Title: Spearfishing in clear and murky waters #1.

Title: Spearfishing in clear and murky waters #1.
Video & photos : Zacharias Skevofilax.
Since I had the time, I decided, for a two-day fishing trip. It wouldn't be two days exactly, but an afternoon dive and the next morning the second dive. But this time I would change fishing spots. I intended to fish in the clear waters and the next day, in my favourite cloudy ones. Both days I would be fishing the shallows. I prepared my diving gears and noon found me driving to the designated fishing spot. I arrived, got dressed and dived. A nice surprise awaited me when I entered the sea. Next to me was a loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta). (1st Picture: A wonderful surprise!!!). I forgot all about fishing and approached the turtle. However, it did not accept me and as soon as I approached it, the turtle swam away. It made a sharp turn, stopped, looked at me and then disappeared into the blue.
"We're off to a good start, Zac....Let's start fishing ...,." I said smiling to myself. I did some ambushes but I didn't see anything I wanted to catch. In an ambush, nothing appeared again and I decided to crawl to the next rock. Having the cover of the rock I crept closer and took a sneak peek. Two good white sea bream (Diplodus sargus) were swimming around. They had sensed my presence, but they didn't know what I was. The one in front came closer but also kept some distance. But it made the mistake and had entered the opium range of speargun. As soon as it showed me its full size, I took aim and pulled the trigger. The white sea bream swerved to avoid the spear, but the spear skewered it and just fell to the sea floor. (2nd Picture: The 1st fish of the day...). Delighted, I collected the spear with the first trophy of the day. It was a 400 gr white sea bream. The next few ambushes ended up crawling. So in one of the following ambushes, I found that among the white sea breams, there was also a good quilt head sea bream (Sparus aurata). The fish broke away from the school of white sea breams and swam to the left. The rock was covering me, so I crawled towards the quilt head sea bream. But the rock ended and I was exposed. I hid as best I could. The fish came closer, but as soon as it noticed me it turned before getting in range and I lost it.
"It's okay let's go on..." I said to myself. After a few ambushes, as I was crawling on the sea bed, I noticed a larger quilt head sea bream swimming and nibbling on the bottom. The fish disappeared behind a rock. Immediately I dived. I crawled to the bottom among the rocks. I stopped, looked around saw the fish coming towards me. I made the mistake of correcting my aim and the quilt head sea bream turned and I lost it too!!! (3rd Picture: Unfortunately it's gone...).
"You shouldn't have moved, let the fish get close and then we'll see what to do..." I said to myself angrily.... Continuing the ambushes, I noticed a small red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) was swimming around me. The small fish swam in front of me, giving me the opportunity to admire its wonderful colours. (4th Picture: It almost pinned itself to the spear!!!). The little fish almost run itself to the spear in its curiosity to see what I am. When it realised my presence it turned sharply, but I didn't go very far!!! In the next dive, I hid behind the rocks and waited for the white sea breams I'd seen. The smaller ones approached first. The leading fish came very close. I didn't bother it, and that probably gave the elders courage to approach. The one I wanted approached me, turned in full glory and the moment I pressed the trigger it turned sharply to avoid the spear. But in vain and thus I caught another 400 gr white sea bream. (5th Picture: ...and the 2nd white sea bream...). In one of the last ambushes, I crawled between the rocks, trying to reach the end of the cliff. From various openings I was observing the environment. As I approached the end of the rock, I saw through an opening, that a quilt head sea bream was swimming on my left. From the direction that the fish had, it would pass in front of me and probably didn't realise me. I stopped and waited, hidden. Indeed, the quilt head sea bream carelessly passed in front of me and I shot it in the center just to be sure. (6th Picture: The winter queen had been caught!!!). A battle began which had only one outcome: the winter queen in my arms. At last, I had caught a kilo winter queen. That was the end of my afternoon fishing. Swimming to get out, I saw a Salema porgy (Sarpa salpa) not in its best shape. Approached it, and almost grabbed it with the hand. It was very thin, a sign that it was not feeding properly...
Next day at dawn...
Damn the next day, found my many miles away, waking up in my car. It was quite cold as there was a light northerly wind blowing... With yesterday's wet diving suit, the cold seemed more bitter. But who cared. I got dressed and quickly dived. Mrs. Blur was present as usual. In some places, you could cut the blur with a knife!!! I took a deep breath and dived. A frozen blur was spread everywhere...
"Be patient and persistent..." I advised myself who was about to give up. The seconds were ticking by, when a nice grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) with suicidal tendencies appeared from my right and behind. The fish came from behind me, passed in front of me, to see me. I just pulled the trigger. (7th Picture: The 1st grey mullet of the day...). After few seconds I had a 1.5 kg grey mullet in my hands. I had reached the old platform. I did an ambush just outside. I saw a grey mullet in distance while another was lost in the blur. As I turned around the pillar I was holding, I saw a lonely grey mullet staring at me I could say. I shot it and caught another 1.5kg fish. (8th Picture: The 2nd one of the day...). I went under the old platform, swam and then dived. I dived and grabbed a pillar and waited. After a while, grey mullets, big grey mullets, appear through the blur and from all directions. The fish were coming at me, but I stood firm in my decision: No shooting grey mullets if they were in groups. I was just staring them in ecstasy. I made a few more ambushes with the same result. But in a moment things changed. Probably the many ambushes attracted the attention of three large bluefish (Temnodom saltator). The leading large bluefish passed in front of me and even slowed down. I couldn't expect for anything better. I took aim and pulled the trigger, aiming for its spine. The heavily wounded bluefish sank behind the next pillar. I ignored everything and dived onto the sinking fish. (9th Picture: Now we are talking and it's a big one!!!). I caught the big bluefish and after giving it a quick finish I showered it with kisses and apologies. It was one of the biggest bluefish I had ever caught. It weighed 6.3 kg and its stomach was completely empty. If he had eaten even one of the grey mullets that were around, I would had set a new record. The biggest I've ever caught was 6.5kg. I embraced it, thanking the Heavens for their wonderful gift. I didn't fish at all. But the Universe had a different opinion. In less than 50cm, there was a common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis), smaller than my thumb. (10th Picture: It was very small...). I shot the video I wanted and got away from the little cuttlefish before it had a heart attack. I got in the car and drove to a deserted beach where I took the pictures and cleaned the fish... (11th Picture: Nice ending!!!).
