1st day in the afternoon...

Since I had the time, I decided, for a two-day fishing trip. It wouldn't be two days exactly, but an afternoon dive and the next morning the second dive. But this time I would change fishing spots. I intended to fish in the clear waters and the next day, in my favourite cloudy ones. Both days I would be fishing the shallows. I prepared my diving gears and noon found me driving to the designated fishing spot. I arrived, got dressed and dived. A nice surprise awaited me when I entered the sea. Next to me was a loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta). (1st Picture: A wonderful surprise!!!). I forgot all about fishing and approached the turtle. However, it did not accept me and as soon as I approached it, the turtle swam away. It made a sharp turn, stopped, looked at me and then disappeared into the blue.
"We're off to a good start, Zac....Let's start fishing ...,." I said smiling to myself. I did some ambushes but I didn't see anything I wanted to catch. In an ambush, nothing appeared again and I decided to crawl to the next rock. Having the cover of the rock I crept closer and took a sneak peek. Two good white sea bream (Diplodus sargus) were swimming around. They had sensed my presence, but they didn't know what I was. The one in front came closer but also kept some distance. But it made the mistake and had entered the opium range of speargun. As soon as it showed me its full size, I took aim and pulled the trigger. The white sea bream swerved to avoid the spear, but the spear skewered it and just fell to the sea floor. (2nd Picture: The 1st fish of the day...). Delighted, I collected the spear with the first trophy of the day. It was a 400 gr white sea bream. The next few ambushes ended up crawling. So in one of the following ambushes, I found that among the white sea breams, there was also a good quilt head sea bream (Sparus aurata). The fish broke away from the school of white sea breams and swam to the left. The rock was covering me, so I crawled towards the quilt head sea bream. But the rock ended and I was exposed. I hid as best I could. The fish came closer, but as soon as it noticed me it turned before getting in range and I lost it.
"It's okay let's go on..." I said to myself. After a few ambushes, as I was crawling on the sea bed, I noticed a larger quilt head sea bream swimming and nibbling on the bottom. The fish disappeared behind a rock. Immediately I dived. I crawled to the bottom among the rocks. I stopped, looked around saw the fish coming towards me. I made the mistake of correcting my aim and the quilt head sea bream turned and I lost it too!!! (3rd Picture: Unfortunately it's gone...).
"You shouldn't have moved, let the fish get close and then we'll see what to do..." I said to myself angrily.... Continuing the ambushes, I noticed a small red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) was swimming around me. The small fish swam in front of me, giving me the opportunity to admire its wonderful colours. (4th Picture: It almost pinned itself to the spear!!!). The little fish almost run itself to the spear in its curiosity to see what I am. When it realised my presence it turned sharply, but I didn't go very far!!! In the next dive, I hid behind the rocks and waited for the white sea breams I'd seen. The smaller ones approached first. The leading fish came very close. I didn't bother it, and that probably gave the elders courage to approach. The one I wanted approached me, turned in full glory and the moment I pressed the trigger it turned sharply to avoid the spear. But in vain and thus I caught another 400 gr white sea bream. (5th Picture: ...and the 2nd white sea bream...). In one of the last ambushes, I crawled between the rocks, trying to reach the end of the cliff. From various openings I was observing the environment. As I approached the end of the rock, I saw through an opening, that a quilt head sea bream was swimming on my left. From the direction that the fish had, it would pass in front of me and probably didn't realise me. I stopped and waited, hidden. Indeed, the quilt head sea bream carelessly passed in front of me and I shot it in the center just to be sure. (6th Picture: The winter queen had been caught!!!). A battle began which had only one outcome: the winter queen in my arms. At last, I had caught a kilo winter queen. That was the end of my afternoon fishing. Swimming to get out, I saw a Salema porgy (Sarpa salpa) not in its best shape. Approached it, and almost grabbed it with the hand. It was very thin, a sign that it was not feeding properly...

Next day at dawn...

Damn the next day, found my many miles away, waking up in my car. It was quite cold as there was a light northerly wind blowing... With yesterday's wet diving suit, the cold seemed more bitter. But who cared. I got dressed and quickly dived. Mrs. Blur was present as usual. In some places, you could cut the blur with a knife!!! I took a deep breath and dived. A frozen blur was spread everywhere...
"Be patient and persistent..." I advised myself who was about to give up. The seconds were ticking by, when a nice grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) with suicidal tendencies appeared from my right and behind. The fish came from behind me, passed in front of me, to see me. I just pulled the trigger.        (7th Picture: The 1st grey mullet of the day...). After few seconds I had a 1.5 kg grey mullet in my hands. I had reached the old platform. I did an ambush just outside. I saw a grey mullet in distance while another was lost in the blur. As I turned around the pillar I was holding, I saw a lonely grey mullet staring at me I could say. I shot it and caught another 1.5kg fish.        (8th Picture: The 2nd one of the day...). I went under the old platform, swam and then dived. I dived and grabbed a pillar and waited. After a while, grey mullets, big grey mullets, appear through the blur and from all directions. The fish were coming at me, but I stood firm in my decision: No shooting grey mullets if they were in groups. I was just staring them in ecstasy. I made a few more ambushes with the same result. But in a moment things changed. Probably the many ambushes attracted the attention of three large bluefish (Temnodom saltator). The leading large bluefish passed in front of me and even slowed down. I couldn't expect for anything better. I took aim and pulled the trigger, aiming for its spine. The heavily wounded bluefish sank behind the next pillar. I ignored everything and dived onto the sinking fish. (9th Picture: Now we are talking and it's a big one!!!). I caught the big bluefish and after giving it a quick finish I showered it with kisses and apologies. It was one of the biggest bluefish I had ever caught. It weighed 6.3 kg and its stomach was completely empty. If he had eaten even one of the grey mullets that were around, I would had set a new record. The biggest I've ever caught was 6.5kg. I embraced it, thanking the Heavens for their wonderful gift. I didn't fish at all. But the Universe had a different opinion. In less than 50cm, there was a common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis), smaller than my thumb.                   (10th Picture: It was very small...). I shot the video I wanted and got away from the little cuttlefish before it had a heart attack. I got in the car and drove to a deserted beach where I took the pictures and cleaned the fish...              (11th Picture: Nice ending!!!).

Quality apnea spearfishing in Karpathos Island...

You may find this article in English at the end of the Greek version.

Title: Quality apnea spearfishing in Karpathos Island

Video & photos : Zacharias Skevofilax.

The weather did not calm down, so I decided to go fishing in the waves once more. I woke up in the morning, not at dawn, and drove to get where I wanted to go. As I was getting prepared, I saw an other diver coming out of the sea. He was an Italian sreafisherman who, with his broken English, I understood was fishing for white sea breams (Diplodus sargus). At least he tried, because he hadn't caught anything. So I dived in and I saw a school of little.silver-cheeked toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus). Countless little fish... I dived and the first ambush was between some rocks. After a while the first fish approached me. It was a school of Streamlined spinefoot (Siganus argenteus) but among them was a large yellow mullet (goatfish) (Mulloidichthys martinicus),  It did various nervous zig-zags, but in a moment it stoped, giving me the chance to pull the trigger. The spear hit the fish near the tail. As soon as I realised my shot, I rushed and caught it. As soon as I caught it, it got free from the spear. It was the first fish of the day and weighted 450 gr. (1st Picture: The first yellow goatfish of the day...). Wherever I looked for White Sea breams, I didn't find any.
"Probably the Italian diver..." I thought.... I searched a lot but didn't find anything good. In one of the many ambushes, I saw another big yellow goatfish. It was among smaller ones, but I wanted to catch the biggest one. At the right moment I shot it, but it swam away with its cheek torn. It hid under a rock. I searched every part of the rock, but couldn't find it. I did a few more fruitless ambushes when I saw parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense) a bitt far. I swam closer to them and dived. I looked for the biggest one. Suddenly the yellow goatfish appeared in front of me. I forget all about the parrotfish and concentrated on the yellow goatfish. Carelessly passed in front of me and I caught it. (2nd Picture: Only a fool does the same mistake twice...). I was impressed that, although badly wounded, I caught it so far from where I had first shot it. A little further down, I saw a few more yellow goatfish and parrotfish. I dived in and waited. The fish all together appeared from my right. But something made me look to my left. I turned my head and saw a large school of striped sea bream (Lithognathus mormyrus). I gently turned the speargun and target one of the closest fish. I pulled the trigger and the striped sea bream did various somersaults, a sign that I hit its spine. So I caught a 450 gr fish. (3rd Picture: The first striped sea bream of 450 gr.). Seeing that the rest of the school was still around, I tried a trick, just in case to increase my chances to catch one more striped sea bream. I stirred up the dead seaweed as if digging, then gently scraped a rock. Various fish were coming and behind them were the striped sea breams. Under the cover of the blur, I managed to shot in one of the largest of the school. The spear caught up with it, just before it turned and skewered the fish. The striped sea bream simply fell softly on the dead seaweeds. I happily collected the 650 gr striped sea bream, which had a large and humped muzzle. (4th Picture: The large striped sea bream of 650 gr!!!).
"let's move on....but White Sea breams are absent..." I said to myself. As I approached some known rocks, I noticed that a good grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) was nibbling on the sand that had not realised my presence. I dived and crawled among the stones. The fish moved a little further and was hidden by a stone. A chance for me to get closer. Indeed, I succeed and when it turned around and I had it in front of me, I pulled the trigger. The spear scratched its head and I don't know how I succeeded to miss such a target. As I was arming the speargun, a nice yellow shepherd appeared and I caught it. (5th Picture: The 3rd...). I decided to go to the cape which somehow protected me from the weather. As I approached, I saw two divers.
"We are in more trouble Zac, let's go out..." I said to myself. I had reached the point from where I started my fishing today. As soon as I went out, I realised that they were coming out too!!! We greeted each other, but I noticed that their spearguns spears had 5 points!!!
"Either they are very good or..." I thought. They went out and had caught small fish. This got me thinking. I got out, went to the car, left the head variant and back weight and dived again.
"They must not have fished the cape and especially the deep parts of it..." I thought and swam towards the cape. But in the first two ambushes, I caught two more nice yellow goatfish.(6th Picture: The 4th...).(7th Picture: The 5th, so far so good...). I went ahead and got to the sharp underwater cliff I knew. I crawled against the waves and reached the cliff. I looked to the right and saw nothing. I looked to the left and saw two White Sea breams hovering near the rock. I pulled back and crawled towards the White Sea breams. The foam of the waves provided cover to me and I got quite close. One of the White Sea breams detached itself from the rock and as it swam away, it turned to see me. I shot it and as it did several somersaults, it fell. (8th Picture: Finally!!!).
"Finally a nice White..." I said and took the 700gr fish in my arms. I decided to take the way back. As I was swimming, I noticed a small Salema porgy (Sarpa salpa)  not swimming well. I approached it and twice almost grabbed with my hand. The small fish had various scratches on its body, as if it had escaped from a fishnet. (9th Picture: I was so close...). Just before I went out I noticed a nice local goatfish (Mullus surmuletus) digging the seabed. I dived as calmly as I could and at the right moment I shot it. The goatfish was hit and picked up quite a bit of sand. (10th Picture: The 6th one but this was a local one...). Not knowing how good my shot was, I dived and caught it. It was the sixth mullet of the day. A few meters before I got out, my eye caught an unexpected movement, among several stones. I approached quietly and found out that it was a school of White Sea bream. I managed to see about 6-7 fish. The fish were all about the same size. But the underwater camera hit a rock and the two leading fish hid. I stood still and waited. To my right and a little deeper, there were 4-5 White Sea breams swimming around. I understood that they did not realised my presence. I aimed one and caught a 550gr fish.(11th Picture: The last fish from Karpathos Island for this year???). Happily, I went out.(12th Picture: Karpathos Island spearfishing is over...)

Title: Shallow spearfishing in calm waters.....

Title: Shallow spearfishing in calm waters....

Video & photos : Zacharias Skevofilax.

The weather was calming down and I was jumping from joy. By late afternoon the wind had completely died down. So I prepared the diving gear from the night before. Dawn found me on the road. After about an hour of driving, I arrived where I wanted to be. I got dressed and dived in, eagerly I could say. I was curious to see what condition my favourite shallow fishing spot was. As soon as I put my head in the water, I smiled. There were fish everywhere!!! I got ready and dived in. In the first ambush, I saw white sea breams.(Diplodus sargus). Beautiful fish, but among then there was a big one. The fish didn't approach me. I noticed that most of the white sea breams, including the big one, got under a known rock.
"If they don't go out from the opposite side..." I thought. I approached from the side so as not to be seen. As I was getting ready to dive, the big white sea bream came out to see what was going on. I turned on the underwater camera and pulled the trigger. The fish started fighting to get rid of the spear, I rush at it and caught it. It was a kilo fish and I'd stroke it almost vertically, but low on the belly. (1st Picture: The first white sea bream and it weights a kilo!!!). Joys, happiness... Continuing a little further down I reached a well-known cave. There were many little fishes around. I approached slowly to give them a chance to leave quietly and not to startle anything inside the cave. Then, I dived under cover of a ledge and approached. I saw movement in the shadow. I stayed motionless. When I saw the movement of the fish again, I turned on the flashlight as much as I needed to aim and pulled the trigger. The spear found its target near the head and I pulled out my 2nd white sea bream of the day, which was half a kilo.                 (2nd Picture: The second but a bit smaller...just 500 gr...). Further down, I ambushed at the exit, next to a rock. Various fish passed by, but I was looking for white sea breams. I crawled to the next stone and waited. Three white sea breams appeared from the left. I corrected my aim and at the right moment, I pulled the trigger. The white sea bream began to run but it was too late. I had caught the 3rd white sea bream of the day, only this one is a bit smaller (400gr). Then it was the time to catch some parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense). Large schools of parrotfish paraded before me. I chose the biggest one and only if it was close to a kilo or more. There were countless parrotfish. I caught three from the surface without diving at all!!! Suddenly they appeared in front of me and I didn't have time to activate the underwater camera. And when I did, it was a little late. I decided to go back to the buoy and hanged the fish. As I was swimming, I notice a bigeye trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus) passed me. It didn't approach me, but it didn't swam away. I aimed further in front of it (foresight aiming) and pulled the trigger. The spear hit its target over the side fins of the fish. A fight began for who would prevail. This is a powerful fish. After few minutes of fighting I got it in my arms. It was 1.5 kilos. (3rd Picture: The predator was caught...). I also hanged it with the rest fish. As I was arming, the speargun, I saw a red mullet (goatfish) (Mullus surmuletus) hiding behind a stone. It turned, put its head out of the stone and was observing me. I dived a little further and crawled closer to it. At the right moment I pulled the trigger and caught it. I put this on the buoy too. But my gaze caught a movement on the sea bed. It was a small common octopus (Octopus vulgaris). I just dived in to get the video shot. As I approached it, it smeared ink and crawled further down. (4th Picture: Time to run..).
"We scared it enough Zac...." I told myself and left it alone. I had not moved away, when a very large parrotfish appeared among some stones. As soon as it came out to see me, I shot it from the surface. I caught a 1,100gr fish which was the biggest parrotfish so far today. (5th Picture: The biggest so far...1.100 gr...). I hanged it on the buoy and swam towards the very shallows again. I know a tunnel that usually is holding nice fish. I approached and found out that it was full of white sea breams. As soon as I saw a big one, I pulled the trigger. I reeled in the spear and there were two white sea breams on it. The big one and a smaller one. (6th Picture: When Lady Luck is present...).
"If you're lucky..." I said to myself with a smile. As I swam in the great depths of the 50 cm, I saw the landscape turned into a living painting. A large flock of small Salema porgy (Sarpa salpa) and Streamlined spinefoot (Siganus argenteus), flowing over the rocks of the area. They were grazing the rocks but they all stayed together. Power in union. Their golden-yellow colour gave the environment an incredible beauty. I remained enraptured for several minutes, unable to get enough of watching this wonderful living painting in motion!!! (7th Picture: The new generation!!!). I left, since I had scared them enough. A little further down, I barely saw a shadow creeping by. I got closer and ambushed. After several seconds I saw a good white sea bream coming out of the slit. It realised my presence and turned to leave, but the spear caught up with it. It was close to 700 gr. (8th Picture: The 700 gr one!!!).
"Enough, let's go a little deeper to see the hole and get out..." I said to myself. Going towards it, I saw red parrotfish. One was big. Dived and waited. Immediately, after a smaller one passed, the biggest one came out to see me and I shot it and caught a nice 900gr red parrotfish. (9th Picture: Here is the red one...).
"Probably the prettiest fish of the day..." I thought. I had reached the very good hole. I dived in and waited. You need to be patience for the fish to come out. So I waited and after several seconds, I saw the figure of a white sea bream. As soon as the fish turned, I shot it. It was a 650gr white sea bream.           (10th Picture: The last one of the day...). Today's fishing ended here. In the afternoon the weather started getting stormy again. (11th Picture: Done for today!!!).

Title: Shallow spearfishing in the storm.....

Title: Shallow spearfishing in the storm.....

Video & photos : Zacharias Skevofilax.

After passing through several islands in the Aegean Sea with Stavroula, we found ourselves in our beloved Karpathos Island. Of course the strong 6 Beaufort NNW winds were present. This is the weather that usually blows in Karpathos during the summer months. As for agricultural duties, there were relatively few. The previous warm weather had ripened early the tomatoes, zucchini, etc. The only ones that made their presence strongly, were the eggplants. They were many and large. My father, all weather John and I, did a good weeding and that was it. (1st Picture:The agricultural duties are done...). Of course, he had managed to build the warehouse that he wanted so much alone. Indeed, the warehouse had became very nice and was waiting for his countless tools to enter. (2nd Picture:The warehouse!!!). But one morning, I saw a suspicious movement and went outside. He had climbed the ladder to insulate the warehouse from the outside. He did not mention his intentions in order to avoid any objections!!!. (3rd Picture: Even at 92, he's still a risk taker!!!)..
Since the weather was not calming at all, I decided to go fishing, in a known place. I woke up very early, drove where I wanted to and dived. I didn't see anything in the first few ambushes. A little further down, in some dead seaweeds, I decided to ambush there. I also checked a familiar flat rock that was empty, but I decided to remain in my place wondering if... Indeed, in the swell and the blurry waters, a good white sea bream (Diplodus sargus) came to inspect me. As it turned, even though the fish was quite far, I pulled the trigger and caught the first fish of the day. It was a 500 gr. white sea bream. (4th Picture: The first white sea bream of the day...). As I swim to the small cape, I saw white sea breams swimming among some dead seaweeds. I got closer to see better and at the last moment I realised, that the fish I have in my belt have caught the interest of a Mediterranean moray eel (Muraena helena)! !! It approached me, probably without realising my presence. (5th Picture: The uninvited but dangerous visitor!!!). As soon as I saw the moray eel near me, I swam backwards and poked it with the spear. In the blink of an eye, it disappeared under the rocks. I left thinking. "Let's move on after the little cape that protects me from the strong weather... I don't know what moray eel will do if it keeps smelling the dead fish on my diving belt..." and moved on. A little further down and while I passed the small cape, I noticed a large school of small fish. Looking closer and I saw they were little silver-cheeked toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus). A school of about 300 small fish!!!. (6th Picture: Unfortunately they are small silver-cheeked toadfish!!!). As I swam further, I saw a striped sea-bream (Lithognathus mormyrus) digging at the bottom. A quick but quiet dive and I shot it vertically. The spear pinned the fish to the sand and I caught another fish. (7th Picture: The striped sea-bream is caught...).
"Its a bit small Zac..." I said to myself. I swam further down. Things were a little difficult there. The strong undulation made it difficult for me to aim. I dived, between two rocks and waited. There was a lot of dead seaweeds which was reducing the visibility even more. Waiting, I saw a school of parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense). I saw the biggest fish and I was trying to catch it. My fish was nervous and hid behind a rock. It decided to get out and turned to leave. Having nothing better, I aimed as best I could and pulled the trigger. The spear caught up with the parrotfish and skewered it. The parrotfish just sank on the sea floor. I picked it up and noticed that the spear had come out between its eyes. It was a 700 gr fish. Moving a little further down, I dived and ambushed among some rocks. As I looked around at the various fish, I became aware of a large shadow coming from my right in the storm. He is a big white sea bream. The fish went over a rock on my right. I turned the speargun and waited. The white sea bream had suicidal tendencies. Instead of changing direction and losing it, it swam in front of me, giving me the opportunity to shot it. And that a what happened . The spear stroke the white sea bream low in its belly, and it swam frantically to free itself. Not knowing how good my shot was, I rushed towards the white sea bream. The fish had put its head in a hole and was calming down a bit. This gave me an opportunity and grabbed it. There, the battle ended and I had caught a fish of 800 gr. (8th Picture: Big white sea bream...800 gr !!!). I happily arranged the fish and continued. I saw another school of parrotfish. I dived and ambushed, but I noticed that the biggest fish was moving away quickly. Having no other choice, I waited there looking around. Then magically, the 2nd biggest fish appeared and I shot it, catching a 750 gr fish. (9th Picture: The second in command of 750 gr...).
"Curiosity killed the cat..." I thought. A little further down in another ambush, lots of small fish were swimming around, but I didn't see anything big. I crawled a little in front of some rocks and waited. There appeared in the blur a beautiful white sea bream. The fish seemed unaware of my presence. As it turned, I shot to it and caught a 600gr white sea bream. (10th Picture: One more beautiful white sea bream of 600 gr...). I decided to go back and get out, while fishing on my way out. As I swam towards the exit, when I dimly saw in the distance a shadow disappearing into a stone.
"Where did it go???... on the top of the rock???..." I wondered. I approached calmly and got ready. Looking closely, I saw a hole in the corner of the rock. I dived in and took a sneak peek, but I was ready to shoot. A large white sea bream swimming around in the hole that seemed too small for such a fish. Of course, there was no way to search and find the specific hole, unless one saw a fish getting in, as happened in this particular case. So I looked into the hole. The white sea bream turned when it saw me, but I was ready and pulled the trigger. From the sand that was coming out of the hole, I understood that my goal had been achieved. I pulled the spear gently, but the white sea bream resisted to come out."Okay...., how big is it???" I wondered and put more force and pulled it out of the hole. (11th Picture: the biggest off all... 1.100gr!!!).
"Very big white sea bream!!!" I said and hugged it. It was a 1,100g fish. Joys, celebrations, thanking the Heavens... Just before I went out, it was the goatfish's turn. Next to a chain, a local goatfish (Mullus surmuletus) was camouflaging. I dived a little further. I approached it, shot it and caught it. (12th Picture: A local goatfish...). Close by, I saw a big yellow goatfish (Mulloidichthys martinicus) hiding in the shadows. I dived, but there was also a parrotfish swimming in front of the yellow goatfish. As soon as the parrotfish passed, I had the yellow goatfish in front of me. In the shade, it was calmer so I shot it and caught it. It was 350 gr!!!                 (13th Picture: The biggest yellow goatfish...). As I was getting prepared to exit, I saw another yellow goatfish grazing on the bottom. There were some baitfish around it and this calmed the yellow goatfish and continued eating. I dived a little further so as not to scare the baitfish. I gently crawled forward and as soon as the yellow goatfish got up to see what was going on, I shot it and catch it too and I got out. I took the photos I wanted and left for home.... (14th Picture: The end...).
