                                                     Farmer John in action....

Η κυρά Μιμήτσα in action....

«Ως εδώ ήταν..... πάει η μπουνάτσα, μας τελείωσε...» σκέφτηκα. Ο γνωστός Καρπάθικος καιρός είχε κάνει την εμφάνιση του για άλλη μια φορά. Από εδώ και πέρα το ψάρεμα θα γινόταν μέσα στα κύματα;;;;

Karpathian Sea Easter Gifts Part 1

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

(1st picture: A pleasant surprise!!!)

I did not remember in so many years I had traveled to Karpathos, my favorite island, that I had traveled in a night flight. In this unprecedented experience, the full moon was added. Just before we landed, the moonlight had painted with silver colour the surface of the sea. It was as though I was in another Universe, somewhere else in the Creation of the Almighty. Together with the tranquility of the landscape, the whole spectacle was unreal. But another surprise was waiting for me. The strong NNW winds were absent!!!!!! After I met my parents (hugs and kisses) we drove to our home.
The next morning, the surprise was still present. The sea was motionless. It was an opportunity to go diving to some places that the NNW winds strike them all the times. I decided to go a little later and went out to the garden to see what John Farmer was doing. After opening grooves, he made the pits, put the goat's droppings, shuffled the soil with the manure, he planted his cucumbers. He had already planted his pumpkins, peppers and eggplants. I sat down and watched him with how much love he did the agricultural jobs or rather his farm hobby. Every plant was treated it as if it was a new child, with much love and affection. (2nd-6th picture: Farmer John in action...)
At one point I concentrated by listening the outdoor environment. Silence was prevailing. The absolute peace !!!! Once in a while a birdie was singing. At that time, a goat's complaining bleat was heard. Then silence. The absolute silence !!! The mind rests, the spirit calms.....
It was the time to feed the cats. Every cat was gathered around my father and he cared for them with incredible love once more. I went inside the house to see what my mother was doing, the madam-Mimitsa otherwise (as I called her in order to tease her)!!! I found her in her kitchen after she had prepared the traditional Karpathians buns and was cleaning her kneading machine. After a while she was going to prepare and bake our family's bread.
(7th picture: Madam Mimitsa in action...)
It was time to get ready for my new fishing adventure. Even the universe was agreeing for this dive. Such calm sea should not be missed. I prepared my stuff, I loaded it in the car and drove for a deep fishing place I was planning to dive. I parked my car and I descended the small cliff, dressed on a small beach and when I was ready, I dove. The waters here in Karpathos were much warmer than the ones in Attica. In the surface the temperature was 17 degrees Celsius. But the southwest winds had turned the sea waters a bit blurry. I dove in shallow waters to warm-up my lungs and then I swam for the deep place I had chosen. When I reached at my destination, I could barely see the sea floor from the surface. I dove and swam to cover a lot of distance in order to find the best fishing places that I knew. I dropped the rope of my buoy next to the rock I wanted to dive. But due to the blur and the sight of a big parot-fish, made me to loose the main entrance of the rock by about one meter. So I found myself a little farther from the main entrance. There I saw a big black head of a dusky grouper, who after looking at me, turned and swam under the rock that was at about -25 meters from the surface. I had a shot but the long distance and the size of the fish, made me to hesitate and I did not pressed the trigger. As the dusky grouper turned, I saw a white mark on its body.
"O no! The fish has been shut and I just lost it ... " I thought. Looking better I noticed that the white mark was its side fin and was not due to an old wound. I was relived when I realised that and emerged.  After I had relaxed for some minutes on the surface, I was ready for a second dive. But this time I knew exactly how and where to dive. I ideally approached the entrance of the rock. But the dusky grouper was a bit left than I expected it. So it turned and got into the rock. I followed it calmly, I turned on my flash light and as soon as the fish turned and looked at me, I pressed the trigger of my speargun aiming at the face of the fish. The dusky grouper tried to avoid the spear but it was too late. The spear had struck it in the nose and had come out next to the side fin. I pulled the spear and I felt the fish fighting on the other side of the spear. I was a little delayed by the spear as it had been tangled between two rocks. Pushing it a little forward came out very easily. I embraced the dusky grouper tightly and emerged.
(8th picture: The king was caught....)
Basically my fishing trip was over. I caught a fish of about seven kilos and I did not want anything else. I did some more dives to observe the place. Nothing was swimming. Everything seemed dead. In my opinion, it was the intense thermocline few meters before the sea floor. That's why the dusky grouper I caught was under the rock. I did not see it outside. If I did not know the particular rock, I would not catch the fish. In one of my dives, I saw something moving next to another rock. I dove and when I got next to that rock, I found myself face to face with a two kilo dusky grouper. The fish stood in front of its cave and looked at me. I smiled at the innocence of the small fish, I saluted it and emerged. I picked up my buoy and swam towards the shallows. Looking into different rocks, I managed to catch two middle size sheepsheads. Since I did not want to miss the wonderful day, I went to the car. There, after I changed my gear, I started fishing in shallow waters. There were more fish in the shallows but not great ones. The waters were much warmer here. As I was swimming, my glance caught a motion on the bottom. It seemed to me that a stone was swimming !!!
"This is not possible...." I thought. I changed my direction and swam towards the swimming stone. Looking better I saw it was a nice cuttlefish. It was an easy target. He aimed and caught it. After a while I caught another one. Then I saw a school of parrot-fish. Most of the fish were medium in size, but the leader was a big one. I dove and ambushed on the seabed and caught it. As I taking care of it, under my fins there was another cuttlefish. which I caught it too.
(9th picture: One of the three cuttlefish...)
I had caught three cuttlefish and I was drooling, thinking how tasteful they would be if they were cooked with rise or with spinach. By ambushing on the seabed I caught a total of five parot-fish. Then I started searching the rocks I was interested. I managed to catch four more sheepsheads but I did not get a good sea-bass about two kilos. The fish came from behind me as I was taking care one of the sheepshead. Quickly I armed my speargun and turned slowly towards the sea bass. It turned and headed for a big rock. By the time it got behind it, I swam quickly towards the rock. The fish came out of the side I was expecting but with great speed. The moment it felt me, it disappeared towards the opposite direction. The same happened with a very nice barracuda. Again, having caught a sheepshead, as I emerged behind the rocks, the barracuda pasted in front of me and disappeared into the deep blue.
"Probably it had come to see what was the black thing doing, that made so much noise under the stones ..." I thought. Both of them approached me closely and never saw them again. After making a few ambushes, I decided to go out. As I was swimming to the beach, I saw a crawfish on a rock. I dove and while I mislead it with the speargun, I grabbed it with a quick movement of my right hand. Looking at this very tasty creature, I realised it was too small. I took a breath, dove and left it in a slit in order to have better chances to survive.
(10th picture: Good luck little one...)
"If we meet again in the future, your luck will be different my little one ...." I said smilingly. and got out of the water. I arrived home very tired, rested for a while and took some pictures of the entire catch. Late in the afternoon, farmer John along with his fishing kit, cleansed all the fish. The dusky grouper was 6.9 kilos.... (11th picture: The Karpathian Wellcome!!!!)
The weather had begun to change. The well-known NNW wind made its appearance on the horizon. Slowly it had reached six Beaufort in strength.
"So that was all ..... the calm sea is history..." I thought. The well-known Carpathian weather had made its appearance once again. From now on, fishing would take place in the waves????

....to be continued....

Title: Sea drops and much more.... #1

(1st picture:Even during winter there is Light on Earth.)

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax.

Sea drops, and much more, consists of short stories, which can not be an entire story. So I decided to put several short stories together to complete an entire article.

#1. The end of the summer was approaching. In a few days I would leave my beloved island of Karpathos. The toothache and the high fever was gone and I was calm for few days. But the weather was holding strong. The seven beaufort of NNW winds was present. I was thinking, where should I go fishing? I did not dive for more than 10 days and I did not have the urge to fight the waves. So, I decided to go to a bay where was protected by such weather. It would have some waves, but not much. Besides, I did not want to dive very deep, nor even to fish for many hours. I got dressed and dove in the blue waters of Karpathos. The waters were crystal clear as all over the island. I started to swim looking for big fishes. There were few parrotfish.... The big ones took off when they saw me. Some big sheep-heards also disappeared under the rocks. I knew the place very well. Once they got under the rocks, none could find them. But the place had given me many unexpected surprises in the past. Hoping for such a surprise, I swam further and I saw a beautiful grouper. The fish was about 4 kilos and the sea floor was no more than 6 meters. Without losing it from my eyesight, I dropped as calmly as possible the rope which was attached to my buoy and I approached the fish very slowly. The fish calmly turned and got under a nearby rock. I dove and approached the rock, but the entrance was a bit narrow, but I managed to find it. The fish was lurking in the depth of its hole and just barely I could see it. Targeting the grouper the best way I could, I pulled the trigger. Like an explosion, the grouper's hole became blur at once. The fish tried to get rid of the shaft, shaking violently its body, stirring the sand from the sea floor of its hole. I grabbed and pulled the shaft steadily, which was not heavy, meaning that the fish had escaped. Neither I could not see anything nor do anything. I must wait for the sand to settle in order to be able to see what was going in the grouper's hole.... I decided to fish around for 10 minutes before returning. The only fish I caught was a nice goat-fish. I returned back to the grouper's hole disappointed.
"All I found was a fish and I lost it ..... I was wondering if I could get it again ..." I thought. After I prepared myself again, I dove into its hole without hoping for much. As I was approaching the entrance my underwater camera hit on a rock.
"Oh no.... the grouper is terrified, I'm making too much noise..." I thought and looked inside. As a miracle the fish was there, lurking in the depth of its hole. There was no room to hide !!!! Why the fish did not flee??? I target the fish again and pulled the trigger. (2nd picture:At last...)
The shaft was shaking violently. I grabbed and pulled it firmly. This time the shaft was heavy. As soon as I saw the grouper, I embraced it as were dancing a tight tango, ascended to the surface. Searching its body, I saw that the first shot had stroke it low on the side fin, without causing much damage. My question was: why the grouper did not leave and stayed in a hole that could not hide well? (3rd picture: When the Almighty Wants to Provide...)
If the Almighty Wants to Provide...and my fishing adventure ended. `the grouper was 4.1 kilos.

#2. The winter had begun to show its teeth. But I was looking for its company. Sea-bass, sea-bream, mullets, etc. So I started looking for them. I decided to be a hero by diving in the north Evoikos bay. The waters had cooled enough. 14C on the surface. I drove to the area I had planned and dove. Endless posidoniae with planted pen-shells, sprinkled with the golden gleam of the blur. Τhe underground streams made my fishing adventure more difficult. In certain areas, I was just swimming to pass through due to the thick blur. On those areas everything was yellow and blurry. In the first ambushes, I caught two small sea-bass. I was tricked by the blur and when suddenly I saw the fish next to me, they gave me the impression of being bigger ones. I made the mistake and caught two 700g fish. Then started a long journey without seeing the slightest fish. In certain areas there were some smelts, but the sea-basses were absent. I did not have a choice but to continue my fishing or my swimming I could say to be more accurate of my description. As I was passing by a pen-shell my glance caught something that did blend into the environment. Looking more carefully I saw an octopus, a big octopus !!! (4th picture: The hiding giant) It was hiding behind the pen-shell and it became one with the aquatic environment. If I had pass a meter further, I would certainly not have seen it. I turned my speargun, aimed and caught easily a 5.2 kilos octopus. It tried to escaped, but my shot and with the help of my knife gave it a quick end. (5th picture: I caught it....) I continued fishing without seeing anything special. I went out, put the fishes in the cooler, changed and I started devouring the food that I brought with me. Then I took the road of return, quite tired more from the cold rather than my dives ... I believe ..(6th picture: The octopus and its company....)

#3. The south winds was blowing strong with heavy rain and plenty of waves. When I saw the whole picture I was crazy of joy. The whole situation was smelling the sea-bass.... I ignored the rain and got dressed as fast as I could. I waited for a big wave to pass and I dove. I had not been able to swim a few meters at a quick glance, I saw something that did not blend with the environment. There was something laying on the sand .... I approached it while arming my speargun and I saw in front of me camouflaged on the seafloor an angler-fish. I got even closer but the angler-fish was still motionless.(7th picture: Camouflaged on the sea floor.) Easy target. I aimed it and the shaft stoke the angler-fish on the eye. I pull it closer to me, but with caution. As I approach the angler-fish, it opened its chaotic mouth, showing its sharp teeth. Its teeth are like pointed nails. Angler-fish do not chew their pray, but swallows it whole. The top side of the angler-fish is camouflaged in the color of sand. Its bottom is white. It has a strong tail and two strong side fins that complement this hunter's mobility. To avoid its enemies it has on the back of its head two large spines that are very sharp and covered with its skin. To become even more successful as a hunter, it also has a movement to trick its prey besides its camouflage. So there is a transparent antenna, ending in a small flag....When a prey passes, it shakes its antenna and as the victim approaches close enough to see or eat the "treat", it rushes and swallows it whole. The two kilos angler-fish had swallowed a flounder and a sardine. She had an huge appetite, I could say.... (8th picture: The angler-fish and its bait...)
After five hours of fishing, in the waves with heavy rain, just before I went out, I caught a mullet just over a kilo.... (9th picture: All together....)
Once again, I have seen an angler-fish in eastern part of the Evia island. That fish also I had found in the shallows. It was floating in the surface of the sea and its was as big as a tennis ball !!!! There were some bubbles of air in its gills, and poor little creature could not dive. By the time I approached it, it opened its mouth to enlarge its size and attacked me. It waggled its small tale violently as much as it could, and attacked me !!!! I took it gently in my arms, I waved it right and left to remove the bubbles from its gills go and let it go. It continued to keep its mouth open until it realised that there was not any danger and descend to the deep sea .... (10th picture: All together.)
(11th picture:The incredible mouth!!!) (12th picture: It had a great appetite...)

Translation in English of the above article.

(Picture 1: The good old days.... The two Spyros and I)

Spyros Marinis and Christoforidis and I, started spearfishing as a team. In the beginning our team was  with Christophoridis, but we also needed a third party. So he brought his cousin Marinis. This happened almost thirty years ago !!! Late 80s to early 90s !!! During our first fishing trips, Spirakos was addressing to me formally!! The years passed and Spirakos (the youngest of all) became a better diver than us. He can dive much deeper than his two teachers. Of course we are happy for him .....
The phone rang and it was Spyrakos: "Hi Zach, how are you?"
"I an fine and you?" I answered wondering....
"You will go for spearfishing and you will ended up eating sea-bass ..." he said without allowing me room for any hesitation.
"OK, but under one condition. We will eat them together..." I replied.
"As you wish, but you have to go immediately. Some sea-bass appeared, not in great numbers and the biggest ones are about two kilos. Now that the school is closed due to Christmas vacation, it is worthwhile to go. Of course the place is very big and it will take you a couple of days to swim it in order to find the fish ... "he told me.
"Continue, but then you will come home with Maria to eat them ....." I replied.
He told me about the place, I knew the place. It had many big bays and a lot of swimming was required in order to find the fish... After I finish all my businesses, I loaded my gear just before midday and I left. Although it was winter-time, the day seemed springy. I arrived at the designated place, got dressed and dove. But the blur was present. The last rainfall had made the sea as blur as a soup. At certain parts of the bay, I just swam to pass through because of the thick blur. It had been two hours and I had not seen anything worth while.
"This can not happen. Since Spyrakos told me the place, the fish should be around...." I was thinking while swimming. The next bay had underground waters. In some places the waters were frozen." 10C too cold, and the previous rains had contributed so. Where there were the underground and frozen waters there was nothing swimming, not even the small fishes. In one ambush I saw a shadow in the blurry waters. I pressed the trigger and caught a sea-bass near a kilo. After a while a school of mullets circled me. At first I ignored them, waiting for something bigger to follow them. Nothing appeared. When they came again I aimed and caught a mullet. Suddenly I felt something banging on my back followed by a noise. It was starting raining again. The quiet winter environment had suddenly changed from the hum of the heavy rain. (2nd picture: It raining again...)
"This was the only thing I did not want. The waters are already murky... Now with the rain......" I thought. Shortly before I went out I saw striped sea-breams. In the next ambush I shot the biggest fish that was around 300 grams. The fish sank while the shaft landed a few meters further. Its skull was broken. I caught the striped sea-bream and I thought. "If He Wants to give it to you ..." and I went out. I drove a little further and drove again. Here the sea seemed to be more blurred. A dry river which, because of the rain, had some running water, made it more difficult. Now there was blur on the surface and on the bottom of the sea! The sea floor had changed completely and was covered with mussels. I was expecting to see sea-breams. During my next ambush, few sea-breams appeared, but they were too small and I ignored them. After a while, in another ambush, I saw two sea-basses. The fishes were nervous (due to the cold waters?). When the fishes passed in front of me, I aimed at the largest fish that was 1.3 kilos and pulled the trigger. The sea-bass tried to avoid the shaft, but it was too late for it. Later on another sea-bass, a bit smaller than the previous one, was circling me. When it passed in front of me, I shot it and I caught it too.
"Probably I found the place. The fish are here ..." I thought. After few ambushes that I did not meet anything, I run into a large school of smelts. I dove and waited on the sea floor for any hunter to appeared. The seconds were passing and at some point the school of smelts swam quickly all together for the shallows. I was looking for the hunter. It should have come from behind me. I turned slowly and searched. At the end of my breath I saw an almost round shadow emerging. I followed it and met on the surface. A water-bird with a white head was the hunter. When it saw me, it dove and disappeared into the cloudy waters. I dove for another ambush watching the smelts. As I was looking for any hunters, my gaze felt on the sea floor with the mussels. Between the mussels there were something that looked like "threads" looking upward.
"Like hands stretched to the skies.... They probably are seaweed or are they something else?" I wondered. I caught one with caution and pulled out gently to observed it. A soft starfish appeared in front of my astonished eyes. They had stretched their tentacles to feed on the sea plankton. It was like as if they all together, were gazing ecstatically the Heavens with their "hands" stretched out. I was astonished for a few more seconds, ignoring if a fish had appeared. My need for air took me violently out of the miracle I had just noticed. (3rd picture: Another miracle in our planet)
I went out and drove to the next bay. It was a small bay and it did not take me long time to fish it. There were only small fish. While I was swimming and I needed a few meters to go out, a good sea-bass passed beneath me. The sea-bass swam away from me and before disappearing in the murky waters, turned back to me. I did not wait for a better chance and pulled the trigger of my speargun, hoping for a miracle. I shot it from the surface and caught the biggest sea bass of the day. It was 2,100 gr. (4th picture: The biggest of all...) I embraced it and I went out. I was tired more from the cold temperature of the sea than from swimming. At least I had found the fish of Spirakos. I was very hungry and ate very quickly most the provisions I had with me. Then I fell asleep. I did not even resized when it happened. At midnight a strong storm joined my sleep. It lasted for a few hours. I truly enjoyed it, since I was cozy and warm inside my car, listening to the voice of the rain hitting the car. It was a lovely lullaby..... (5th picture: Day one...)
The alarm clock woke me up early in the morning. I got up bored. I thought to go back and continue my sleep. "I get up lazy bum, get up ..." I heard a voice inside my head. I was planning to fish until noon and then I would returned home. I wore my cold wetsuit as fast as I could. By doing so, I would moderate the cold, since the wetsuit would be warmed by my body. The day was cloudy and a light southwest wind was blowing, which made me happy when I realised it. This weather is the best for sea-bass in this area. In my first dive, which I did to prepare my lungs, a nice sea-bass appeared. The fish swam away and turned unexpectedly. That was its last mistake ever. I caught a 1.2 kg fish in my first dive. After few dives I landed on the sea floor that looked good for an ambush. There were a lot of small fish surrounding me. The fishes seemed to be scared with any slightest movement of me. As I turned to look to my left, I saw a sea-bass, around a kilo, on top of a rock. The fish seemed to be very calm and swam away slowly. It gave me the needed time to turn my speargun and just before it got lost in the blur, I pulled the trigger and caught it. Oh yes, lets continue!!! After a few ambushes, I landed between some rocks. As I was looking left and right, I notice at the end of the rock a shadow was running. Focusing on it, I saw a nice sea-bass that in a few seconds it would be vanished in the blurry waters. Quickly I aimed and pulled the trigger of my speargun. In the murky waters, a silver flashing body that was shaking violently informing me that I had a successful strike. After few seconds I had it in my arms. In my next ambushes, a lot of sea-bass appeared in front of me in small groups. Unfortunately they were under half a kilo and I did not bother them. In all my ambushes they were present. They kept coming to see me, circling around me until I got to the next cape. There I did not see them again. As I dove for another ambush and expect the sea-bass would come from the shallows as usual, I turn my head to the left and see two sea-breams. I was completely uncovered, from the direction that the fish was approaching me. There was nothing I can do. I just froze. I lowered my gaze and waited for the reaction of the fish. The leading fish was close to three kilos and the second, which looked like a sardine beside it, was about a kilo. The biggest sea-bream looked at me with a very serious and nervous gaze. It stared at me and never entered in the reach of my speargun. They swam slowly and got lost in the blur. I immediately stopped my ambush and ascended to the surface, took a quick breath, dove and crawled on the sea floor, pulling my body with my hands in order to make the lest possible moves. But in vain. I did not see them again. I dove 2-3 times and hided in the sea floor towards the direction of the two sea-breams, but nothing appeard. I was very happy that I just saw such beautiful creatures. I went further and continue fishing. Shortly before I finished fishing, while waiting on the bottom, a nice sea-bass came from behind and on my right. The course of the fish was such that it would pass in front of me after few seconds. I gently turned my speargun and when I was ready I shot the fish. The reel of the speargun whistled as the rope was unwinding quickly. Being sure for my shot, I reeled in the fish quickly and embrace a sea-bream of 1.9kg which was the second largest fish I had caught in my two days adventure.
(6th picture: the 2nd biggest sea-bass)I stopped fishing and got out very happy. I took some pictures of the fish and just get dressed, before started raining heavily. In my car I enjoyed the sandwiches I had brought, while listening to the song of the rain hitting my car loudly!! (7th picture: Day two)
(8th picture: With Maria and Spirako)
Few days later, we enjoyed the largest of the sea-basses with Spyrako and Maria....

P.S. I had found the fish in the designated area that Spyrakos had told me. The fish were few and the biggest ones were about two kilos. Probably I would have to wait more days for bigger sea-bass to come closer to the shore.... but that would be another fishing adventure....
