Title: Karpathian Sea Easter Gifts... Part 2

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

(1st picture:This was the weather on Good Saturday!!!)

The Easter days in Karpathos were passing in absolute tranquility, while the NNW winds were calming down. Of course I went fishing almost every day, but my catches were very minimal.
(2nd picture: I am the butcher...).
On Good Thursday, the goat for Easter Sunday's feast arrived. The island's tradition states that it should be baked in an wooden oven (for those who have one) or in the electric one. The goat gets stuffed and tastes delicious. Since I am dating a butcher's daughter (Stavroula), I decided to became a butcher for a while under the guidance of my mother. So I began to cut where Lady Mimitsa was telling me. "Not that, cut it here, do not touch this..... etc ..." Eventually I finish with my butcher's duty...Then I went out to the garden to see what my father was doing. The garden had slowly begun to take its summery look. The winter vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower etc ...) were ending and the summer ones were starting to grow. (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, cantaloupe ....) I helped Farmer John as much as I could and the day passed smoothly and quietly.
(Picture #3: The garden is changing face...)
But on the morning of the Good Saturday, the sea was motionless again. Knowing that the Karpathian sea can suddenly change and get rough, right after the church has finished, I decided to go for my last Easter dive in my beloved Karpathos. Since it would be my last dive, I decided to fish by covering a great distance. I was planning to fish the shallows as well as the deeper places that I knew. I loaded my gears in my car and drove for the fishing grounds. In order not to swim the same area twice, I parked the car, got dressed, took all the needed fishing gears, and walked about a kilometre. I passed the next cape and climbed down the small cliff and reached the beach very sweaty due to the sunny day. I dove and the sea seemed so cool.... I started my fishing expedition by searching for the gifts the blue goddess would offer me. In the shallow I found two good goatfish, (Mullus surmuletus) Especially the second was a very nice one. I swam to a deeper place since I did not find anything in that bay. As I approached an underwater cliff, I decided to change the speargun and took a longer one in case there was a big grouper around the cliff. I dove, but in vain. Nothing was there. Looking around I saw two big trumpet-fish (Fistularia commersonii). I returned to the buoy, took a smaller speargun, but on my rush I forgot to put on my underwater camera and thus I lost a nice video-shot as I caught one of the two big trumpet-fish. I put the fish on my buoy and as I took the longer speargun, I saw a large white sea-bream (Diplodus sargus) swimming around a deeper rock.
"I do not think it will stay around as I will approach it, but I have no choice..." I thought. When I was ready, I dove as quietly as I could. To my great surprise, the big white sea-bream continued to swam around. I was approaching it as close as I could. When I got in range, I waited to have a better target and then pushed the trigger. The spear left at incredible speed, striking crucially the big white sea-bream.  I could not believe what was happening. This was a strange white sea-bream's behaviour. Usually, these fish disappear when they see a diver with a speargun, but this did not!!!
(4th picture: The big white sea-bream...)
I reeled in the spear along with the beautiful white sea-bream  I continued my diving without seeing anything great. I took the smaller speargun again and started searching some rocks on the sea bed. At my deepest dive (-22 meters) I searched a nice cave that in the past I had caught some big dusky groupers (Epinephelus guaza). Unfortunately I did not see anything. But as I looked outside of the cave, I saw some nice white sea-breams swimming few meters further. I changed direction and crawled alongside the long-sanded rock towards the fish, which they swam and entered in the next slit that I knew. I aimed at the last fish and pooled the trigger. I caught another white sea-bream, a bit smaller than the previous one.
(5th picture: The deepest white sea-bream...)
I searched around and caught two more white sea-breams. As I was putting them on my buoy, I saw some big parrot-fish (Sparisoma cretense) further away from me. I swam towards them. I ignored most of the fish and concentrated towards the leader of the fish, which was the biggest of all. The leader was big parrot-fish about a kilo!!! I tried to kill instantly the leader by shooting it on he head. This way the rest of the part-fish would not be scared. I managed to shoot it on the head, but the spear, due to the distance, just scratched its head. The fish in shock burst under the first rock it found. Knowing that it would not stay for long, I armed my speargun as fast as I could and dove on the rock where the fish was hiding. Looking inside the rock, I thought I saw its side fin and pressed the trigger. But what I saw was its tail and pulling out the shaft, the fish came tale first. I took the big parrot-fish and emerged. In my next ambush, I caught another big parrot-fish. I left the rest of the herd and started searching some rocks. In some slits I caught another two white sea-breams. At that point I decided to end my fishing expedition in a rock at the shallows, that in the past I had caught dusky groupers. As I was swimming, I reached a place with many flat rocks between the seaweed. It is a cunning and difficult place, because if the fish get under the rocks, it is very difficult to catch them. So it happened with two good white sea-brreams. As I was emerging from an unsuccessful search, I noticed some shadows under a nearby rock. I got a fast breath and dove right away. This time there were 5-6 saddled sea-breams (oblada malanura) under the rock. I was able to catch one of the biggest ones which was about half a kilo.
( 6th picture: The biggest saddled sea-bream...)
As I continuing my fishing, I notice that saddled sea-breams were running. At one point the fish swam in parallel to a long rock. I dove quickly and as they pass below me, I aimed at the biggest one and pulled the trigger. I caught one, a little smaller than the previous one.
"Vertical shot on saddled sea-breams, while running!!! The Almighty wanted me to have this fish ... " I thought. At that time I was approaching the end of my diving expedition as I had planned, when I saw a nice green ballan wrasse (labrus bergylta). The fish was about a kilo. My father loves the fish-soup that is made out of this kind of fish. I let the fish to pass from the various rocks and as soon as it came next to a dark slit, the fish calmed down. I took a breath, dove and caught it. Then I swam looking for the rock that I was planning to stop fishing. Unfortunately there was not a dusky grouper under it, as I was expecting, but it was over it. A 2.5-3 kilogram dusky grouper swam under a nearby rock. Knowing the area well, I waited to see where the dusky grouper would go, since that rock that the fish got under could not provide it any cover. Indeed, the fish came out from the other side of the rock, trying to hide in the different shadows and reached its cave. There it turned and looked at me. As I approached, it turned and went into its chamber. I swan even closer to the rock, very quietly and I waited. The depth was negligible, not more than 5 meters. After few seconds, I saw its nose protruding from the rock. I pulled myself a little behind the rock and dove. The curiosity of the dusky grouper made it to come out of its cave even more. I was ready, and when I saw it, aimed at its eye and pulled the trigger. The dusky grouper was shut on its left eye. I pulled out the about 3 kilos fish easily, embraced it and emerged to the surface.
(7th picture: Here is the king!!!)
At that point my fishing was over. I put dusky grouper on my buoy and swam towards the beach. As I approached the beach, I saw some middle white sea-breams. These fish are very familiar with divers. By the time they saw me, they scattered and went into very difficult holes among the bottom rocks. I did not bother to look for them, but my curiosity was attracted by a white sea-bream that was wondering around a rock. As I came closer, it took off.
"I would dive one last time and then I would go out ... " I said Ito myself. Under the rock, there is a big mullet (Mugil cephalus).  Instinctively I aimed and shot it. I embraced my last trophy and got out.
(8th picture: The big mullet is caught...)
Looking at my diving watch, I saw that I was fishing for six hours and had covered a distance more that a mile. I put my gears into my car and got ready to returned home. When I sat on the driver's chair, I realized my tiredness. I felt like a corpse !!! Fortunately, the distances in Karpathos are not long. So after a few minutes I was home relaxing!!! After I had enough rest, I placed the fish and took some pictures. The cleaning would be done tomorrow.
(9th picture: Easter fishing in Karpathos is over...)
(10th picture: Let get started...)
(11th picture: It had a great appetite....)
But the weather has begun to change again. Clouds gathered above the island and the rain started in a few hours. The rain lasted all night. At some point along with the rain, hail was fallen too. On Easter Sunday morning, Sofia (my daughter) and I, started to clean the fish. It took us about two hours to clean them all. The dusky grouper had a great appetite before it died. He had swallowed a whole crab and a German ( the fish and not a tourist ...) or it is known as dusky spinefoot (Siganus sp.)
Then the Easter table was laid, and the great feast began, which included, the stuffed goat, the baked potatoes along with my father's salad (from his garden). We devoured everything. According to the Greek Eater tradition we clinked boiled red painted eggs and Lady Mimitsa was the winner. She broke all our eggs!!!
(12th picture: May this happen again next year!!!)
The day passed quietly and thus my Easter holidays in Karpathos has ended..
Summer is coming soon.... I will be back in Karpathos..... at the right time......

                                                     Farmer John in action....

Η κυρά Μιμήτσα in action....

«Ως εδώ ήταν..... πάει η μπουνάτσα, μας τελείωσε...» σκέφτηκα. Ο γνωστός Καρπάθικος καιρός είχε κάνει την εμφάνιση του για άλλη μια φορά. Από εδώ και πέρα το ψάρεμα θα γινόταν μέσα στα κύματα;;;;

Karpathian Sea Easter Gifts Part 1

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

(1st picture: A pleasant surprise!!!)

I did not remember in so many years I had traveled to Karpathos, my favorite island, that I had traveled in a night flight. In this unprecedented experience, the full moon was added. Just before we landed, the moonlight had painted with silver colour the surface of the sea. It was as though I was in another Universe, somewhere else in the Creation of the Almighty. Together with the tranquility of the landscape, the whole spectacle was unreal. But another surprise was waiting for me. The strong NNW winds were absent!!!!!! After I met my parents (hugs and kisses) we drove to our home.
The next morning, the surprise was still present. The sea was motionless. It was an opportunity to go diving to some places that the NNW winds strike them all the times. I decided to go a little later and went out to the garden to see what John Farmer was doing. After opening grooves, he made the pits, put the goat's droppings, shuffled the soil with the manure, he planted his cucumbers. He had already planted his pumpkins, peppers and eggplants. I sat down and watched him with how much love he did the agricultural jobs or rather his farm hobby. Every plant was treated it as if it was a new child, with much love and affection. (2nd-6th picture: Farmer John in action...)
At one point I concentrated by listening the outdoor environment. Silence was prevailing. The absolute peace !!!! Once in a while a birdie was singing. At that time, a goat's complaining bleat was heard. Then silence. The absolute silence !!! The mind rests, the spirit calms.....
It was the time to feed the cats. Every cat was gathered around my father and he cared for them with incredible love once more. I went inside the house to see what my mother was doing, the madam-Mimitsa otherwise (as I called her in order to tease her)!!! I found her in her kitchen after she had prepared the traditional Karpathians buns and was cleaning her kneading machine. After a while she was going to prepare and bake our family's bread.
(7th picture: Madam Mimitsa in action...)
It was time to get ready for my new fishing adventure. Even the universe was agreeing for this dive. Such calm sea should not be missed. I prepared my stuff, I loaded it in the car and drove for a deep fishing place I was planning to dive. I parked my car and I descended the small cliff, dressed on a small beach and when I was ready, I dove. The waters here in Karpathos were much warmer than the ones in Attica. In the surface the temperature was 17 degrees Celsius. But the southwest winds had turned the sea waters a bit blurry. I dove in shallow waters to warm-up my lungs and then I swam for the deep place I had chosen. When I reached at my destination, I could barely see the sea floor from the surface. I dove and swam to cover a lot of distance in order to find the best fishing places that I knew. I dropped the rope of my buoy next to the rock I wanted to dive. But due to the blur and the sight of a big parot-fish, made me to loose the main entrance of the rock by about one meter. So I found myself a little farther from the main entrance. There I saw a big black head of a dusky grouper, who after looking at me, turned and swam under the rock that was at about -25 meters from the surface. I had a shot but the long distance and the size of the fish, made me to hesitate and I did not pressed the trigger. As the dusky grouper turned, I saw a white mark on its body.
"O no! The fish has been shut and I just lost it ... " I thought. Looking better I noticed that the white mark was its side fin and was not due to an old wound. I was relived when I realised that and emerged.  After I had relaxed for some minutes on the surface, I was ready for a second dive. But this time I knew exactly how and where to dive. I ideally approached the entrance of the rock. But the dusky grouper was a bit left than I expected it. So it turned and got into the rock. I followed it calmly, I turned on my flash light and as soon as the fish turned and looked at me, I pressed the trigger of my speargun aiming at the face of the fish. The dusky grouper tried to avoid the spear but it was too late. The spear had struck it in the nose and had come out next to the side fin. I pulled the spear and I felt the fish fighting on the other side of the spear. I was a little delayed by the spear as it had been tangled between two rocks. Pushing it a little forward came out very easily. I embraced the dusky grouper tightly and emerged.
(8th picture: The king was caught....)
Basically my fishing trip was over. I caught a fish of about seven kilos and I did not want anything else. I did some more dives to observe the place. Nothing was swimming. Everything seemed dead. In my opinion, it was the intense thermocline few meters before the sea floor. That's why the dusky grouper I caught was under the rock. I did not see it outside. If I did not know the particular rock, I would not catch the fish. In one of my dives, I saw something moving next to another rock. I dove and when I got next to that rock, I found myself face to face with a two kilo dusky grouper. The fish stood in front of its cave and looked at me. I smiled at the innocence of the small fish, I saluted it and emerged. I picked up my buoy and swam towards the shallows. Looking into different rocks, I managed to catch two middle size sheepsheads. Since I did not want to miss the wonderful day, I went to the car. There, after I changed my gear, I started fishing in shallow waters. There were more fish in the shallows but not great ones. The waters were much warmer here. As I was swimming, my glance caught a motion on the bottom. It seemed to me that a stone was swimming !!!
"This is not possible...." I thought. I changed my direction and swam towards the swimming stone. Looking better I saw it was a nice cuttlefish. It was an easy target. He aimed and caught it. After a while I caught another one. Then I saw a school of parrot-fish. Most of the fish were medium in size, but the leader was a big one. I dove and ambushed on the seabed and caught it. As I taking care of it, under my fins there was another cuttlefish. which I caught it too.
(9th picture: One of the three cuttlefish...)
I had caught three cuttlefish and I was drooling, thinking how tasteful they would be if they were cooked with rise or with spinach. By ambushing on the seabed I caught a total of five parot-fish. Then I started searching the rocks I was interested. I managed to catch four more sheepsheads but I did not get a good sea-bass about two kilos. The fish came from behind me as I was taking care one of the sheepshead. Quickly I armed my speargun and turned slowly towards the sea bass. It turned and headed for a big rock. By the time it got behind it, I swam quickly towards the rock. The fish came out of the side I was expecting but with great speed. The moment it felt me, it disappeared towards the opposite direction. The same happened with a very nice barracuda. Again, having caught a sheepshead, as I emerged behind the rocks, the barracuda pasted in front of me and disappeared into the deep blue.
"Probably it had come to see what was the black thing doing, that made so much noise under the stones ..." I thought. Both of them approached me closely and never saw them again. After making a few ambushes, I decided to go out. As I was swimming to the beach, I saw a crawfish on a rock. I dove and while I mislead it with the speargun, I grabbed it with a quick movement of my right hand. Looking at this very tasty creature, I realised it was too small. I took a breath, dove and left it in a slit in order to have better chances to survive.
(10th picture: Good luck little one...)
"If we meet again in the future, your luck will be different my little one ...." I said smilingly. and got out of the water. I arrived home very tired, rested for a while and took some pictures of the entire catch. Late in the afternoon, farmer John along with his fishing kit, cleansed all the fish. The dusky grouper was 6.9 kilos.... (11th picture: The Karpathian Wellcome!!!!)
The weather had begun to change. The well-known NNW wind made its appearance on the horizon. Slowly it had reached six Beaufort in strength.
"So that was all ..... the calm sea is history..." I thought. The well-known Carpathian weather had made its appearance once again. From now on, fishing would take place in the waves????

....to be continued....

Title: Sea drops and much more.... #1

(1st picture:Even during winter there is Light on Earth.)

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax.

Sea drops, and much more, consists of short stories, which can not be an entire story. So I decided to put several short stories together to complete an entire article.

#1. The end of the summer was approaching. In a few days I would leave my beloved island of Karpathos. The toothache and the high fever was gone and I was calm for few days. But the weather was holding strong. The seven beaufort of NNW winds was present. I was thinking, where should I go fishing? I did not dive for more than 10 days and I did not have the urge to fight the waves. So, I decided to go to a bay where was protected by such weather. It would have some waves, but not much. Besides, I did not want to dive very deep, nor even to fish for many hours. I got dressed and dove in the blue waters of Karpathos. The waters were crystal clear as all over the island. I started to swim looking for big fishes. There were few parrotfish.... The big ones took off when they saw me. Some big sheep-heards also disappeared under the rocks. I knew the place very well. Once they got under the rocks, none could find them. But the place had given me many unexpected surprises in the past. Hoping for such a surprise, I swam further and I saw a beautiful grouper. The fish was about 4 kilos and the sea floor was no more than 6 meters. Without losing it from my eyesight, I dropped as calmly as possible the rope which was attached to my buoy and I approached the fish very slowly. The fish calmly turned and got under a nearby rock. I dove and approached the rock, but the entrance was a bit narrow, but I managed to find it. The fish was lurking in the depth of its hole and just barely I could see it. Targeting the grouper the best way I could, I pulled the trigger. Like an explosion, the grouper's hole became blur at once. The fish tried to get rid of the shaft, shaking violently its body, stirring the sand from the sea floor of its hole. I grabbed and pulled the shaft steadily, which was not heavy, meaning that the fish had escaped. Neither I could not see anything nor do anything. I must wait for the sand to settle in order to be able to see what was going in the grouper's hole.... I decided to fish around for 10 minutes before returning. The only fish I caught was a nice goat-fish. I returned back to the grouper's hole disappointed.
"All I found was a fish and I lost it ..... I was wondering if I could get it again ..." I thought. After I prepared myself again, I dove into its hole without hoping for much. As I was approaching the entrance my underwater camera hit on a rock.
"Oh no.... the grouper is terrified, I'm making too much noise..." I thought and looked inside. As a miracle the fish was there, lurking in the depth of its hole. There was no room to hide !!!! Why the fish did not flee??? I target the fish again and pulled the trigger. (2nd picture:At last...)
The shaft was shaking violently. I grabbed and pulled it firmly. This time the shaft was heavy. As soon as I saw the grouper, I embraced it as were dancing a tight tango, ascended to the surface. Searching its body, I saw that the first shot had stroke it low on the side fin, without causing much damage. My question was: why the grouper did not leave and stayed in a hole that could not hide well? (3rd picture: When the Almighty Wants to Provide...)
If the Almighty Wants to Provide...and my fishing adventure ended. `the grouper was 4.1 kilos.

#2. The winter had begun to show its teeth. But I was looking for its company. Sea-bass, sea-bream, mullets, etc. So I started looking for them. I decided to be a hero by diving in the north Evoikos bay. The waters had cooled enough. 14C on the surface. I drove to the area I had planned and dove. Endless posidoniae with planted pen-shells, sprinkled with the golden gleam of the blur. Τhe underground streams made my fishing adventure more difficult. In certain areas, I was just swimming to pass through due to the thick blur. On those areas everything was yellow and blurry. In the first ambushes, I caught two small sea-bass. I was tricked by the blur and when suddenly I saw the fish next to me, they gave me the impression of being bigger ones. I made the mistake and caught two 700g fish. Then started a long journey without seeing the slightest fish. In certain areas there were some smelts, but the sea-basses were absent. I did not have a choice but to continue my fishing or my swimming I could say to be more accurate of my description. As I was passing by a pen-shell my glance caught something that did blend into the environment. Looking more carefully I saw an octopus, a big octopus !!! (4th picture: The hiding giant) It was hiding behind the pen-shell and it became one with the aquatic environment. If I had pass a meter further, I would certainly not have seen it. I turned my speargun, aimed and caught easily a 5.2 kilos octopus. It tried to escaped, but my shot and with the help of my knife gave it a quick end. (5th picture: I caught it....) I continued fishing without seeing anything special. I went out, put the fishes in the cooler, changed and I started devouring the food that I brought with me. Then I took the road of return, quite tired more from the cold rather than my dives ... I believe ..(6th picture: The octopus and its company....)

#3. The south winds was blowing strong with heavy rain and plenty of waves. When I saw the whole picture I was crazy of joy. The whole situation was smelling the sea-bass.... I ignored the rain and got dressed as fast as I could. I waited for a big wave to pass and I dove. I had not been able to swim a few meters at a quick glance, I saw something that did not blend with the environment. There was something laying on the sand .... I approached it while arming my speargun and I saw in front of me camouflaged on the seafloor an angler-fish. I got even closer but the angler-fish was still motionless.(7th picture: Camouflaged on the sea floor.) Easy target. I aimed it and the shaft stoke the angler-fish on the eye. I pull it closer to me, but with caution. As I approach the angler-fish, it opened its chaotic mouth, showing its sharp teeth. Its teeth are like pointed nails. Angler-fish do not chew their pray, but swallows it whole. The top side of the angler-fish is camouflaged in the color of sand. Its bottom is white. It has a strong tail and two strong side fins that complement this hunter's mobility. To avoid its enemies it has on the back of its head two large spines that are very sharp and covered with its skin. To become even more successful as a hunter, it also has a movement to trick its prey besides its camouflage. So there is a transparent antenna, ending in a small flag....When a prey passes, it shakes its antenna and as the victim approaches close enough to see or eat the "treat", it rushes and swallows it whole. The two kilos angler-fish had swallowed a flounder and a sardine. She had an huge appetite, I could say.... (8th picture: The angler-fish and its bait...)
After five hours of fishing, in the waves with heavy rain, just before I went out, I caught a mullet just over a kilo.... (9th picture: All together....)
Once again, I have seen an angler-fish in eastern part of the Evia island. That fish also I had found in the shallows. It was floating in the surface of the sea and its was as big as a tennis ball !!!! There were some bubbles of air in its gills, and poor little creature could not dive. By the time I approached it, it opened its mouth to enlarge its size and attacked me. It waggled its small tale violently as much as it could, and attacked me !!!! I took it gently in my arms, I waved it right and left to remove the bubbles from its gills go and let it go. It continued to keep its mouth open until it realised that there was not any danger and descend to the deep sea .... (10th picture: All together.)
(11th picture:The incredible mouth!!!) (12th picture: It had a great appetite...)
