Title:Spearfishing in 100... cm!!!
Video & Photo : Zacharias Skevofilax.
Life in Karpathos Island continued at summer's pace for the local population. For us tourists, things were fine. Vacation!!! But one afternoon, acquaintances and friends gathered at Ms. Sofia's shop to wrap dolmadaki. The traditional dolmadakia of Karpathos are very small and extremely tasty. The order was for a wedding... 3000 pieces!!! So seven women got together to full-fill the order. For about eight hours, they formed, cut, rolled, etc., so finally Vangelis would take to cook them. (1st Picture: Anna is standing, next to her is Ms. Irini, my cousins Haroula & Anna, my mother, Ms. Eugenia and Ms. Sofia!!!). Besides two of the ladies who are working in the shop, the rest came with plenty love to help without payment, because there was a need!!! The Greek philotimo in all its glory!!!
A few days later, on Madonna's Day, my mother cooked us the traditional stuffed goat. It is normally baked in a wood-fired oven with vines. But since we don't have one, she cooked it in the electric oven. The goat meat had melted and was a delight. And the filling and the potatoes... all delicious. (2nd Picture: Mum knows what to do!!!). I almost exploded from too much eating !!! In the afternoon I noticed that the weather was calming down considerably. Maybe the Universe saw and did me a favour, to burn off my excess fat. So I started inspecting and repairing my spearguns. Then I heard my mother asking me: "Where are you planning to go again???" I explained to her that the weather had softened a lot and that it was an opportunity to go to my favourite shallows and continued the repairs. At one point when I looked for one of the spearguns I had fixed... and saw my mother holding it slyly and saying: "Let's go??? Since you're going shallow I will come too !!!" and burst out laughing. I hugged her and replied: " Definitely !!!". (3rd Picture: Ready for the very deep waters!!!).
I woke up early at dawn and rushed to reach the chosen fishing spot. The sea was just perfect!!! I loaded everything in the car and after half an hour of driving, I was where I wanted to be, without my mother of course. I didn't want competition, and let alone the mum-rookie could come up with big surprises, you never know. The sea was just wrinkled, no waves at all!!! I got dressed and dived. There were too many parrotfish, countless I would say. But I was looking for silver !!! the white sea breams (Diplodus sargus). In the very first dive, in the extreme depth of 100... centimetres, in a well-known hole, I saw a very remarkable white sea bream swimming around in the dark. As I aimed it, I saw behind it a three-kilo dusky grouper (Epinephelus guaza). I could see the dusky grouper from a small hole where I could not get it out, so I didn't shoot it. The white sea bream got lucky too !!! I made a big circle swimming and went back to the same hole. I did not find anything, the fish were gone. I made an ambush a little further down and waited. A large school of about 25 parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense) passed in front of me. I waited to find the biggest one and shot it. (4th Picture: The 1st catch of the day...). The first fish of the day was off 700 gr. I put it on the buoy and continued. I was approaching the small cape. There if one crawls a bit far ahead, it surprises the fish that are under the big rock. And so I did it. I dived far ahead, crawled, and as another large rock was hiding my presence, quietly approached. I turned on the underwater flash light, just enough I could see, when I noticed the presence of a big white sea bream and shot it. I rushed and pulled the spear out to avoid any troubles. The spear came out heavy. The white sea bream was 800 gr. !!! (5th Picture: The 1st & big white sea bream of 800 gr. !!!).
"Well done...lets continue..." I said to myself and went even shallower. In a known slit, white sea breams were swimming through the darkness of the slit. I turned on the underwater flash light just enough and pulled the trigger at the appropriate fish. I caught another 560 gr. white sea bream. (6th Picture: 560 gr. and continuing...). After arranging the fish, I got as close as I could to the slit. There is a tunnel, where the fish were hiding when they get scared. They swim in and out and if you are patient enough, you might catch one more. Then the fish disappear for the rest of the day from the tunnel. So I waited. At first the smallest fish appeared. If you don't shoot, then the big guys get curious and appear too. So I waited and behind the little white sea breams, a good one appeared. I aimed as best I could and pulled the trigger. From the jerking of the spear, I realised that the goal was achieved, but I had to get the fish in my hands... I pulled the spear out firmly and hug a 450 gr. fish.(7th Picture: The 3rd one of 450 gr. ...). Relaxing a bit. I took a few breaths and observed the surroundings. As I was looking around, my gaze caught a movement of a good white sea bream among some parrotfish. I approached and dived, crawled towards the hole where I saw the fish. Some parrotfish appeared in front of me and I ignored. After a while the white also appeared. I shot it in the middle and it jumped out of the hole, making my life easier. It was slightly larger than the last 480 gr. (8th Picture: The wicked one of 480 gr. ...). As I surveyed the surroundings, I saw a Triton's trumpet (Charonia tritonis) hidden among the stones. I caught it, but found out it was alive. After examining it, put it back and swam further down. (9th Picture: The lucky one ...). I did one more ambush before returning. I hid well and waited. Parrotfish appeared, but I didn't pay much attention to them. More and more parrotfish were coming... They were about 50 fish!!! There was nothing better so I was looking for the leader, the biggest fish. I shot a big one and caught an 800 gr. fish. On the way back, I stopped at the small cape again. With the well-known technique I approached and looked in the big crack. Most of the fish were small, but the beam of my flashlight spooked a good parrotfish, which came out of the cover of darkness and I caught an 800 gr. fish. A little further down, I catch another parrotfish, a red one this time of 700 gr. (10th Picture: The red parrotfish...). Continuing on, I saw a small white sea bream swimming in a hurry out of a small cave, quite far from me.
"What scared it???" I wondered. I approached from the side so not to be seen through the opening and when I was ready, I appeared in front of the hole. I didn't know what to expect and so my senses were at their maximum. I didn't turned on the flashlight, but I noticed the teeth of a good white sea bream. The fish was vertical and I did not to take any more chances, so I pulled the trigger. The spear didn't jerk at all, but before I thought that I must had missed, something flashed in the darkness. I pulled the spear and I have hit the big white sea bream between the eyes. It was the largest of the day 850 gr. (11th Picture: The bully of 850 gr. ...). As I was swimming to get out, I saw mullets (Mugil cephalus) swimming next to the bottom rocks. I approached and dived a little further away from them while taking cover from a rock. I crawled and got closer, but the fish sensed me and hid under the various rocks. I stayed on the seafloor and waited. Two mullets stayed under a certain rock. At the first opportunity, I aimed and shot one of them. The mullet that was hit put its head between two stones, while its entire body was visible. It was 1.100 gr. As I was swimming towards the exit, my eyes caught a movement. A fleeting movement under a rock without much interest. I approached, looked inquisitively, and found that a large white sea bream has burrowed into a hole that seemed it didn't fit in. Surprisingly enough, I caught a 650gr. fish. If someone told, that a large white sea bream was hiding in that slit, I don't think I'd have believed him. Moving on, I decided to look for a good crack. I ambushed and waited. Various fish were swimming around, but I was waiting patiently. After a while, a good white sea bream appeared in the crevice. I stayed motionless. The white sea bream continued, hiding behind the stones of the crevice. I stayed motionless. Full of curiosity, the fish comes out to see me and there I caught him. It was 450 gr. As I was swimming, I saw a large white sea bream swimming nervously. Immediately I dived knowing that the possibilities finding the fish were slim. Ι was hidden behind a rock. I crawled forward to get a better cover and waited. After several seconds the large white sea bream turned to see what was going on, keeping a safe distance, or so it thought and I pulled the trigger. The spear jerked violently. I pulled it gently and saw that I have caught the biggest white sea bream of the day. 950 gr. and I hadn't activated the underwater camera. (12th Picture: The biggest 950 gr. !!!). As I was putting the fish on the buoy and I saw several mullets hiding under the rocks again. Quick dive and instant shot. (13th Picture: One of the two mullets...). The fish jumped out of the rock, I grabbed it and went out. (14th Picture: Time to went out...).
The last fishing in my beloved Karpathos was also the best!!!
(15th Picture: The end of Karpathos 2023...).
With God's Will, I will be fishing again in my favourite waters.
