask, when Kate asked. "How was the dive?" "Amazing experience, lets go for another round?" I said to her swilling. As I turned to see what the rest of the team was doing, two sand tiger sharks were swimming above the other divers. I activated my underwater camera, put my hand in the water and tried to video the sharks' passing, as best I could. After a while, Sofia, Andy and Maciek got also on the platform. We had experienced an incredible life experience, thanks to the excellent and professional training of Deep Sea World staff. and especially Maciek and Kate. We also thanked Kirsty and Chris who were also impeccable in their duties. At the end, along with the confirmation for the scuba diving, the trainers gave us, as a gift, a sand tiger shark's tooth, to each one of us. (12th picture: The gift: Small but very precious!!!)
The unexpected trip to Dundee had ended. One of the things that Sophia and I have to do in this life, has been erased from our list. Next one is: the diving with the wonderful great white shark !!! (13th picture: Athens from up above, as I returned home!!!)

You may find this article in English at the end of the Greek version.

Title: A spearfishing trip full of surprises...

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax.

1st picture: (At last the sunrise.... time for fishing )

After a long and stressful time, my family's medical problems had ended (Thank God). I decided to go for a long- fishing trip on a Saturday, to relax. So I loaded my gears into the car and early at dawn, I hit the road towards the Saronic Gulf. The first two fishing places I wanted to start my dives, were already occupied by other fishermen. I drove further away to another place and got dressed as fast as I could. Just as I entered the sea, two fishermen appeared. I dove immediately with craving and started fishing. By the time they would get dressed, I would be far enough to fish alone this vast fishing ground. The sea was blurry as I was expecting it to be. Yesterday's southern winds were responsible for the blurry wasters. I made some quick dives to worm-up my lungs and started my fishing. I just wanted to swim, to calm down and relaxed myself. I did not really care if I was going to catch some fish. The main thing was that I was diving ... I had not swim more that twenty meters and I find a dead two-banded sea-bream (Diplodus sargus) that looked fresh. Looking closer I saw that the poor creature was caught on a fishing line. I did not know how it managed to cut the line off, but it seemed its struggle probably costed its life. I looked and saw a fisherman on the beach with fishing rods. I took the small fish and gave it to him. It was his broken fishing line. He thanked me and I continued my course. In my first serious ambush, after a minute and a few seconds, a mullet (Mugil cephalus) swam by me. The fish was alone, so I did not wonder if it was followed by something bigger and so I shot it. The mullet tried to get rid of the spear by getting under a rock, but I did not let it to do so and I caught my first fish which was about a kilo. After I put it on my fish-hanger, I continued my ambushes. In one of them, two mullets passed over me. By the time I realised their presence, the fish were out of my reach. Turning my head to the direction where the two fish came, I saw that a school of fish was following them. The first two mullets seemed to be the precursors of the school. I maintained my position hidden on the sea floor, while the entire school of the mullets was out of the range of my speargun. At that moment, one mullet made its final mistake and came closer towards me. I did not expect anything more and I pressed the trigger, catching my second mullet, which was a bit bigger than the first one.
"So far so good, Zac..." I said to myself smiling. My ambushes continued, and I was enjoying the tranquility and absolute serenity of the seabed. Everything was so quiet and calm. Only the murmur of the sea I could hear. as if it was complaining to me that I forgot it for some time. (Another excuse for more diving....). I had reached the cape and in my first very long ambush, a middle size white sea-bream (Diplodus sargus) approaching me reluctantly. I did not see anything else so I focused on it. The fish approached me by making the known zigzags, as white sea-breams do when they are nervous. As it turned and I had a somewhat better target, I press the trigger, even though it was quite far away. I caught a medium white sea-bream of 370 gr.
"Well done ..." I said and swam to pass the cape. But another spear-fisherman was swimming towards me, from the other side of the cape. I turned and got out. There was no reason to fish the part of the fishing ground that already had been fished by three other divers. I returned to my car and drove to a nearby small bay. Luckily there was no one else there. I dove and started my ambushes. In one of them, and while only half a minute has passed, a sea-bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) swam over me. It looked at me and as it turned to leave, I shot it and I caught the first sea-bass of the day. It was a 1.3 kg fish.
(2nd picture: The first sea-bass!!!)
Full of joy, I collected my precious trophy and continue fishing. But the fishing ground ended without seeing anything else. I got out and drove to the next. This was a little bigger bay and at the far end, there was a fishing buoy. I dove immediately and started my ambushes before the other spear-fisherman approached me. In one of my ambushes, I had been hiding very well between some broken rocks. Only twenty seconds had passed, when I saw a silver shadow approaching me in the blurry waters. From its movements, I realised that it was a sea-bass. The fish was swimming to my right, but as soon as it realised my presence, it turned and came over me. I aimed at its face and pulled the trigger. It managed to turn, but the spear hit it on its side fins. I caught a fish of 1.2 kilos and continued fishing joyfully.
(3rd picture: The second sea-bass ). After few more ambushes, I had approached the other spear-fisherman and it was time to leave this place as well. There was no reason to fish the place that he had fished, because I was sure that the few large fishes of this place would be terrified and gone. Once again in the car. But wherever I went, there were other fishermen. But a near-by rocky bay there were no one else ....
"Either someone had fished already this small place.... or I'm lucky ,,,, " I thought and dove. I did not expect great things, but on the other hand, I did not have any other choice. After few ambushes I had reached the end of the rocky bottom, that was at -8 meters. This was a marginal depth for me, since I was wearing too many kilos (18 kilos for the shallow ambushes). I rested enough on the surface of the sea and dove. After a while, some good size white sea-breams appeared far away. I crawled on the bottom towards the fish, when I realised that I had not activated my underwater camera. I activated it and waited for the fish. Among the white sea-breams, there was a larger and wider silver figure. It is a beautiful gilt-head sea-bream (Sparus aurata) which attracted my attention, ignoring the white sea-bream, even though some of them were much closer to me. The gilt-head sea-bream was approaching me suspiciously while entering my firing range. I waited for the fish to turn, in order to have a much larger target and pulled the trigger. It was a shot of a marginal distance. The gilt-head sea-bream managed to turn in order to escape from the spear, but it was too late. The spear stroke the fish and passed through its body, like a kebab, preventing the fish to swim. Excited I dove over the fish and brought it to the surface. It is a beautiful gilt-head sea-bream of 880 gr. (4th picture: It's a beauty...) My fishing expedition had gone unexpectedly well. It was time to get out. To make my life easier, I decide to get out from a small sandy beach, instead of walking on the rocks. But the Universe had other plans in its mind. As I was swimming to the beach without wanting to fish any more, my eyes caught a familiar silhouette on the sandy bottom. A beautiful anglerfish (Lophius piscatorius) disguised, was ambushing, looking for prey. Easy target. The difficult thing is to realise its presence. I had caught once more, two years ago. This one seemed to be a bit bigger. I aimed over its eye and caught a two kilos anglerfish. (5th picture: If you are lucky....). Not even in my wild dreams, I did not expect to catch so many fish in the over-fished Saronic bay. I changed and took some quick pictures and I was gone. I found a place that did not have people and I cleaned the fish. The angler-fish had swallowed a salema porgy (Sarpa salpa) about 250g. It was folded, otherwise it would not fit in the anglerfish's stomach !!!
(6th picture: All the fishes together !!!) (7th picture: It had a great appetite...)
But something inside was telling me to dive in a nearby fishing area, that I had not fished it for a long time. So, the next morning, early at Sunday's dawn under heavy rain, I found myself trying to convince me for a quick morning dive. Finally I drag myself out of the bed and by sunrise I was diving. During the first ambushes, I saw only small fish. After a while, a school of mullets approached my ambush. Some of the fish were pretty big in size. One of the bigger ones swam close by me. I lifted the speargun, aiming the mullet, but I did not pull the trigger. I had caught enough fish yesterday. Today I was looking for something bigger. I lowered the speargun, letting the fish to pass and I continued my ambush. After few more seconds, while I was looking to my left, as I turned my head to the right, I saw a big sea bass beside me. The fish had come from my right side, while I was looking to my left, so I did not realised its presence sooner. It swam slowly in front of me and at the right moment I just pulled the trigger. The spear stroke the big hunter on its neck. The shot was so close, that the whole spear had passed through the fish. The sea bass attempted to escape by dragging along the spear without success, and as I reeled in the rope, it sat down on the sea floor exhausted. (8th picture: Just before the end...) I embraced it, kissed it many times and thanked the Heavens for their wonderful gift, I went out almost walking on the sea !!! This was probably the last sea-bass fishing for this season.
(9th picture: The end...) (10th picture: !!!)
The sea-bass weighted 3.34 kilos...

P.S. It was a fishing expedition full of surprises. Life has its ups and downs. As the song says: "Everything happens for a reason...."

You may find this article in English at the end of the Greek version.

Title: The mistake, the trophy, the miss and more....
Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax.

1st picture: (Fishing with in the Light!!!)

Once again, in the middle of the winter, I went for a quick dive. I expected the water to be blurry, but I found it more blurred than I thought. I dove and started my ambushes right away. In about three hours the day light it would be gone, so I had to be in a hurry. After making some dives, to warm my lungs, I went to my well-known places and started fishing by ambushing and looking for some good size fish. In an ambush, I felt a presence behind me, on my back. I turned as calmly as I could and saw four broad shadows.
"Large blue butterfish (Stromateus fiatola)... " I thought. I turned my speargun toward the nearest target and pulled the trigger. The fish with the spear on it, began to struggle, while the rest of the flock disappeared into the blur. The fish was struggling hard enough, but since my shot was very good, I pulled quickly the fish near me. Unfortunately I was wrong. It was not a big blue butterfish but a small lichia (Lichia amia) about a kilo. If I knew that it was a lichia of such size, there was no way I would shoot such a small fish. But my shot was fatal and the fish would not live if I let it free. I felt sorry for catching such a small fish, but I could not do anything else. (2nd picture: My mistake...)  I hung it on my belt and swam further away. On the next ambush, I crawled between two rocks and waited. My ambush was almost perfect, I could say. I was very well hidden while having a panoramic view. The seconds were passing, and far enough a good size lichia, about 5-6 kilos, passed very quickly far away from me. It was probably part of the previous flock and I did not realise its presence. The fish did not approach me at all, which meant it was scared recently. The previous shot was a mistake and I paid its price. Hoping that the fish could turn around, I remained hidden, making gentle noises to provoke its curiosity. But then I realised that a big sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was following the lichia, but much closer to me. The fish was marginally with-in the range of my speargun and it was swimming away. I instinctively aimed and pressed the trigger. The spear stroke its target, the fish took some rope from my reel and then the absolute immobility. The rope of the reel was completely immobile. Nothing was pulling it and I did not feel any vibrations at the other end. I could not see anything due to the blurry waters!!!
"Probably the spear did not hold it and got away .... " I thought. Disappointed I swam lazily to pick-up my spear ... when I saw the fish on the cloudy sea floor. The spear had stroke it on its back and it had come out under its mouth. As a result the fish could not swim!!! I dove and grabbed the spear when I realised that the spear-tip was still in the fish. I pushed the spear to secure the big fish. I've caught a 3.3 kilos sea bass and I was full of joy. (3rd picture: A beautiful prey!!!) I embraced it, while the sea bass was strangling to get free, but it was already too late. At that moment, I had arrived at the end of the fishing ground and I needed to reach a quick decision, if I should stop fishing or to continue in another fishing place near-by, before it got dark. I dove for one last ambush before I turned back. I did not expect to see or catch any fish. As I landed on the bottom and ambushed, I noticed my left many small fishes were gathered around a stone.
"Something big is under that rock... " I thought. After few seconds a big mediterranean moray eel (Muraena helena) in front of me. The fish came out of the rock and started swimming away from me. This was a great opportunity to film the moray eel. By the time it realised my presence, it froze in the middle of nowhere, waiting to see what I was going to do. I was approaching it calmly while filming this beautiful creature. The moray eel was observing me, while showing me its numerous teeth. I emerged in order to change the angle of my filming, while I found a grip on a rock in front and above the fish. ( 4th picture: The big sea snake!!!) The tip of my spear almost was touching the fish's nose. This 2 to 3 kilos moray eel was looking without knowing what to do. I'm sure it was thinking that it was in a big trouble, if this big and black creature decided to attack it!!! When I was out of air, I left my grip and emerged in the surface of the sea, while the moray eel was trying with its tale to find a rock to get under it and hide.Being unable to find a hole with its tail, the fish turned and swam under the first rock it found. I swam as fast as I could, I got to my car and drove for the next bay. By the time I arrived, I dove immediately and started fishing. I was beginning to feel the coldness of the sea (13°C) due to the many and long and underwater ambushes. Most of the times, I only saw small fish. In one of these ambushes, I managed to hide well between two flat rocks. A minute and a half had passed while waiting hidden, when a size good white sea bream (Diplodus sargus) appeared. The fish was coming towards me from some distance. It was swimming nervously, but approached in full curiosity to see what was the black thing that did not blend well with the landscape. With gentle moves, corrected my aim. At the moment it entered the firing distance, I pulled the trigger. The spear advanced with great speed and stoke the white sea bream just before its tail. I caught a half-kilo white sea bream (430 g). (5th picture: ....) I put it on my fishing hanger and continued. A little further down on another ambush, I was looking around to see if there was any big pray. Seconds were passing with out finding anything worth catching. A minute and forty seconds had passed, when the black damselfish (Chromis chromis) in front of me, entered terrified a rock on the sea floor.
"Something big is approaching, but from which direction????" I wonder and looked around. Suddenly I saw a nice gilt-head (sea) bream (Sparus aurata) in front of me. The fish was approaching me very quickly. Fearing that suddenly it would turn around and it would disappear in the blurry waters, I pressed the trigger and of course I missed. (6th picture: I managed to miss...) I lost my temper, so I did not aim correctly and lost a wonderful fish. I hit the white sea bream that was a much smaller target and missed the bigger one.... Oh well, such is life... Disappointed from my miss, I found the courage and swam to the nearby cape, for 2-3 ambushes before I finished fishing. I did not expect to see anything special. I dove and landed on the sea bed, but the angle of the sun was such, that it looked like as if I was fishing in the light!!!. The whole scene filled me with a wonderful tranquility, as I was in ecstasy, looking at this unparalleled beauty of everyday's miracle. The next ambush was the last one for today's fishing. Once again I landed on the sea floor, with in the first 30 seconds, the black damselfish swam terrified under the rocks of the sea bed. Their movement showed me that something was approaching from my left. Indeed, a large school of mullets (Mugil cephalus) appeared swimming fast. But at the edge of the school of mullets there were two gilt-head (sea) bream. At least I managed to see two in the blurry waters. I aimed at the closest one and I pressed the trigger. It was a marginal shot of despair. Due to the blurry waters I was not able to see the results of
my action.
"Probably it would had been better if I did not pulled the trigger....." I thought and swam towards the rock that my spear had landed. I was shocked when I saw that the gilt-head (sea) bream was there,
( 7th picture: The lucky shot...) At that moment, today's spearfishing expedition had ended, which was unexpectedly successful I could say, even though I did manage to miss the big gilt-head (sea) bream!!! Shortly before I went out, I found a small anglerfish (Lophius piscatorius). I found a fish half-eaten, I cut a piece from it and put it on a plastic straw. I approached it by swinging the straw from left to right, in order to resemble that the piece of fish was alive. The small anglerfish refused to eat. It looked like as if it had escaped from a fishing net or someone threw it back into the sea. I left the piece of the fish next to it and went out....

You may find this article in English at the end of the Greek version.

Title: Sea bass and the voracious star-fish!!!

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax.
1st picture: ( We are still in the middle of winter!!!)

After many days of cold weather, the weather softened because of the south winds. So at the first opportunity, one afternoon I went for a maximum of two hours spearfishing, at a nearby fishing ground. I had loaded all my gears in the car and after finishing with my responsibilities, I drove to the place I wanted. Meanwhile the weather had changed, and from south winds to NNW winds. I did not mind at all this change and geared up as fast as I could. The sea temperature was 14 ° C and the sea was not as blurred as I expected to find it. I did a few ambushes in order to worm-up my lungs, and I swam to the area I was hoping to find some fish. In the first two ambushes I did not see anything. In the next one, while I was hiding well between the rocks of the seafloor, a small sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), accompanied by a school of mullets. (Mugil cephalus), appeared a bit further away. The sea bass swam directly towards me, to observe what this hidden creature was doing. It came very close, almost touched the tip of my spear, turned and got back into the school of the mullets. One of the mullets was a good size fish and while I was starting to press the trigger of the speargun, I decided I had come to catch something better or bigger. Something inside myself, it was telling me not to shoot it!!! The movement of the speargun and my hesitation, allowed the fish to swim away.
"If I am to catch something, let it be big. Let's not catch any mullets today, unless they are very big..." I said to myself. As if they were listening to my thoughts, and in the next ambush, there were flocks of mullets in front of me. Some flocks were numerous. Most fish were about a kilo. I just looked at them and tried to get the video shots I wanted. At some moments, I caught myself squeezing the trigger of the speargun. By realising it, I eased the pressure off the trigger and let the fish to pass-by undisturbed. I continued my fishing without much success. The ambushes continued without seeing anything special. There were many small fish around and I was beginning to doubt my decision not to catch mullets. So I continued my dives and enjoyed my fishing. Dive after dive, I managed to hold my breath longer and started observing myself. I was looking for my muscles to be relaxed. From time to time I was realising that a muscle was tightened unnecessarily. I relaxed it and searched for another. When I had relaxed enough, I was hearing my heart beats. In the absolute tranquility of the sea, being relaxed on the sea floor, all I was hearing was my heart. It was working unstoppably. Nether I had any ability to intervene, or any control over it.
"Someone else Defines These Zach, SOMEONE ELSE!!!" I said to myself. Slowly my heart pulses slowed down as my stays on the sea floor became longer... Then I reached a place where the sea floor was covered with large flat stones. In the past I had caught some good fish here. I noticed a large flock of sand smelts (Atherina hepsetus) near the surface of the sea.
"We may get lucky .... Who knows?" I thought. After I calmed down and got ready, I took a deep breath and dove. I was hidden behind some rocks as best as I could and waited. A good size but lonely mullet passed by.
"You are lucky .... today ..." I told the mullet, smiling while emerging. I dove again, hiding and waited. Several seconds had passed and a silver silhouette appeared in the background. Two more figures followed the leading fish. The first fish and the third one, were the bigger ones. Not that the middle one was a small one. If it was alone, I would definitely shoot it. The fish were swimming very close to the surface, probably they were after the sand smelts. When the leading sea bass realised my presence, turned and kept a safe distance. The second fish, the "smallest" one, came over me. Seeing that it was being followed by a bigger one, I ignored it and let it pass. The fish came close to me, looked at me, turned and swam away calmly. This behaviour made the following bigger fish to approached me calmly too. I had a shot but I wanted to make sure it would be successful since it was the only chance I had so far. The big sea bass came closer, turned to swim away when I pressed the trigger. The spear stroke the fish on its neck. (2nd picture: The shooting.....) The sea bass struggled, trying to get rid of the spear. I did not manage to kill it instantly and so its struggle scared away the rest of the fish. I saw only three fish, but the video later on showed me eight sea basses!!! I reeled in the sea bass quickly, giving it a quick end and kissed many times. Even though, I did not expect to catch any fish, He Gave me a three-kilogram sea bass (2.810 g). (3rd picture: The smaller one!!!). Full of joy, after I had put the sea bass on my fishing holder, I continued the ambushes. I did not expect to see any other fish after the fight with sea bass so I swam further away. A small octopus got my attention for a while, but as it was gone under a rock, I swan even further. Shortly before the end of the fishing ground, I reached some flat rocks that I knew from past fishing expeditions. I dove, ambushed and waited. A minute and a some seconds had passed, without any fish coming over the flat rocks. As I was looking around, I noticed on my right a large, silvery silhouette coming towards me, from far away. I had plenty of time to slowly turn the speargun towards the fish and waited for it. The sea bass was approaching with curiosity trying to realise what was Ι. (4th picture: The approaching...) That was its last mistake. The sea bass was a big target and at the right height. I do not let it to turn and I shut it directly on its face. The spear stroke it just behind the eye and the sea bass just sank !!! (5th picture: The big one !!!).I could not believe what I was seeing. Last week I was fishing all day and did not see a fish worth catching, and today in less than two hours I caught two wonderful fish. The second was bigger than the first (3,190 g). I did not want to fish any more. Full of joy, I started swimming towards my car. Once in a while I dove and waited, but I did not see anything and did not care. But a few meters before I went out of the sea, my eyes caught something different. On a stone, a great starfish had grabbed something or rather had hooded something, in order to be more precise in my description. I activate my underwater camera and dove, I approached and unsoldered three of its legs from the rock to see what it was doing. I had arrived at the most appropriate time. It was the moment that it was devouring an oyster. With his powerful legs, it had opened the oyster just enough, so that with its mouth, which is located in the centre of its legs, was sucking its victim's flesh. ( 6th picture: Eating time!!!). I let it to continue its dinner and I went out. I have seen this incident several times on TV documentaries but never live in the sea. I changed, cleaned the fish and a dinner was set with our friends. (7th picture: It is over for today...)

P.S. 1. I visited the same fishing grounds without success after a few days. I searched and found the oyster that looked intact. He had a small slit at the edge of its shell and looked intact. I approached and it did not move at all. Something was not going well ... I tried to open it, but I could n't. I used my diving knife as a lever and opened it. The starfish had literally sucked all the flesh of the oyster, leaving only the muscle that closes the shells of the oyster !!!
2. The big sea bass was eaten with Maria and Spyros. But from our the company Maria and Mike, were missing who, due to an unexpected event, did not attend the feast... It does not matter, there will be another time ...
(8th picture: The big one!!!), (9th picture: Get ready...)
