(1st Picture: The weather did me a favour!!!)

The weather had calmed down and I decided to go a little deeper, in case that... So I chose the appropriate fishing spot, loaded my gear in the car and.... I got where I wanted and started my fishing. I did 2-3 dives to warm-up my lungs and started swimming for the deeper place. After a lot of swimming and at a depth of about 10 meters there were two good surprises. Two dusky groupers (Epinephelus guaza) after examining me, swam under the rocks of the area. I dived for the biggest one, but there was a third, little one, that I have not seen, and confused me. The fish was very mobile catching my attention for a few seconds, thus giving the bigger fish a chance to get deeper into its hole, lifting the sand. As a result, I could not see what was happening under the rock. I decided to swim around and come back when the sand had settled down. I know this plate, which has another entrance.
"Do you think it went so deep under that it would be possible to see the fish from the back entrance????" I wondered. After about 10 minutes I dived at the end of the rock. As I looked at the spot where the fish usually sat and I saw a known figure looking at me. I aimed at its head and pulled the trigger. The fish moved but the spear stroke it under the eye and passed it on like a skewer. Unable to move, I pulled the spear and it came out very easily.        (2nd Picture: It fulled me, it was not the biggest fish...)
"It's probably the middle-size fish." I said to myself. It really was (1.8 kg). I let some time pass and then I dived from the other side. Looking inside, I saw another known figure looking at me. Without much thought I pulled the trigger. The spear was shaken violently, but as I tried to pull it, it just came out just a little. Almost 1/3 of the spear was out of the rock, but the rest did not... Looking closer, the head of the dusky grouper was visible. I decided to shoot it with the second speargun that I had on the buoy. This would make it easier for me to manoeuvre the fish. As I was getting ready to dive, my gaze caught a movement on a rock a little further. A nice white sea bream (Diplodus sargus) tried to hide behind a rock. But it did not fit so that its side wings were visible. I left the dusky and dived for the white sea bream. I approached it as quietly as I could, from the side it could not see me. As soon as I entered the shooting range, I turned, saw it and shot it in the middle of its body. I caught a nice white sea bream (550gr.).               (3rd Picture: What it was doing there???). And I never understood what this fish was doing there. A little rest on the surface and a dived for the dusky. I see it, aimed and shot it for the second time, but still the fish did not come out. I dived a few times and looked at what I needed to do to get it out. The reason was that the fish was big. Pulling in a straight the fish could not come out because at that spot the rock narrow. It needed to go further to the left where there is more height on the rock to get it out. I had a meeting with myself and decided to push it with the speargun and then pulled it out. Indeed, after a while, I pushed the dusky, and immediately I pulled it to the left... and the fish came into my hands. It is a four kilo (3.8 kg) dusky grouper. I was impressed that both shots were under the eye of the fish, but also parallel. (4th Picture: This was the one...). The dusky grouper could not move because both spears had passed it like a skewer. Full of joy, I placed it on the buoy along with the other two fish and shot a video, thinking my fishing was over. When I finished, I saw that a large yellow goatfish (Mulloidichthys martinicus) had suicidal tendencies as it was swimming under my fins. I dived, aimed and shot it, catching it. And all this happened in about an hour of fishing!!!
"Let's go out Zac, by following a different swimming path..." I said to myself. So I swam further away making a big circle on my way out. Knowing the place well, I chose some stones to look for. On the very first stone, I saw an equally beautiful white sea bream. Behind it there was a large lionfish (Pterois volitans). I shot the white sea bream, which was a fish of 550 gr. (5th Picture: The second white sea bream...). In the next dive, I caught the lionfish, which as soon as it saw me, ran to hide in the deep slit, but it was too late. (6th Picture: No favour to you...). There I also saw two tropical sea urchins (Diadema Setosum). I pierced both of them with the spear and finished them with my knife. They have over taken our seas, sealing holes and crevices and preventing fish from entering. They have no natural enemies and are spreading with incredible speed. Continuing I saw the well-known dusky grouper, named "Mpoulis". It was a fish +15 kg and swan into a hole that can fit an entire truck. I greeted him as it ran to hide and I went a little further down on some underwater cliffs and caves. In the past I had seen and caught big fish there. So out of curiosity I dived into the first known slit. There was a saddled sea-bream (Oblada melanura) and a lionfish. I did not bother and continued for the deepest underwater caves. Unfortunately I did not see any black fish (groupers) but it was full of saddled sea-breams. After making sure there was nothing better, I caught a good size saddled sea-bream. (7th Picture: The first saddled sea-bream...). The next dive was a little deeper. I knew a good slit that has given me some nice fish in the past. So I dived and approached it. I saw inside the slit a very large lionfish, but also a saddled sea-bream which was swimming away from the back of the slit. I swam around the rock and as soon as I saw the saddled sea-bream, I shot it and caught it near its tail. (8th Picture: The last saddled sea-bream...). In the next dive I caught the big lionfish that was close to one kilo. I went back to the first slit and caught the lionfish I had seen and one more a little deeper. (9th Picture: The biggest lionfish...). I had reached the point where I had started my fishing and completely satisfied with the outcome, I went out. The unpleasant surprise was the too many tropical sea urchins in the deeper waters. There were so many that one needs to scuba-dive to collect them. In a few years, if nothing is done to change the situation, there will be no holes and crevices left for the fish of the Mediterranean Sea!!!              (10th Picture: Done for today...).

Title: Easter in Karpathos island and many white sea-bream while spearfishing #1.

Video: Zacharias Skevofilax.

I arrived by airplane at my favourite island of Karpathos but the car would arrive late the next afternoon by the ship liner. So I had about a day and a half to do different things, before the fishing started. Hugs, kisses with parents.....
The winter was very cold and rainy on the island and All-weather John's farming went far behind schedule. The weather had wormed-up during the last 2-3 weeks. In the seed-bed the first plants appeared and my father started preparing his planning what to grow. (1st Picture: The seed-bed...). He had already planted some tomatoes, zucchini, onions and eggplants. The greenhouse was ready and waiting for the tropical plants to be transplanted. (2nd Picture: The greenhouse is ready!!!). So my assistance was not needed. I took a long walk, admiring the flower-dressed Karpathos. (3rd Picture: The flower-dressed Karpathos!!!). It is amazing how nature changes during spring. The island, like the rest of Greece, was green with incredible colours from the various wildflowers. I took the photos I wanted and returned home. (4th Picture: Choosing seeds...)
The ship finally arrived and I started to plan about the first spearfishing excursion. The only obstacle was the weather. A very strong east wind was blowing, and from time to time was reaching up to 9 Beaufort. Two flights from Athens failed to land and returned!!! At sunrise I was in the water. I wanted to go for deep spearfishing, but the weather had literally pushed me to stay in very shallow waters. From time to time, the wind gusts fell on me and I thought that someone was throwing a cuff at me!!! Things did not turn out as I expected. In the first ambush, I saw to a nice white sea bream (Diplodus sargus). I aimed and pulled the trigger, full in confidence for a successful catch. Of course I missed!!! After a while, as I am on the surface next to a rock, I saw a sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) approaching me. It was about a kilo and I did not bother it. But behind it, two larger shadows appeared. They were two sea bass and the biggest one was over two kilos. The fish were nervous, but the biggest one turned in front of me. Sure again, I pulled the trigger and missed it too. Irritated with myself I continued and found a nice common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) tucked between the rocks, an easy target. I aimed at once, shot it and the cuttlefish was torn and I lost it in the very shallows.
"Lets get serious Zac..." I said to myself sternly. I started the very shallow ambushes and crawled on the seabed. I quickly caught two nice white sea breams. (5th Picture: At last...). "At last..." I said. As I was getting ready to dive, I notice a big white sea bream's tail moving in front of me between two stones. I dived as quietly as I could and as soon as I had an adequate target I shot it and caught another white sea bream of 510 gr. (6th Picture: The second one...). Something magical happens in the next ambush. A large school of parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense) paraded in front of me. Among them there were some big fish, but the whole scene was so amazing that I could not pull the trigger. I just stayed in my position enjoying this living-magical scene that was unfolding in front of me. (7th Picture: The magical scene!!!). After a few dives, some parrotfish came in front of me. I chose the biggest one and got one that was 680 gr. I had noticed in the large school of parrotfish, that a good white sea bream was swimming among the school. I was waiting for it on the next dive. Indeed, after a few seconds, the white sea bream did what I was expecting and caught it. At my next ambush, the big school of parrotfish approached me again. I did not bother the fish and they calmed down. This calmness attracted another white sea bream from far away. The white sea bream slipped between the parrotfish, but I had seen it. The spear stroke the white sea bream on its back and the fish fell on the next stone. The whole commotion frightened another white sea bream that hid under the first rock it found. I dived as calmly as I could and caught a half kilo fish. I caught another parrotfish of 800 gr. and a sea bream too. (8th Picture: The biggest one...). But the weather had begun to change direction. So as I passed the cape to get out, I found out that the wind was blowing towards me. What could I do? I had to cover a distance of about 200 m with opposite wind. I continued my spearfishing, swimming slowly. In an ambush, I was among dead seaweed. The strong ripples made my spearfishing difficult. I crawled on the seabed using my hands, trying to find some good fish. As I crawled, I realised that in front and to my right, there was a wide shadow that nibbled the seafloor. I aimed and shot it. The fish tried to avoid the spear but it was too late. It was a large white sea bream (650gr.). (9th Picture: Among the dead seaweeds...). Almost the same happens with a large parrotfish (800gr.) that was among the dead seaweed too. I know very well this part of the route and I usually try to fish this spot with stormy weather. The seafloor is covered with large boulders, where nice prey is hidden. But the fish are very mobile and terrified and so a special technique must be implemented to get some result. I've come up with something out of the ordinary. I dive and crawl on the boulders, without using my fins to move as much as I can. I pull myself only with my hands. So in the first ambush I saw some parrotfish passing in front of me. I waited to see if there was anything better among them. There were some streamlined spinefoot (Siganus argenteus) but I was not interested in them either. As I prepare to move on, I saw a nice white sea bream that was following them. I stoped moving immediately, waited and as soon as it gave me the opportunity I was waiting for, I pulled the trigger. The intense ripple in combination with the blurry waters resulted in the spear found the sea bream low in its abdomen. A match started with two different players. I hurried to catch the white sea bream (580 gr.), as it was trying to get rid of the spear. I finally caught it... (10th Picture: Just in time...). I continued using the same pattern. Various fish appeared which I ignored. As I was behind a big rock, just before I crawled over it, a big white sea bream appeared in front of me. The fish tried to swim away as I instinctively pulled the trigger. The spear stroke the fish low in the abdomen too and another fight began. With quick movements, I brought it in my hands the 700 gr. white sea bream. (11th Picture: The biggest sea bream...). I could not believe my eyes with what was happening. As if all these were not enough, as I rested on the surface, my eyes caught some movements in a deep hole. Diving as quietly as I could and saw three  white sea breams moving carefree. I aimed the closest one and pulled the trigger. The spear stroke the sea bream vertically, and I brought in my arms another half kilo of fish (490 gr.). (12th Picture: If you are lucky...). Ten meters before I got out, I decided for one last ambush on the sandy seabed in the blurry waters. Two small striped sea-breams (Lithognathus mormyrus) approached me. I did not bother them and kept waiting. After a while a bigger one appeared. I shot it and caught a striped sea-bream 440 gr. (13th Picture: Wellcome...). At that moment I decided to get out. What a successful white sea bream spearfishing it was!!! I did not expect my fishing to have such an epic end, especially since it started... (14th Picture: All the trophies together...).

Κρύο, πολύ κρύο....It was cold, too cold....

Title: It was cold, too cold....

Title: It was cold, too cold....

Photo - video: Zacharias Skevofilax.

Rains, snow, thunderstorms etc.... but who cares. So once more I went spearfishing. The meteorological forecast said it was going to rain with sleet, but who cares. So at dawn I found myself getting dressed, while the north winds was blowing cold. Fortunately, it was not raining when I put on mi underwater gear!!! I expected the water to be cloudy so I got the shortest speargun I had and I was right. Mrs. Blur was faithful to her appointment. The waters were cloudy and cold. My underwater watch showed 12οC!!! Just when I got underwater, I could barely see a familiar silhouette on the mud that covered the seabed. It was a good in size common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis). I aimed as best as I could and pressed the trigger. As a result I caught the cuttlefish, but it spitted so much ink, that made the sea so black that I could not even see my nose. (1st picture: Wellcome...). I went a little further down and started my ambushes. In an ambush, I landed near some branches that had probably brought by the bad weather of the previous days. Usually between the branches there are fish that are either hiding from their pursuers, or that are ambushing for a possible snack. I landed as softly as I could, so as not to stir up the blur and waited. In a few seconds several sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) passed by me. The biggest ones were at most one kilo, but I was looking for bigger fish. Unfortunately no bigger fish appeared. I ambushed once more in the same spot but.... I went a little further down and dived. There were some reeds here that I knew and that in the past I had caught nice fish around them. I dived and waited. Indeed, after a while some sea bass appeared. They were a little bigger than the previous ones, but still they were smaller than what I was looking for. I decided to go a little deeper and dived. I approached the muddy bottom and waited. I also did some noise to catch the curiosity of the fish. After a while, mullets (Mugil cephalus) appeared in front of me. One of the biggest ones turned and approached me. I instinctively shot it, but in the dense blur that prevailed, I could not understand what I had accomplished. There was not the slightest resistance on the spear.
"Probably because of the cold we missed Zac..." I said to myself and swam to the surface. Bored, I reeled in the rope to bring in the spear, but I realised it was heavy. I was surprised to find out that I had not failed, on the contrary. The shot was perfect. The spear stroke the big mullet on the right side and came out just above its eyes, killing the fish instantly. (2nd picture: The first and biggest...). I happily took the fish and placed it on my buoy. In the next cartridges my head came again, but they were small. I continued my fishing looking for the coveted sea bass. In an ambush and while I was waiting at the deserted seabed, a good size sea bass appeared from my right. The fish calmly passed in front of me, giving me all the necessary time to get ready. At the right moment I pulled the trigger and the one and a half kilo of sea bass (1.4 kg) just landed dead on the muddy bottom. Bull's-eye for the second time today!!! (3rd picture: And the sea bass...). I hung it along with the mullet and continued. I was approaching the end of the fishing ground, then I would go for the eelgrass bed. In my last ambush, I hid behind some bumps on the bottom and waited. A large school of mullets came towards me. The fish were coming and going. Some were big enough, but I was looking for sea bass. At the end of the ambush, when I realised that no sea bass would appear, I shot one of the biggest mullets. This time the spear stroke the mullet in the center of its body and thus a subdued battle had started. After few seconds I had a 1.2 kg mullet in my hands. (4th picture: Here is the second one...). I swam back to where I had seen the small sea basses and dived for one last ambush. Mullets appeared but I was looking for something better. Between the mullets there was a nice sharpsnout sea-bream (Diplodus putanzzo). I aimed and shot the fish, which had given me a fairly large target, as it swam in front of me. I caught a fish of 800 gr. (5th picture: I was not expecting such a trophy...)
"One more dive and we will go for the for the eelgrass bed (Zostera marina)..." I said to myself. I found a rock in the muddy sea floor and landed on it. While waiting, I saw in front of me and a little to my left a black tube-dwelling anemone (Ceriantharia) of the seabed. I turned gently and took a beautiful video-shot of this eerie but at the same time wonderful creature of the sea. (6th picture: A deadly beauty!!!). This romantic view of mine, was the reason of scaring a good size sea bass that was coming towards me from my right. As I turned my speargun towards the fish, the sea bass changed direction and got lost into the blur. I did a few more ambushes, in case, but... Just before I entered the eelgrass bed, something caught my eye. I dive and waited. Two sea bass appeared in the murky waters. But I was not able to realise how big they were. As they passed in front of me I realised that they are not so big, marginally smaller than I wanted. As I was watching them moving away, I realised a much larger sea bass was following them from a distance. I turned my speargun and the last second I was ready to pull the trigger, the fish moves its tail violently and got lost in the thick blur. I continued the ambush making several noises to attract the fish, but it never appeared.... I did several ambushes but I did not see anything.... In one of my last ambushes, a fish was swimming away from me. Its shape, which I could barely see, reminded me of a striped sea-bream (Lithognathus mormyrus). The fish was changing directions constantly. The long eelgrass bed gave me the necessary coverage, so when I turned the speargun towards the fish, it did not seem to affect the fish. I follow the fish with the speargun and at the end of the ambush, the murmur turned and made a fatal mistake, getting a little closer. I did not expect anything better, I immediately aimed as best as I could and pulled the trigger. The spear stroke the murmur in the center of its body and began to make circles around the spear, a sign that I had succeeded in hitting its spine. (7th picture: Here is the stripped sea bream...). At that point, I decided to go out. The Almighty had provided me much more than I expected. As I was swimming I saw something strange among the seaweeds. An ocellated wrasse (Symphodus ocellatus) swam away as I was staring at its beautiful nest, which is made of seaweed. Spirals started spreading from its center, revealing the simple yet so beautiful construction. Something seemed to be in the center of the nest. I decided not to get closer as I did not want to cause any damage. (8th picture: A beautiful construction!!!). Just before I get out, I saw something familiar. A small cuttlefish had made its variation and was waiting for a treat to pass. I dived next to it. Its size was as big my finger.
"Is it possible to touch it???" I wondered. I approach it, I touched it with my finger. The small cuttlefish jumped and swam away for a meter. It landed on the seabed and waited. (9th picture: The small rascal!!!). I let it alone and went out. I changed as fast as I could due to the cold weather, cleaned the fish and drove home, enjoying the delicacies of Stavroula. (10th picture: All the trophies of the day...)

Title: You fool me once shame on you, twice shame on me....

Title: You fool me once shame on you, twice shame on me....

Photo- video: Zacharias Skevofilax.

I tried to finish the various obligations I had, as fast as I could, in order to go for another dive. But I finished a little late and so in order not to miss the dive, I loaded everything in my car and I drove away. I arrived at the nearest fishing spot I knew, late in the afternoon. I had about two hours fishing before the sunset. I got dressed and dived. The waters were cold and quite cloudy. Especially in the part where the seabed was sandy, things were very difficult. As soon as I dived and started getting ready, under my fins there was a nice common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis). By the time I got the speargun ready, the cuttlefish was slowly starting to swim away. It did not manage to move far away, because the spear of the speargun caught it. The cuttlefish stared spitting ink and soon the waters around me were a bit blackish...
(1st picture: The waters became a bit blackish...)
"Good start Zac...." I said to myself smiling. So I started my ambushes waiting to see the coveted sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). After several fruitless ambushes they came towards me. I laid down on the rocky sea floor and waited. The black damselfish (Chromis chromis) seemed a little nervous, but I might had scared them. Who knows??? At first a school of medium-sized mullets (Mugil cephalus) seemed to approach me.            (2nd picture: Not today...). But between them there were different shapes.... Sea basses!!! But they were small. They appeared to my right, then they turned, they stood in front of me, again the same movements. At some point I realized that there was a bigger one to my right. As soon as I turned and looked at it, it disappeared in a split of a second.
"Better this way... since it wasn't so big..." I thought. A little further down in an ambush, I hid in a slit. I waited and after a while mullets appeared. The fish came from the shallows and overtook me. Several times I had a shot at a fish about a kilo, but I was looking for sea bass. I was almost surrounded by fish, since they came from all directions. After a while a large school of salema porgy (Sarpa salpa)  appeared. Some of the salema porgy were quite large.... but I remained motionless. Especially when the biggest ones appeared at the end, I reminded myself saying: "We have not come here for salema porgy, Zac..." and let the school to pass. I was waiting for something bigger to follow them but... I swam a little further down to a good fishing spot for an ambush. I dived, hid as best as I could and waited. After a while in the background two white sea bream (Diplodus sargus) appeared. The second one was the biggest one and it tempted me, but I did not give in. Mullets followed which appeared from my right. The first fish to approach were mediocre, but the next ones were very nice fish. Again I did not give in and waited for sea bass. Two sea bass appeared behind the mullets. I ignored the left one and focused on the bigger one. The fish came face to face to see me. I had a shot it, but I thought it would be better to wait as soon as it turned, to have a bigger target. It turned so fast that I was not able to do anything. It went to my right and stopped. I quickly turned the speargun, but the noise from the pulsating rubbers, scared the sea bass that disappeared in the blink of an eye. (3rd picture: Why I did not pull the trigger???)
"Oh Zac... we lost the only remarkable in size sea bass that came to us... Get out of here and come back as late as possible..." I said to myself. I swam and left this fishing spot and passed the cape. But the weather was on the north part of the cape and so the sea was much more cloudy. In the first ambush, after a few seconds, two sea bass came from my right. They were close to a kilo and I did not bother them. In the next ambush, a little further down, I was waiting in case.... A shadow appeared, it was a sea bass but also small. After a while it was followed by a mullet a little bigger than the sea bass. I waited for a while..... As I was heading northern, the place was getting more and more muddy. I made some fruitless ambushes and decided to go back. But in my last ambush I landed in front of a rock. I stayed there maybe.... Seeing that nothing was coming, I turned to film something spectacular. Two beautiful Mediterranean fanworms (Sabella spallanzanii) gave a different show to the cloudy and hazy landscape.      (4th picture: Beauty!!!). The strong waves shook their opened spirals and yet they remained so calm. They looked like ballet dancers who simply followed the rhythm of the waves... They rocked along at a rhythm imposed by the intense waves. Looking at them, an incredible calmness took over me, as I admired these so simple beings, which, however, were created with so much Wisdom!!! I took the road back and I was wondering if I would see the sea bass again. I went to the area where I had seen the sea bass. I dived, hid and waited. I saw several baitfish and soon the salema porgy appeared. Behind the salema porgy and further away was the silhouette I was looking for. I did not know how big it was. I made various sounds and so I caught the sea bass's attention. The sea bass approached me very slowly and suspiciously. As soon as it entered the shooting range, I aimed as best as I could and pulled the trigger. (5th picture: I did..). The spear stroke the fish over its eye. The sea bass violently hit its tail, trying to get rid of the spear. I approached it calmly, but as I looked at the fish, I noticed that the spear had not outgrown the fish as much as I would have liked. My senses went to the maximum... I stopped what I was doing and dived on the fish to secure it. Both flaps of the spear were closed and out of the body of the fish!!! I grabbed it by the gills and gave it a quick end with my knife. The spear had succeeded hitting its target over the eye, passing through the hard bones of the skull and barely came out on the back of the fish. (6th picture: Lucky...). I took the sea bass in my arms (1.9 kg), kissed it many times and apologised to it for the pain I had caused it. Satisfied with the outcome of the fishing, I decided to get out without fishing.              (7th picture: The biggest one, 1.9 kg). But the sea had different plans. At a depth of less than 1.5 m, under some flat rocks, saddled sea-breams (Oblada melanura) were getting in and out. I dived and caught one of the biggest. (8th picture: The saddled sea-bream). As I arranged it, my gaze caught a movement on the adjacent rock. A beautiful white sea bream was hidden in the shadow provided by the rock. I dived as quietly as I could. I did not have an underwater flashlight with me, because I did not expect something like that to occur, so I try to see what happens under the rock, which had a 2nd opening at the other end and thus provided me with minimal visibility. The white sea bream made the mistake and moved in fear of me. It gave me the needed opportunity and I shot it. Not knowing how good my shot was, I grabbed it under the rock. I was right, because the shot was low in its belly and the white sea bream of 430 gr could easily get free and I would definitely lose it. (9th picture: ... and the white sea bream...). I went out, wore my cloths, cleaned the fish and returned home, tired, but full of energy!!!
