Title: Tiger tooth croaker: A surprise amidst the murky waters!!!

Title: Tiger tooth croaker: A surprise amidst the murky waters!!!
Video & photos : Zacharias Skevofilax
After a several unsuccessful spearfishing trips, I decided to visit the North Evoikos Bay again. I arrived at dawn and was delighted to find out that the sea was dead calm. I geared up as quickly as I could and dove in. I moved further along and began my ambushes. Before long, the first school of grey mullets (Mugil cephalus)) appeared. In several instances, the fish swam right past me, but I was looking for something else. (1st Picture: For two hours I was looking for predators...but in vain!!!). I didn't disturb them, since I was looking for bluefish (Temnodom saltator)or sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Quite some time passed, and finally, the long-awaited bluefish appeared. A large school of bluefish passed me twice before vanishing into the murky waters. I was pleased to see so many bluefish... (2nd Picture: Many but small...).
"Where are your mothers or grandmothers?" I asked them. They were all small; I don't think there was a single fish weighing over a kilo. I continued my ambushes, and grey mullets appeared again. Seeing nothing better, I decided to take one of the larger ones. Sure enough, a short while later, one of the bigger ones swam past on my left, and I shot it. That’s how I caught the first fish of the day, weighing 1.1 kilos. (3rd Picture: The first for today...). I made a few more ambushes and decided to head out. Just before exiting, a small stingray darted out from under my feet.
"Is it all alone?" I wondered, and took a closer look. Sure enough, after a moment, I spotted another small stingray (Myliobatoidei), camouflaged and buried in the sandy seabed. (4th Picture: I found it...). I moved closer to get the video shot I wanted, and it darted away when I got too close. (5th Picture: I probably got too close...). I swam underwater a bit further because I had spotted another one. The same thing happened as before, and I got out. I stowed the fish in the ice cooler, drove a few kilometres, and headed to the old platform. I made several fruitless ambushes before witnessing something magical. While lying and waiting, a large number of two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris) appeared, mixed with striped sea bream (Lithognathus mormyrus) and sharpsnout sea bream (Diplodus putanzzo). Some of the fish were quite large for their species. Yet, the sheer beauty of the scene kept me from pulling the trigger. I gazed at them in rapture for as long as I could, then surfaced. (6th Picture: Beauty!!!).
"I’ll probably leave with just the grey mullet..." I thought. But I didn't mind, because I had witnessed that magical sight. The good visibility allowed me to perform deeper-than-usual dives, yet the area was devoid of the fish I was after. I hadn't seen a single sea bass, not even a small one. Towards the end of the fishing spot, I saw two bluefish approaching me from a distance. A quick, silent dive, and I waited. Unfortunately, the fish had spotted me, too. So, they kept their distance and watched me. The largest one probably weighed close to two kilos... I surfaced and dove again. The same thing happened: they approached but stayed just out of speargun's range.
"They’re going to drive us crazy... Zac..." I said to myself when I noticed large silhouettes hovering motionless at the edge of the murky water, just off to the side of the two bluefish. "Big mullet, sea bass..." I wondered, but looking more closely—"Tiger tooth croaker (Otolithes ruber) they're tiger tooth croaker ..." I said to myself, and surfaced as quietly as I could. I approached, moving almost imperceptibly. There were about seven or eight of them, a mix of small and large fish. I dove—making the most silent dive of my life—and closed the distance. The fish sensed my presence but held their ground; only a few shifted slightly. As I scanned the area, I spotted one of the largest fish—and it happened to be the closest to me. I focused, aimed for the back of its head, and pulled the trigger. Chaos ensued. The big fish surged and dove for the depths. I held it back to keep it from tangling in the pillars; it tried twice to do just that. Both times I managed to steer it clear easily, pulling it out into open water to avoid any nasty surprises. I brought it close but struggled to subdue it. The tiger tooth croaker fought fiercely until I finally grabbed it by the gills. That was the end of the struggle. My knife took care of the final ritual. It weighed four kilos. (7th Picture: Now we are talking!!!). My shot was good, but it hadn't struck any vital organ. The shot was almost vertical; the spear had entered high up on the back of the neck and exited near its side fins. (8th Picture: Done for today!!!). The tiger tooth croaker put up a fierce fight before finally succumbing. I didn't need to fish any longer, even though I had plenty of time. Thanking the Heavens for Their wonderful gift, I headed for the shore. There, in just thirty centimetres of water, I inadvertently startled a European Spiny spider crab (Maja squinado); panicked, the little crustacean launched attacks at me. (9th Picture: The terrified tough bully!!!). I nearly choked from laughter. Whenever I approached it, it would spread its long claws-pincers and lunged an attack at the camera. As soon as I backed away, it would tuck them close to its body and scurry off. I got the video shots I wanted and let it run off to hide among the pebbles on the seabed.
"If you had a different size, you'd be in big trouble..." I said, and emerged, delighted. (910h Picture: When the Heavens Want to Provide!!!).
