Title: In my frozen loneliness ....

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax.

1st picture: (It was a bit cold!!!)

I woke up very early in the morning once again. The outside temperature was at 3° C !!! But the call was much stronger than the objections of my mind and body. I got up, dressed and drove for the place I wanted to fish. The windscreen had ice. It was the first time happened this year. I arrived where I wanted and the sea was steaming. As if Poseidon had opened his underwater oven and was heating the sea. As far as I could see, the sea was steaming. 2nd picture: (The steaming sea...)
"He must have a huge oven ..." I thought, smiling. I was stunned by this mystical sight, until some crows got me out of my ecstasy with their screams. I did not see them, but a little further down, there was a very large flock of them, clustering on the beach due to the very cold wether. Going out to take a picture of the steaming sea, I disturbed the near-by crows, since I did not realise their presence. They were standing motionless on the beach, like old witches dressed in black with curved noses, waiting for the sun to come out to warm them up. I took some pictures and left them in their stillness.
3rd picture: (the crows...) And what calmness. Everywhere there was a frozen tranquility. Even the sea was still. It was as if it had been frozen and the Poseidon was trying to warm the sea. It was as if the time had frozen too. It was like what we had seen on television or in cinema. A science fiction film with this scene would easily be filmed. But this was not imagination, but reality. The frost was spread everywhere and you did not see any human soul around. Only a crazy lover who was looking for his beloved one was around. And I found her a little further down when I got into the sea. 13ºC !!! Even her embrace was cold and blurry. I started my ambushes, looking for the coveted sea-bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). But in vain. It seems that they were frozen and disappeared too. Nothing, just empty space. A little further, a piece of the sea-bed looked like as it was boiling. The Poseidon's oven.... but these were underground springs. The intense thermocline blurred more the already cloudy waters. Adding the strong cold due to groundwaters, then the scenes for the horror film were ready. After a few dives in this area, not even my thick spearfishing outfit was protecting me anymore. I was starting to feel the cold waters. I looked at my diving watch. 11ºC !!!
"Let swim further down Zach before we turn into an iceberg ..." I said to myself and swam for the next bay. Here the waters were normal. 13ºC, just sultriness ....
"And we are warm, we warmed up again ..." I said ironically to myself and continued the ambushes. At that moment, I saw a big mullet (Mugil cephalus) out of the seaweeds. The distance was marginal for my speargun, but I had no other choice. When it would realise my presence, the mullet would vanish into the seaweeds...... I aimed and pulled the trigger. The spear found its target, but with the momentum it had, it pushed the fish into the seaweeds. I swam towards the seaweeds and I saw the mullet again. But this time, the fish was swimming like crazy, trying to get rid of the spear. The spear had stroke the fish on its cheek, but due to the long distance it had fallen. It looks like the mullet did not realised that it was free and was shaking its body violently. By the time I approached it, it swam in the seaweed and I never saw it again. The good news are, that it will live because the shot did not cause it much damage. After a while, I saw a dead and eaten mullet. It was a one kilogram fish and only its skin remained. The rest of its body had been eaten by the various beings of the sea. It was the size of fish I was looking for.
"Who knows why he died?" I asked myself. I did another ambush. In front of me I saw Medusa from the Greek mythology. She stood on the bottom and waited for her victims. It was one of the largest sea anemones of the seabed I have ever seen. He had a soccer ball's size !!!
4th picture ( The sea Medusa!!!). I put my hand under her tentacles and touched her neck. The size of her neck was larger than the size of my palm. The Medusa felt threatened from my movement and many of her poisonous tentacles attacked my hand. Luckily I was waring a pretty thick glove. Still, I could felt the effort of her tentacles to pierce me. I gently pulled out my hand so that I did not cause any more damage in this wonderful but deadly creature and went out. Walking on the beach my feet sank into the sand. I felt very heavy. On the one hand, I was disappointed not seeing any big fish, and on the other the 17 kilograms I wore for the shallow ambushes. I sat for a while on the sand and thought about today's fishing. The conditions were ideal, but the sea bass and the rest of the big fish were absent. I did what I could ..... If the Almighty would Provide me what I longed for, this had nothing to do with me. I took courage from this thought, got into the car and drove further. I chose another place and dove. Same things even here. Everywhere there were blurry and cold waters. I dove a little deeper but nothing appeared. At some point, while I was on the surface, I saw that mullets were jumping on the surface in the shallows. With calm movements I reached where I saw them. I crawled on the seabed and hide in the seaweeds There were many mullets, but they were small. Once in a while I saw some big ones. I was concentrating on them and I started ambushing. The first big one, about one kilogram, approached from behind. I waited for it to pass in front of me and pulled the trigger, catching my first fish.
5th picture ( The first was caught...). I continued and I saw another one between the seaweeds. It's a different specie of mullets. This one had bigger eyes than the previous one. As it got its head out of the seaweeds, I pulled the trigger and caught my second fish of the day, (one kilogram too).
6th picture ( The 2nd but different specie...). After a while I caught a third mullet, a little bigger than the first two. Then, the rest of the fish disappeared. My shots and the struggle of the fish I caught, drove the rest of the fish away. I decided to get out, while fishing the distance that remained towards my car. I looked at my diving watch. The time was 16:30 and I had done 93 dives, fishing for six full hours !!! I could not believe in my eyes. I decided to reach 100 dives and to stop. At the next ambush and while I'm hiding behind a pinna (Pinna nobilis). I saw a sea bass swimming towards me from the shallows. It is a good size fish and the only one I've seen all day. I waited for the sea bass to turn a little bit, in order to have a bigger target, aiming at its neck. The shot went slightly lower than I wanted and did not kill it instantly. The fish tried to escape but it was too late. 7th picture (At last...) I caught it, ambushed couple more times and I went out. I changed and I cleared the fish. With the sun on the horizon, the frost again made its appearance embracing me with tranquility one more time. A frozen silence was spreading everywhere again.
The day was ending as it had begun .....
8th picture (no comments)

P.S. I did not manage to reach the 100 dives and the sea bass weighed 1,260 gr.

Title: Spearfishing with seismic activities....
Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

Day 1. We arrived with Stavroula late at night in our beloved Paleros. Our friends were waiting us and after we exchanged hugs and the necessary kisses, we went to sleep. The plan was set. It would include a morning dive, then we would have breakfast and at noon we would take a stroll with Dimitris' boat. In the evening, all together, if I had caught something big, we would eat the fish. Otherwise we would barbecue some meat. Having that in mind, we went to sleep very tired and fell asleep immediately, I could say. At 1:50 a.m. a strong shake woke us up.
Stavroula told me: "Stop moving, you wake me up.... Are you jumping on the bed???"
"I am not moving, it's an earthquake. Go to sleep ..." I answered her. Although the earthquake continued for several seconds, we felt asleep quickly. Shortly before the sunrise, the alarm clock woke me up. I jumped out of the bed and started preparing my gear. I kissed my love good-buy and left for a cloudy seabed because of its underground waters. After half an hour driving, I arrived at the designated area that I wanted to fish. I got dressed and dove in a blurry sea, as I expected to be. I started my ambushes, but the last night's earthquake along with the many post-earthquakes had done their job. Nothing was swimming. I continued ambushing in different places without seeing anything worth while catching. At some point, while I was on the surface, about twenty meters away, I saw a round, dark head emerging to the surface. Then it was gone.
"Sea turtle or a seal????" I wondered. I continued my ambushes and at a moment, while I turned to see my dive watch, I saw a small starfish on my glove. It was one of those that there were in thousands on the sea floor between the mussels of the sea bed. (2nd picture: Hi there...)
"Welcome little guy ...." I told it smiling, and that lilliputian creature waved its flexible arms as if was greeting me. I left it gently on the sea bottom and continued my fishing. At a moment, a school of sea basses (Dicentrarchus labrax) appeared in front of me. There were about ten small fish, but there were some bigger ones among them. I aimed and caught one of the biggest ones. When I got it in my hands, I saw it was a 700 gramms sea bass. The blur had deceived me and I thought I had caught a big one. I felt sorry for the small fish ... I did some more ambushes and decided to go out.
But as wise saying: "God's plans differ from ours." At the last ambush and as I landed on the sea floor, a large sea-turtle took off next by me. I got scared by its size as it got lost in the very cloudy waters.
"It was probably munching on the seafloor mussels ..." I thought and went out. I drove far enough and dove. A miracle had occurred and the sea waters were clear here, more clearer than I wanted. I started my ambushes and saw two big sea-basses. The first one came from behind me and when I turned as gently as I could, it disappeared quickly. The second one came from the right direction, but it realised my presence, turned and got lost before entering the firing range of my speargun. As it swam away, I saw an old trauma on its back. I went on ambushing and just before I decided to return, some white sea breams (Diplodus sargus) appeared. I consentaited on the biggest fish, which was a gilt-head (sea) bream (Sparus aurata) and I waited to see its size before I pulled the trigger. The gilt-head (sea) bream approached me and when it turned away from me, I pulled the trigger. The spear stoke it near its tail and came out next to its eye, immobilising the fish on the spear. It was not a very big fish, so we would need more fish for our dinner. In some ambushes schools of various fishes in incredible numbers were appearing in front of me. I was very surprised that there were no big fish between or around them. (3rd picture: The small size fish were all over....)
I decided to return following a different route towards the open sea. As I was approaching the sea floor, a small dusky grouper (Epinephelus guaza) appeared in front of me. It was about a kilo and I ignored it, but next to it there was a white grouper (Epinephelus aeneus) !!! The fish took off a little further, turned and looked at me. I swam as calmly as I could trying to approach it and dove. As I was getting ready to pull the trigger, the white grouper swam away from me. I emerged and followed it. The same thing happen again, only this time I followed it by swimming under water. The fish stopped and waited to see what I was going to do. Τhe fish was waiting me sideway, giving me the opportunity to admire its beauty and its beautiful colours, but with an irritated face! As I was ready to pull the trigger, it swam away and got under a rock. A quick breath and dove, approached the rock and searched for the fish. But the fish was gone. There was a siphon under the flat rock and the fish came in on one side and left from the other side without seeing it. Probably the time I dove, it was escaping from the other side of the rock. I was disappointed and decided to swam around, making a large circle looking for it. Indeed after few minutes I found it lied on the sandy sea floor. Tried to dive but the white grouper took off again. The fish was not letting me to approach it. After a while it got under a rock again. I dove immediately, but as I was approaching the rock, it jumped out from the other side of the rock. I tried to keep up with it. The fish had become much more nervous and did not let me to approach it at all. I swam following it as fast and calm as I could. As it passed over some seaweed I lost it ... I decide to swim covering a large area as I did before. At some point, while I have not seen the fish, as I swam passing over some seaweeds, the white grouper took off under my fins. Another frantic chase began. The fish was swimming changing directions. It was doing some crazy zigzags, while I was trying to follow it. After a while, the white grouper rushed under a narrow but long rock on the sea floor. Clouds of sand were poring out of the rock. A lot of black damselfish (Chromis chromis) gathered around the entrance of the rock (a sign that the big predator-fish was there) but after a while they scattered indifferently. I looked carefully the rock, trying to find out if there was another exit for the fish to use it again. I decided not to approach from where the fish had entered the rock but a little bit further towards the centre of the flat rock. I took a deep breath and dove. The rock had a deep slit that ended up in the sandy seabed. I turned on the flashlight and I saw its body. Immediately I turned off the flashlight and figured out where its head was, turned on the flashlight again and the head of the fish appeared in front of my eyes!!! Without second thoughts I pulled the trigger. Clouds of sand rose from the rock once more. I continued my dive and pulled the fish from where it would probably escape. The white grouper came out with the spear that had penetrated just below its eye and has come out next to its mouth. I grabbed the fish immediately and I emerged. But the rope of the speargun was tangled among the rocks and it took me few seconds to solve this unexpected crisis. (4th picture: At last...)I admired this beautiful creature that would be our dinner, kissed and got out of the water. My fishing had gone unexpectedly well. This fish was the first white grouper I had even seen and caught in this place !!! The fish weighed three kilos. I wore my cloths and cleaned the fish. In side the white grouper's stomach I found a half digested gilt-head (sea) bream  and a tiny conger eel (Congridae) !!!
(5th picture: It had a great appetite...)
After breakfast, we went for a walk with Stavroula waiting for our friends. When Dimitris and Aglaia arrived, we prepared some delicacies and with captain Dimitris and us sailed in a serene sea that the gentle NNW winds were barely wrinkled. Captain Dimitris took us to a leeward beach, where we enjoyed the nature, our friendship and of course the exquisite local appetisers. A wonderful tranquility stretched out through this amazing landscape. Everything was so quiet and calm. We talked a lot and late afternoon we sailed for the port of Paleros. (6th picture: The beautiful place of captain Dimitris....) In the evening, Chef Dimitris prepared the white grouper. He prepared the fish according to a local recipe called "petali". Together with his assistant (Zac), we prepared the fish, the octopus and the two salads. The forks were on fire and all of us enjoyed a delicious dinner. I could say. The evening closed nicely by discussing several events-stories. (7th picture: Chef Dimitris...)
(8th picture: No comments...)
How beautiful becomes life when you have good friends !!! ......

Day 2. Unfortunately, the next day, our friends had to leave due to an unexpected event. We goodbyed our beloved friends but we were going to meet them soon in Athens. I got ready ... for what else ... to dive into another place. But the weather had changed. Five Beaufort NNW winds had replaced the yesterday's calmness, blurring the waters. I dove eagerly, in the new fishing ground. The blur waited for me with open arms. Everywhere, it was very cloudy. I went to the places I knew and started ambushing in the shallow plains. Nothing. At some point I saw a shadow being lost in the blur. It was a nice striped sea-bream (Lithognathus mormyrus) and I fired instinctively. The spear stroke the fish on its back and I caught my first good fish of the day. After few dives when I saw a  shaprsnout sea-bream (Diplodus putanzzo) swimming slowly towards me. I had time to correct my aiming and so I caught another good fish. Then nothing again. I decided to swim to the nearby cape that was stopping the waves, so I could dive deeper. I started diving around -20m. I landed on a muddy bottom that had some stones here and there. A corvina (Sciaena umbra) took off in front of me and I was able to catch it. I caught a small fish. The blur had confused me ones more and I thought it was much bigger. On the next a school of two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris) approached me. I waited for a while and when I saw there was no any other bigger fish around, I caught one of the biggest one. I continued diving a little deeper I found a nice place I did not know its existence. Single stones all over the place at a fairly long distance. In some areas, the visibility was somewhat better. In these areas I did not see a single large fish!!! As if they knew I was coming and disappeared ... I did a lot of dives. In one of them as I landed gently on the bottom at -22m, a nice corvina started swimming away beside me.
(9th picture: Too late...) The fish was moving diagonally in-front of me and I caught it. At the next dive, slightly shallower (-20.2 m), I landed next to a large cluster of stones. Searching around I saw some fish next to the biggest stone. I turned towards the big rock and saw 2-3 small corvina. Looking more carefully I realised that there were two bigger fish near-by. I aimed and pulled the trigger. The fish was hit, but the spear got stuck under the rock. I emerged and relaxed for a long time. I knew my shot was good and that's why I was not in a hurry to dive again. Indeed, when I returned, the fish started to shake violently. In vain though. I took the spear and pulled it out of the rock easily. I swam towards the surface thinking "So far, so good...". (10th picture: One of the bigger ones...)
What did I want to think about it ... Desert.... I did not see a single fish. I was impressed (negatively) by the total lack of sea bass. Not even small sea bass were present. I decided to go out. Anyway in less than an hour it would be dark, since the night was approaching. As I approached the beach, I swan towards a fish farm. I found someone and asked him if I could dive under the jetty. He answered me positively but I must be careful because there were a lot of fallen things and usually there were not any large size fish under it. I thanked him and I got under the jetty. There was plenty of room to move on the surface without having to dive. I did a big circle under the jetty but I did not really see anything big. I decided to leave. While I'm almost out of the jetty, my eyes caught a movement. Looking more carefully I saw a nice gilt-head (sea) bream. The fish was almost under me, but it seemed that it did not realised my presence. I was literally petrified. I activate my underwater camera, I bended my waist to dive and I pulled the trigger. The spear stroke the wonderful fish in its neck. I pulled the gilt-head (sea) bream into my arms and left quietly. I had been diving in to the deep waters, but the most beautiful and biggest fish of the day, I caught it almost from the surface.
(11th picture: The winter queen!!!) Embracing the two kilos gilt-head sea bream and I went out without even taking the spear out of the fish ..... At that moment, our adventure ended in Amvrakikos bay. The following day we got our way back to Athens. Another wonderful weekend away from the city had ended. To the next one!!!

Title: My last summer dive in the island of Karpathos.

(1st picture: Finally calm seas!!!)

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

At last the weather had calmed down after four and a half weeks, so that I could dive in one of my favourite place. Thinking that the weather could change at any moment, I woke up very early in the morning and I was in the water a few minutes before the dawn. I swam and reached the fishing area I wanted, just as the sun appeared on the horizon. Unfortunately, the place seemed to have been fished heavily, because I saw many small white sea-bream (Diplodus sargus) had spear marks on their bodies. Many of these fish were as big as my palm. The first good fishing ground was completely empty. I continued fishing and caught my fist one kilo parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense) After that catch nothing big was swimming. I decided to swim to very shallow waters, hoping for a lonely Carpathian sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). In the various reefs that existed in the shallows, a large school of small mullets (Mugil cephalus) appeared in front of me. The fish were nervous and I tried to find if there was a predator fish around. As I advanced......... behind the next reef, I saw a big barracuda (Sphyraena sphyraena) in front of me. The fish was swimming slowly, but as soon as it realised my presence, it stopped and stared me. The only choice that I had was to swim calmly in a diagonal direction towards the fish's direction. It started swimming calmly looking at me. As soon as I got in the firing range I pulled the trigger, striking the fish. This sprinter of the sea, started a frenzy swimming. I hold the rope stretched out and followed the fish. As time passed, the fish was started getting tired. At that point I noticed that it was torn dangerously and I could lose it. So I rushed towards it, trying to catch the barracuda from its tail avoiding its teeth. The fish sprinted and both of us got tangled with the rope of my speargun, as I managed to catch it from its tail and then from its gills. The fish was just caught by the skin of its back.  (2nd picture: The sea sprinter was caught!!!) Full of joy, I placed the fish on my fish-holder thanking the Heavens for their wonderful gift. A little further down I dove for one more ambush. As I was crawling on the sea floor, I popped out of a rock seeing a nice but troubled white sea-bream in front of me. The fish came towards me, stoped and looked at me with curiosity. Without any delay, I aimed and pulled the trigger. The spear stroke the half-kilo white sea-bream in the centre and I happily embraced my catch.
(3rd picture: Curiosity killed the cat...)
"Very nice ... lets continue ..." I thought. I swam even to more shallower waters, but the waves made my fishing difficult. I dove ambushing by holding on some rocks. Some nice white sea-breams appeared, but the intense ripple did not allow me to be able to shoot at them. By the time I was able to stabilise myself, the only good size fish swimming around was a school of parrotfish. I aimed at the biggest fish, pulled the trigger and caught a fish of a kilo. I went even shallower waters, but my fishing became very difficult due to the waves. So even thought I shot a big white sea-bream the spear stroke the fish high on its back and the fish was torn and I lost it.
"At least it would live .... "I thought. I did a few ambushes in vain though and so I decided to continue a little deeper. I dove and hide behind some rocks, but the white sea-breams stayed far away. I crawled on the sea floor looking for white sea-breams when I saw parrotfish again. Not seeing any white sea-breams I searched for the biggest fish, and I caught another one close to a kilo.
(4th picture: One more kilo fish...) The positive thing was that I saw a lot of small dusky groupers (Epinephelus guaza) and mottled groupers (Mycteroperca ruby) about a kilo in my ambushes. Of course I did not bother them. A little further away. as I was crawling on the sea floor, a red parrotfish appeared in front of me and I caught it too. Then I caught a nice goatfish (Mullus surmuletus). I continued crawling on the sea bed looking for my next trophy, my gaze catches a slight movement, little bit further beneath a rock. I swam calmly, trying to figure out how big was the fish and what kind it was. It was a two kilo mottled grouper, which was observing me from the shadow of the rock that was hidden. The fish was floating, it had become black and was looking at me. I aimed at its head as carefully as I could and pulled the trigger. The spear flew with a dizzying speed, but the mottled grouper obviated to turn and the spear stroke it in the middle, hitting it instantaneously.
(5th picture: A two kilo beauty!!!)
"Beautiful ..." I said again thanking the Heavens. I decided to swam to the open sea again and go to the posidonia. I had not been fishing it for the past couple years. While I was in the posidonia, I saw a shadow on the sand. I dove ambushing, crawled through the seaweed and got closer to find out, to my surprise, that it was.a small white grouper (Epinephelus aeneus). The fish was about a kilo and all I wanted was a nice video spot. I approached it as much as I could, but after a while the fish hide, without succeeding with my video shot. I searched and found the place I was looking for, while I saw a good size white sea-bream getting under the sea weeds, confirming that I was in the right place. I placed my buoy and after I got ready, I dove. At the entrance, I took a sneak peek to see what was underneath. Five - six good size white sea-breams were swimming. I was trying to have a perfect shot, so the rest white sea-breams would not got scared more. I managed to do it, but the spear got stuck on the other end of the flat rock. I pulled the dead fish out to the surface. I did not have a second speargun, but I had a second spear. I armed my speargun and dove back to the flat rock. There were several fish still under the rock, but I wanted to catch the biggest one. Several second passed, trying to aim at the biggest white sea-bream. I managed to catch a fish of one kilo. I got it in my hands and I killed it immediately. (6th picture: From posidonia with love!!!)
I swam to the other side of the rock and pulled the first spear out. I did not want to catch another white sea-bream, even though there were some fish underneath the rock.
By doing so, the rock will remain alive, hosting various kinds of fish. Proper management of a good fishing ground, will provide fish in the years to come ...
Later in the afternoon the wind became strong again, reaching the six Beaufort again. The NNW wind gave me its credentials once again .....
P.S. The barracuda was two and a half kilos.....
