Title: The cracking cormorant, sea basses and the cuddly ocellated wrasse.

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

The last weekend that fishing was allowed (the ban of May was approaching), I loaded everything and drove away for an all-day spearfishing expedition within the prefecture of Attica. The coronavirus has invaded our lives for good, along with the paranoia that follows it... Among other things, amateur fishing was banned for a long time so as not to spread the virus, even tough most of the times we are fishing alone. Otherwise it does not spread through the crowds in public transportation, supermarkets, schools, etc.
So after some driving time I got where I wanted, got ready and dived. In one of my many ambushes, I landed once more on some eelgrass bed (Zostera marina) and waited. The waters are very cloudy with ripples, while the seconds were passing torturously slowly without me seeing the slightest movement of a fish.
"Ideal conditions? For sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)..." I thought .... "but where are the fish???"
Once more I was wrong. I felt that something was around and looking at me. I gently turned my head and saw countless eyes looking ecstatically at me. After a while I was overwhelmed by countless fish (of unknown identity) the largest of which did not exceed two centimetres. Everywhere I looked, my lilliputian friends were present in huge numbers. The herd came in front of me hesitantly at first, but remained around me..                1st Picture: (The new generation)!!!
"Nature's greatness.... the new generation is surrounding me ...." I thought smiling. These teeny-tiny fish came to see me and maybe found shelter, since I was too big to attack them. They left when I ran out of air and I had to emerge. A little further down something different that caught my attention. As I approached a rock that was just above the sea level, I noticed that a great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) was sunbathing on the rock. I approached it as calmly and slowly as I could. The bird had seen me, but my inconceivably slow speed had confused it and it did not know what to do. To stay or to leave ??? I was just under the rock and approached the bird even closer with the underwater camera, for a better video shot. 2nd Picture: (The puzzled cormorant...). The bewildered cormorant retreated but at the same time made several fake attacks on me, making hoarse screams that were barely audible. I was about to swallow water out of laughter. These "attacks" happened 5-6 times. When it realised that I was not afraid of his seemingly dangerous attacks, it took off for other sea shores... It took me some time to recover from the laughter and then started my ambushes. In my second ambush two nice mullets (Mugil cephalus) appeared on my right. The closer one made the mistake of passing in front of me and so I caught my first fish (1.100 gr). I did not see much in the shallows. So I decided to dive a little deeper. I took a deep breath and dived. I landed among some large rocks and waited. Several small fish appeared, but I was looking for something bigger. At some point I saw a large school of mullets. But the fish were swimming much higher than my position. When I realised their presence, they had already passed-by me. I aimed one of the bigger ones and pulled the trigger. Knowing that was a lousy shot, I did not put any pressure at all to the fishing line. When the fish swam away, I loosened my grip and when it stoped, I pulled it close to me. This happened several times until I managed to catch the fish by its tail. My shot really sucked. The fish was caught by a piece of skin low in its abdomen. If I had fought it even for a second, I would definitely had lost it. Finally I managed to catch the second and largest mullet (1.800 gr). I needed for the sashimi I wanted to make. (The recipe will be found at the end of the video of this article).3rd Picture:(The biggest mullet...)
"No more mullets today... I have enough in order to fix the sashimi..." I said to myself. I have noticed whenever I have decided accordingly, it seemed the fish knew my decision and parade in-front of me. This also happened in this fishing expedition... While I was swimming next to a rock, a nice mullet came towards me. The mullet almost touched the tip of the spear. I smiled and let it swam away. I swam for a while, dived and waited. I was hiding in a big crevice on the seabed. Ideal hiding place, since I was covered from all the sides. I was waiting for something good to appear, while enjoying the company of Mediterranean rainbow wrasse (Coris julis) and black damselfish (Chromis chromis) that were floating in mid waters. Every now and then a painted comber (Serranus scriba) was joining our company. As I was about to finish another unsuccessful ambush, I realised that a silhouette was approaching for far away. Fortunately I could move without my target being able to see me. It was a good size sea bass but was swimming at the limit of the range of the speargun. I turned the speargun and waited for the right moment. Seeing that the sea bass was not intended to change direction and soon it would be out of range, I aimed, as best I could and pulled the trigger. Everything was lost behind a rock.
"Obviously we missed Zac..." I thought and swam bored to pick up my spear. As I reached the rock, where the spear was lost from my vision, I saw a sea bass fighting. The shot, due to the distance, was low in the belly of the fish and there was a great probability to free it self, as the fish continued fighting. I rushed and caught it. It was a sea bass off 1.350 gr. Hugs, kisses and happily continued my fishing. But it was time to change fishing ground. 4th Picture: (The 1st & lucky sea bass...).
So, I went to a fishing place where there were more waves and the sea was much more cloudy. The sea was quite colder than the previous fishing ground, 14οC. I started my ambushes. After a few ambushes, the first sea bass appeared. Small fish, full of curiosity came to see me. They swam and as they pass in front of me they make a quick stop to take a closer look at me and then disappeared into the murky waters. After a few seconds, they reappeared following same pattern once more. I smiled at them and wondered where their parents were. In the next ambush the same happened. But as the small ones passed in front of me, the last sea bass was bigger and darker than the rest. It followed the little ones while swimming close to the bottom, almost crawling on the muddy bottom I could say. It tried to pass undetected in front of me, but unfortunately I had seen it and I pulled the trigger. The spear almost in contact found the sea wolf on its neck and the battle began. After a while I had another wonderful sea bass in my arms (1.500 gr). I placed it on my buoy and continued. 5th Picture: (The 2nd of the day...),  In the next ambush, the sea basses came back to me. Most were small and some were medium size fish. But the fish were very nervous, due to of the previous shot. They appeared in the blur with speed and I managed just to see them. I noticed some flashes from their silver bodies as they swam away. But there was a bigger one among them, but due to the blur I always realised its presence too late. As time passed, the sea bass calmed down and swam in front of me at a very slow speed. I kept waiting for the bigger one to return. Indeed, after a while it appeared next to me and to my right. It had approached so close that I could not shoot it. It tried to pass under the speargun. I moved the speargun trying to stop it and to change direction. But it managed and swam under the speargun. Then turned to leave making the mistake and passed in front of the speargun and I just pulled the trigger, catching another sea bass of 1.300 gr. 6th Picture: (It wanted to pass under the speargun!!!).
"Well done... let's continue...." I thought smiling. I swam further way, because I was sure the fish would be very nervous. I decided to dive a little deeper to see what was going on. I got to -7.2 m without seeing much. The seconds passed and I did not see anything literally. The water was so cloudy... At some point I noticed a shadow was passing by. I instinctively aimed and pulled the trigger. A silver figure fought for a few fractions of a second before it was disappeared into the murky waters. I reeled in the rope and caught another sea bass. It was the smallest of all so far (1.100 gr). I decided that it was enough for today and I swam towards the shore.... fishing. I landed on the muddy bottom and in less than 30 seconds, a good size sea bass appeared in front of me. I was so sure about my shot... I missed it !!! I missed the biggest fish of the day, in a very easy shot. I missed, as always happened, when I am so sure!!! I was angry with myself, not because I missed the fish, but because I did not show the appropriate humility, the appropriate respect for what I love so much. I went to the shallows to rest, to concentrate. After a while I dived again in the same place. I landed on the muddy bottom and I was waiting full of curiosity...
"Let's see if something good will come after the fuss made by my missed shot ???" I wondered. About 30 seconds had passed and two of the same size sea basses came to see me. I aimed the closest one and pulled the trigger. The spear stroke the fish in its neck, it made a somersault and landed on the muddy bottom motionless. The perfect shot !!! Its white belly was as if illuminating this hazy and dark landscape. Today's fishing ended there. It was also the largest fish of the day (1.650 gr).              7th Picture: (The biggest sea bass...). A great fishing expedition was over... or I thought so. I approached the beach to go out, but a movement caught my eye sight. There in the depth of 50 centimetre a small green ocellated wrasse (Symphodus ocellatus) was playing dead. As I approached it with my glove, it jumped up and went a little further. It hid or rather thought that it was hiding among the short and sparse eelgrass, bending its tiny body. The second time I approached it, the small fish did not move at all. Surprised by this behaviour, I slowly approached and touched it. The small fish remained motionless!!! 8th Picture: (The cuddly ocellated wrasse!!!). I decided to caress it as gently as I could. It did not move at all !!! I decided to caress it again as gently as I could. It did not move at all. I continued to caress it. The lilliputian creature remained motionless. When I picked it up gently, it went to hide behind some short eelgrass. After stroking it a little more, I let it to think that it had fooled me and went out. It was an incredible experience !!! It was one of the most wonderful experiences that underwater fishing had given me....
I carefully went out avoiding the passing-by people, got dressed and hit the road back home before the absurd traffic ban started !!!

You may find this article in English at the end of the Greek version.

Title: When everything goes perfectly!!!

Title: When everything goes perfectly!!!

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

How many times had I gone spearfishing and missed to catch a fish that I should not??? Many times, countless I could say. This story was dedicated to that fishing expedition, where everything went incredibly well, perfect!!!
Winter morning awakening... what an originality... The quilt was heavy and very warm. How to get up??? The wind was howling outside and the bed looked soooo attractive. I literally dragged and threw myself out of bed.
"Get up lazy bum, let's go for a swim in the idyllic icy and cloudy waters!!!" I got up very bored and almost returned to my bed again.... Knowing that I might be looking for an excuse not to go spearfishing at dawn, I had loaded all the fishing gear in my car from the previous day.... After about two hours of driving, I had reached where I wanted to fish. I was wondering how should I wear my fishing gear in the cold and rainy morning??? Thinking about how far I had driven, I got the courage and went out of the car. The north wind hit me in to face and woke me up abruptly. I did not realised how fast I got dressed!!! I dived into the icy waters and my favourite Madam blur embraced me. My diving watch showed 13ο C!!! I started my ambushes, but only the lady blur was around. Even the small mullets (Mugil cephalus) were absent. Disappointed, I continued my ambushes and swam further down. The same s@@t and even worse. Nothing anywhere.
"There are waves, the sea waters are blurry and cold but not a single sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)???" I said to myself in astonishment. I went a little deeper and landed on the seaweeds. While I was waiting, I noticed a good size common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) started swimming away from me. If I did not follow it, I would definitely lose it in the blur. I began to follow it. It spitted ink in the middle waters and sat on the sandy bottom. If I had not seen it landing, I could easily have followed the cloud of ink and definitely I would lose it. I aimed and caught an octopus close to two kilos (1,800 gr.). If it hadn't moved, I'm sure I wouldn't have seen it. It was probably hidden in the same seaweeds that I was ambushing and my presence scared it and swam away, unfortunately for the octopus. As soon as I grabbed it, I realised that it had caught a small spiny spider crab (Maja squinado). It had sucked all the flesh, leaving the crab shell completely empty. (1st picture: The delicacy is caught...). I hung it on my buoy and continued. In one of my last ambushes, I realised that there was something on my right. I turned slowly and saw what I longed for. But it was a sea bass about a kilo. The fish passed lazily in front of me, looked at me surprised, until it disappeared into the blurry waters. I asked it where he was the rest of its family, but I got no answer. I asked it about its mother or father, but it never answered my question and disappeared into the murky waters...(2nd picture: The little one...). I decided to return and get out. As I was going back, I was diving in places that I happened to pass. In one of them, I landed on the bottom and waited. Short seaweeds and pebbles was covering the seafloor. I dived and waited maybe...
"The Almighty is testing me, it can't be explained otherwise... Everything is perfect, but where are the sea bass?" I wondered. I kept waiting.... when something shone and passed me, coming from my right. I managed to see two fish disappearing in the murky waters. Fortunately the speargun was aiming towards the right direction. Instinctively I aimed and pulled the trigger. I did not know what I had achieved when I saw the shine from the sea bass's body in the blur. The spear had achieved its goal, but I did not know where the spear hit the fish. I pulled towards me the sea bass which was fighting hard. I dived on the fish and brought it in my arms. The spear had found its target in the neck and came out of its cheek. Luckily I use a spear with two flaps, because one flap was closed and the fish was held only by the other flap. I expected to catch a fish a little over a kilo, but when I brought it in my hands, I found that it was a 2.5 kg sea bass!!! (3rd picture: 2.5 kilos...Now we are talking!!!). I happily took it in my arms, kissed it countless times and hung it on the buoy along with the octopus. Lady luck was smiling at me for the second time today!!!
"This is what The Almighty wanted to give me... With such a shot...got this result..." I thought. I passed the cape and swam to the beach from where I had started. The small cape was stopping the waves and something caught my attention. On a buoy and its ropes, were three bundles of common squid eggs (Loligo vulgaris). I approached carefully to get the video I wanted. I could see the little eggs, like white balls side by side. The new generation was getting ready...(4th picture: The new generation of common squid...)
"Look at the greatness of Nature... How many times we have no idea what is going on, while Life pulsates around us..." I thought and swam away carefully. I was getting ready to go out, but there at half a meter deep, Nature had two other surprises for me. I saw a common elbow crab (Parthenope longimanus) of the sand that has folded the two large (for its size) claws. (5th picture: The long elbow crab...) I approached it to get my video shot as close as I could. Since it let me, I grabbed it gently, to show its size and left it on the sand. The literature states that this species of crab has arrived in the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal. It can find as far as Singapore !!!
I did not go far, when among the short seaweeds, there was teeny-tiny sea robin (Chelidonichthys spinosus), at most two centimetres long!!! This lilliputian creature, got so much scared as I approached it... I decided not to stress it anymore and so I went out. (6th picture: The terrified lilliputian sea robin...)
Basically my fishing expedition had gone very well so far, taking into consideration that I had not seen much. I got in the car and drove a little further down. I dived immediately, but I met the same conditions. Cloudy and cold waters. But there were a lot of stones in this fishing ground and that made the water a little clearer. At the first ambush I landed among some stones and waited. The seconds were passing and I waited bored. A lonely mullet came from behind me, passed me and continued for the deeper waters. I did not expect anything better and I shot it, catching a mullet about a kilo (1,100 gr.). I continued the ambushes, but I saw only small fish. Ambush after ambush the hours passed and the fishing expedition was coming to an end. In the next ambush, due to the blurry waters I did not land in a good spot. So I decided to crawl in order to find a better spot and waited. A minute had passed when a school of five mullets appeared to my right. I did not expect anything better to appear, so I aimed at the biggest fish and caught another mullet about a kilo. I ambushed two - three times more and decided for one more ambush, before I went out. I chose a place I liked and dived. I landed between some stones and waited. Some medium size parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense) passed by and some good size two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris) swam away for the deeper waters. A minute has passed by, without seeing anything big. I crawled forward and waited. I saw again good size two-banded sea bream but I did not deal with. I was looking for something bigger. I knew the place well and that it holds good size fish. I continued waiting..... At some point I realised a good size quilt-head (sea) bream (Sparus aurata) on my left but far away. The fish appeared among some stones and continued to nibble the rocks. Apparently it had not realised my presence. It would be a very far shot for the 82cm speargun I was holding. I pulled with my hands to get as close as I could, but I realised that I was no longer covered by the rocks and the fish, although far away, it was a matter of seconds to perceive my presence. I aimed as best as I could and pulled the trigger. The shot was marginal, but the spear hit its target and the sea bream began to fight with great force. Not knowing how good was my shot, I rushed over the fish. I realised that the fish was just hanging from the spear, which was almost entirely out of the fish.(7th picture: The gift of 1.350 gr.!!!) I grabbed the quilt-head (sea) bream and caught it from its gills. The fish continued to fight but it was too late now. Looking closer, I noticed that the spear hit this wonderful fish under the left wing of its belly. But the spear was stuck up to the dowel pin, while both flaps of the spear were closed and were outside of the flesh of the fish!!!. The dowel pin was the only reason that held the fish that was weighted 1,350 gr. I could not believe what I was seeing!!!. (Later when I was cleaning the fish, I found out that the fish had no major wound, and if I did not know where the shot was, I would not be able to find the wound!!!
"This fish also was Given by the Almighty!!!" I thought and thanking the Heavens for their wonderful gift I went out. We ate the quilt-head (sea) bream a few days later with the best company I could find !!! (Stavroula and Sofia). (8th picture: The biggest one...)

Title: Meeting again the sea-turtle with special needs!!!

Title: Meeting again the sea-turtle with special needs!!!

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

I started early in the morning for another lonely fishing. The north wind was holding well and it was quite cold. I arrived where I wanted to spearfish, got dressed and dived with great longing. Of course, due to the weather, the blur was present accompanied with cold sea waters. In the very first ambush, a large herd of bogue (Boops boops) approached me from behind. Usually the small fish were staying around me, staring at me in amazement, until I was emerging. But this school of fish did not stop and continued to swim towards a certain direction. (1st picture: The panicked bogues...) I turned around but saw nothing. I emerged immediately, took a deep breath and dived towards the opposite direction from where the small fish were gone. It was the second ambush and in less than a minute, two shadows appeared in the blurry waters. They were two sea-basses (Dicentrarchus labrax) and they swam in front of me like ghosts emerging through the murky waters. The fish came curiously to see the strange creature lying motionless in front of them. The first one seemed to be a little smaller. The second was much larger. But how big it was??? In blurry waters, I had made many mistakes by catching small fish that seemed bigger. So I waited a bit in order not to make another mistake once more. The fish stood in front of me showing its entire body. I realised that it was big enough, I aimed and pulled the trigger. The sea-bass tried to leave but... I gladly got into my arms the 1.4 kilos of sea-bass, thanking the Heavens for their unexpected and quick gift.          (2nd picture: The sea-bass was caught...). I continued my ambushes without the corresponding success. At some point and while I am at the abyssal depth of three meters, I realise that a big common eagle ray (Myliobatis aquila) was swimming even shallower. The fish passed fearlessly without giving me the slightest attention, no matter what tricks I pulled off my sleeve. I did not want to shoot it, I just wished to video its passing, but... I lost this amazing creature in the blur and I never saw the amazing eagle ray again. In an ambush later on and while I was lying on seaweeds, a school of middle size mullets (Mugil cephalus) approached me. The fish did not seem to realised my presence. They nibbled the sandy bottom and the whole school passed in front of me. I hid in the seaweeds, just observing them. They were not very big, but the sea-bass I had caught, made me wonder if another sea-bass was around. Unfortunately the only sea-basses I saw were very small. In another ambush and while I was expecting for any fish to appear on my left, I felt that something was approaching me from behind and to my right. I turned around and saw that two very large mullets were leaving. I aimed the nearest one and when it turned to leave for the deep, I pulled the trigger. The spear stoke the mullet and passed it like a skewer. The fish, unable to swim and pushed by the momentum of the spear, simply dropped on the sea floor. (3rd picture: Literally at the last moment...). I happily picked up the 1.5 kg mullet and continued my fishing. On the very next dive and while I did not see anything on the horizon, I felt a different presence on my right and a little deeper. I turned around and swam towards it. It was a Mediterranean sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus)  with white thorns. It looked like a white-haired man that was wearing a seaweed as a scarf and for a hat, a half quince. I lifted it to see it but the hat fell off. I gently put it back in its place and put on its hat.... in order not catch a cold, which would be not so nice!!! (4th picture: The white-haired sea urchin!!!). A little further down, in another ambush, while waiting for a passing fish, I realised that a fish was approaching from my right. It was almost invisible and the dark sky helped it not to be seen even more. I turned the speargun towards the incoming fish and waited. It ended up being a small sea-bass. It was about a kilo, came very close, stopped in front of the spear, turned and swam lazily away.
"You are lucky that you are smaller than I wanted..." I thought and let it swam away. Ambush after ambush I did not find anything worthwhile and decided to go out. But something was telling me to go a little deeper. I decided to listen to my inner voice and full of curiosity, swam to deeper waters.
"Let's see what is in the deeper waters...." I did not have time to finish my thought and then I saw it. It was a loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta-caretta). But it was not just any sea turtle. It was my old, injured friend who was missing its front left fin. I had seen it two months ago and I had described it in my article at the end of November!!! (5th picture: A dear old friend!!!). I dived and approached it several times, but I always stayed away from it. This time I did not see any bubbles coming out of its wound. It also swam much more comfortably and had gained some weight. Its tail was thicker and the general feeling was that the sea turtle was doing very well. After few dives the sea turtle accepted my presence and was not afraid any more. I approached it and on the second dive near it, I petted gently on its neck. I was glad to see my old friend healthy again and went out. I drove a few kilometres down. But the beach was quite crowded and so I decided to leave the camouflage I wear on my head so as not to catch people's attention. I went to a corner and dived as quietly as I could. I had not swum five meters and in front of me was a nice goatfish (Mullus surmuletus). I aimed and caught it. As I had it in my hands, I find out that it was carrying two sea lice (Caligidae) on its body. A big and a small one. Even though I was in a different fishing place, there was a high probability that it was the same goatfish that I described in the article at the end of January???. At my next ambush a school of medium parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense) approached  me, but the biggest one knew to keep the necessary distances in order to be on the safe side. As the seconds were passing by, some big mullets appeared. I aimed one of the largest one and caught a 1.4 kg fish.
(6th picture: The second mullet of the day...).
"Enough with the mullets today.... Let' s try to catch something else.... if He wants to Give it to us ..." I said to myself. It was as if the mullets read my thoughts and immediately paraded in front of me. I could have caught 3-4 more mullets if I wanted to. I insisted on something better. In an ambush and while I was well hidden among some stones, I could see the silhouette of a beautiful white sea-bream (Diplodus sargus). The fish was over half a kilo and it was swimming towards me. I aimed it, but I did not pull the trigger.
"Anyway, let's move on..." I thought. But I was approaching the end of the fishing ground and the chances for "something better" were greatly reduced. So I went to a place I knew well and decided to make 2-3 ambushes before I got out. I dived and landed next to a big rock. As the seconds went by, a flock of small two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris) appeared to my left. While looking at the fish, I realised that a good gilt-head (sea) bream (Sparus aurata) was following them, without realising my presence. For some tenths of a second I lost my focus. Luckily I got it back quickly, aimed and pulled the trigger. The spear achieved its goal and the gilt-head (sea) bream puzzled, sat on the sandy bottom. Holding the speargun with the underwater camera on, I swam towards the fish. When it saw me, it started swimming like crazy, but it was too late. (7th picture: The winter queen was caught!!!). I took the wonderful gift in my arms and thanking the Heavens, I went out, avoiding any one on the sea shore. At home, I took the necessary pictures with all the fish together.
P.S. The gilt-head (sea) bream weighted 1.2 kilos!!!

You may find this article in English at the end of the Greek version.

Title: Theodore's fishing ground....

Title: Theodore's fishing ground....

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

(1st Picture: Theodore & I...)
"Good evening Theodore, how are you ???" I asked him on the phone.
"Fine Zac, how are you doing?" he answered me.
"I am OK, are you going to take the day off tomorrow as you told me or not ???" I asked curiously.
"Unfortunately I have to go to work Zac, so I can not go for a dive... What are you planning to do ???" my friend asked.
"Since you are working, I might go for shallow spearfishing, but I have not decided where.... yet " I replied.
"Why don't you go..... and then you must swim a lot to reach the many and large stones that always have an issue...." he told me.
"I had not thought about it or I did not have this place in mind at all... Thank you... I will tell you tomorrow what I did. Good afternoon Theodore" I replied.
"I will be waiting for your call... good afternoon..." he told me and hung up. I never thought this fishing ground..... The coastline of course does not say much, but the Theodore seemed so sure.....
At the dawn, I was driving again. I got where I wanted and got dressed impatiently. I did not even mind the cold weather. The conversation with my friend had sparked my imagination and all I wanted was to dive in and see this fishing ground. Indeed, after a few minutes I was in the sea. At first glance, I did not like the place at all. Sandy bottom everywhere with bundles of seaweeds here and there and of course lady blur was present. Basically I liked the blur, but the sandy bottom.... On the other hand, Theodore was insisting.... so it should be a great place to spearfish. I dived to worm-up my lungs. Then I dived for a second time and waited... Suddenly a mullet (Mugil cephalus) was passing by in front of me.
"Let it pass..." I said to myself. As the mullet was leaving, a sea-bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) appeared, following the mullet. I hesitate a little until I estimate its size..... As I realised that it size was good enough, I pulled the trigger and caught a sea-bass of 1.2 kilos. (2nd Picture: The first trophy of the day...) (At night, watching the video, I noticed that a larger sea bass was approaching me from my left. If the underwater camera did not catch its movement, I would not have known that it was next to me). I swam further away but the seabed was the same. Sandy bottom everywhere with patches of seaweeds. I did not see anything remarkable in my many ambushes. But I insisted, since I had along way to swim, in order to reach the stony seabed that Theodore had told me. In one of the many ambushes, a mullet, about a kilo, swam by me. I wanted to prepare sushi and so I caught my second fish. I hung it on my buoy, since I had reached the end of the first fishing spot and I had enough swimming in order to reach the second one. (3rd Picture: One for the sushi...). I started swimming much faster and after about fifteen to twenty minutes I had passed the cape. There, a miracle occurred and the seabed had completely changed. Large stones appeared in front of me, but lady blur was present here as well. In my first ambush, a school of parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense) appeared in front of me. The herd was terrified, a sign that some other spear fishermen knew the place. I hid as best I could and waited. The school of parrotfish passed in front of me twice, but I was looking for the biggest fish to add it in the sushi I wanted to make. Indeed, after a while the leader of the herd appeared to my right and swam in front of me. It gave me time to make sure it was what I wanted and so I pulled the trigger catching a 510 gram fish. I arranged it on the buoy and continued. (4th Picture: Seconds before the shot...)
"No more small fish Zac, let's go for what Theodore had told me..." I said to myself. In the next ambush, I was hidden behind a large stone. There were some middle white sea-bream (Diplodus sargus) that I ignored. After a while, a half-kilo gilt-head (sea) bream (Sparus aurata) appeared behind them. I had a shot and if I shoot it, I was almost sure I would caught it. But the fish was small and I just followed its path to have it in the video, until it disappeared into the blue. I swam a few meters further and again another ambush. Nothing. Seconds passed... nothing. About fifty seconds had passed and I told to myself to be patient holding my position, ambushing. Then I saw a shadow over the front but distant rock, swimming towards me.
"Big mullet.... no sea-bass...." I thought. The fish was swimming diagonally in relation to my position. I literally froze. The fish was swimming higher than me and so it could easily see me. I had to stay motionless, hoping for an opportunity to take a shot. The sea-bass passed me and when it turned a little, it gave me the opportunity I was looking for and I pulled the trigger. The spear stroke the silver predator in the middle and it sank puzzled. After tenths of a second, it started shaking its body violently, but it was too late. I embraced the wonderful 2.6 kilos predator and after I gave it a quick end so that it would not suffer any more, kissed many times and apologised for the pain I caused it. (5th Picture: 2.6 kilos silver predator!!!) I was full of joy. Basically my fishing expedition was over, but since I had swum so far in the cold water, I decided to fish a little more. Basically, I wanted to explore this unknown fishing ground. In the next ambushes, I saw several medium white sea-bream and some good mullets approaching. A large herd of mullets passed by me. Some of fish were big enough, but I could not risk shooting them... in case a bigger fish was in the area ??? In the next dive I landed among some stones. I was waiting something large to approach  me, but nothing appeared. At some point I felt a presence on my right. I turned slowly and saw a triggerfish (Balistes capriscus). It was not over a kilo and was swinging back and forth its fins and stayed still observing me. With its perfect variation it looked like a piece of the seabed. It was so close, that I could easily touch it with the speargun. It swam a little further standing meteoric again, looking at me. (6th Picture: The small triggerfish...). I turned the speargun a bit to get a better video shot. My movement scared it and disappeared into the blur. In another dive, I crawled on the bottom of the seabed trying to find a good spot to hide. I stopped behind a large stone and timidly emerged. I saw a movement about three meters away from me. I saw a fish tail disappearing in the blurry waters.
"Probably a big mullet...." I thought and focused on the movement I just saw. The fish turned and swam towards me. It was not a mullet. It was spiky and pointed like a big needle fish. It was a nice barracuda. It approached me and as it turned away, I pulled the trigger. The spear hit the fish low in its bely and the underwater sprinter did everything possible to free itself. Fortunately, the entire spear had passed through barracuda's body and it was hanging along its body. I freed the reel, allowing the fish to swim without any opposition, since my shot was not good and the fish could be torn and lost. I wanted the fish to be tired. Indeed, the barracuda made sharp turns and summersaults, which could be envied by the best athletes. I calmly handled the fish, that did not give up. In the blurry waters, from time to time I saw the silver fish shaking its body and the spear shinning, as the fish was dragging it along. In a desperate attempt, the barracuda rushed at me and turned around me, tangling both of us with the speargun's rope. This would give the fish the opportunity to increase the pressure on the rope and probably be released. Unfortunately for it, the barracuda came very close to me and I grabbed it first from the neck and then from its gills. Game over. (7th Picture: The two kilos sprinter...) I arranged the two kilos barracuda and at that moment my fishing expedition had ended, although I had plenty of time at my disposal. Happy and thanking the Heavens for Their wonderful gifts, I did not realised when I swam the long distance and reached to my car. I looked around so none could see me, I put on my clothes and left for home. There, after taking the necessary photos, I cleaned the fish as well. I was surprised that the sea-bass had swallowed a crab. (8th Picture: It eats crab too!!!). This was the first time I had seen such a thing. The strangest thing I had ever found in a fish's stomach, was many years ago, in a similar size sea-bass, I had found a lizard !!! (9th Picture: The two big ones!!!)
P.S. The night ended by telling my friend Theodore what happened during my fishing expedition.... (10th Picture: All the trophies together...)
