Title: Sea drops and much more.... #2, (During and after the spearfishing May ban...)

(1st picture: Wellcome...)

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax, Dimitris Samaras.

# 1. BEFORE. The last weekend before the May ban of recreational fishing, I decided to go for a last dive. My expectations for the spearfishing outcome were very low. So, I loaded all my gears and I drove very early in the morning for a deep but difficult place. Everything was perfect until I dove. The whole scenery reminded me of winter which includes mercy waters. I had rarely seen this place so hazy. The cape had plenty a bait fish and some bogue (Boops boops) of great size. If I had come for a shallow spearfishing with my 82tcm speargun, I would definitely try to catch the big bogue. Some fish were almost a kilo !!! These must have been the leaders of flocks. The big bogue in the island of Karpathos call them xilogopes, meaning that they are so unbelievable big that are made out of wood. Wherever I found them, I was gazing at them as I was swimming to reach the best fishing ground according to my opinion. When I arrived at the place I thought it was the best, I placed my buoy and started the ambushes. On the surface, the sea temperature was 18 degrees Celsius. Very worm for the season. But as soon as I passed the -8 meters, it was freezing. I made some ambushes just before the intense thermocline but I did not see any fish. So I decided to dive deeper. Interestingly enough, the sea temperature was steady no matter how deep I dove. Unfortunately the water brightness was changing as I dove deeper. Darkness had spread everywhere. I dove up to -19 meters and it seemed I was  spearfishing at night. A frosted blackness stretched out everywhere. The water visibility had dropped to maximum two to three meters.
"In these murky waters Jaws might appear......" I thought. I continued doing some deep ambushes in vain, so I decided to do them in shallower waters. At one point the bait fish run twice towards the rocks of the cliff. Some of them got under me. I tried to find out where the predator was? In vain though again. This, on the other hand, I got suborned and started hiding better while ambushing. Another good run of the bait fish. As I swan towards the surface a great barracuda (Sphyraena sphyraena) passed under my flippers. The fish was more than 3 kilos.
"I do not think this was the caused of the panic ..." I thought. The ambushes continued, and the only predators I saw were two little barracuda, that approached me to see, what this strange creature was doing on the cliff. Four hours had passed without seeing anything worth catching. I've changed several ambushing spots but nothing. From time to time small rainbow wrasse (Coris julis) surprised me. The fish came behind me and appeared next to my goggles, surprising me. This happened 2-3 times .... I dove for my next ambush. I reached the sea floor hiding behind a large stone.
"If something approaches me from the deep ... I'm very well hidden.... " I thought. But something cloudy was in front of me and it is coming towards me slowly. After few seconds it turned reddish... a snapper (Dentex dentex)!!! The fish was swimming towards me and in the blurry waters looked like 5-6 kilos. As soon as it realised my presence, it turned slowly away from me, but it was its last mistake. My speargun was on the target, and I pulled the trigger. Despite the long distance, the spear stoke the snapper in its neck, and got out of the right cheek. The fish just sank... My joy is beyond description. I reeled in the rope, while trying to filmed the fish, but the waves made it difficult. As I was reeling in the rope and the wonderful fish was approaching me, I realised that the size of the fish was smaller. Eventually, I embraced the two and a half kilo snapper. Hugs-kisses and the apologies for the pain I had caused it. I was impressed how fat the fish was...
(2nd picture: The queen is caught!!!)
"It must have eaten a lot of bogue ..." I thought. I did a few ambushes and went out. I was given my first snapper of this place, on a day when there was almost nothing big to catch!!!
PS. Later on, looking at the video I realised that the fish was caught in just 24 seconds !!!
When He Wants to Provide... !!!

#2. DURING. Eventually, May arrived. Spring had been in our life few weeks ago, and summer was around the corner. But along with May, the ban of recreational spearfishing was in effect. The implementation of such a law is correct, but ineffective. The legislator correctly thought that this is the time when the majority of fish are approaching the shallows to lay their eggs and thus the law drives away the amateur fishermen from the sea shore. On the other hand, the coast guard does not drives away the professional fishermen as the law states, allowing them to throw their nets next to the coast line and thus a greater disaster has been done. With these thoughts my friends and I started our training at the 2nd port of Vouliagmeni. One of the times I went for training, I saw a big trawler gathering its nets in the bay of Vouliagmeni !!! This is what I meant. Those responsible were absent even though there was a coast guard office near by !!!
With my friends: Brettos, Giannis, Dimitris, we started the dives. Training after training, we managed dive deeper and deeper. Thodoris, Alexis and Giorgos were added to the our team. To be honest, they were not added, we just became a bigger team, doing together what we all love so much to do. In one of the training sessions, Dimitris brought his underwater camera. So I asked him to film the dive I was going to do. After I prepared myself, I took a deep breath and dove for the bottom of the well that was at -30m. I landed on the bottom of the well and after a while, as I was relaxing, | looked upwards and there was a pleasant surprise next to me, Dimitris with the camera. I did not expect him to follow me all the way down to the bottom, he had the abilities to do so !!! I singled to him that everything was okay and after a while I followed him to the surface, where the rest of the team was waiting for us. Security above all. Then the others took turns and dove one after the other. Always on the surface there were at least two divers who were watching those who had dived. The feeling that some good and trusted friends were at the surface watching over those who dove, made such dives relaxed and enjoyable. Of course, this did not happen every time we went for diving. I may had slept well, had a good meal, but if psychologically I was not in the right mood, then the dives were not accomplished as I wanted. Sometimes the shallows appeared as the abyss, while other times the -30 meters dives were very easy.
(3rd picture: On the way down...) (4th picture: As I was laying on the sea floor...)
(5th picture: Dimitris inside the well...) (6th picture: Dimitris just before the surface...)
So one afternoon I felt very good, with no special reason ..... and why should there be a special reason to feel good? Normally we should feel great, just because we are able to breath. But that's another story.... So I dressed and dove in to the sea. I found Alex there and we started our dives. After we made some shallow dives to warm our lungs, we started diving in the deep. As one was diving, the other watched him from the surface. Definitely after every deep dive, we were having long breaks on the surface. My 1st dive in -30 was 1:36, the second 1:40, 3rd 1:49, 4th 2:04 (my new record). I felt very good in my dives. During my 5th dive, while I was laying at the bottom of the well, I looked on my diving watch. When I realised what I saw, got scared, stopped my dive and emerged at 2:08 (my new record). I reached the surface and calmed down, I realized I could had easily stayed at the bottom longer... The longer dive of Alexis that day at -30m. was 2:32 !!!

#3. AFTER. The month of May was gone along with the ban of recreational spearfishing. Most amateur fishermen (if not all), ran to the sea to enjoy our favourite sport. I loaded try diving gear and early in the morning and drove to a deep fishing place. I was relieved when I realised that I was alone. I got dressed and started eagerly fishing. The bait fish (bogue, sand smelt (Atherina hepsetus) and black damselfish (Chromis chromis)  were present. I started diving in a blurred sea, dark I could say, looking for the predators. It was like I was playing in a thriller movie. Mercy waters with minimum visibility !!! I did not see anything during my first ambushes. At some point I noticed some flashes deeper than I was.
" I would probably have to dive deeper ... "I thought. So I dove a few meters deeper and waited. After few seconds I saw group of blue fin tuna (Thunnus thunnus) about 5-6 kilograms, passing by at great speed. I tried to turned the long wooden speargun, it was too late, the fish were gone... Relaxation in the surface. In my next ambush, another school of blue fin tuna fish appeared. These fish were a little bit smaller that the previous encounter. They approached me at a slower pace allowing me to have a shot on one of them. This rocket of the sea, turned slightly on an instant, trying to avoid the spear, The spear stroke the tuna close to its tale and as it took-off at high speed, the spear come out of its flesh and vanished in the deep blue.
"The good news is it would probably survive... its trauma is light ...." I thought and dove a little deeper. After a few dives, another school of similar or perhaps somewhat smaller fish approached me. In fact, one fish headed towards me. I had a shot, but I did not pull the trigger. I did not want such a small fish even though it would make a nice sushi .... (7th picture: !!!)
The dives continued without anything special. In one of my ambushes, the horrified bait fish swam towards me and the rocks of the underwater cliff. I turned my speargun towards the direction of the predators. A big school, about twenty blue fin tuna fish, at an incredible speed, approached me. I did not had the time to react. The leading fish, which were the bigger ones, attacked the bait fish. and in few seconds they were turning away from me. I pushed with my left hand the speargun, aiming at a tuna fish. The fish turned with great speed and agility got out of my firing range. But I was lucky, since there was another tuna following the previous fish. As it passed in front of my speargun, I pulled the trigger and the battle began. The reel was whistling as the rope of my speargun was unwinding due to the frenzied speed of tuna. By the time I reached the surface, it had unwound sixty of the one hundred meters of the reel and was reeling out more rope.
"If it dives and gets tangled in the deep, I will lose everything and the fish will definitely dye." I thought. I grabbed the rope to stop more unwinding and the fish pulled me ten meters to the open sea easily. The same thing happen twice, but I felt that it was not as strong as the first time. I started reeling in the rope as quickly and steadily as I could. At some point I did not feel any resistance at all from the fish.
"Oh no... it got away too ... " I thought, but there was a slight trembling in the rope as I felt the gentle blows of its tail.
"it did not get away, the fish is swimming towards me..." I thought. I started reeling in as fast as I could the rope when I saw the tuna under my flipper. The tuna passed next to me, cycled me and took off for the deep waters once more. Seeing that the shot was good, I grabbed the rope and put more pressure on the fish. The young emperor of the sea was in difficult position. It stopped its way to the deep and turned towards me at an incredible speed. But it did not swim as fast as before. Both times that circled me (and throughout the battle), I was careful not to get tangled with the rope. Someone can easily get drowned by this amazing sea rocket. The fish was getting tired. I pulled the rope more and managed to catch it from the tail. It struck its tale violently, jerking me. I did not let it go. I caught it from the gills, took out my knife and finishing quickly the battle. I embraced it, kissed it and apologised to it for the pain I had caused it and put it in the buoy.
(8th picture:The emperor is caught!!!)
As I was resting under my flippers, a big moray eel (Muraena helena) appeared. The blood of the tuna had attracted it. I pinched it a little bit with the spear and it disappeared under a stone.
(9th picture: Greedy for food...) I decided to do some more ambushes and leave. But something had changed in the environment. An icy underwater current had clouded everything and drove away all the bait fish. Nothing was swimming anymore.
"I got the message ..." I said looking at the blue sky and swam to the beach content ....
P.S. The blue fin tuna was 7.7 kilos...

Έχει καταπιεί και έναν μεγάλο σαργό που είναι μισό-χωνεμένος. Μπορεί και να τον βρήκε έτσι και τον έφαγε, ποιος να ξέρει;;;;;

Title:  Bad-tempered Skyros...in fishing....
(1st picture: The Wellcome of Skyros in the area of Molos)

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

Stavroula and me managed to visit the island of Skyros for a few days. I had visited it, with some friends, for spear-fishing about twenty years ago. Then, apart from the port where we stayed overnight, we did not set our feet on the island. So, after so many years we decided to visit Skyros. We woke up early in the morning in order to catch the boat, which was located 161 kilometres away in the port of Kimi. We arrived at the island at noon and of course we went directly to sleep at the hotel we had chosen few weeks ago. Late that afternoon we went for a walk on the beach. We did not know where to go and so we followed the main road that led us to the Molos area. We walked a lot admiring the strange beauty of the island (rocks, small chapels in caves etc) and ended up in the restaurant-bar named Anemomilos. (2nd picture: Beauties!!!)
But Skyros wanted to show us its hospitality. That evening in Anemomilos, four professional Skyrian musicians were playing music. Using a violin, a guitar, a bouzouki or a lute and drums, the musicians played light-folk and artistic Greek songs. Beautiful voices, absolutely professionals. Personally for me it was a revelation. On a nice hot summery night with a minimal breeze and the starry sky illuminated by the galaxy, the music traveled me several decades in the past. The musicians started out from old hits of the 60-70s. (3rd picture: The professional Skyrian musicians...) As if in ecstasy, I saw myself, the young bum in Ethiopia that was running all the time, wearing shorts, blushed, sweaty, playing, hunting or fishing. Gradually, the music progressed in the 80s, bringing to my memory the first years in Greece, a refugee in my country, my establishment in Sepolia, Athens, then in Piraeus, the USA and finally to the present. It is very difficult for me to describe in words this amazing gift of Skyros. I stayed for several minutes stunned before I was able to return to the present..... one more mystic night ....
(4th picture: The archeological site of Palamari!!!)
The next day, we decided to go on an excursion to see the northern side of the island. Using our car, we reached the archaeological site at Palamari. An ancient settlement from 2700 BC appeared in front of us. The archaeologist and guardian of the site Ms. Evgenia Arampatzi guided us. She told us the story of the site and answered all our questions with great joy, passion and incredible knowledge about this amazing archaeological site. The whole settlement is about seventeen square kilometres, without counting the sunken parts, as well as the harbour, which is also under water. The largest part of the settlement has not yet been excavated !!! We thanked and farewelled to Ms. Arabatzis and we continued our tour. (5th picture: The archaeologist ms Arabatzi). The island has beautiful beaches. Atsitsa, Pefko, Agios Fokas, Kalamitsa, Achiri etc are some of the amazing beaches of this wonderful island. It also has many small islands around it. Wherever you look a small island will be there. If someone has a boat, I'm sure he will seeing far more beauties than we had seen. The northern part of the island is full of pine trees. It reminds Sporades islands. The southern section, it is dried out. There are some plants/trees where the locals cultivate their gardens. This part of Skyros looks like the Cyclades islands but tit is not Cyclades. It has a completely different sense of light. The island has a special energy I can say, completely different from all the islands we have visited so far. I do not know how to describe it. Only if someone visits Skyros can understand what I mean. We also visited the old town. It was like we had gone back in time. The streets of the castle were stone-paved that became slippery from walking. We needed comfortable shoes, because in order to see the entire place we had to walk a lot, since it seemed to be built on two or three peaks. We got away from the tourist area with the shops and wondered around into the alleys. It was like we had gone back in time. We expected to meet people from other times, with turbans, cloaks, baring swords and so forth as we turned the next corner. A unique experience....
Unfortunately, spearfishing was not so exiting..... My first diving was on a place that I had in mind in the northeast of the island. A shallow but deserted under water place that disappointed me. As soon as I passed through it and swam further out, the underwater landscape became magical. Big rocks were everywhere.
"Here we are ...." I thought. In vain though. Few fish in small sizes. I saw an orange ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta) hiding in a bundle of seaweed. I dove and I approached it. It was a bit smaller than a kilo and so I did not bothered it. A little further, a small dusky grouper (Epinephelus guaza) gave me some hope that I was going to find something bigger. I was wrong. Such a beautiful place so empty !!! As time passed, the underwater current was becoming stronger and so I decided to go out. The second dive took place to the west of the island. I swam a lot and reached the cape. It was a deep, amazingly beautiful place, but it was also empty. I did not see a single fish. On my way back to the beach, I decided to pass closer to a small island that was on my way. In the underwater zone of -15m. there were many promising rocks. But it was like a cemetery. Nothing was swimming1!! My last dive I decided to do it on some craggy cliffs. I swam a lot to get where I wanted. It was an underwater cliff that I could not see its bottom. I started diving and in one of them I saw a white sea-bream (Diplodus sargus) getting under a rock right before the underwater cliff. I dove where I had seen the fish but could not find it. After few dives I found my target. I could see it but I had a distant shot that probably I could loose my spear, hurt the fish and I would ended loosing it too. So I went from the other side that was closer, but the fish was gone.
"At least I saw something big..." I thought. The visibility was very good. I was diving at -20m and I could see 20 more metres. But I did not see another fish !!! I would not mind to see a big fish and not being able to catch it. Nothing. In all the places I dove there was a cold thermocline at -10m. If this was the cause, then the fish should have been under the rocks in their chambers. But they were empty too. I was disappointed I took the road of the return. There was an small island in bit away from my way and I decided to investigated it. Around the island the underwater landscape was very nice with large rocks all over the place. I dove to look for a slit that I liked, when from my left side a dusky grouper appeared. The fish swam away from. I followed it from the surface, without losing it from my eye site but letting it to calm down. Luckily the visibility was good. The dusky grouper swam towards some near-by rocks and got under one of them. I approached as calmly as I could. When I got ready, I dove where I saw the fish disappearing. To my surprise, the fish was out of the rock observing me. As long as the side fins are moving I could approached it. As soon as I got into firing distance, I pressed the trigger in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises. The fish was fighting to get rid of the spear while trying to get under the rock. In vain however, because my shot is good and I immediately embraced it. It had swallowed a big white sea-bream that was half-digested. It may had found it like that and ate it, who knows ????
(6th picture: At last...) (7th picture: Caught with full belly...)
"At last a good fish ..." I said thanking the Heavens !!! Later, while talking with some local friends, I was told that the island is being fished by many illegal ways (scuba spearfishing at night) and the island is visited by many divers from the island of Kalymnos. Some of them are fishing with the air providers and so there are not any fish left ....
The last day of our staying in the island, we visited the island's museum. We wanted to see what the archaeologists had found from the Palamidi area and the rest of the island. There were statues, kouros, ceramics, coins, gold, etc. But there was a jewellery that impressed us. On the jewellery several swastikas were carved. This jewel that was from 2000 BC. (8th picture: no comments....)
Finally, after searching in the internet, the first swastika was found at 8000 BC in the region of Serbia. The philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras named it a tetraskelino or tetragamed or tetractis and used it in his various theories. Depending on how the swastika was drawn, it was considered to have a positive or a negative effect on the explanation/solution of a question. And a fool had blooded the world using this ancient figure, which for us, the younger generation, reminds us only of the hideous hatred of a mad man....

Title: Hunting illegal immigrants...... of the sea...
(1st picture: The stormy welcome of Karpathos....)

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

During the week, before my arrival to Karpathos, the Karpathian Sea was almost waveless, as my parents told me on the phone. By the time I went to Karpathos, the NNW winds were present. I decided to go fishing once again to my beloved Karpathos. I was planning to fish at most for an hour. My plans were to look for some rocks that I knew, in case there were some dusky groupers. This fishing place usually has a lot of parrot-fish (Sparisoma cretense) but I never shot them, in order the fish to be calm. This way the fish that I want to catch are calmed too. So I got ready and I left at noon for a quick fishing adventure. Little thatI knew what the Universe was planning for this dive!!! I arrived where I wanted, got dressed and dove. The weather as usual was five beaufort of NNW winds, was waiting for me as I was going to turn the cape. I swam immediately towards the two rocks that I knew at the depth of -7.5m. As I approached, I saw a nice saddled sea-bream (oblada malanura) getting under the second best rock.
"That is strange ... why the fish did not go under the first rock that is darker and better for hiding?" I wondered. I dove for the saddled sea-breams, but right eye was looking towards the other rock. I must have squinted as I reached the level of both rocks, when I saw the lionfish (Pterois volitans) They were four.  (2nd picture: Lionfish in under the known rock...) I ignored them and caught the saddled sea-bream. Then I began catching these illegal sea immigrants. These fish live in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean and came through the Suez Canal. Especially now, with the climatic change of our planet, as it gets warmer, this provides an opportunity to these hunters to visit the Mediterranean sea. Lionfish are strong and frightful hunters with no enemies in the Mediterranean sea. They swallow the entire pray by sucking it forcefully. This happens due to their huge mouth. In the USA., the lionfish had been outlawed, because they had caused heavy losses to the indigenous fish populations. The US government encourages the fishermen to catch as many as possible.
As someone approach a lionfish, it stretches its fin to become bigger, but also shows its poisonous thorns, which are 18 in total. 13 dorsal, one on each pelvic fin and three small just before tis tail. The poison is between its bony thorn and the skin of the fish. Its poison does not kill a human being, unless he/she is allergic to it, but it is very painful. If someone gets stung, it is necessary to clean thoroughly the wound, press the wound to draw the blood out with the poison and to put some kind of antibiotic gauze on the wound. In case of serious injury, it would be necessary to visit a doctor, to be on the safe side. There are many other small and sharp thorns but they are without poison. The lion-fish's head is full of them. It also has a small thorn above and below its tail. Lion-fish are easy target, since they are usually motionless, waiting to attack any fish passing by them.
So in the shade of the best rock, I saw four lionfish !!!! I shut the biggest one and caught it easily. (3rd picture: My first lion-fish ever!!!)
"Now, what ???" I wondered. Apart from the dorsal ones, which seem to be poisonous, I did not know which ones were poisonous too. Their side fins are completely harmless and they are used to frighten other predators. When they are stretched, the fish looks much bigger. After I thought for few seconds, I found the solution. I passed through their mouths my fish-holder using as leverage the spear. The fourth I caught was a small, a very small one. But the length of its fins were very large in relation to its small size. At the time I put it with the rest fish, I saw on the sea floor a trumpet-fish (Fistularia commersonii) (4th picture: Another illegal sea immigrant....)
"Today is the day of illegal sea immigrants ..." I thought. I dove and caught it. I put it on the buoy with the rest of the fish and swan towards deeper waters. But at that moment, another lionfish came out of the rock, swimming with all its fin open. I dove and I caught it too. All this time I was catching the lionfish, I noticed that a half kilo dusky-grouper (Epinephelus gauze) was watching me from distance. It did not approach the rock, even when I was going to my buoy, that was a little farther, to put a fish on the fish-holder. By the time I caught the last lion-fish of the rock, it swam into it. Then it went out from the other side and looked at me !!!
I swam further and the sea floor was at -12 to -13 m. At my first ambush, a very large flock of dusky spinefoot (Siganus sp.) appeared in front of me.
"Another species of illegal sea immigrant ..." I thought. On an other rock that I wanted to search, I found three more lionfish. I caught them too. But this time, I was not protected by the cape and thus it took me longer to hang them on my buoy. I swam and reached the deep places that I came for at -20 m. The thermocline was at -17m. (5th picture: One more in deeper waters....) Up to that depth I saw lion-fish around. I ignored them and searched the rock for some good dusky groupers. I found two. One small, the other a little bigger. I ignored them and caught the two lionfish I had seen. I went a little further and checked two slits. The first one was empty. In the second one there was two to three kilo dusky grouper, so I aimed and I pulled the trigger. The spear was shaking violently, I grabbed it and pulled it out gently. The spear had stricken the fish close to its eye, but it slipped and the fish was held by the skin on its cheek. I left my speargun rushed to the fish. I grabbed from its gills, embraced it and swam to the surface. (6th picture: The two kilo dusky grouper....) My fishing expedition was over and I swam towards the beach that I started my fishing today. On the way, I saw two more lion-fish. I dove and caught the bigger one first and then the smaller one. The little one threw-up a small fish it had swallowed. Just before I went out, I saw something that seemed to be good for catching on the sea bed. I dove quickly and hide among the seaweed. A school of middle white sea-bream (Diplodus sargus) approached me. I aimed one of the bigger ones and I got a half-kilo fish.....
I was planning for one-hour dive, but it took me three and a half hours !!!
At home we examined the lionfish extensively and took some fotos. The thorns were carefully cut and my father cleaned the fish. The next day Madam Mimitsa (my mom) fried some of the lionfish to try them out. They had a sweet taste that reminded me of a sea perch (Serranus scribe), but with much more meat. We liked their taste very much. Certainly if I found more lionfish I will definitely catch them....
The dusky grouper was precisely two kilos...

Title: Peter's fishing place.

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

(1st picture: Peter in action!!!)

The phone rang and I heard Peter's voice: "How are you Zac? When are you planning to visit us?" "You mean for fishing......" I answered puzzled.
"Of course !!! My boat is ready and we will go to some far away fishing grounds .... We will leave early in the morning...." he told me.
"Lets do it ... But I will there earlier in the afternoon of the previous day...." I replied. I finished my responsibilities and after arranging my equipment, I drove to meet Peter. But I had plenty before the meeting with Peter, so I decided to dive in a place that I had not fishing it for long time. So I got dressed and dove in a river's mouth. The water was of course blurry, but the water temperature was fine. 23 degrees Celsius!!! In my first ambush, I landed next to a sunken tree, and a school of mullets (Mugil cephalus) approached me. I ignored them and continued waiting for something better. Few seconds later, a nice sharpsnout sea-bream (Diplodus puntazzo) appeared among them. I aimed and caught a 420 grams sharp-snout sea-bream. ( 2nd picture: The first catch of the day....) The same thing was repeated on the next ambush and I caught another one, a bit smaller. As I continue fishing, I approached an area which was covered with sea weeds. I dove and waited.... A big flock of sea-bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) came towards me. The biggest fishes were about a kilogram. The beautiful spectacle made me not to press the trigger. The fish surrounded me and then vanished in the blurry waters. In a few seconds, the entire flock came from my right side and passed in front of me. Luckily I had activated my underwater camera. Few minutes later on, the same incident was repeated. But these time the fish were fewer and smaller. I did not know if it was the same flock. I just watched them until they too got vanished in the murky waters.
I continued fishing, when I could barely spotted a nice striped sea-bream (Lithognathus mormyrus). The fish did not swam close enough, no matter what tricks I did. In a moment the striped sea-bream swam to approach me, but it turned immediately to leave. I had no choice, I aimed and pulled the trigger instantly. I did not see any reaction, and I thought that I had missed my target. When I picked up my shaft, the striped sea-bream was there. As the fish turned and I shot it, the shaft had stricken the fish on its back and came out of its eye, killing it instantly.
"Well done... but that was a lucky shot...." I thought.  (3rd picture: The lucky shot...) After a couple ambushes I caught another striped sea-bream. It was getting late and I decided to go out. In one of my last ambushes as I was getting closer to the shore, I saw a shadow approaching me with caution.
"Probably it is a mullet about a kilo ...." I thought and pulled the trigger. But I caught a sea bass of 840g. I felt bad for the small fish and went out. The fishing had gone well, even though I did not catch something big. I wore my cloths and went to find Peter. We decided to meet early the next morning. I enjoyed the food that I had brought, while looking at the beauty of the sea, and the wonderful landscape !!! I did not remember anything else since Morpheus embraced me...
I woke up very early in the morning and waited for Peter. After a while, he arrived with his boat. We loaded our equipment and took off for the place he had chosen. I needed to warm up my lungs, so he dropped me off in the shallows. I started the ambushes. In the first one, I saw a nice gilt-head (sea) bream (Sparus aurata). The fish had not see me and when it started eating on the sea floor, I aimed and pulled the trigger. The shaft went directly to the designated target, but few centimeters before it stroke the fish stopped. The gilt-head (sea) bream panicked and disappeared in the blink of an eye. Felt puzzled when I realised I that the rope was entangled in a corner of the speargun, stopping the shaft at the most inappropriate moment. Smiling, I fixed my mistake and continued my dives. In another ambush I saw a smaller gilt-head (sea) bream. I activate my underwater camera and I shot it. I got the fish and looked at the camera to complete the catch on the video, when I realised that I did not remove the cover of the lens ..... I burst laughing.... with the entire situation ... I continued fishing without seeing anything special. In of my last ambushes, sharpsnout sea-bream approached me.The fish were relatively small and I was not interested. But there was a different fish among them. It was not a small snapper (Dentex dentex) but this was a ..... and I pulled the trigger immediately. I caught a common pandora (Pagellus erythrinus) and as surprised and happy I was, I forgot to activate my camera. At that moment I heard Peter's voice. I approached him and told me to get in the boat and it went further away in the sea.
" There are pink dentex (Dentex gibbosus) some other bigger fish that do not bite ... " he told me
"But if I dive, I will scare the rest of the fish and will spoil your fishing ...." I replied
"Do not worry, I've caught some fish. The depth is -19 to -20 meters, dive..."he said. After I calmed down, I took a deep breath and dove. The waters were murky and I could not see much. I felt like I was diving in very deep waters. After a while the bottom barely appeared. Scattered stones were on the sea bed, without any special interest. Right before the sea floor the waters were more blurry. As soon as I passed through, I felt a colder under water current. I landed on the bottom and started fishing. Many black Damselfish (Chromis chromis), annular sea-bream (Diplodus annularis), and big two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris) were present. But I did not come for catch such fishes. I crawled to a nearby rock to have better visibility. After few seconds some fish, that looked like small snappers appeared out of the blue.... I waited a bit more when I saw one of the biggest fish approached me on my left. But it was not a snapper. I aimed quickly and I shot it. The fish started fighting to free itself from the shaft. I ascended, pulling the fish towards the surface. After a while, I had a pink dentex in my hands. I've never seen underwater nor I've caught a pink dentex so far in my life. It was about a kilo (960 gr). ( 4th picture: My first pink dentex ever...) The pink dentex in relation to its related species has a key difference. Its first dorsal thorn is large and painted red. It is an impressive, beautiful and fearful hunter!!!For the next ambush I dove a little farther. I landed on a muddy bottom. The stones I had seen on my previous dive were farther away. Turning to my left, I saw the pink dentexes approaching with caution. Suddenly one of them turned and came directly towards me. I aimed quickly and I shot it. The fish got lost in the blur, but I pulled it to the surface. It was my second pink dentex of 400 gr. ( 5th picture: My second one... ever... )I continued diving, but the fish were gone. I approached the boat. Petros had caught two more  pink dentexes and a nice seabream (Pargus purgus). We went to other places, but the fish did not bite. In some dives, the sea was so blurry that I thought I was diving into chaos. In one of these dives and while I thought I was too deep, I took a sneaky look at my diving watch. The depth was -14.8 meters only. This gave  me courage and landed at -22.4m. But I never saw any fish. So decided to get out. The fish had disappeared and whatever we found them, they nether bite nor appeared to my ambushes.
"Zac, should we continue fishing from the boat, with ... reeds I mean ... "Peter asked me.
"I do not know how to fish this way ..." I replied
"Do not worry, I'll show you ..."
"Lets do it ..." I said with enthusiasm. Petros prepared everything. We picked another friend, Panayiotis and we started fishing. After few lessons, I was able to throw successfully far away the fake lure. We caught many guelly jacks (Caranx dentex) , which were big. Of course my two friends caught most of them. I managed to catch 6-7 guelly jacks. The feeling of catching, reeling in the hunter, its fight and sometimes escaping ...were incredible experiences for me. I'm sure I'll try again in the future. I liked it very much. Not as much as the apnea spearfishing.... but this was something different ... Peter caught a bonito (Sarda sarda) and a pink dentex at the end of our fishing expedition !!! He also told me a recipe for the guelly jacks. (6th picture: The sky is on fire!!!)
The wind was completely calmed down. A great tranquility was littered everywhere. Only the the noise from boat's engine was disturbing our ears from this absolute calm. The sky looked like was on fire. The beauty of our planet in all its greatness. We live on a very beautiful planet,. Lets keep this way for the next generations ..... The pink dentexes were delicious and were eaten by Stavroula, her sister Sia and myself.
The guelly jacks were coked according to Peter's recipe and there were delicious too....
