Video & photos : Zacharias Skevofilax.
I arrived early in the morning in my beloved Karpathos Island for Easter holidays. The sea was calm!!! Such an opportunity was very rare on the island and so the plans for an afternoon swim began. I arrived at home, where the necessary hugs and kisses with the surprised parents took place. After the various things were taking care, I started getting ready for the afternoon expedition. But I was tired, due to the trip, so I decided to spearfish only in the shallows. After half an hour of driving, I arrived where I wanted to be and anxiously dived in. The sea was a little murky, but I didn't care. I started fishing, looking for white sea breams (Diplodus sargus). Parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense) had started to arrive in great numbers, but I decided not to bother them. The light waves made it difficult for me in the very shallows. So the first good in size white sea bream was quite difficult for me to catch, as I was being shaken by the small waves. The white sea bream was hiding behind the salema porgy (Sarpa salpa). which were running left and right like crazy. Finally I managed to catch the first fish of the day. It was a 480 gr fish. (1st Picture: The first fish in Karpathos for this year...). A little further down, at the same incredible depth of 20 cm, I ambushed on a rock and waited. A large school of parrotfish was approaching me, but a nice white sea bream was following behind. The white sea bream was nervous and did not know what to do. At the right moment, I pulled the trigger, but it managed to turn. Thus the spear stroke and skewered it and the fish falls to the sea floor. That was how I caught the 2nd white sea bream, which was about 500 grams. (2nd Picture: The 2nd and a little bigger 520 gr...). A little further down, in a well-known hole, many fish were inside. I approached it slowly and carefully. Looking inside and I saw several salema porgy and white sea breams. There was a big fish among them and that was my target. I waited for the right moment and I achieved what I wanted. That was how I caught my 3rd white sea bream which was 900 grams!!! (3rd Picture: The biggest one, 900 gr!!!). I happily arranged it on my fishing hook, when I realised, next to me, there was a nice common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis). I armed the speargun as fast as I could, activated my underwater camera, and pulled the trigger. I caught the cuttlefish, but the shot was not recorded in the video. (4th Picture: Curiosity kills...).
"So far, so good..." I thought happily. What struck me was that there was a rather new species of crab. Sally Lightfoot or else spider crab, (percnon gibbesi) are flat crabs with long legs, nibbling on the algae that grew on the rocks (5th Picture: A new species of crabs!!!). I'd seen them in recent years, but they had been spreading at an incredible rate. I find them in the shallows everywhere. As I was swimming on the same depth, I noticed that among the Streamlined spinefoot (Siganus argenteus) there were two nice stripped sea bream (Lithognathus mormyrus). One was a little bigger. I hid behind a rock and scratched it a little. The bigger stripped sea bream turned and swam towards me. I aimed and pulled the trigger, catching a 400 grams fish (6th Picture: Wellcome beautiful...). While I was taking care of the fish, my eyes caught the movement of a good white sea bream, hiding between two rocks. I got ready, as fast as I could, and ambushed at the entrance of the crevice. After a few seconds, the fish stack its head out to see what's going on. I didn't want anything better and I pulled the trigger. The 600 grams white sea bream was caught (7th Picture: Toothless white sea bream..). Looking closer, I noticed that the white sea bream was missing at least its two front teeth!!! I happily arranged it with the rest of the fish. But for a while, a large parrotfish had been following me.
"It has suicidal tendencies....It is time to catch the first parrotfish of the day..." I thought. As I ambushed, the parrotfish appeared in front of me. Before it got lost behind the next rock, I pulled the trigger and the spear found it in the neck. It was about one kilo. (8th Picture: One is enough for today...). I decided to head back to the buoy to put the fish on it. While swimming, I saw a spot I liked and decided to dive for an ambush. Parrotfish appeared, followed by Streamlined spinefoot I let the fish to pass and waited. From the opposite side, two nice grey mullets (Mugil cephalus) appeared. The bigger one was closer to me. I aimed and before it swam away I shot it. But the spear found it low in its belly. I opened the reel so as the fish tried to get free, not to tear itself. After a while I had a 1.700 grams mullet in my hands (9th Picture: A big grey mullet...). Continuing, I did the last ambush before the buoy. I landed on the seabed and I waited. There were several parrotfish around me. In fact, a fairly large one passed in front of the spear.
"It almost scratched itself on the spear..." I thought, smiling. Waiting on the same post, I turned my head and saw next to me the large eye of a big barracuda.(Sphyraena sphyraena). The fish passed by me, providing a nice target. Confident by the size of the target, without aiming properly, I pulled the trigger and of course I missed a fish weighing close to 4 kilos!!! (10th Picture: I managed to miss!!!). Ultimately, there were two fish, but the one in front was the largest. I got mad at myself, not so much for the miss, but for my frivolity and confidence. I put the fish I had caught on the buoy and decided to go out. Hading vividly in my mind the previous miss, I sαw a large trumpetfish (Fistularia commersonii) in front of me and a bit far away. I aimed as best as I could and pulled the trigger. The spear flew away at high speed and hit the target in the head, three meters away!!! The trumpetfish was about 1/4 the size of the barracuda I missed!!! (11th Picture: Even though it was a much smaller target, I did not miss...).
"Everything could be caught and everything could be lost..." I said to myself while I was arranging the fish. At that moment, about three meters away under a rock, there was a black fish watching me. It was not a dusky grouper (Epinephelus guaza) It was a fish broader than a grouper. To arrange the trumpetfish, fix the speargun ropes, it took me about 5 minutes. The fish was still looking at me. I armed the speargun and dove calmly towards the fish. When I thought it was the right moment, I pulled the trigger. The mottled grouper (Mycteroperca ruby) managed to turn, but the spear hit it in the center. The fish turned towards the rock and simply sank. (12th Picture: Now this is a great surprise!!!). I hugged the two-kilos mottled grouper (2.3 kilos), kissed it repeatedly and apologies. I did a few more ambushes as I swam to get out. In a well-known cave, I saw a strange all-white sponge, which wasn't there last summer!!! (13th Picture: This sponge wasn't there last summer!!!). In one of them, a good parrotfish was circling me.
"It is your lucky day.... But next time, I don't know..." I thought and continued my ambush. Looking around, I noticed a black head looking at me, under a rock behind me. Without thinking too much, I turned almost 180 degrees, aimed and pulled the trigger. The spear hit the dusky grouper close to the eye. A small battle began, to get the grouper out of the rock. The result of the shot didn't give it much chance to do anything. After a few seconds, I pulled it out, from the abysmal depth of one and a half meters!!! It was a two-kilogram dusky grouper (2.2 kilos). Hugs, kisses and all that. What else should I fish for? Even thought I had plenty of time to continue... (14th Picture: I am speechless...).
"Yes, but that's called greed, Zac..." I said to myself and thanking the Heavens for Their wonderful gifts, I went out. The first Carpathian fishing trip was crowned with complete success...in my opinion.. (15th Picture: The first dive in Karpathos, in my opinion, went extremely well!!!).
