Title: Summer time sea bass and more....

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

(1st picture: Poseidon's water-balloons ???)

Although in June, the sea was still cold. So one day that I had no professional obligations, I decided to go for sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). In short: shallow ambushes in murky waters. At dawn I found myself in a lovely sea bass fishing place. A gentle south wind was blowing that was getting stronger as time went on that made me even happier. As soon as I dove, underneath me, a mullet (Mugil cephalus) about one kilo was grazing. As soon as it realised my presence it started swimming.
"Either now or never ..." I said to myself, aimed and pulled the trigger. I shot the moving mullet from the surface !!! I happily arranged it on my buoy and continued. By the time I arranged the mullet, in front of me there was an sharpsnout sea-bream (Diplodus putanzzo) swimming on the bottom. Once again, as it realised my presence it started swimming doing zigzags, showing that it was nervous but not scared. I did not dive, because the fish would swam away. I stayed on the surface waiting for the right moment. As soon as it turned and I had a bigger target, I pulled the trigger and caught my second fish, from the surface !!! Without even diving I had already caught two fish !!!
"Very well done Zac ...Maybe today the waters are not blurry ??"  I said to myself with all joy. But the fishing from the surface was over. So I started my ambushes. After a while in an ambush she took me in her arms. She was my favourite friend madam blur, who was so eagerly waited for me to meet her!!! Lost in my thoughts and in my loneliness, I noticed a familiar silhouette. It was a beautiful sharpsnout sea-bream, but it did not approach me. I aimed as best as I could and pulled the trigger to this ghost of blur. The spear found its target in the center and so I caught my third fish. As I reached the seaweeds that I was looking for, a huge herd of small sardines appeared in front of me.
(2nd picture: The largest sharpsnout sea-bream....)
"Here we are ..... and now it's seabass time... " I thought. I dove and waited. After a while seabasses appeared. But they were all small. Probably smaller than I wanted and I did not bother them. Diving again and ambushing where the small sardine was. Indeed the fish came again. In the background appeared two nice sharpsnout sea-bream, but I was looking for something bigger. A really good seabass came to inspect me. It stood in front of me providing me with a big enough target and so I caught a 1.3 kg fish. I caught what I was looking for.
(3rd picture: The fist one of the day...)
"Probably there are more ..." I thought. Ambush after ambush I did not see anything big and I had reached the end of the first seaweeds. Knowing the place well, I continued swimming. Here the muddy seabed had a steep slope and sometimes holds fish by the edge of the slope. So I dove and waited. After several seconds a herd of striped sea-bream (Lithognathus mormyrus) appeared. The fish, however, did not come swimming near the bottom, but they inspected me from midwater. Some fish were big enough and caught my attention. I aimed at one of the biggest and so I caught the first striped sea-bream of the day.
(4th picture: The first striped sea-bream of the day...) Ambush after ambush I managed to catch two more striped sea-breams and decided to go out. As I swam towards the shore, I saw that the seabed was covered with small balloons, - I should say water-balloons.  A type of jellyfish, in the shape of a small balloon, lying on the bottom. They were numerous and in groups.
"Poseidon's grandchildren are probably ready for a water-balloon fight ..." I thought with a smile. It was the first time I had noticed such a phenomenon. I took the video I wanted and got out. I went to my car and drove several kilometres and dove again. Here, too, the seabed was muddy. I dove looking for one of the places that holds fish. I crawled to the bottom looking for my marks. I found the place I was looking for and waited. After a few seconds, a sea bass swam in front of me through the thick blur. It was big enough and I tried to follow its path with my speargun. As soon as it stopped, for tenths of a second, I shot at a very close range. The fish was lost in the dense blur. Confident of my shot, I quickly reeled in the speargun's rope and along with the rod, a two kilo sea bass (1.8 kg) appeared. (5th picture: The biggest sea bass!!!). I happily took the wonderful fish in my arms and kissed it several times. I made several ambushes and finally a large school of mullets swam towards me. The fish were swimming on the surface and as soon as they felt my presence, they dove to see what was lying on the bottom. Some of the fish were quite large. I controlled myself not to shoot any mullet no mater how big they were, because this time I was looking for something bigger.
"Maybe a bluefish (Temnodom saltator) will follow them ???" I wondered and kept waiting. Indeed, at the end of the herd there was a predator. But it was not a bluefish but a seabass. I did not mind at all and when it approached me I shot it. The seabass disappeared into the murky waters, but as it was fighting to free itself, his silver body shone, illuminating the hazy and murky landscape. I quickly picked up my 1.4 kg precious trophy. (6th picture: One more...) But I was starting to get tired. I was fishing for almost five hours. My hunger and tiredness were demanding to be fulfilled. So I decided to go out. In an ambush and while I was looking for some fish in the blur, on my way out, I realised  the presence of a fairly large fish right on the edge of the blur. The fish swam towards me, covered by the bitter veil of blur, but it was unlucky  because I saw it. I remained in my position as motionless as I could.I do not even look at it. The suspicious fish was slowly approaching me. When I was sure I pressed the trigger. The spear hits the wonderful hunter above his eye and the 1.3 kg seabass just sank into the blur.
(7th picture: The unlucky sea bass...) I decide to go out, but as I was swimming towards the beach I was surrounded by mullets.
"One more .... " I said to myself. I landed on the bottom and waited. After several seconds the mullets appeared. At first they stayed far away, but as the seconds passed the herd approached me making circles around me. I was looking for a predator. After a while, a sea bass appeared swimming among the mullets. The course of the fish showed me that it would not approach me, so I aimed as best as I could and pressed the trigger. The spear left at incredible speed and stroke the sea bass on its back and got out behind its eye. Before I realised what had happened  the seabass was sinking. I could not believe in my eyes what I had accomplished. (8th picture: The last one for today...) I continued swimming towards the beach, when I saw a stingray (Myliobatoidei) hidden among the seaweeds. Very easy target, but I was very pleased with so many fish I had caught. I could easily shot it from the surface. I dove in front of it to get the video I wanted. The big stingray jumped out its hide-out and disappeared into the blur ...
"The Almighty provided us a lot of fish today, Zac..." I said to myself and I prepared to get out. But He had other plans too!!! Among the first seaweeds of the beach and at a depth of about half a meter there was a nice common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis). I caught it and the moment I put it on my fish-hunger, I saw another one. I caught it too and went out without looking for anything else ....
"Enough ....." I said to myself. I looked around to see if anyone was on the beach. Fortunately I was alone. I took the photos I wanted, cleaned the fish. At that moment my friend Petros came. I showed him the fish and we talked about them. When I told him about the big sting ray and how deep I found it, he shouted at me that I let such a delicacy to go away. I promise him that the next one we would share the next sting ray I would see. We schedule the next fishing trip, we said goodbye and I took the road back home, chewing on the wonderful appetisers of Stavroula. They were so delicious ...(9th picture: All together....)

Title: First day of Freedom!!!

Title: First day of Freedom!!!

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

(1st pictured: Beauty in the Light!!!)

The deep and steep cape looked at me and said: "Are you going to dive here or you will dive to the shallow bay with the blurry waters???"
I looked at it and replied: "I will come towards you....but I need to change my diving gear first...."
I took the longest speargun, the big buoy, put a second speargun on it and swam towards the cape. When I arrived I realised that the stream was very strong. It was like swimming in a mild river. After 17-20 meters deep, there was a strong and icy thermocline with a lot of blur. I dove several times without seeing anything. The stream was sweeping me away, but I didn't see any good fish. In a dive some small two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris) appeared and they were very reluctant to approach me ....
"Let's get out of here ... we're in danger of drowning "... I said to myself and swam for the shallows.
"We're not done yet ..." I heard the deep cape telling me.
I ignored it and continuing swimming with a very bored pace I could say. At one point many black damselfish (Chromis chromis) had gathered around and they were nervous too. I decided to dive and ambush. I dove and ambushed at the incredible depth of-5.4 meters. I was so bored that I did not activate the underwater camera. As soon as I landed behind a rock, two leerfish (Lichia amia)  appeared in front of me. The leading fish was the largest one. By the time I pulled myself together, the leading fish was almost out of range. I aimed as fast as I could and pulled the trigger. The spear stroke the leerfish on the top of its back and a crazy dance began. The fish tried to get rid of the spear while I was trying to keep the fishing rope stretched whenever needed. Knowing that my shot was not good (albeit marginal), whenever the fish was running, I loosen my grip. After a while I gently pulled the tired leerfish towards me. Then it makes a sharp turn, wrapping its body with the fishing line, using as leverage the spear. I realised that with one or two more turns it would tear its back and the fish could free itself. I dove immediately and tried to catch it by the tail. The leerfish was strongly fighting to free itself. I was amazed how quickly it changed directions, albeit wounded — tired, trying to avoid me. Finally, I catch it by the tail. Although it was a fish only 3.5 kg, it shook me unbelievably. Eventually I managed to catch it by the gills and with the use of my diving knife I gave it a quick end. (2nd picture: the leerfish...) Unfortunately, I don't video the shot because I didn't believe what I heard.... At that moment, I heard the thunderous laughter of the cape telling me: "Hahaha, we did not finish yet....
"This phrase made me think:"What did the cape want to tell me???" I wondered. I did some deep ambushes but saw nothing. I changed my strategy and got the short speargun. I searched any rocks I liked without much success. But in one of them, there were black damselfish gathered at the entrance of a flat rock.
"There's something here ..." I thought. I dove, approached the entrance carefully and saw a big common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) resting. I aimed and pulled the trigger. It resisted for a while, but due to the very good shot, I pulled it out of the flat rock relatively quickly. It was a 2.5 kg octopus. (3rd picture: A nice octopus...) As I hang the octopus on my buoy, a deadly embracement started. The octopus was dead, but with its complex nervous system in action, grabbed the leerfish with its tentacles!!! At that time an idea came to me, to fish shallower than the thermocline. I changed my strategy once more. I went out, arranged my trophies in the fridge. I got my 82 cm speargun, which I use for shallow ambushes. On a dive and while crawling at the bottom, as I was emerging behind a rock, I came across a herd of mullets (Mugil cephalus). The fish were quite big. I waited for something better to appear. The fish realised my presence and slowly started to swim away. I aimed and shot one of the last ones and caught a fish over a kilo. (1,2).                 (4th picture: Just before the shot...). Later on I caught two sharp-snout sea-bream (Diplodus putanzzo)  too.                 (5th picture: The first one was the biggest....) I started fishing a little deeper. The main reason was in some of my last ambushes, I had heard the song of the corvina (Sciaena umbra). So I was looking to find them... After a while, in a dive at the limit of the thermocline, I found them. A flock of about a dozen fish, floating just above the bottom, hiding in the blurry cold water. I crawled as gently as I could to get close to them. Some of the fish came to see what was approaching. One of the biggest fish looked at me, turned, showing me all its wonderful colours  I didn't expect a better chance and I pulled the trigger aiming at the big corvina. The fish disappeared in the murky waters and as Ι reeled in the fishing line, the fish appeared on the spear. I caught a 1.5 kg fish.(6th picture: The big corvina!!!). The rest disappeared and I never saw them again, no matter how hard I tried. Dive after dive I did not see any good fish. Changing strategy again. I goodbye thanking the cape and swam towards the blurry and sandy bay.
"We'll meet again.... soon !!!" I heard the cape telling me. I thanked it once more and left. I put the known variation on my head, the extra weight on my back and started the shallow ambushes in the blurry waters. I caught two striped sea-bream (Lithognathus mormyrus) and another mullet quickly.
"Enough with the mullets ..., let's look for sea bass ..." I said to myself. On the muddy beach I saw something strange at the seafloor. (7th picture: Can you see it???) Something was hidden under the sand. Its shape had betrayed it. I aimed and pulled the trigger. A big blue crab  (Callinectes sapidus) appeared on my spear. (8th picture: Now you can see it!!!). I put it on my fish hanger, but something next to him attracted my curiosity. It was a white tube-dwelling anemone (Ceriantharia.) on the seabed. This wonderful being had opened its tentacles and was waiting for the menu to pass by. I spent several seconds admiring its beauty and then continued my dives. A little further down a small gilt-head (sea) bream (Sparus aurata) was lying on the seafloor. I approach it and found that the small fish was caught in a fishing line that was tangled on a tree branch. Unable to free itself, the small gilt-head (sea) bream died. But its death was not in vain. The side of the fish that was resting on the seabed had been eaten by the speculators of the seabed !!!. I was starting to get tired. I decided to go to a fishing ground I knew and finish there my fishing expedition. After all, the All-mighty had given me much more than I expected. I dove in the blur. Here the under water stream had clouded the seabed and the surface, leaving clear the intermediate part of the sea. I dove and ambushed, carefully landing as gentle as I could on the muddy bottom. After a while, sea basses (Dicentrarchus labrax) surrounded me. They came and went in groups. All were small and some medium size fish. I was looking for the bigger ones. I was impressed by the little sea basses, that came to see the tip of the spear. It was probably shone in the blur and they might thought that it was a fish, and came for an easy meal. Since there was nothing big to catch, I swam to get out. But something was telling me to dive one last time at the edge of the seaweeds. So I ambushed among the seaweed and waited. After a while, a well-known silhouette appeared faintly on the horizon. The fish swam away but turned around and approached me... Without a second thought I pulled the trigger. The sea bass just fell into the seaweed. Its white belly could be easily seen in the blurry waters. (9th picture: The last one for today...). Full of joy, I embraced the 1.4 kg sea bass and went out. I took the necessary photos, without anyone seeing me, cleaned the fish and with the feeling of Freedom spreading everywhere, I drove back home.... (10th picture: All together....)

Title: Just before the Coronavirus traffic ban...

Title: Just before the Coronavirus traffic ban...

Photo-video: Zacharias Skevofilax

The whole situation was telling me that traffic ban was on the horizon and that would probably last for a long time. Fear-mongering as much as possible by the TV channels about the corona virus. So I decided to go fishing, at the last minute just before the up-coming traffic ban, to my beloved N. Evoikos Bay. At the toll booths there was little traffic. Not because of traffic congestion, but because there was no human personnel to serve the passing cars. If someone wanted to pass through, he/she had to pay on the machines using cash or credit-card, unless you had the pass, that allowed the driver to pass comfortably. Of course, there were a couple toll officials who approached the drivers in case there was a problem. Later at the same night as I returned, almost all the TV channels showed traffic congestion at the toll booths. Not even a single TV channel used wide camera lens to show the whole picture. They had focused on the toll booths and showed that they were many cars and so they were passing very slow. No reporter said anything about the complete staff shortages. Fear-mongering and exaggeration together at its best!!!
But let's go back to our story. So I left at dawn and arrived after two hours of driving where I wanted. Got dressed immediately and I dove. I started my ambushes on a rocky seabed. The intense waves forced me to hold on to the various stones as much as I could, in order to maintain my underwater position. There were small fish in almost every dive. Some good size white sea breams (Diplodus sargus) appeared, but when they realised my presence, they disappeared into the blue. Ambush after ambush, I continued fishing alone. It is good to spearfish in pairs, but sea bass fishing is unfortunately a lonely sport. So in my icy loneliness the seconds were passing slowly, very slowly without seeing anything big. Hiding between the stones of the seabed, I waited for the surprise, which did not appear on the horizon. In an ambush, while I was lying among the brown-yellow seaweeds, I enjoyed the wonderful landscaped. A beautiful sea garden stretched out in front of me. While ecstatic gazing at this beauty, something was approaching me from my right. It was a large flock of  salema porgy (Sarpa salpa). They approached me reluctantly, they scattered at some point and after a while the whole herd returned and passed in front of me. With their golden stripes, they made the landscape look even more idyllic. Among them, there were quite large in size fish .....
"We are not here for salema porgy..... Zac .... Maybe something bigger will follow them ..." I said to myself and I didn't pull the trigger. But in vain. I continued my ambushes and in one of them small two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris) approached. As I was hiding among the seaweed, I noticed that something bigger was among them. It was a sharpsnout sea-bream (Diplodus putanzzo) that followed the herd of two-banded sea bream. I continued waiting and finally caught the first fish of the day.
(1st Picture: The 1st of the day...)
"Well done and the sharpsnout sea-bream is large enough....." I thought. I proceeded again without seeing anything special. At the end of this fishing ground, the bottom rocks were much smaller and fewer. I thought of making some ambushes before going out. So I approached the seafloor and waited. The seconds passed slowly and I was embraced by the icy sea loneliness. I was impressed by the various small fish. They were nervous and stayed very close to the rocks of the seabed. I thought I was the reason. This usually happened for the first few seconds. But the small fish on this ambush did not come off the rocks and that put me in thoughts.
"Maybe.....????" I wondered...Then I felt something was approaching me. I turned to my right and saw a nice sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). As I slowly turned towards the fish, it changed direction to leave. Having no other choice, I aimed as best as I could and pulled the trigger. The spear covered the distance in tenths of a second and all I saw was something shined in the blurry waters.
"Did I succeed ??? Or the fish managed to avoid the spear ??? ...." I wondered. There was not the slightest resistance on my spearfishing line and I slowly swam towards my spear sure of my failure. As I approached it, I saw the beautiful sea bass lying on the seabed among the stones. I was soooo happy. The spear stroke the wonderful sea bass on the side fin and got stuck-on its head, killing it instantly. Finally a nice sea bass and how I managed to catch it....and what a long shot .... I kissed it many times and put it on my buoy ready to leave. (2nd Picture:At last!!!) Besides, I had reached the end of the fishing spot and I wanted to go somewhere else. As I was swimming to get out, I saw a fish on the sea floor. I dove and it was a  gilt-head (sea) bream (Sparus aurata) about 700 gr, with a broken tail. (3rd Picture: ???). With a broken tail it was unable to swim and died. I felt sorry for the beautiful fish. It was dead for several days ... I went out and drove a little further down and dove again. Here the seabed was completely muddy. Of course, the water was even more cloudy. I swam to get where I wanted, when something caught my attention. I dove and saw a grey triggerfish (Balistes capriscus) about a kilo, sitting between some branches playing dead. Its skin had the colours of the environment so as not to be seen by predators and sat still. I videoed and left it alone.
(4th Picture: The cunning one...)I went ahead and got where I wanted. I dove and waited. I touched as gently as I could on the bottom, but I stirred some blur from the muddy seabed. In the background was a large herd of two-banded sea bream was approaching. But a good size gilt-head (sea) bream was ahead and as soon as it turned, I shot it and caught it. It was a fish about 800 grams..
(5th Picture: Just before the shot...)
"Well done again ..." I said to myself and continued. But apart from the small two-banded sea bream, I didn't see anything else and decided to go out. Searching for some common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis),  I caught two and went out. I drove several kilometres and dove again. Here the seabed was paved with many flat rocks. I made a lot of ambushes and in one of them, I saw nice striped sea-bream (Lithognathus mormyrus) far away. Turning the speargun to my left, I startled the already frightened fish that disappeared into the blue. But the whole movement aroused the curiosity of a sea bass. The small fish came to see me, turned around gracefully and left. A middle size striped sea-bream  was following the sea bass. Before it disappeared into the blue, I pulled the trigger. Although a long shot, I saw the silver fish sinking. I pulled the fish towards me. The spear had hit it in the back and had come out of its eye, killing it instantly. I kept fishing but I didn't see anything I wanted to catch and I went out.
(6th Picture: The last one of the day...) I changed, took some photos all the fishes together and drove back. (7th Picture: Done for today...) At the toll booths, the situation was the same as in the morning, without staff to serve those who traveled and the TV channels..... Later at night, the traffic ban was announced.....
PS. You may realise, that this article was written while in quarantine, for about a month and a half. One and a half months incarcerated due to a virus of dubious origin. We have as much time as we want, but with restrictions. A lot of anger and anxiety, among other things, about the whole situation and the lack of freedom. We can't go out as much as we want, we can't go to work or wherever we want and strangely enough we can go for a swim even alone. Like the Free Besieged of the old times.....The point is to feel free in difficult situations. When everything is easy, it is so simple. Living every moment, every minute, every second.... It's difficult you may say. I will answer: extremely difficult. But then and only then are we truly Free. Then and only then, nothing can limit or affect us. Everything seems so deceptive that it is not worth worry about such issues. Because they just don't touch you anymore. So it's worth the effort, it is a long term process, but the results can't be described. Words are very poor when someone's effort is blessed to experience something as divine as True Freedom ....
You may ask, why I am telling you this now ..... the ban is gone..... I hope I will be wrong, but sooner or later winter is coming. Keep that in mind .....
I am finishing my article with the words of a world-wide known and one of my favourite writers .....

I hope for nothing,
I fear nothing,
I am Free.
