Title: Finally a decent sea bass...

Video & photos : Zacharias Skevofilax.

I left very early in the morning to be in the chosen fishing spot, before the change of weather. The forecast said that the wind would increase from midday onwards. I found myself in the North Euboea Bay, just as the sun was rising. Where I was getting ready to dive, I saw something unprecedented. In a discarded plastic coffee cup, over a dozen snails have made it their home!!! Nature had once again managed to transform man's impunity (throwing his rubbish wherever he could) into useful beauty. I smiled and dived. (1st Picture: When nature is in a good mood!!!). The waters were cold, 15οC and the turbidity was borderline. But in some places it was more than I wanted. In one of my first ambushes, I landed in such a place. I could barely see half a meter beyond the speargun. So towards the end of the dive, I spotted a good shadow and pulled the trigger. The rope unwound like crazy without knowing what I had achieved. After a while I had in my hands the first fish of the day. It was a mullet (Mugil cephalus) weighing one and a half kilos (1.5 kg).            (2nd Picture: The first and biggest mullet...).
"Well done...into this darkness..." I thought and continued. A little further down and while the visibility had somewhat improved, the moment I landed on the bottom, a good common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) jumped out next to me. I turned off the underwater camera, surfaced, always looking towards the cuttlefish. It had gone and hid next to a stone. I immediately dived in, activated the camera and shot it before I lost it for good in the murky waters. But the speed of the dive and the shot resulted in me not having the video of the shot. The bottom was filled with ink from the cuttlefish's struggle to escape. I finally caught the cuttlefish, which was quite big (480gr). (3rd Picture: The fat lady of the day...). I happily hang it on my buoy and continued. A little further down and while I was on the bottom waiting, above and to my right, two mullet appeared. The second one was bigger so I waited a bit for it to pass and pulled the trigger. And so it happened. The spear hit the mullet in its spine and it landed on the muddy bottom (1.2kg). (4th Picture: The second mullet of the day...). I happily put it on with the rest of the fish and continued undeterred. I found a discarded wire mesh on the bottom and hid behind it. I waited long enough, when from my right again a lonely mullet appeared. I let it to approach me even more, although I had a shot, but I wanted to see how big it was or if someone bigger was following it. When I realised it was alone and big enough, I shot it and caught the third mullet of the day, which was the smallest (1.1kg).  (5th Picture: The third and smallest mullet of the day...).
"No more mullets today Zac. We caught the ones we wanted..." I said to myself. As if they heard or understood my thoughts, mullets appeared in several dives. Sometimes in schools, sometimes individually. In one of them a mullet came from my right and carelessly passed very close to me. At the same time another came from my left and after a while another from my right, testing my resolve not to shoot them. I smiled and left them alone. In another ambush and while I was waiting on the bottom looking left and right, I perceived at the last moment a large striped sea bream (Lithognathus mormyrus) that came with great speed to see me and with the same speed disappeared into the murky waters. (6th Picture: I barely saw the fish...). I quickly turned the speargun towards the fish, but... and swam out. I drove a little further down and dived again. Before I was ready, a sea robin (Chelidonichthys spinosus) was laying on the seabed in front of me. I armed as fast as I could and from the surface without diving I shot it. Unfortunately it was a bit smaller than I thought, but it would complement the soup that friends and acquaintances had requested.             (7th Picture: It is bit small, but it is ok for the soup...). I knew there was a sheet metal that I usually grab while doing shallow ambushes. Approaching it, I found that the sheet metal was occupied. There was another tenant. It was a common cuttlefish. Easy target. I lower the strength of the speargun, aimed and shot it. The cuttlefish filled the sea with ink and I caught my second 350 gr. cuttlefish. (8th Picture: The second cuttlefish of the day...).
"Fishing today has been much better than I expected... but the big one is missing..." I thought.
"Let's do some more ambushes and see. I'm getting tired..." I said to myself. I had been in the water for almost 4 hours and I had done 68 dives according to my diving watch. I did a few, ambushes but.... I did not see anything.
"One last dive at the familiar spot and we're out..." I said to myself. I took one last deep breath to finish today's fishing. I dived, crawled, without moving the flippers, to get where I wanted with my senses at their maximum. There in the blur was a familiar figure. A sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) startled and turned to calmly to swim away. I aimed and pulled the trigger. From the frantic unfurling of the speargun's rope, I knew I had hit my target and that it was quite large. After a few seconds, I had in my hands what I craved. (9th Picture: Finally, a two kilo sea wolf!!!). It was a large sea bass weighing two kilos. Joys and festivities, hugs, kisses apologies and thanking the Heavens for Their amazing gifts, I went out. I took the photos I wanted, cleaned the fish and made my way back, tired but full of life... (10th Picture: Done for today...).
PS 1. The sea bass had eaten an annular sea-bream (Diplodus annularis), while in the sea robin's stomach I found a tiny goby (Gobius sp.) and a tine common sole (Solea vulgaris)!!! (11th Picture: ...).
PS 2. We consumed the large sea bass together with a smaller sea bass with special friends a few days later. Of course, they were also accompanied by the fine delicacies of Stavroula!!! (12th Picture: Everything tastes better with a good company!!!).

White Sea breams of the Saronic Bay!!!

Title: White Sea breams of the Saronic Bay!!!

Title: White Sea breams of the Saronic Bay!!!

Video & photos : Zacharias Skevofilax.

The changing weather along with the severe weather conditions got me thinking. Watching the weather report, I saw that the weather would changed overnight. From strong South winds to North moderate ones.
"Let's go for a very early morning and shallow fishing??? We will find surprises Zac!!!" I said to myself and started arranging the spearfishing gear. I loaded them into the car and all was set. The dawn found me γgetting dressed at the chosen fishing spot. The weather was exactly as the forecast said, light Northerly winds. I eagerly dived in and started the ambushes. I coveted sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and other trophies. Unfortunately I didn't see a single small sea bass. But... let's take things from the beginning.
The sea was a bit cold, 16οC and quite cloudy, or rather ideal cloudy. The sea was as blurry as I wanted it to be. As I dived, on the rocks of the beach there was a common sole (Solea vulgaris) playing dead. (1st Picture: It was playing dead...). It had disguised itself and was waiting for me to pass, so it could continue hunting. I got as close as I could to get the video shot I wanted and then I left it alone. The first dives were completely fruitless, Salema porgy (Sarpa salpa), Streamlined spinefoot (Siganus argenteus) and small white sea breams (Diplodus sargus). I didn't mind and continued enjoying the dive, the solitude and the quietness that prevailed. At some point, I had reached a familiar small cliff on the bottom. In one  side of the cliff, there is a deep groove that rarely had any fish. I searched it, but found nothing, it was empty. As I was looking ahead on the bottom, there was a good white sea bream a little further away, munching on some treats it had found. I continued my dive, letting my weights descending me without moving the flippers. The white sea bream continued to nibble the rock. When it realised my presence, got confused and didn't know what to do. By doing so, it gave me all the necessary time to aim and the moment it was about to leave, I pulled the trigger. The spear hit the fish diagonally in the middle of its body and I had caught the 1st fish of the day. It was a 400 gr. white sea bream. (2nd Picture: The 1st White Sea bream of 400 gr...).
"We're off to a good start Zac..." I said to myself smiling. Several ambushes followed without success, when a fine white sea bream was hidden under a rock. I lower the power to the speargun and dived. As I was approaching the rock, the white sea bream poked its head out. It realised that I was approaching and from its nervous movements, I understood that it would leave. I aimed as best as I could and pulled the trigger. Of course I missed it.
"It's okay...let's keep going..." I said to myself. I had reached a small cape, where there is a sharp cut on its back side. I had caught some nice fish here in the past, but I must crawl on he sea bed pulling my self with my hands, without using my flippers. So I dived and crawled looking around. As I passed the cape, I noticed a very large white sea bream nibbling on the rocks. The fish had not noticed my presence. I aimed in a flash and when it realised my presence and started to leave, the spear caught up with it. Due to the momentum of the spear, it pushed the fish towards the other side of the small cape and I lost it from my site. But a backflip made by the white sea bream, I understood that the shot was where it should be. As I reeled in the rope, I saw that I had hit it behind the eye... (3rd Picture: The 2nd and biggest of 970 gr...). The fish was big, close to the kilo (970 gr!!!). Joys and celebrations, Thanking the Heavens, etc.
"We haven't seen sea bass...Is it the day of the white sea breams???" I wondered. I arranged the fish and continued. Just as I armed the speargun, I saw a good two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris) standing under the flippers. Without doing much, I sank a little and pulled the trigger. This time the vertical shot was successful. (4th Picture: The two-banded sea bream...). I collected the two-banded sea bream and continued. After a few ambushes, a white sea bream came towards me. The fish was nervous and by the time I decided to shot it was too late and of course I missed it. Quick ambush on the front cut, maybe there was something good out there that I hadn't seen. I waited and waited, and after several seconds a Comber-fish (Serranus cabrilla) appeared in front of the tip of the spear. A second one was on my right watching. The first fish was so close that by gently pushing the speargun, the spear touched it and it jumped to go a little further away and turned to see me again. I smiled and left for the surface. (5th Picture: That is why it is called comber-fish!!!).
"Due to the fact that the fish are scared, the shot must be made when as the fish is approaching, because if it turns it will run away with incredible speed and we are going to loose it Zac..." I said to myself. So in one of the next ambushes, I dived in and waited as usual. I moved forward a little and waited. Again, a little ahead and waiting. I let the Salema porgy and Streamlined spinefoot to pass undisturbed and waited. After a while a good white sea bream came up to me. As soon as it began to turn, I shot it. The spear hit it just behind the gills and I'd caught another fish. (6th Picture: The 4th of 640 gr...).  It was another great 640 gr. white sea bream!!! I was literally dancing in the sea. I had taken the way back, by fishing of course. At some point I saw a  backbone of a fish on the sea floor.  I dived to examine it, but also to end up with an ambush I couldn't tell from what fish it was.(7th Picture: ???). As I continue the ambush crawling, I bump into a head of a Little tunny (Euthynnus alletteratus). (8th Picture: It is a Little tunny!!!).
"Now I know whose the backbone belongs to..."I thought. I did another ambush and crawled forward a bit. The school of Salema porgy had seen me and as soon as I dived, it swam away. I waited and saw a shadow approaching me to my right. I turned the speargun gently and waited. The white sea bream turned away of the range of the shot. I remained motionless. There was a rock that gave some cover to the fish, so it felt safe and approached me. As it turned to leave I thought: "It's now or never..." and pulled the trigger. The spear skewered the white sea bream, which was a little smaller than the previous one (610g). (9th Picture: 5th and 610 gr...). Joys and celebrations... Just before going out I decided to do one last ambush at a known-good spot. I dived and hid behind a rock. I waited a bit and then crawled to the next ledge of the seabed and waited. There, as if by magic, a good white sea bream came to see the strange creature that was crawling awkwardly on the bottom. As soon as it started to turn, I shot it behind the eye. The white sea bream did a somersault and landed on the sea bed. (10th Picture: 6th and 580 gr...). It was almost like the last ones (580g.). Thanking the Heavens for the incredible fishing expedition, I swam towards the beach to get out. I thought the amazing day was over, but I was counting without the innkeeper, as they say. At a depth of not even two meters there was a large loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). The turtle sat on the seafloor with its head down. I didn't bother it because I thought it was eating. Watching closer, I realised that it was not moving and waiting for me to pass. (11th Picture: The best encounter of the day!!!).
"Great chance to swim together!!!" I thought and dived. I calmly approached the turtle and grabbed it as gently as I could by the shell behind its neck. The turtle started swimming, I helped with the flippers and we traveled a few meters. I left it thanking it mentally and went out. I took the necessary photos I wanted and left. Today's white sea bream fishing may not be comparable to those of Karpathos, but for spearfishing in the Saronic Bay, I caught very nice fish !!! (12th Picture: Done for today...).

Title: Where there is a will, there is a way.....

Title:  Where there is a will, there is a way.....

Video & Photos: Zacharias Skevofilax

Looking at the weather changes, I decided to dive in a fishing spot with the north winds, the next day with the south winds and rain, as the weather report forecasted. So the sunny afternoon found me swimming, enjoying the sun and the tranquility of the surrounding area. I didn't see a single remarkable fish in my ambushes, not even one!!! As I made a big circle to get out, I saw a medium sized fish laying on the sandy bottom. I dived in to observe the fish, but it was changing direction as I approached it and won't let me see what kind of fish it was. I decided to shoot it, although it was a bit difficult. I dived, aimed and pulled the trigger. The spear nailed the fish in the sand. As I grabbed it, I realised it was a Common pandora (Pagellus erythrinus) !!! (1st Picture: What are you doing in the shallows???).
"What are you doing in so shallow waters???" I wondered. As I swam into the shallows to get out, I saw a hideous sight. Small fish lying dead on the seabed.
"Dynamite??? or someone fished out their nets and threw them away???" I wondered. Either way, this is human greediness. (2nd Picture: Human greediness!!!). Continuing on and just before exiting, something caught my eye. I dived in and saw a bunch of red-mouthed rock shell (Stramonita haemastoma) feasting around a dead two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris) !!! (3rd Picture: The feast!!!). I let them to enjoy their feast and walked out sadly thinking, "And then they are complaining that there are no fish around...".
The next day, early at dawn, found me diving in the same fishing spot but a few hundred meters further down. Here the bottom was more rocky but the south winds and the all night rain, had greatly reduced visibility. I started my ambushes with the medium speargun again and after a few dives, I realised I had taken the wrong speargun. Where there was a sandy bottom, I could not even see my nose. Just before I went out to get a shorter speargun, three mullets (Mugil cephalus) came towards my in the blurry waters. I did not expect anything better. I had the right position and just turned slightly the speargun and shot at the leading mullet as it turned and started swimming towards the open sea. I didn't care if the following fish were larger in size. The mullets were coming very fast and together with the murky waters, made my fishing very difficult. Unexpectedly, I caught a two-kilogram fish!!! (4th Picture: The big mullet...). I got out, went to the car and got my humble 82cm speargun.
"Now things are somehow easier..." I said to myself and dived. As I was swimming around looking for a place to hide, a nice white sea bream (Diplodus sargus) was swimming underneath and parallel to me. I aim as best as I could and pulled the trigger. The spear found the 400 gr fish on the back and I caught a fish I did not expect to catch. (5th Picture: In this case I was lucky...). A little further down in a dive and before hiding on the bottom, there was a good white sea bream. The fish was nervous but I had it wide open in front of me. Confident of my success, I pulled the trigger and of course I missed !!!
"All is caught and all is lost Zac... get serious..." I said to myself and headed on down. In one of the many ambushes, I hid behind a rock and waited. After a while, a nice mullet appeared. By the time I realised its presence, the fish had starting moving away. I quickly turned the speargun and pulled the trigger. The spear hit the fish in the middle and I hopelessly caught my third fish. (6th Picture: The 2nd mullet is caught...). But the visibility was becoming more and more difficult. So I decided to go somewhere where the weather was not so rough. I got out and drove after the cape where I dived again. Things were much better here. On the rocks of the beach I saw a bitten Streamlined spinefoot (Siganus argenteus). The fish was afflicted and had some scratches from teeth. After a while I also saw a saddled sea-bream (Oblada melanura) just as injured.
"Or barracuda (Sphyraena sphyraena) or Mediterranean morey eel (Muraena helena) ...." I thought. A little further down there was also a dead Salema porgy (Sarpa salpa) on the bottom. I dived to observe it better. It had a large gash in its side. Who knows from what???. (7th Picture: Who knows???). In my first ambush, I saw some good white sea breams, but they realised my presence and of course they never approached me. I went further and dived. I hid better and waited. In the background, some white sea breams appeared again. In fact, one of them had a mark on its back, probably from a speargun. When I started to emerge, I saw a tropical sea urchin (Diadema Setosum).
"You have arrived here also..." I wondered and pierced it with the speargun.
"Things are going to be difficult Zac..." I said to myself, but I continued my ambush. Suddenly, behind the white sea breams and in the blurry waters, a larger fish appeared. It had the silver colour of the white sea breams, but it seemed wider and bigger. Taking a closer look, I saw that it was a nice gilt-head (sea) bream (Sparus aurata). I hid even more and waited. The gilt-head (sea) bream stopped for few seconds, but after a while it continued swimming towards me. But it stood on the edge of the range of the speargun.
"It's now or never..." I said, aiming and pulling the trigger. Bewildered, the gilt-head (sea) bream did not move, giving the spear the chance to strike its target. Indeed, the spear found it behind its waist. The fish tried to leave but it was too late. (8th Picture: Finally!!!). I took this wonderful yet surprising trophy in my hands and showered it with kisses. I thanked the Heavens for their wonderful gift. I put it on my waist fishhook and continued. In the following ambushes I did not see anything big. Small mullets and two-banded sea breams were the only ones that came to see me. In one of my last ambushes, I saw something small coming towards me. I waited and found out it was a Comber-fish (Serranus cabrilla). It came so close that it almost touched the tip of the speargun. After looking at the speargun, the Comber-fish moved further to the side and looked at me. I moved slightly the speargun and the small fish made a 180 degree circle with incredible speed and disappeared into the blue. I almost choke from laughing!!! Just before I go out, on one of my last dives and while I was looking around, a sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) approached from the left and a little behind me. I couldn't do anything. If I moved even a bit, it would swim away. So I remain frozen. The sea bass swam towards me. It observed me from the side and turned to leave. As it turned to leave, I was able to move. I moved quickly the speargun towards the fish, I aimed and pulled the trigger. The spear hit the sea bass on the back and I was literally dancing full of joy. I caught another unexpected fish of 1.1 kg.              (9th Picture: Finally #2!!!). Fishing is over for today. He had given me much more than I expected. As soon as I got out, the rain started. I took a quick picture of the last two and nicest fish, got dressed. (10th Picture: Done for today...). As soon as I got into the car, it started raining cats and dogs!!! I relaxed in the car and enjoyed the delicacies of Stavroula under the monotonous song of the rain. Idyllic situations, our Greece in all its glory!!!
