Title: Spearfishing in clear and murky waters #3.

Video & photos : Zacharias Skevofilax.

1st day in the afternoon...

I decided once again to follow the same pattern of fishing. Afternoon in clear waters and at dawn in cloudy waters. So, in the early afternoon I was diving in a leeward area for the souther winds. As soon as I dived in I was in for a surprise. Next to a sunken barrel was a seahorse (Syngnathidae-Hippocampus). As soon as I approached it, it played dead. It was quite big for a seahorse. (1st Picture: A beautiful surprise!!!). I took the video shot and continued my fishing. In the first few dives I only saw small fish. So I decided to change my fishing technique. I started to ambush and then crawling in the sea bed. In one of the many, as I crawled behind a rock, a nice white sea bream (Diplodus sargus) jumped out next to me. The fish was swimming away fast and I didn't have much choice. I aimed and pulled the trigger. The spear catches up with the fish and hit it in the skull, killing it instantly. It is a golden white sea bream of 610 gr. (2nd Picture: The golden beauty!!!). Delighted, I collected the fish... Continuing further and after several dives, I caught the second white sea bream. While crawling among the rocks of the seafloor, I noticed a good white sea bream nibbling behind a rock. Only its tail was visible. I crawled a little closer, without moving the fins, but pulling with my hands and waited. The white sea bream sensed that something was approaching and appeared in front of me, wondering. As soon as it turned and I had a better shot, I pulled the trigger and caught the 2nd white sea bream, which was 450 gr. (3rd Picture: The 2nd white sea bream is caught...). The next ambush was done in a very favourite spot. I had reached where the bottom rocks had formed a large channel. In the past, I had caught/seen some nice fish here. I dived, hid and crawled very slowly. Everywhere I looked there were two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris) . There were many, countless I would say, but all were small or medium in size. (4th Picture: Countless two-banded sea bream... but all small...). I enjoyed their teamwork and left. There wasn't any big fish in this place today... Continuing further down I came across the first grey mullets (Mugil cephalus). As I crawled, I noticed several grey mullets grazing among the rocks on the bottom. As I creeped along, the school of grey mullets, began to swim away. Those nearby were hesitant, but not panicked. Their movement lured one of the bigger ones to approach me from above. I waited and at the right moment I pulled the trigger. From the movement of the fish, I realised that I had managed to hit its spine. The grey mullet was in my lap. (5th Picture: Here is the 1st grey mullet...who knew what would follow!!!). Turning from a small cape to return, I saw several shells piled up.
"Common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) probably, but how big is it???" I wondered. On the first dive I noticed that it was very good. I lowered the power of the speargun and dived. I aimed between its eyes and shot it. I pulled it out easily. It was 2.3 kg. (6th Picture: Plentiful delicatessen!!!).
"Great, let's go out..." I said to myself. Just before I got out and in the very shallows, there was a good salema porgy (Sarpa salpa) swimming by me. The fish didn't disappear when it saw me and that piqued my curiosity. On its back there was a large wound and a little further back two more marks. (7th Picture: The injured one???).
"Maybe a barracuda (Sphyraena sphyraena) did the job..." I thought. I approached slowly and calmly and took it in my hand. I held it for a while to regain its strength and let it go. It seemed to me that it would manage to survive. This incident got me thinking. I decided to go deeper and make some ambushes. In the very first one, many fish came to me. At first I was surrounded by the black Damselfish (Chromis chromis). They were very nervous!!! Then a school of parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense) approached me. I ignored them. A large shoal of spooked grey mullets appeared followed by some good white sea bream that stayed out of range.
"Either the fish got spooked by me or something else is hunting around..." I said to myself. I made some ambushes. In one of them I decided to hide next to a big rock and waited. After a while, a large barracuda appeared. (8th Picture: The big barracuda did not want to come closer...). The fish seemed to me to be +3 kg!!!. As soon as I was hidden by the nearby rock, I quickly turned the speargun but as I was squeezing the trigger, the barracuda moved violently its tale...and disappeared. I dived few more times and got out.
"It does n't matter, at least I found out who has bitten the salema porgy..." I said smiling and went out. I changed and left for the blurry waters. After a long time of driving, I reached the foggy waters. I devoured Stavroula's wonderful delicacies and slipped into the sleeping bag.

Next day at dawn.

My friends informed me too many grey mullets. And so it happened. I got to my favourite place and I did countless ambushes. The grey mullets were everywhere. From the very shallows to the deeper parts, they were everywhere. They were appearing in front of me, swimming throughly the murky waters, wondering what I was doing there. I saw very large grey mullets. Some fish were over three kilos!!! But I was looking for bluefish (Temnodom saltator). I don't remember how many ambushes I did, between the grey mullets. I did not see a single bluefish!! Two hours had passed without seeing even a shadow of a single bluefish. As a result of the countless dives, the very large grey mullets disappeared. I also didn't see a single good sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Only grey mullets were present. So I decided to catch some. I dived next to the pier and waited. It wasn't long before the first fish appeared. I picked the biggest one and shot it. I caught a grey mullet just over a kilo. As I dived below the platform, a slender but long mullet appeared in front of me. I activate immediately the underwater camera and pull the trigger, catching the fish, but missing the video of the shot. It was a 1.7 kg grey mullet. Probably it had laid its eggs recently, that's why it was so thin. (9th Picture: Big but slim, 1.7 kg...). But the fish have gone a little deeper due to the shots. I dived in and waited. After a while some grey mullets hesitantly appeared. I was waiting for someone bigger to approach. After a while a bigger fish appeared and I shot it. The grey mullet fought hard, but after a few minutes was in my arms. It was a little bigger than the last one 1.8 kg!!! (10th Picture: The biggest one, 1.8 kg!!!). I dived few more times, but the fish were spooked. In a dive, a little deeper, a mullet appeared. It looked scared and while it was trying to run away I shot and caught it. It was 1.4 kg.
"We probably scared the fish a lot..." I said and swam for the shallows. I did several ambushes before getting out. In one of them, as I was lying on the bottom and waiting. Suddenly a little further down a small school of grey mullets appeared. I found the biggest one and pulled the trigger. But I saw two flashes in the blur.
"Two fish with a single shot???" I wondered. Pulling the rope close, there were two fish on the spear. (11th Picture: When the lady luck is present!!!).
"Lucky..." I said smiling. In one of the last ambushes in the seaweeds, grey mullets appeared again. But they were small. While I was waiting, a bigger suicidal grey mullet decided to past by me and I shot it. This one was the smaller fish 1.2 kg and I decided to go out. (12th Picture: All the trophies together...). But a gleam in the blur made me dived in one last time. I landed on the bottom and waited. After several seconds small sea bass appeared. They passed in front of me and were followed by grey mullets. I enjoyed their company and went out. I may not have found the bluefish I was looking for, but He provided me with beautiful grey mullets!!!                  (13th Picture: Done for today...).

Spearfishing in clear and murky waters #2 Ψαρευοντας σε καθαρά και θολά νερά Νο 2

You may find this article in English at the end of the Greek version.

Title: Spearfishing in clear and murky waters #2.

Title: Spearfishing in clear and murky waters #2.

Video & photos : Zacharias Skevofilax.

1st day in the afternoon...

I decided to fish with the same pattern as my last fishing expedition. (Read the previous article). Afternoon in clear waters and the next morning in the familiar cloudy waters. Only this time I would start from where I had finished my previous spearfishing expedition. By doing so, I would fish the rest of it. So in the afternoon, I found myself getting dressed at the spot I had planned. As soon as I dived, I saw a dead ocellated wrasse (Symphodus ocellatus) among the rocks. I dived in to see up close what had happened. The poor little fish had been caught on a hook after eating the bait.               (1st Picture: The unlucky one...). The fishing line had being tangled in the rocks, causing the ocellated wrasse to die. I felt sorry for the little fish and moved on. I encountered a Salema porgy (Sarpa salpa) near the surface. I didn't know if it was the same fish as last time. I approached it and finally grabbed it with my hand and let it go, although it didn't seem that it would end-up well. (2nd Picture: The poor thing has problems...). I started the crawling ambushes. In one of them, while I had crawled and I was hidden by a rock, I realised that there were three good white sea bream (Diplodus sargus) to my left. The fish stayed far away. Another white sea bream came closer to see me. It turned sharply, made a circle and nervously approached me again. It did the familiar nervous zig-zags to pass in front, providing me with a big target. I took aim and shot it. The poor fish struggled in vain to escape. The spear had hit it very high in the back without doing much damage. (3rd Picture: The 1st and biggest...). When I realised the outcome of my shot, I rushed and grabbed it. It was 430 gr. Continuing on, in an underwater cliff, I spotted another good white sea bream. I dived and crawled. The fish realised my presence and I lost it in the blue. As I was preparing to emerge, an equally good white sea bream appeared from my left. I gently turned the speargun and at the last moment before it swam away, I pulled the trigger. The spear found the fish in the side and the white sea bream started a frantic swimming trying to get rid of the spear. But in vain, so I caught another 400 gr white sea bream.               (4th Picture: The 2nd one and a bit smaller...). As I was arranging the white sea bream I become aware of the presence of a good common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) under my fins. If I had gone five meters further I would not have seen it. The octopus was stuck on the side of a rock and waited. Easy target. I aimed between its eyes and shot it. Ink filled the area and I dived in and easily got it off the rock. (5th Picture: The two kilos delicacy...). It was 1,900 gr. But I have reached the end of the shallow fishing ground. From here onwards the very deep began. Alone, I didn't want to dive fishing below -30m. So I decided, since I knew the place, I carried on my buoy, the very large speargun. I was planning to do a couple of ambushes a little deeper and then leave. I also removed the back weight and dived. In the first two ambushes I saw nothing. But the bait fish were scared. So I decided for another ambush. I dived as soon as I landed on the bottom the bait fish, mostly black Damselfish (Chromis chromis), came at me, a sign that a predator was approaching. Indeed, after a while, three Bigeye trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus) appeared. They rushed in, stopped, when they realised my presence, they turned to leave, I made a noise. They turned around strangely and when the first one was passing in front of me, I shot it. The spear found its target low in the abdomen. The fish started zig-zagging, doing sharp turns, changing direction in seconds. I just waited, sometimes reeling in and sometimes letting go of the speargun line. After some minutes of agony, I managed to get it in my hands.                 (6th Picture: The predator is caught...). It was 1,100 gr. I decided to turn around and finish my fishing. As I turned to leave, my eyes caught something sitting by the underwater cliff. A little loggerhead turtle (Caretta-caretta) was relaxing and was watching me. I dived close to it. It was gorgeous. Its shell was shiny and brand new. It was indeed beautiful. When I got close enough, this beauty disappeared into the blue at high speed. (7th Picture: Little shiny beauty!!!).
"We did well today... collecting nice experiences too, Zac..." I said to myself and went out. I arranged the fish and after changing, drove several kilometres to reach the spot where I wanted to dive the next morning. There I devoured the wonderful delicacies of Stavroula. Morpheus came quickly and took me in his arms in the warmth of my sleeping bag...

Next day at dawn..

I woke up early at down. It was very cloudy and a north wind breeze was blowing. I decided to go to the abandoned platform and continued where I left off last time. The waters were murky as usual but due to the clouds covering the chosen fishing spot, the sea seemed darker today. As I was approaching the platform, the soft northerly winds had pushed countless Warty comb jelly also known as sea walnut (Mnemiopsis leidyi) in my direction. They were everywhere and infinite in numbers. (8th Picture: They were everywhere!!!). I went under the platform and did a lot of ambushes. There were many, many, and large grey mullets (Mugil cephalus). Fish come from everywhere and pass by me. Undaunted, I just admire them.
"We didn't come here for grey mullets Zac..." I reminded myself. In one of the ambushes, while there were mullets around, I spotted a good bluefish (Temnodom saltator). The fish was getting ready to swim away and by the time I pulled the trigger, it hit its tail violently and I missed it.
"Too late..." I said to myself. Trying to be sure for the shot, I was too late and the bluefish realised my presence and disappeared the time I was pulling the trigger.
"Never mind... let's continue..." I thought. I did a lot of ambushing, but saw nothing else but grey mullets. I left the platform and continued with my ambushes. Grey mullets came my way in one of them. After making sure they weren't being followed by anything bigger, I aimed and caught one of the bigger ones, which was of a kilo. (9th Picture: The grey mullet is caught...). Continuing my ambushes in the darkness, I barely saw the silhouette of a grey mullet. Watching the mullet as it passed by, I realised that it was being followed by a large sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)Before I know it, the bass had passed in front of me and was about to disappear into the murky waters. Instinctively I aimed and pulled the trigger. The sea bass disappeared in the murky waters, but along with the unwinding of the reel, which almost whistles from the unwinding speed of the rope. Not knowing how good was my shot, I followed the fish until it got tired, without resisting at all. After some time, that looked aeons, I had it in my arms. (10th Picture: At last!!! Now we are talking!!!). Seeing my shot, I was speechless. Heavens wanted to give me this sea bass. Such a bad shot and to keep such a big fish??? The fish was held on the spear by the skin of its back. It was 3.2 kilos!!! With it in my arms I went out without fishing any more even though I had a lot of time at my disposal. I went out, took the photos I wanted, without being seen and I cleaned the fish. As I was about to leave, something wonderful caught my eye. A yellow flower had grown among the stones of the beach!!! (11th Picture: Done or today!!!).       (12th Picture: NC !!!)
"The majesty of Nature!!!" I thought. Beauty is spread everywhere, as long as one looks in the right direction. How many times everyday we pass by such beauties without noticing them, thus losing the essence of what Life means!!!

Spearfishing in clear and murky waters #1 Ψαρευοντας σε καθαρά και θολά νερά Νο 1

Title: Spearfishing in clear and murky waters #1.

Title: Spearfishing in clear and murky waters #1.

Video & photos : Zacharias Skevofilax.

1st day in the afternoon...

Since I had the time, I decided, for a two-day fishing trip. It wouldn't be two days exactly, but an afternoon dive and the next morning the second dive. But this time I would change fishing spots. I intended to fish in the clear waters and the next day, in my favourite cloudy ones. Both days I would be fishing the shallows. I prepared my diving gears and noon found me driving to the designated fishing spot. I arrived, got dressed and dived. A nice surprise awaited me when I entered the sea. Next to me was a loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta)(1st Picture: A wonderful surprise!!!). I forgot all about fishing and approached the turtle. However, it did not accept me and as soon as I approached it, the turtle swam away. It made a sharp turn, stopped, looked at me and then disappeared into the blue.
"We're off to a good start, Zac....Let's start fishing ...,." I said smiling to myself. I did some ambushes but I didn't see anything I wanted to catch. In an ambush, nothing appeared again and I decided to crawl to the next rock. Having the cover of the rock I crept closer and took a sneak peek. Two good white sea bream (Diplodus sargus) were swimming around. They had sensed my presence, but they didn't know what I was. The one in front came closer but also kept some distance. But it made the mistake and had entered the opium range of speargun. As soon as it showed me its full size, I took aim and pulled the trigger. The white sea bream swerved to avoid the spear, but the spear skewered it and just fell to the sea floor. (2nd Picture: The 1st fish of the day...). Delighted, I collected the spear with the first trophy of the day. It was a 400 gr white sea bream. The next few ambushes ended up crawling. So in one of the following ambushes, I found that among the white sea breams, there was also a good quilt head sea bream (Sparus aurata). The fish broke away from the school of white sea breams and swam to the left. The rock was covering me, so I crawled towards the quilt head sea bream. But the rock ended and I was exposed. I hid as best I could. The fish came closer, but as soon as it noticed me it turned before getting in range and I lost it.
"It's okay let's go on..." I said to myself. After a few ambushes, as I was crawling on the sea bed, I noticed a larger quilt head sea bream swimming and nibbling on the bottom. The fish disappeared behind a rock. Immediately I dived. I crawled to the bottom among the rocks. I stopped, looked around saw the fish coming towards me. I made the mistake of correcting my aim and the quilt head sea bream turned and I lost it too!!! (3rd Picture: Unfortunately it's gone...)
"You shouldn't have moved, let the fish get close and then we'll see what to do..." I said to myself angrily.... Continuing the ambushes, I noticed a small red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) was swimming around me. The small fish swam in front of me, giving me the opportunity to admire its wonderful colours. (4th Picture: It almost pinned itself to the spear!!!). The little fish almost run itself to the spear in its curiosity to see what I am. When it realised my presence it turned sharply, but I didn't go very far!!! In the next dive, I hid behind the rocks and waited for the white sea breams I'd seen. The smaller ones approached first. The leading fish came very close. I didn't bother it, and that probably gave the elders courage to approach. The one I wanted approached me, turned in full glory and the moment I pressed the trigger it turned sharply to avoid the spear. But in vain and thus I caught another 400 gr white sea bream. (5th Picture: ...and the 2nd white sea bream...). In one of the last ambushes, I crawled between the rocks, trying to reach the end of the cliff. From various openings I was observing the environment. As I approached the end of the rock, I saw through an opening, that a quilt head sea bream was swimming on my left. From the direction that the fish had, it would pass in front of me and probably didn't realise me. I stopped and waited, hidden. Indeed, the quilt head sea bream carelessly passed in front of me and I shot it in the center just to be sure. (6th Picture: The winter queen had been caught!!!). A battle began which had only one outcome: the winter queen in my arms. At last, I had caught a kilo winter queen. That was the end of my afternoon fishing. Swimming to get out, I saw a Salema porgy (Sarpa salpa) not in its best shape. Approached it, and almost grabbed it with the hand. It was very thin, a sign that it was not feeding properly...

Next day at dawn...

Damn the next day, found my many miles away, waking up in my car. It was quite cold as there was a light northerly wind blowing... With yesterday's wet diving suit, the cold seemed more bitter. But who cared. I got dressed and quickly dived. Mrs. Blur was present as usual. In some places, you could cut the blur with a knife!!! I took a deep breath and dived. A frozen blur was spread everywhere...
"Be patient and persistent..." I advised myself who was about to give up. The seconds were ticking by, when a nice grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) with suicidal tendencies appeared from my right and behind. The fish came from behind me, passed in front of me, to see me. I just pulled the trigger.        (7th Picture: The 1st grey mullet of the day...). After few seconds I had a 1.5 kg grey mullet in my hands. I had reached the old platform. I did an ambush just outside. I saw a grey mullet in distance while another was lost in the blur. As I turned around the pillar I was holding, I saw a lonely grey mullet staring at me I could say. I shot it and caught another 1.5kg fish.        (8th Picture: The 2nd one of the day...). I went under the old platform, swam and then dived. I dived and grabbed a pillar and waited. After a while, grey mullets, big grey mullets, appear through the blur and from all directions. The fish were coming at me, but I stood firm in my decision: No shooting grey mullets if they were in groups. I was just staring them in ecstasy. I made a few more ambushes with the same result. But in a moment things changed. Probably the many ambushes attracted the attention of three large bluefish (Temnodom saltator). The leading large bluefish passed in front of me and even slowed down. I couldn't expect for anything better. I took aim and pulled the trigger, aiming for its spine. The heavily wounded bluefish sank behind the next pillar. I ignored everything and dived onto the sinking fish. (9th Picture: Now we are talking and it's a big one!!!). I caught the big bluefish and after giving it a quick finish I showered it with kisses and apologies. It was one of the biggest bluefish I had ever caught. It weighed 6.3 kg and its stomach was completely empty. If he had eaten even one of the grey mullets that were around, I would had set a new record. The biggest I've ever caught was 6.5kg. I embraced it, thanking the Heavens for their wonderful gift. I didn't fish at all. But the Universe had a different opinion. In less than 50cm, there was a common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis), smaller than my thumb.                   (10th Picture: It was very small...). I shot the video I wanted and got away from the little cuttlefish before it had a heart attack. I got in the car and drove to a deserted beach where I took the pictures and cleaned the fish...              (11th Picture: Nice ending!!!).
